Verdict: The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the iPhone to buy if you want Apple’s longest battery life, largest screen and most flexible camera controls. Its 6.9-inch OLED panel, A20 Pro processor, variable-aperture 48MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide, 48MP 4x telephoto and storage options up to 2TB make it the company’s most capable 2026 model.
The upgrade is less compelling for iPhone 17 Pro Max owners. Apple offers four capacities: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The 256GB model is the cheapest way to own the phone and is sufficient for buyers who stream most media, use cloud photo storage and do not keep many large games or downloaded videos locally. Choose 512GB if you routinely record high-resolution video, keep extensive offline media or plan to keep the phone for several years. The 1TB and 2TB tiers are specialist choices for people whose phones are part of a professional video workflow or who want to avoid managing storage at all.
The announcement date was September 9, 2026. Preorders opened September 12, and general availability began September 18. Because storage stock and promotional pricing vary by country and date, compare the final price for the exact capacity you want rather than assuming the launch price still applies.
Design and 6.9-inch display
The Pro Max’s defining physical trait is its 6.9-inch OLED display. It gives games, video-editing timelines, documents and split-screen-style workflows more room than the smaller iPhone 18 Pro. That size is also the reason the phone is not the best fit for every hand: readers who prioritize one-handed use should evaluate the smaller Pro before paying for the Max model.

Long documents require less scrolling, video controls are easier to reach and camera framing is clearer while recording. The trade-off is handling comfort. The available data does not establish the 18 Pro Max’s exact dimensions or weight, so it would be misleading to assign a specific one-handed usability verdict beyond the obvious consequence of a 6.9-inch panel: it occupies more space than the smaller Pro.

For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max averaged 17 hours 54 minutes in the same Tom’s Guide test. That is a 33-minute average advantage for the 18 Pro Max under that specific laboratory-style workload. It does not mean every owner will see exactly 18 hours 27 minutes: cellular signal, screen brightness, camera use, gaming, background activity, temperature and software versions all change real-world endurance.
Use the Tom’s Guide result as a controlled comparison, not a promise of screen-on time for your own routine. A person who records video, navigates over 5G and plays demanding games may see a shorter day, while a reader who mostly sends messages and listens to downloaded audio may exceed the test result. Apple’s own battery and charging claims were based on July 2026 preproduction testing, so independent measurements remain the better guide to relative performance.
Camera system: what the new controls actually add
48MP variable-aperture main camera
The main camera combines a 48MP sensor with a variable aperture. Unlike a fixed-aperture phone camera, it can alter the opening through which light reaches the sensor. In practical terms, that gives photographers more control over exposure and depth of field: you can manage how much of a close subject and its background appear sharp, while also adapting the lens opening to the available light.

18MP front camera

Someone already using an iPhone 17 Pro Max will see a more modest everyday difference because the previous model already delivers much of the same general photography and video capability.
A20 Pro performance and sustained workloads
The A20 Pro is the processor in the 18 Pro Max. It provides the performance headroom expected of Apple’s top-end phone for demanding games, photo processing, 4K-class editing workflows and on-device system features. Sustained performance matters more than a brief benchmark burst when you export video, play a demanding game for an hour or process a large batch of photos. The phone ships with iOS 27. Siri AI can work across apps and use personal context, which means it is intended to handle requests that require more than answering a single spoken question. In theory, that could make tasks such as finding information in your messages and then using it in another app feel more natural.
In practice, Siri AI remains beta software. TechRadar reports that it still makes mistakes and has rough edges. Beta status matters because behavior, supported actions and reliability can change with updates, and a feature that works in one context may fail in another. Treat Siri AI as an optional experiment rather than a dependable replacement for manual controls.
Buy the 18 Pro Max for its screen, battery, cameras and processor. Consider Siri AI a bonus that may become more useful over time, not a feature that justifies paying the Pro Max premium today. If your work depends on consistent voice automation, keep a manual path available.

The 18 Pro Max is a worthwhile upgrade from the 17 Pro Max when you specifically need longer endurance, variable-aperture control or the additional performance margin for sustained workloads. Those are tangible benefits, but they do not transform every photo. Digital Camera World’s conclusion is important: a discounted 17 Pro Max retains much of the same everyday photography and video capability.
Keep the 17 Pro Max if it already lasts through your day, you are satisfied with its fixed-aperture camera behavior and you can buy it at a substantial discount.
