Use three separate operations for three different goals: back up to preserve personal data, erase to return a working device to its setup screen, and restore to put personal data back from a selected backup. On a functioning iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, the simplest route is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings after you verify an iCloud or computer backup. If the device needs its operating system reinstalled, use Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows for a computer factory restore, then restore your content during setup. The correct sequence is backup, erase or reinstall, and restore—not one combined command.
What is the difference between backing up, erasing, and restoring?
A backup is a saved copy of eligible data, an erase removes information and settings from the device, and a restore puts data from a chosen backup onto a new or erased device. Confusing these actions is the most common cause of lost data or an unexpected setup process.
- Backup: Creates a copy in iCloud or on a Mac or PC. It does not necessarily contain every item currently visible on the device because some information is already synchronized elsewhere.
- Erase: Deletes the device’s information and settings and returns it to the Hello setup screen. On a working device, this is done in Settings.
- Computer factory restore: Uses Finder or Apple Devices to erase the device and install device software. Apple describes it as removing all information and settings while installing the supported software.
- Restore personal data: During setup, retrieves information from an iCloud backup or a computer backup. This is separate from reinstalling the operating system.
If you are preparing a device for sale or handoff, make and verify a backup before erasing. If you are troubleshooting software corruption, a computer factory restore may be appropriate, but you still need a backup first if you want your data afterward.
Which 2026 method should you choose?
Choose the path that matches whether the device works and whether you need only a clean start or a software reinstall.

How do I back up my iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch before resetting it?
Back up before erasing if you want to keep personal content. iCloud is convenient when you have Wi-Fi and sufficient iCloud capacity; a computer backup keeps the copy on local storage and can be encrypted for additional data categories.
Option 1: Make an iCloud backup
- Connect the device to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, tap your Apple Account name, then tap iCloud.
- Open iCloud Backup and choose Back Up Now. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi until the backup completes.
- Check the latest-backup date and time shown on the iCloud Backup screen before you erase the device.
iCloud backups are stored in iCloud, are encrypted by default, and can be created without a cable. They depend on available iCloud storage. Data already synchronized with iCloud is not duplicated in the backup itself. For example, Apple identifies Contacts, Calendars, and Notes as categories that can be excluded because they sync separately. Photos are excluded when iCloud Photos is enabled, and messages are excluded when Messages in iCloud is enabled.
Option 2: Make a computer backup
- Update the Mac or PC so its device-management software is current.
- Connect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with a compatible USB or USB-C data cable. Check both the device connector and the computer port; the required cable depends on the exact models.
- On a Mac, open Finder. On Windows, open Apple Devices.
- Select the device, follow any trust prompts, and choose the computer-backup command. Start the backup and wait for the completion indicator or latest-backup date to update.
- If the backup includes Health, Activity, or Keychain data, enable Encrypt local backup and create a password you can retain securely. Encryption is available for computer backups but is off by default.
A computer backup is stored on that Mac or PC and uses its available local capacity. It does not include information already synchronized to iCloud, content synced from the computer, purchased-store content, or certain other categories. Health, Activity, and Keychain data require an encrypted computer backup. The encryption password is separate from the device passcode and is required when that backup is restored.
Should you make both kinds of backup?
Making an iCloud backup and an encrypted computer backup gives you two storage locations and two restore routes. It is useful when you have enough iCloud and local capacity, but remember which computer holds the local copy and the password for any encrypted backup.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How can I verify that my backup is usable?
Verification is more than seeing that a backup command finished. Confirm that the latest-backup date is recent, that the correct Apple Account is signed in for iCloud, and that any computer backup appears in Finder or Apple Devices on the computer where it was created.
- Review synchronized categories separately. If Contacts, Notes, Calendars, photos, or messages are managed by their respective iCloud sync features, confirm that synchronization has completed before erasing.
- For a computer backup, record the computer location and whether encryption is enabled.
- Store the encrypted-backup password where you can retrieve it. A password-protected computer backup cannot be selected successfully without that password.
- Do not disconnect or power off during a backup that has not reported completion.
How do I factory-reset a working iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch?
Use the device’s Settings route when the operating system is functioning and you simply need to remove your information. This erases the device and ends at the Hello screen; it does not require a computer or cable.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset [device]. The bracketed label reflects the device type shown in Settings.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Read the eSIM choice carefully. Keeping the eSIM preserves the cellular plan on the device. Erasing the eSIM removes that cellular plan from the device, and Apple says you must contact the carrier to reactivate service.
- Enter the device passcode and, when requested, the Apple Account password.
- Confirm the erase and wait for the Hello screen.
Do not erase an eSIM casually when the device will continue to be used on the same cellular plan. For a handoff, decide whether the plan belongs with the device or should remain available for your replacement device, then follow the carrier’s reactivation process if you erased it.

When should I use a computer factory restore?
Use a computer factory restore when you need to erase information and settings and reinstall device software, rather than merely clear user data from a working system. Apple directs Mac users to Finder and Windows users to Apple Devices.

