The iPhone 13 (2021) complete guide: Launch date, features, specs and more comes down to a 6.1-inch iPhone released on September 24, 2021, with an A15 Bionic chip, OLED display, dual cameras, 5G, MagSafe, and 128GB of starting storage. Apple lists the iPhone 13 as compatible with iOS 26 in 2026, but battery age, Lightning, 60Hz scrolling, and missing newer features matter when buying used.
The standard iPhone 13 remains a capable everyday phone, especially when its price is well below newer refurbished models. The best purchase is an unlocked, undamaged unit with a healthy battery, a return window, and a price that reflects its age.
Key takeaways
- Apple announced the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 13 on September 14, 2021, and released it in stores on September 24, 2021.
- The iPhone 13 has an A15 Bionic chip, a four-core GPU, a 6.1-inch 60Hz OLED display, 5G, MagSafe, and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage.
- Apple lists the iPhone 13 as compatible with iOS 26 as of the August 2026 research date, but compatibility does not guarantee every iOS 26 feature or a fixed number of future updates.
- The iPhone 13 records up to 4K video at 60fps and Dolby Vision HDR video, but it has no telephoto camera, no USB-C port, and no 120Hz ProMotion display.
- A used iPhone 13 is most attractive when the battery, repair history, unlocked status, and return policy are clear; a newer refurbished iPhone may be better value when the price gap is small.
iPhone 13 (2021) complete guide: what is the iPhone 13?
The iPhone 13 is Apple’s mainstream flagship iPhone for 2021 and the standard model in the iPhone 13 family. The standard iPhone 13 has a 6.1-inch display and sits between the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini and the more advanced iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The iPhone 13 family is not a group of identical phones. The iPhone 13 Pro models add features such as a ProMotion display, telephoto camera, LiDAR, and ProRAW or ProRes capabilities, while the iPhone 13 mini uses the same general design at a smaller size. The standard iPhone 13 is the focus of this guide.

What are the iPhone 13 design, color, and durability features?
The iPhone 13 has flat aluminum edges, a glass back, and a Ceramic Shield front. Launch colors were Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and PRODUCT(RED). The design feels familiar to anyone who has used an iPhone 12 or newer flat-edge iPhone.
Apple gives the iPhone 13 an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Apple’s technical specification describes resistance to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. IP68 is not a guarantee that a phone is waterproof or safe to submerge.
Liquid damage may not be covered by warranty, and water resistance can weaken after a drop, cracked glass, opening of the chassis, or a repair. Do not deliberately test a used iPhone 13 in water. Inspect the phone for repair and impact damage instead.

The iPhone 13 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2532 × 1170 resolution at 460 pixels per inch. The display supports HDR, True Tone, wide color, and Haptic Touch. Apple rates typical brightness at 800 nits, HDR peak brightness at 1,200 nits, and typical contrast at 2,000,000:1.
OLED technology gives the iPhone 13 deep blacks and strong contrast, while the resolution keeps text and photos sharp. The display is bright enough for most outdoor use, although direct sunlight can still be challenging.
The major display limitation is the 60Hz refresh rate. Scrolling and animations are less fluid than on iPhones with ProMotion and many newer Android phones with high-refresh-rate screens. The iPhone 13 also has a notch; the smaller notch does not provide Dynamic Island functionality.

How fast is the iPhone 13 in 2026?
The iPhone 13 uses Apple’s A15 Bionic chip with a six-core CPU, a four-core GPU, and a Neural Engine. The A15 remains fast enough for messaging, web browsing, navigation, photography, 4K video, multitasking, and demanding games.

The standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini use the four-core GPU configuration. The iPhone 13 Pro models use a higher-core GPU configuration, so “A15 Bionic” does not mean that every iPhone 13 family model has identical graphics performance.
Performance alone is not a strong reason to reject an iPhone 13 in 2026. Battery condition, storage, repair quality, the 60Hz display, Lightning connectivity, and access to newer hardware-dependent software features are more important ownership considerations.
Does the iPhone 13 support iOS 26?
Yes. As of the August 16–18, 2026 research pass, Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility documentation lists the iPhone 13 as compatible with iOS 26.
Software compatibility does not mean that every iOS 26 feature works on the iPhone 13. Apple can limit features by processor generation, Neural Engine capability, region, language, device model, accessories, or service availability. Do not assume that the iPhone 13 supports Apple Intelligence or every newer AI feature without checking Apple’s documentation for the exact feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApple does not promise a fixed number of major iOS updates for the iPhone 13. A careful buying decision separates four questions: whether the phone installs the current major iOS version, whether specific features are available, how long security updates continue, and how long third-party apps support the device.
What cameras does the iPhone 13 have?
The iPhone 13 has a 12MP wide camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera. The wide camera has an ƒ/1.6 aperture and sensor-shift optical image stabilization. The ultrawide camera provides a 120-degree field of view.
The camera system supports Night mode, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR, and Photographic Styles. The main wide camera is the better choice in low light. The ultrawide camera is useful for architecture, landscapes, interiors, and group photographs, but it is generally less capable than the main camera in low light.
Photographic Styles change the visual treatment at capture time rather than simply applying a conventional filter after the photograph is taken. The iPhone 13 does not have a dedicated telephoto lens, macro photography hardware like later Pro models, or a LiDAR scanner. Digital zoom therefore cannot match the reach and detail of optical telephoto zoom.

In daylight, the iPhone 13 produces strong photographs for everyday use. Newer phones can offer better detail, low-light results, zoom flexibility, and computational features, but the iPhone 13’s main camera remains useful for family photos, travel, documents, and social media.

- Up to 19 hours video playback. Face ID. Ceramic Shield front. Aerospace-grade aluminum
What video features does the iPhone 13 support?
The iPhone 13 records 4K video at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second and supports 1080p HD video at multiple frame rates. The phone also supports Dolby Vision HDR recording, sensor-shift stabilization on the wide camera, and stereo recording. Apple lists these capabilities in its official iPhone 13 specifications.
Cinematic mode creates a shallow-depth-of-field effect and automatically shifts focus between subjects. Focus can be adjusted after recording in supported workflows. Cinematic mode is computational rather than the same as using a large-camera lens with naturally shallow optical depth of field.
Hair, glasses, complicated edges, fast movement, and low light can reveal focus or masking artifacts. Cinematic mode is useful for casual storytelling and short-form video, but it is not a substitute for professional cinema equipment. Standard video is the safer choice when reliability matters.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What front camera and Face ID features does the iPhone 13 have?
The iPhone 13 has a 12MP TrueDepth front camera with Face ID, Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting, 4K video recording, Animoji, and Memoji support.
Face ID can be affected by masks, sunglasses, poor positioning, damage to the TrueDepth system, or unauthorized repairs. A used buyer should enroll or test Face ID before completing a purchase. A damaged or replaced front-camera assembly can cause calibration problems or feature restrictions.
How long does the iPhone 13 battery last, and how does it charge?
According to Apple’s technical specifications, the iPhone 13 provides up to 19 hours of video playback, up to 15 hours of streamed video playback, and up to 75 hours of audio playback. These are controlled-test estimates, not a promise of real-world screen-on time.
The iPhone 13 supports MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W and Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W. Apple says the phone can reach up to 50 percent charge in approximately 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher. The fast-charge setup requires a 20W-or-higher USB-C power adapter and a USB-C-to-Lightning cable.
The iPhone 13 battery is not user-removable, and the box does not include a wall charger. The iPhone 13 uses Lightning rather than USB-C, although existing Lightning accessories remain usable and MagSafe accessories are supported.
On a used phone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Check Maximum Capacity, any battery-health warning, whether peak-performance management has been applied, and whether the phone shuts down unexpectedly or performs unusually slowly. Battery health near or below 80 percent may indicate that replacement will be needed sooner, but battery health should be weighed against price, warranty, replacement cost, and intended use rather than treated as an automatic rejection rule.
What connectivity, SIM, and port options does the iPhone 13 have?
The iPhone 13 supports 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS and other location systems, nano-SIM, and eSIM subject to regional model configuration and carrier support. The phone has a Lightning connector and supports MagSafe and Qi wireless charging.

