Apple’s former “iPhone 17 Air” is now officially called iPhone Air, and Samsung’s rumored “Galaxy S25 Slim” launched as the Galaxy S25 Edge. By the manufacturers’ published measurements, iPhone Air is nominally thinner: 5.64 mm versus 5.8 mm for the S25 Edge. The difference is small, and the phones trade places on weight, display size, camera hardware and U.S. launch pricing.
What happened to the iPhone 17 Air and Galaxy S25 Slim names?
Apple announced iPhone Air on September 9, 2025, calling it the thinnest iPhone ever made. Samsung’s thin S-series phone reached the market as Galaxy S25 Edge. “Galaxy S25 Slim” was rumor-era wording, not the released phone’s retail name. Apple’s launch announcement and Samsung’s product page describe the released devices: Apple’s iPhone Air announcement and Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy S25 Edge page.
Which phone is thinner?
Apple’s technical specifications give iPhone Air a depth of 5.64 mm; Apple rounded that figure to 5.6 mm in its launch announcement. Samsung lists Galaxy S25 Edge at 5.8 mm. Comparing the technical-specification figures, iPhone Air is thinner by 0.16 mm. These are manufacturer-published dimensions, and Apple and Samsung present them at different rounding precision; the difference should not be read as a meaningful guarantee about how either phone feels in the hand.
Apple also describes iPhone Air as its thinnest iPhone ever, while Samsung calls the S25 Edge its slimmest Galaxy S Series phone. How do their weight, displays and cameras compare?

The S25 Edge is 2 g lighter on the listed specifications and has a 0.2-inch larger display. Those numbers do not establish which handset feels lighter or more comfortable: dimensions, materials and balance also affect handling, and the published specifications do not measure that experience.
Camera counts are not a photo-quality verdict
Samsung lists two rear cameras, including a 200MP wide camera and a 12MP ultra-wide. Apple lists a 48MP Fusion main camera. Megapixel counts describe resolution, not the full imaging system or the quality of a finished photo. The listed hardware alone cannot show which phone takes better pictures, particularly across different lighting, zoom levels and camera modes.

What do the U.S. starting prices tell you?
Apple’s 2025 U.S. launch announcement listed iPhone Air starting at $999. Samsung’s U.S. product page lists Galaxy S25 Edge from $1,099.99 before trade-in. These are U.S.-market reference prices from different sources and dates, not guaranteed current checkout prices; promotions, availability, taxes and trade-in terms can change the amount a buyer pays. Check the current offer for your location before deciding on price.

The published dimensions and feature lists are enough to compare nominal thickness, weight and screen size, but not real-world battery endurance, camera superiority or speed. No reliable independent side-by-side test is established here for those judgments, so neither manufacturer’s specification sheet should be treated as proof that its phone lasts longer, photographs better or performs faster.

Apple lists an iPhone Air MagSafe Battery as sold separately and says it attaches magnetically to iPhone Air to extend battery life. That accessory is a separate purchase; its mention does not substitute for independent battery testing or establish the phone’s endurance in a particular use pattern. Apple also specifies eSIM-only activation with no physical SIM support and IP68 resistance under IEC 60529, tested to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. Samsung lists IP68 water and dust resistance for the S25 Edge, but those ratings should not be treated as a promise of damage-free use in every circumstance.