Before starting, update the computer and make a backup if you need the device’s personal data later. The process requires a USB or USB-C connection. Apple summarizes the outcome as: “This factory restore removes all information and settings from your device.”
Restore with Finder on a Mac
- Install available macOS and Finder updates.
- Connect the device with a compatible USB or USB-C data cable.
- Open Finder and select the device in the sidebar.
- Accept the trust prompts on the Mac and device if they appear.
- Choose the restore command and follow the on-screen confirmation prompts.
- Leave the device connected while Finder erases it and installs the supported software. When it restarts at Hello, disconnect only when the process indicates it is safe.
Restore with Apple Devices on Windows
- Update Windows and the Apple Devices app.
- Connect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using a compatible USB or USB-C data cable.
- Open Apple Devices and select the connected device.
- Approve trust prompts and choose the restore command.
- Follow the on-screen prompts until the erase and software installation finish and the device displays Hello.
A factory restore and a backup restore are two different stages. The computer restores the operating system and clears settings; your personal content returns only when you later select an iCloud or computer backup during setup.
How do I restore an iPhone or iPad from an iCloud backup?
Choose the iCloud backup during the initial setup flow. If the device has already been configured, Apple requires you to erase it before the setup screen offers the iCloud restore option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Turn on the new or erased device and proceed until the setup screen offers a data-transfer choice.
- Select Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the backup.
- Choose the backup by its date and size, using the most appropriate recent copy.
- Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power. Initial setup can finish before all apps and data have downloaded.
If the selected backup requires a newer iOS or iPadOS version than the device currently has, complete setup without transferring data, update the operating system, erase the device again, and repeat setup so you can select the backup.

Can I restore my iPhone or iPad from a computer backup?
Yes. Connect the new or erased device to the Mac or PC that contains the backup, then select that backup in Finder or Apple Devices. An encrypted backup requires the password created when encryption was enabled.
- Open Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows.
- Connect the new or erased device with a compatible USB or USB-C data cable.
- Select the device and choose the option to restore from a backup.
- Pick the relevant backup stored on that computer.
- Enter the encrypted-backup password if prompted.
- Keep the device connected until the initial restore completes. Apps and other content can continue downloading afterward, so leave the device on Wi-Fi and connected to power.
If you cannot supply the password for an encrypted computer backup, that backup cannot be used through the normal restore flow. The password is not the same as the device passcode, so check your password manager or other secure record before beginning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What data will and will not come back after a restore?
A restore returns data that was included in the selected backup; it does not turn the backup into a perfect mirror of the old device. Synchronized information may reappear by syncing after sign-in rather than by being copied from the backup.

What should I do if backup, erase, or restore fails?
The backup will not start or finish
- For iCloud, confirm Wi-Fi is connected and that iCloud has enough available capacity.
- For a computer, verify the cable carries data, the device appears in Finder or Apple Devices, and the computer has enough local storage.
- If Health, Activity, or Keychain data matters, confirm that local-backup encryption is enabled before starting again.
The computer does not recognize the device
- Reconnect using a compatible cable and check both connector types.
- Accept the trust prompt on the device and computer.
- Update macOS or Windows and the relevant device-management software before retrying.
The setup process refuses the selected backup
- Check whether the backup requires a newer iOS or iPadOS version. If it does, finish setup without transferring data, update the device, erase it, and start setup again.
- For an encrypted computer backup, enter the encryption password rather than the device passcode.
- Make sure you selected the computer that actually stores the backup, not a different Mac or PC.
Cellular service disappeared after erasing
If you erased the eSIM, contact the carrier to reactivate the cellular plan. Keeping the eSIM during the Settings erase avoids that specific reactivation step when the plan should remain on the device.
A practical checklist before handing over or replacing the device
- Identify whether you need only an erase or also a software reinstall.
- Make an iCloud backup, a computer backup, or both.
- Confirm the latest backup date and review synchronized categories.
- Record the location and password of any encrypted computer backup.
- Decide whether to keep or erase the eSIM.
- Use Settings for a working-device erase, or Finder/Apple Devices for a computer factory restore.
- During setup, select the intended iCloud or computer backup and keep the device on Wi-Fi and power while downloads continue.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I lose the password for an encrypted computer backup?
The normal restore process cannot unlock that backup without its encryption password. The device passcode does not substitute for the backup password, so recover the password from your secure records before erasing the source device.
Do I need a cable to make an iCloud backup or erase from Settings?
No. iCloud backup uses Wi-Fi, and the Settings erase runs on the device itself. A compatible USB or USB-C data cable is needed for Finder or Apple Devices workflows.
Why did my photos or messages not appear immediately after setup?
When iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud was enabled, those items were synchronized separately rather than stored in the iCloud backup. Sign in to the same Apple Account and leave the device connected so synchronization can complete.
Can I restore a backup onto a device running an older system version?
Not always. If the backup requires a newer iOS or iPadOS version, update the device first, erase it, and then choose the backup again from the setup screen.
