The safest approach is to keep an automatic iCloud backup and, when your data matters, a second encrypted backup on a Mac or Windows PC. iCloud runs daily when the iPhone or iPad is on power, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. A computer backup gives you a local copy, but you must start it with a cable; encrypt it if you need Health, Activity, or Keychain data. Whichever method you use, check the displayed date and time after backing up and protect the encryption password. This guide explains what each backup contains, the exact steps for iCloud, Finder, iTunes, and Apple Devices, how to manage storage, and how to restore a replacement or erased device.
What does an iPhone or iPad backup protect?
A backup is a recoverable copy of your device information for the day your iPhone or iPad is replaced, lost, damaged, or erased. Apple describes it as a copy you can use in those situations. Use iCloud, a computer, or both, depending on how much redundancy and control you need.
- iCloud Backup: an off-device copy that can run automatically over Wi-Fi.
- Computer backup: a copy stored on the Mac or Windows PC you choose, started manually over USB.
- Two-copy strategy: iCloud protects you if your computer is unavailable, while an encrypted local copy gives you another recovery path if you cannot reach iCloud.
A backup is different from synchronization. Information that is already being synchronized through iCloud is managed by that service rather than duplicated in every backup. Check each app’s iCloud settings so you know whether an item is being synced or included in the device backup.

- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap iCloud Backup.
- Turn on Back Up This iPhone or the corresponding iPad control.
- For an immediate backup, tap Back Up Now and keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi until it finishes.
When does automatic iCloud Backup run?
Apple says the automatic backup runs daily when the device is connected to power, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. If one of those conditions is missing, the backup may wait for the next time all three are true. A manual Back Up Now is the safer choice before travel, repair, trade-in, or an operating-system change.
How do I check the last iCloud backup?
Return to Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup. Read the displayed date and time for the latest completed backup. Do not treat the switch being on as proof that a recent backup completed; the timestamp is the useful check.
How do I manage old iCloud backups?
Review device backups from iPhone or iPad Settings, from System Settings on a Mac, or from iCloud for Windows. Remove backups for devices you no longer own only after confirming that you have another recovery copy. Apple warns that deleting an iCloud backup turns off automatic backup for that device. If iCloud Backup is turned off, Apple says the stored backup remains for 180 days before deletion.
How do I make a local iPhone or iPad backup on a Mac?
Use Finder on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, and iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier. Both workflows require a compatible data cable to connect the device before you start.
Finder on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac with a data cable.
- Open Finder and select the device in the sidebar.
- If prompted, unlock the device and choose Trust on the device and Mac, entering the device passcode when requested.
- In the device window, choose the backup option. Select Encrypt local backup if Health, Activity, or Keychain data must be included.
- Create and confirm an encryption password, then store it in a password manager or another secure place.
- Click Back Up Now.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then read Finder’s displayed date and time for the latest backup.
iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac with a data cable and open iTunes.
- Select the device button, then open the device’s Summary page.
- Choose Encrypt local backup if you need Health, Activity, or Keychain data.
- Create and confirm the encryption password.
- Click Back Up Now, then check the backup date and time shown after completion.
Finder and iTunes store the local copy on the Mac’s available storage. A full drive can stop a backup even when the iPhone or iPad itself has plenty of free space, so check Mac storage before starting a large backup.

How do I back up an iPhone or iPad on a Windows PC?
Use the Apple Devices app when it is available; use iTunes if Apple Devices is not available. Connect the device by cable before opening the backup controls.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Windows PC with a compatible data cable.
- Open Apple Devices. If it is not installed or available on the PC, open iTunes.
- Select the device. In Apple Devices, open General; in iTunes, open Summary.
- Select Encrypt local backup when Health, Activity, or Keychain data must be preserved.
- Create and confirm the encryption password.
- Click Back Up Now and leave the device connected until the process completes.
- Check the displayed date and time to confirm that a new backup exists.
Apple requires the encryption password for an encrypted restore and says it cannot recover the password. Write it down in a secure password manager before you need to restore.

Why should I encrypt a computer backup?
Computer backups are local, but Health, Activity, and Keychain data require the Encrypt local backup option. Without encryption, those categories are not included in the local backup.
- Health data: needed if you want health history to return with the restored device.
- Activity data: needed for activity history and related records.
- Keychain data: needed for saved passwords and other protected credentials that Apple permits in an encrypted backup.
Encryption adds a password that is separate from the device passcode. Apple states that an encrypted backup cannot be recovered without that password. If you lose it, the practical result is that the old encrypted copy cannot be restored; create a new backup with a new password while you still have access to the device.
What is the difference between iCloud and a computer backup?
iCloud is automatic and available away from home, while a computer backup is under your direct control but depends on the computer, cable, and local disk. The following comparison uses Apple’s documented behavior.