5G bands differ by country and model number. US iPhone 13 units can differ from international versions, and eSIM support or carrier activation can vary by region. Check the model number, country of origin, carrier compatibility, band support, activation status, and blacklist status before importing or buying a used phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To verify an advertised unlocked phone, open Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. The desired result is No SIM restrictions. The word “unlocked” in a listing is not enough evidence.
Which iPhone 13 storage size should you buy?
The iPhone 13 was sold with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage, and it has no microSD card slot. Storage cannot be expanded later, so the right capacity depends on how much media will remain on the phone.
| Storage | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 128GB | Light and moderate users who use iCloud or another cloud-storage service | Less room for offline videos, large games, and extensive 4K recordings |
| 256GB | Frequent photographers, travelers, and users keeping the phone for several years | Higher purchase price, but more useful long-term headroom |
| 512GB | People with a large local media library or extensive video-recording needs | Usually unnecessary for ordinary phone use |
Verify the actual capacity at Settings > General > iPhone Storage rather than relying only on a marketplace listing. For most used buyers, 128GB is sufficient for ordinary apps, photos, messaging, and streaming; 256GB is the safer all-purpose choice for frequent camera use.
How does the iPhone 13 compare with newer iPhones?
The iPhone 13 is still a sensible baseline, but newer models can justify their higher price through a longer expected support horizon, newer processors, USB-C, updated camera hardware, or newer software capabilities. Avoid treating launch reviews or a low listing price as proof that the iPhone 13 is the best value in 2026.
| Option | Why choose it instead of an iPhone 13 | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 12 | Potentially lower used price and similar flat-edge form factor | The iPhone 13 adds a larger battery, brighter display, improved wide camera stabilization, Photographic Styles, Cinematic mode, A15 performance, and 128GB starting storage. |
| iPhone 13 | Lower cost with OLED, A15 performance, dual cameras, 5G, and MagSafe | It retains a 60Hz display, Lightning, an older battery, and no dedicated telephoto camera. |
| Refurbished iPhone 14 | Newer generation and potentially better availability or condition | Compare the actual price and features; a small price difference may favor a newer phone, while a large difference may favor the iPhone 13. |
| Refurbished iPhone 15 | Newer hardware, USB-C, Dynamic Island, more recent camera hardware, and a longer expected software runway | Apple’s observed US refurbished price was $529 for 128GB during the August 2026 research crawl; inventory and price are time-sensitive. |
| Refurbished iPhone 16e | Newer hardware, USB-C, and a longer expected support horizon | Apple’s observed US refurbished price was $419 for 128GB during the August 2026 research crawl; the camera configuration differs from the iPhone 13 and may not suit buyers who value an ultrawide camera. |
| Refurbished iPhone 16 | Newer processor, camera, software capabilities, USB-C, and longer expected support life | Apple’s observed US refurbished price was $619 for 128GB during the August 2026 research crawl; the premium may not matter to a basic user. |
The observed Apple refurbished prices are inventory signals, not permanent prices. Check Apple’s current refurbished iPhone inventory before deciding. Apple’s official refurbished program says certified products receive full functional testing and include a one-year warranty, which can make a newer refurbished model more attractive than an older phone from an unknown marketplace seller.
Is the iPhone 13 worth buying in 2026?
The iPhone 13 is worth considering in 2026 when the phone is substantially cheaper than newer refurbished alternatives, has a healthy or reasonably priced replacement battery, and comes from a seller with a return policy. The A15 chip, OLED display, capable main camera, 5G, MagSafe, and current iOS 26 compatibility cover the needs of many users.
The iPhone 13 is a poor choice when the price is close to a newer refurbished iPhone, when the battery is weak and replacement costs erase the savings, or when the buyer needs USB-C, 120Hz scrolling, advanced zoom, the newest AI features, or the longest possible support horizon.
| Buyer situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Inexpensive everyday iPhone for apps, photos, messages, streaming, and navigation | Buy an iPhone 13 if the battery and seller protections are good. |
| Frequent 4K video recording or large offline media library | Prefer 256GB or a newer model with a suitable storage capacity. |
| Wants USB-C and newer hardware features | Choose a newer iPhone instead. |
| Needs telephoto photography or advanced Pro video tools | Choose a Pro model or newer phone with the required camera hardware. |
| Comparing an iPhone 13 with a similarly priced official refurbished model | Favor the newer refurbished model when warranty, battery, and support life outweigh the iPhone 13’s lower price. |
What should you check before buying a used iPhone 13?
A used iPhone 13 should be inspected for Activation Lock, carrier restrictions, battery condition, repair history, Face ID, cameras, display damage, ports, wireless functions, and return rights before payment.
- Activation Lock: The phone must be erased and reach the setup screen. Do not buy a device still linked to another person’s Apple Account.
- Carrier lock: Open Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock and confirm No SIM restrictions if the phone was advertised as unlocked.
- IMEI and blacklist status: Match the IMEI in Settings with the device and seller documentation, then use the relevant carrier or national database where available.
- Battery: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Check Maximum Capacity, warnings, peak-performance information, unexpected shutdowns, and unusual throttling.
- Parts and service history: Open Settings > General > About and review Parts and Service History where available. A non-genuine display, battery, or camera is not automatic proof that the phone is unusable, but it should reduce price and confidence.
- Face ID: Enroll or test Face ID and confirm reliable unlocking.
- Cameras: Test the wide and ultrawide cameras, autofocus, flash, Portrait mode, video, microphone, and front camera.
- Display: Look for cracks, dead pixels, burn-in, touch failures, abnormal brightness, and problems across the entire keyboard and screen edges.
- Buttons and port: Test the volume buttons, side button, Ring/Silent switch, speakers, microphones, vibration, Lightning charging, and cable fit.
- Wireless functions: Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular service, GPS, NFC or Apple Pay where practical, and wireless charging when it is part of the transaction.
- Physical condition: Inspect camera glass, frame dents, screen separation, liquid indicators where accessible, and signs that the phone has been opened.
- Seller protection: Prefer a seller with a meaningful inspection and return period. Avoid irreversible payment methods for an expensive used device.
Common problems include Activation Lock, a blacklisted or unpaid carrier device, a falsely advertised unlocked status, a hidden battery warning, disabled Face ID after repair, a poor-quality third-party display, reduced camera performance after a non-genuine replacement, water damage, incompatible imported models, and storage capacity that differs from the listing.
Best Value
- Unlocked
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to come with a battery that exceeds 80% of original capacity.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm’s length. Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
Apple’s iPhone repair documentation is a better reference for repair-related decisions than a marketplace listing. Apple or an authorized service provider can also provide a location-specific battery replacement quote; do not assume that a listing’s “new battery” is a genuine Apple replacement.
What accessories does the iPhone 13 need?
The iPhone 13 needs a USB-C power adapter and USB-C-to-Lightning cable for the stated fast-charging setup, because the phone itself has a Lightning port. The retail box does not include a wall charger. The phone also supports MagSafe accessories and Qi wireless charging.
Useful accessories include a MagSafe-compatible case, a tempered-glass screen protector, a USB-C power adapter, a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, and a MagSafe or Qi charger. Choose a case with a correct iPhone 13 fit, raised screen and camera edges, and wireless-charging compatibility. Poorly made camera-lens protectors can add flare or reduce image quality, so they should not be treated as mandatory.

