The most common iPhone hotspot mistake is expecting it to repeat Wi-Fi: Personal Hotspot shares your iPhone’s cellular data connection, not a Wi-Fi network the iPhone has joined. The right fix depends on what you’re connecting—a nearby Apple device, a Windows PC or another device—and whether the problem is discovery, the password, the connection or carrier availability.
What iPhone Personal Hotspot actually shares
Personal Hotspot lets other devices access the internet through your iPhone’s cellular connection. It does not pass along hotel, home or public Wi-Fi that the iPhone is using. Apple’s iPhone User Guide states that you can only share the iPhone’s cellular internet connection, not connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and share that network with another device.
That distinction matters if you’re trying to get a laptop online where cellular service is unavailable: switching on Personal Hotspot won’t turn the iPhone into a Wi-Fi repeater. The phone needs a usable cellular connection, and hotspot availability also depends on your carrier and plan.
First, identify the kind of connection problem

- Personal Hotspot is missing: check cellular data and your carrier plan.
- Another device cannot find the iPhone: check the sharing setting, proximity and whether the device is eligible for Instant Hotspot.
- The network appears but the password fails: confirm the hotspot name and password shown on the iPhone.
- The device connects but has no internet: check that the iPhone has cellular service and that the plan permits hotspot use.
- A computer connection is unreliable: try a different supported route—Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB.
Connect another Apple device with Instant Hotspot
For an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account, Apple’s Instant Hotspot feature can make connecting easier by avoiding manual Wi-Fi password entry. Family Sharing members may also connect this way when Family Sharing is configured. Apple describes the feature in its Instant Hotspot guide.
- On both devices, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Keep the devices near each other. Apple’s guidance specifies up to 30 feet (10 meters); actual wireless conditions can affect the connection.
- On the device that needs internet, open its Wi-Fi settings and choose the iPhone hotspot, or follow the Auto-Join prompt if one appears.
Auto-Join can connect or ask to connect when the Apple device is nearby and ordinary Wi-Fi is unavailable. A VPN configuration that blocks local networking can interfere with some Continuity features, so consider that if eligible Apple devices still do not see one another.
Connect a Windows PC or other device over Wi-Fi
Devices outside the same-Apple-Account or configured Family Sharing convenience flow need the regular Wi-Fi joining process. Apple’s Personal Hotspot troubleshooting guide recommends keeping the Personal Hotspot screen open while the other device connects.

- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot. If that option is not shown, check Settings > Cellular and the carrier guidance below.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- On the connecting device, open Wi-Fi settings and select the network whose name matches the iPhone’s device name.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password displayed in Settings > Personal Hotspot. Keep that screen open until the other device connects.
If the hotspot is not listed, turn Wi-Fi off and back on on the device that’s joining, then check that both devices are close enough and try again. If the password is rejected, re-enter the one currently shown on the iPhone rather than relying on a saved or remembered password.

Choose Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB for a computer
There is no single best connection method for every computer. Wi-Fi is convenient when the computer can join the iPhone’s network; USB avoids joining over Wi-Fi but requires a suitable cable and computer setup. Bluetooth is another documented option for Mac and Windows.

Apple’s connection instructions cover the supported methods. Check the ports on both devices before choosing a cable: the connector depends on the iPhone and computer models. USB is not required for hotspot use and, by itself, is not a promise of faster internet.

Should you turn on Maximize Compatibility?
Try Maximize Compatibility when a device has trouble finding or joining the hotspot, especially if it is an older or less compatible client. It is a compatibility troubleshooting step, not a speed setting. Apple warns that internet performance and Wi-Fi security might be reduced for devices connected while it is enabled.
Apple’s Wi-Fi security documentation explains the tradeoff: enabling Maximize Compatibility restricts the hotspot to 2.4GHz, disables 5GHz and applicable 6GHz operation, and enforces WPA2 Personal. If the connection works without it, leave it off rather than treating it as a general optimization.
If Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable
First confirm cellular data is on. If the Personal Hotspot option still does not appear, Apple advises contacting your carrier to check whether your plan supports adding it. Not all carriers offer the feature, and additional fees may apply. On a dual-SIM iPhone, the hotspot uses the selected cellular-data line.

Carrier rules also determine possible charges and how many devices may connect; those details are not universal. Check your own provider and plan for hotspot entitlement, limits and any data-use policy before relying on the connection.
Keep an eye on cellular data
Hotspot traffic uses the iPhone’s cellular data. To review usage, open Settings > Cellular. Apple says connected devices disconnect automatically when the hotspot is not in use to help save battery; it does not provide a universal battery-drain rate or data-use estimate, since both depend on how the connection is used.