| Concern | iCloud Backup | Mac or Windows backup |
|---|---|---|
| Storage location | Apple’s iCloud storage, separate from the device | Your Mac or Windows PC’s local storage |
| How it runs | Automatic daily operation when the device is on power, locked, and on Wi-Fi; Back Up Now starts a manual copy | Manual operation through Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices after connecting a cable |
| Access away from home | Available over Wi-Fi, provided you can sign in and have sufficient iCloud storage | Requires access to the computer that holds the backup and a USB connection for restoration |
| Encryption | Apple says iCloud backups are always encrypted | Encryption is optional; select Encrypt local backup for Health, Activity, and Keychain data |
| Synced information | Information already synchronized through iCloud is handled by sync rather than duplicated as a separate backup item | Content already synchronized through services is likewise not a substitute for checking those services separately |
| Capacity | Limited by available iCloud storage; Apple documents up to 12 TB for iCloud backups, or up to 14 TB with an Apple One Premier plan, as stated in 2026 | Limited by free space on the Mac or PC |
| If a device is lost | The off-device copy remains available when you sign in on a replacement device | The copy remains only if the computer and its storage are still available |
| If the computer is lost | Unaffected, assuming iCloud Backup is current | The local backup may be lost with the computer unless you maintain another copy |
How much iCloud or computer storage do I need?
For iCloud, open the iCloud storage controls from your iPhone or iPad Settings, Mac System Settings, or iCloud for Windows. Remove obsolete device backups only after checking that the device is no longer needed and that another copy exists.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallApple’s 2026 support information says iCloud backups can use up to 12 TB of storage. An Apple One Premier plan can raise the total to 14 TB. Those are service-level limits, not a promise that every account receives that amount automatically; the space available to your backup depends on your plan and the other data stored in iCloud.
For a computer backup, the relevant limit is free space on the Mac or PC. Keep enough room for the backup and for normal operating-system use. If a backup stops for lack of space, free local storage or choose a computer with a larger drive before trying again.
How do I verify that a backup really finished?
Always use the displayed last-backup date and time rather than relying on an icon or switch alone.
- iCloud: open Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup and read the latest timestamp.
- Finder: select the device in Finder and check the backup date and time shown after completion.
- iTunes: open the device’s Summary page and check the latest backup information.
- Apple Devices: select the device, open General, and confirm the new backup time.
If the timestamp is old, trigger a manual backup while the device is connected to power and Wi-Fi for iCloud, or connected by cable for a computer backup. Do not erase or trade in the device until the new timestamp is visible.

How do I restore an iPhone or iPad from a computer backup?
Restoring a computer backup requires the Mac or Windows PC that contains the copy and a USB connection to the replacement or erased device. An encrypted backup also requires its encryption password.
- Turn on the replacement or erased iPhone or iPad and connect it by USB to the Mac or Windows computer containing the backup.
- On a Mac running Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder and select the device. In iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier, open the device’s Summary page. On Windows, open Apple Devices and select the device, or use iTunes if Apple Devices is unavailable.
- In Finder, choose Restore from this backup. In iTunes, choose Restore Backup.
- Select the backup by its date and time, then continue.
- Enter the encryption password when prompted.
- Keep the device connected while the restore runs and until the computer indicates that it is complete.
Select the timestamp that matches the copy you intend to recover. If the list contains several backups, the newest one is not automatically the right one; choose the latest verified copy that contains the information you need.

The iCloud timestamp has not changed
- Confirm that iCloud Backup is still enabled.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to power, lock it, and join a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Use Back Up Now and check whether the timestamp updates.
- Review iCloud storage and remove obsolete device backups if you have confirmed they are no longer needed.
Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices does not see the device
- Reconnect the cable and try a compatible data cable rather than a charge-only cable.
- Unlock the device and accept the Trust prompt if it appears.
- Try another USB port, then reopen Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices.
The computer reports insufficient storage
Free space on the Mac or Windows PC, then start the backup again. The local copy cannot exceed the capacity available on the computer’s storage.
Health or Activity data is missing from a local backup
The local backup was likely created without encryption. Enable Encrypt local backup, create a password you can retain, and make a new backup while the original device is still available.

An old iCloud backup was deleted accidentally
Deleting a backup removes that recovery copy and turns off automatic backup for the device, according to Apple. Turn iCloud Backup back on and create a new backup as soon as possible; do not assume the deleted copy is still available for restoration.
Which backup setup gives the most peace of mind?
For most people, enable iCloud Backup for automatic daily coverage and periodically create an encrypted local backup on a Mac or Windows PC. This combination separates the two copies: one is stored away from the device, and the other is under your control on a computer.
- Turn on iCloud Backup and confirm its timestamp.
- Create an encrypted Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices backup when Health, Activity, or Keychain data matters.
- Store the local-backup password securely and do not rely on memory alone.
- Before repair, replacement, travel, or erasure, run a manual backup and verify the resulting date and time.
- Keep a compatible data cable available for local backups and computer restores.
This setup does not remove the need to manage iCloud capacity or protect the computer that holds the local copy, but it avoids relying on one storage location or one backup method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does iCloud Backup work over cellular data?
Apple’s automatic iCloud Backup condition is a Wi-Fi connection, along with power and a locked device. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, use a computer backup over a cable or wait until the device can join Wi-Fi.
Can deleting an iCloud backup erase the data currently on my iPhone?
Deleting the backup removes the stored recovery copy, not the live information on the device. It does, however, leave you without that version to restore and turns off automatic backup for the device, so make another backup promptly.
Do I need to keep an iPhone connected by cable for iCloud Backup?
No cable is required for the iCloud process itself; the device needs power, a locked screen, and Wi-Fi. A cable is required when you choose Finder, iTunes, or Apple Devices for a local backup or restore.
What should I record when I create an encrypted local backup?
Record the exact encryption password in a secure password manager and note which computer holds the copy. Apple cannot recover that password, so the record is part of making the backup usable later.
