The iPhone 17 is the better pick if you want a smoother, brighter display and upgraded ultra-wide and front cameras; the iPhone 16 can be the better value if it costs considerably less for the same storage and condition. Apple lists A19 for the iPhone 17 and A18 for the iPhone 16, but chip names alone do not establish how much faster one feels in everyday use. The choice comes down mainly to the display and camera upgrades, your preferred screen size, and the current price in your market.

iPhone 17 vs. iPhone 16: the key differences

Display sizes are diagonal measurements; the viewable area is smaller than the standard rectangle Apple uses to measure them. The specifications in this comparison are from Apple: its iPhone 17 specifications, iPhone 16 specifications, and iPhone comparison page. The iPhone 16 specification page is for the UK, while the comparison page is for Canada; storage availability and configurations can vary by market.

Which display is better for you?

iPhone 17: smoother scrolling and an always-on screen

Apple specifies a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display for iPhone 17, with ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and an Always-On feature. The higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations look smoother. Always-On lets the screen show glanceable information without fully waking the display. Its listed outdoor peak brightness is 3,000 nits.

Apple also describes the iPhone 17 as having a Ceramic Shield 2 front with “3x better scratch resistance” and 33% fewer reflections. These are Apple’s product claims, not independent durability or reflection test results.

iPhone 16: a smaller screen

The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and a listed outdoor peak brightness of 2,000 nits. Apple’s cited iPhone 16 specifications do not list ProMotion or Always-On. It may suit you better if you prefer a smaller display or do not particularly value those features.

How do the cameras differ?

Rear cameras: the ultra-wide is the main change

Both phones have a 48MP main camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization and a 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto view. The iPhone 17 upgrades the ultra-wide camera to 48MP, compared with 12MP on the iPhone 16, and Apple lists 48MP macro photography for the newer model. That is a meaningful hardware difference for people who often shoot ultra-wide or close-up scenes; it does not mean every ultra-wide photo will look four times better.

Front camera: more flexible framing on iPhone 17

Apple specifies an 18MP Center Stage front camera for iPhone 17 and a 12MP TrueDepth front camera for iPhone 16. Apple says the iPhone 17 camera can expand its field of view for group selfies and lets users rotate between portrait and landscape framing without moving the phone. The iPhone 17 overview also lists Dual Capture video, which records from the front and rear cameras simultaneously, and ultra-stabilized Dolby Vision video. These specifications describe camera features, not a measured guarantee of better image quality in every situation.

Are the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 equally fast?

Apple lists an A19 chip in iPhone 17 and an A18 in iPhone 16. Its iPhone 17 specifications describe a six-core CPU, five-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and 16-core Neural Engine; the iPhone 16 has a six-core CPU, five-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a head-to-head benchmark. They establish that the 17 has a newer chip generation, but do not by themselves show how much faster it is for a particular task.

Apple lists Apple Intelligence support for both models. Feature availability can change with operating-system version, language, and region, so check current local availability if a specific feature is important to your decision.

Battery life and charging: what Apple’s figures mean

Apple’s comparison material gives the iPhone 17 an estimate of up to 30 hours of video playback and the iPhone 16 up to 22 hours. These are Apple’s stated maximum playback figures, not results from an independent real-world battery test; actual battery life varies with settings and use.

What else is the same?

Both phones have Dynamic Island and HDR support, and both are rated IP68 under IEC standard 60529. Apple specifies testing at a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. That is a laboratory rating, not advice to deliberately expose a phone to water.

Best Value
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Deep Blue- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.

The core main-camera specifications are also broadly similar: both have a 48MP main camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization and an optical-quality 2x telephoto view. The clearest camera hardware distinctions are the iPhone 17’s higher-resolution ultra-wide and its different front-camera system.

Which iPhone should you buy?

Choose iPhone 17 if you value its upgrades

  • You want a 120Hz ProMotion display or Always-On functionality.
  • You often take ultra-wide or macro photos and want the newer 48MP ultra-wide hardware.
  • You take group selfies or video calls and would use the front camera’s flexible framing features.
  • You want the newer model or place value on Apple’s higher stated video-playback estimate.

Consider iPhone 16 if it is the better fit

  • It is considerably cheaper than an iPhone 17 with the same storage, condition, warranty, and carrier terms.
  • You prefer its smaller 6.1-inch display.
  • The 12MP ultra-wide and 12MP front camera meet your needs, and you do not care about ProMotion or Always-On.
  • You want a 128GB option and it is available in your market.

Compare like with like before deciding

There is no reliable universal price gap: current prices, promotions, carrier offers, stock, and refurbished condition vary by market and date. Compare the actual price for the same storage capacity, unlocked or carrier terms, warranty, and condition. Apple’s comparison material shows storage options, but local availability can change; verify current stock before treating a listed capacity as an available choice.
