Choose iPhone Duo if you want one device that works as a phone and opens into a larger reading and multitasking screen; choose iPad mini if you want a dedicated compact tablet, a slightly larger display, and broader Apple Pencil support. This is a comparison of different device roles, not two interchangeable tablets. As of October 4, 2026, Apple says iPhone Duo preorders begin October 16 and availability begins October 23, so it is not yet purchasable or independently tested.

The screen figures are diagonal measurements. They do not tell you exactly how much text a book or web page will show, or establish which screen is more comfortable for a long reading session. Apple’s feature descriptions are product claims, not a matched independent test.
Which is better for reading?
Choose iPad mini for the larger stated reading canvas
The iPad mini’s 8.3-inch display has the larger stated diagonal compared with Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display. Apple lists True Tone, P3 wide color, and an antireflective coating for the mini; it says Duo’s inner display uses a nano-texture finish that reduces glare. Those are useful distinctions when comparing display features, but they do not establish measured eye comfort, text sharpness in a particular app, or how a book page will be laid out.
Choose Duo if a phone-sized device that opens wider suits your reading habits
Duo’s inner display gives you more room than its 5.4-inch outer screen when you open the phone. That can make it a plausible option for occasional reading without carrying a second screen, but Apple’s announced specifications do not prove it replaces an iPad mini for long sessions. Neither a direct reading-comfort comparison nor ebook page-capacity measurements are established here.

Which is better for travel?
Duo is the more obvious consolidation option
When closed, Duo is a phone; opened, it offers its larger display. If you already travel with an iPhone and want a bigger screen in the same device, that combined role is its main appeal. Apple calls it pocketable when closed. The available specifications do not establish how it holds up to long-term folding or travel wear.
iPad mini makes sense when you want a separate tablet
The mini is a dedicated tablet that Apple says fits in a backpack or purse. It adds a device if you already carry a phone, but it preserves the distinction between your phone and your larger reading or work screen. Which setup is more convenient depends on what you already carry and whether you want to add a tablet or consolidate roles.

Which works better for everyday use and multitasking?
Duo and mini have different operating systems, so similar screen sizes do not mean identical tablet workflows. Apple says iOS 27 on Duo supports Split View, app switching, and two windows of the same app. The mini runs iPadOS, which Apple describes as supporting multiple apps at once. If your everyday routine depends on a particular app layout or multitasking behavior, check that workflow on the relevant operating system rather than assuming the devices behave alike.
What about handwriting and notes?
The iPad mini has the broader published Pencil choice: Apple lists compatibility with both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple announced Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for Duo later in 2026, but as of October 4 that support is future-dated. A Pencil is not necessary for reading; it matters if handwriting, marking up documents, or drawing is part of your intended use.

Battery claims are not a direct comparison
Apple says Duo can provide up to 31 hours of video playback when using its inner display and describes all-day battery life for both devices. These statements are not results from a shared test protocol, so they do not establish which device lasts longer in everyday reading, travel, or mixed use.

- Consider iPhone Duo if your priority is a phone that opens into a larger screen and you want to reduce the number of devices you carry. Its scheduled availability is October 23, 2026, according to Apple.

- Wait for direct evidence if your decision hinges on real-world fold durability, long-session comfort, or which device lasts longer in your own daily routine. Apple’s launch information does not establish those comparisons.
