Galaxy Z Fold8 is the better choice for automation-heavy multitasking, while iPhone Duo is better for trigger-driven automations. Apple’s Shortcuts system can react to a wider range of events, device states, apps, notifications, locations, and home sensors. Samsung’s Modes and Routines system is narrower as a trigger engine, but the Z Fold8 can combine routines with three-app Multi Window, floating windows, App Pairs, Flex layouts, App continuity, and a DeX-style external-monitor workflow.
Choose iPhone Duo if your ideal workflow starts with “when I leave work,” “when I connect to Wi-Fi,” “when this app opens,” or “when a notification arrives.” Choose Galaxy Z Fold8 if the important part is what happens after the trigger: several apps open together, windows arranged on a large inner screen, connectivity and brightness changed as a group, or the phone continuing a desktop-like session on a monitor.
What is the quick verdict?
The two phones optimize different parts of an automated workflow. iPhone Duo wins on trigger breadth and cross-app orchestration; Galaxy Z Fold8 wins on simultaneous app control and desktop-style continuation.

How do iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold8 automation systems work?
iPhone Duo: Shortcuts as an event-and-action engine
Apple Shortcuts separates an automation into a trigger and a sequence of actions. A trigger can be a time, a device state, an app event, a home event or another supported condition. The resulting shortcut can perform multiple actions across Apple services, compatible apps and connected home accessories.
That structure makes iPhone Duo useful for workflows that cross boundaries. A “leave work” shortcut can calculate a route, send an ETA, change Focus and control home devices. The phone does not need to treat those as separate routines if the required actions are available to Shortcuts.
Galaxy Z Fold8: Modes and Routines as an If/Then controller
Samsung Modes and Routines uses an explicit If condition and Then action model. You can start with a recommended routine, build a custom one, create a mode that turns on automatically, or activate a routine through Bixby or Google Assistant. Samsung’s examples include muting notifications and enabling Wi-Fi at work, or lowering brightness at bedtime.

The model is easy to understand: identify a condition, then specify device behavior. Its limitation is scope. Availability varies by Galaxy model and software version, and the actions exposed on one device may not appear on another.
What triggers can iPhone Duo use?
Apple documents more trigger categories than Samsung documents for Modes and Routines. That breadth matters when the phone should notice a context without you manually starting a routine.
Time, schedule and activity triggers
- Time of day
- Sunrise or sunset
- Alarms
- Sleep events
- Apple Watch workouts
- Recognized sounds
These triggers cover recurring schedules and activity-based contexts. For example, a shortcut can respond to a workout event rather than simply running at a fixed clock time.
Connection and device-state triggers
- Joining or leaving a Wi-Fi network
- Connecting to or disconnecting from Bluetooth
- Changing Focus
- Turning Low Power Mode on or off
- Crossing a battery-level threshold
- Connecting or disconnecting a charger
- Scanning an NFC tag
- Opening or closing an app
- Turning Airplane Mode on or off
These are the triggers that make iPhone Duo particularly flexible for context-aware routines. A charger event can start a bedtime sequence, an NFC tag can represent a desk or car, and an app event can prepare a workspace as soon as a specific app opens.

Home and presence triggers
Home automations can react to people arriving or leaving, a scheduled time, an accessory being controlled, or a sensor detecting a condition. This lets the phone coordinate a personal shortcut with lights, switches, climate controls or other compatible home devices instead of limiting the routine to handset settings.