Buyers can check Apple’s iPhone accessories for compatible charging and MagSafe options. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable alone is not the right wired-charging cable for an iPhone 13.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did the iPhone 13 come out?
The iPhone 13 was announced on September 14, 2021, opened for preorder on September 17, and became available in stores on September 24, 2021. The phone originally shipped with iOS 15.
Does the iPhone 13 support iOS 26?
Yes. Apple’s compatibility documentation lists the iPhone 13 as compatible with iOS 26 as of the August 2026 research date. Compatibility does not guarantee access to every iOS 26 feature or a fixed number of future major updates.
Does the iPhone 13 have USB-C?
No. The iPhone 13 uses a Lightning connector. The fast-charging setup requires a USB-C power adapter and a USB-C-to-Lightning cable.
Does the iPhone 13 support Apple Intelligence?
Do not assume that the iPhone 13 supports Apple Intelligence. Apple limits newer AI features by device hardware and feature, so buyers should check Apple’s current documentation for the exact feature rather than treating iOS 26 compatibility as proof of AI support.
Is the iPhone 13 waterproof?
No phone should be treated as waterproof. The iPhone 13 has an IP68-rated resistance claim for controlled conditions of up to 6 meters for 30 minutes, but water resistance can weaken after damage or repair and liquid damage may not be covered by warranty.
Which iPhone 13 storage size should I buy?
Choose 128GB for light or moderate use with cloud storage, 256GB for frequent photography, travel, or several years of use, and 512GB only if you keep a large local media library or record extensive video. The iPhone 13 has no microSD slot.
How do I check whether a used iPhone 13 is unlocked?
Open Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock and look for “No SIM restrictions.” Also verify the IMEI, blacklist status, model number, carrier compatibility, and activation status before paying.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone 13 remains a good 2026 used or refurbished purchase when it is clearly cheaper than newer alternatives and passes a careful battery, lock, repair, camera, display, and connectivity inspection. Its A15 performance, OLED screen, capable cameras, 5G, MagSafe, and iOS 26 compatibility are still valuable. Choose a newer refurbished iPhone when the price gap is small or when USB-C, newer cameras, longer support life, or newer hardware-dependent features matter more than saving money.