New automation types documented for WWDC26
Apple’s 2026 developer documentation adds three notable trigger types:
- A screenshot being saved
- An external keyboard being connected or disconnected
- A notification received from a selected app
The same documentation describes persistent shortcut storage that survives between runs and syncs through iCloud. That is useful for workflows that need to remember state rather than treating every run as an isolated event.
What can Galaxy Z Fold8 automate?
Galaxy Z Fold8’s strongest automation story is coordinated device behavior. Modes and Routines can change several settings together, so one condition can produce a consistent operating mode.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Work and location-style routines
A work routine can mute notifications, enable Wi-Fi and adjust other device behavior when its condition is met. The exact conditions and actions shown depend on the model and installed software, so verify the available choices on the Z Fold8 you plan to use.
Bedtime and attention routines
A bedtime mode can lower brightness and alter notifications automatically. This is a good fit when the desired result is a predictable handset state rather than a chain of messages, route calculations and third-party actions.
Assistant-activated routines
Samsung documents activation through Bixby or Google Assistant in addition to automatic modes. Voice activation is useful when the context is obvious to you but difficult to express as a device condition, such as starting a presentation setup before connecting to a display.
Where Samsung’s system is less certain
Samsung does not promise identical routine capabilities across every Z Fold generation. Its support material repeatedly qualifies availability by device and software version, and individual apps may not support every Multi Window or launch behavior. Treat a routine as model-specific until the condition and action appear on your own phone.

Galaxy Z Fold8 has the clear advantage when the automated state includes several visible apps. Samsung’s Galaxy Z guide says Multi Window can open up to three apps at once on Galaxy Z Fold. Separate Samsung support material says certain Z Fold models can handle up to five apps, but compatibility varies by model and app; that higher figure should not be treated as a universal Z Fold8 promise.

| Saved app combinations | Not established as an equivalent feature | App Pairs can open selected combinations together |
| Partially folded use | Fold-aware layouts can adapt to the device’s partially folded position in supported apps | Flex-related layouts support hands-free or split-control arrangements in compatible apps |
| Monitor continuation | No comparable desktop mode established here | DeX provides desktop-style continuation on an external display |
For an automated morning workspace, the practical difference is substantial. iPhone Duo can start a sequence and prepare supported services; Galaxy Z Fold8 can present more of the resulting workspace simultaneously.
How does each phone use its foldable screen?
iPhone Duo’s presentation advantage
Apple says the iPhone Duo inner display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Split View lets two apps share that space, and Apple reports fold-aware layouts for apps including Netflix, Prime Video, Slack, Word, Outlook, Fantastical, Things and Bear.
For entertainment, Apple documents layouts in which Netflix and Prime Video move between the outer display, inner display and a partially folded viewing position. That makes the fold itself part of the experience rather than merely a larger canvas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple’s Susan Prescott, vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, said the developer response to iPhone Duo’s larger display and new interaction modes had been strong. The practical qualification is that fold-aware behavior remains app-dependent: an app must be updated to take advantage of the layouts Apple describes.
Galaxy Z Fold8’s control advantage
Samsung documents Flex mode, App continuity, Multi Window and Multi View for its foldables. In everyday use, that means a routine can be paired with a deliberately arranged workspace: one app in the main pane, another in a secondary pane and a third in a floating or split window where supported.
App continuity helps an app move between the cover and inner screens, while App Pairs reduce repeated setup for combinations you use together. DeX adds another level by moving the workflow to a monitor with desktop-like controls instead of keeping every task confined to the phone.
How do you build a useful iPhone Duo automation?
The following example uses the documented “leave work” concept. Labels can change as Apple updates iOS, and every third-party action must be supported by the relevant app.
- Open Shortcuts and create a personal automation.
- Choose the context that should start it, such as a location or another available trigger. If you need a home-presence event, configure it in the Home automation area.
- Add an action to calculate a route or travel time to your destination.
- Add an action that sends the ETA through your chosen messaging app.
- Add a Focus action to switch from your work state to the state you want for the journey home.
- Add compatible Home actions, such as controlling selected accessories when you arrive.
- Run the shortcut manually once, then test the trigger in the real location or state. Check that every app and accessory exposes the action you selected.
For a more technical workflow, use an NFC tag at a desk, a charger connection at night, an app-open trigger for a work tool, or a notification trigger from a selected app. Screenshot and external-keyboard triggers are available in the automation types Apple documents for WWDC26.

How do you build a useful Galaxy Z Fold8 routine?
Samsung’s If/Then model is best used to define a repeatable device state and then pair it with the foldable workspace you want.
- Open Modes and Routines. The exact menu placement can vary with One UI and the Z Fold8 software version.
- Choose a recommended routine or create a custom routine.
- Set the If condition, such as a time, place, connection or other condition offered on your device.
- Set the Then actions, for example enabling Wi-Fi, muting notifications and changing brightness.
- If the workflow needs a named operating state, create a mode that can turn on automatically.
- Add the apps you use together as an App Pair where supported, then arrange them in Multi Window or floating windows.
- Test the routine while the phone is folded, unfolded and connected to any monitor you plan to use. App compatibility can change the resulting layout.
You can also activate a routine with Bixby or Google Assistant when voice control is more convenient than waiting for a condition.
Which phone should you choose for common foldable workflows?
Choose iPhone Duo for context-heavy personal automation
- You want a shortcut to react to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Focus, battery, charging, NFC or app state.
- Your routine needs several cross-app actions, such as route calculation, messaging, Focus changes and home control.
- You want automation from a screenshot, a selected app notification or an external keyboard connection.
- Your home routines depend on people arriving or leaving, accessory control or sensor detection.
- You value fold-aware layouts in supported entertainment and productivity apps more than a three-app desktop.
Choose Galaxy Z Fold8 for automation-plus-multitasking
- Your routine’s main job is changing connectivity, notifications, brightness and related phone settings together.
- You regularly need three visible apps, floating windows or saved App Pairs.
- You want to continue a foldable workflow on a monitor through DeX.
- You prefer a clear If/Then routine builder and can accept model and software caveats.
- Your productivity depends on Flex mode, Multi View and App continuity as much as on the trigger itself.
Choose based on the first failure point
Ask where your current workflow breaks. If the phone cannot detect the situation that should start the routine, iPhone Duo’s trigger catalog is the stronger remedy. If the trigger works but you cannot keep enough information visible afterward, Galaxy Z Fold8’s multitasking and external-display features address the more important problem.

What compatibility and setup limits should you check?
- Model: Samsung’s app-count and routine features are not guaranteed across every Z Fold model.
- Software version: Modes and Routines options can change with One UI updates, and Apple’s newer automation types depend on the software release that includes them.
- App support: A fold-aware layout, Shortcuts action, Multi Window placement or App Pair behavior requires the app to support it.
- Home devices: Presence, sensor and accessory automations require compatible devices configured in Apple’s Home environment.
- Cloud state: Apple’s persistent shortcut storage syncs through iCloud, so continuity depends on the Apple account and iCloud configuration used by the devices.
- Testing: Test the exact combination of trigger, app, folded position and external display. A routine can fire successfully while an app still refuses the requested window arrangement.
What is the final buying framework?
Score your most important workflow on two separate questions: How many ways must the phone recognize the context? and How much must it show or control after the trigger? iPhone Duo leads on the first question because Shortcuts covers event, location, device-state, app, notification and home triggers. Galaxy Z Fold8 leads on the second because Multi Window, floating windows, App Pairs, Flex layouts and DeX can turn a trigger into a larger working environment.
For most power users who describe their goal as “an automation that also becomes my workspace,” Galaxy Z Fold8 is the stronger foldable automation platform. For users whose goal is “make the phone react intelligently to where I am, what I connect to and what just happened,” iPhone Duo is the better match.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can iPhone Duo’s fold-aware layouts be assumed for every app?
No. Apple lists specific apps with fold-aware behavior, but the layout depends on each developer supporting the relevant presentation. An app may still run normally without adapting its controls to the inner or partially folded display.
Why might two Galaxy Z Fold phones show different automation options?
Samsung ties Modes and Routines availability to the device and software version. App support also affects what can launch or appear in a Multi Window arrangement, so a routine should be verified on the exact model and build you intend to use.
Do I need a special accessory for these foldable automation workflows?
Not necessarily, but stands, keyboards, cases and monitor adapters must match the specific foldable model. Check fit, connector support and the phone’s display or DeX requirements before buying; no universal accessory specification applies to every generation.
Is there a benchmark proving one phone is faster at automations?
No controlled benchmark establishes a universal speed winner here. The comparison is based on documented trigger, multitasking and continuity capabilities, so the better choice depends on the workflow you need to automate.
