The iPad (A16)—often called the 11th-generation iPad—is the better choice for most new buyers. It keeps the 10th-generation iPad’s design, display, cameras, USB-C port, and accessory compatibility, but adds a newer A16 chip, doubles the entry-level storage from 64GB to 128GB, and introduces a 512GB option. The 10th-generation iPad remains worthwhile when it is substantially cheaper, especially refurbished or open-box.
One naming clarification: Apple officially calls the newer tablet iPad (A16). “11th-generation iPad” is a useful shorthand for shoppers, but it is not Apple’s formal product name.
iPad A16 vs iPad 10th generation: quick comparison

|---|---|---|---|
| Introduced | 2025 | 2022 | The A16 model is three years newer. |
| Chip | A16: 5-core CPU, 4-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine | A14 Bionic: 6-core CPU, 4-core graphics, 16-core Neural Engine | The A16 provides more modern performance headroom, although Apple does not publish a direct comparison benchmark on these specification pages. |

The biggest upgrade is storage, not the screen
The A16 iPad starts with 128GB, while the 2022 iPad 10th generation starts with only 64GB. Advertised capacity is not the same as free space—the operating system and installed apps use some of it—but 128GB is still far more comfortable for downloaded movies, games, photos, school files, and offline music.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBoth models also have a 256GB version, but the A16 adds a 512GB tier. That makes the newer iPad more practical for people who keep large media libraries or several sizeable games and creative projects on the device.

If you mostly browse, read, stream, use email, and take notes, 64GB can be enough. However, it leaves less room for growth and may require more frequent app deletion or reliance on cloud storage. For a new purchase intended to last several years, the A16’s 128GB starting point is one of its most important advantages.
A16 vs A14: how much faster is the newer iPad?
The iPad A16 uses Apple’s A16 chip with a 5-core CPU, 4-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. The 10th-generation model uses the A14 Bionic with a 6-core CPU, 4-core graphics, and 16-core Neural Engine.
Do not compare the processors by core count alone. The A14 has more CPU cores on paper, but that does not make it faster overall. Apple’s specification pages do not provide a direct A16-versus-A14 benchmark, so an exact percentage improvement would be unsubstantiated.
The safe conclusion is that the A16 is the faster and newer platform, giving the 2025 model more headroom for multitasking, demanding games, photo editing, and future versions of apps. The A14 remains perfectly adequate for browsing, video streaming, reading, email, schoolwork, and ordinary office documents.
What performance difference will you notice?
- Web, email, and streaming: Both models are suitable. Storage capacity may matter more than speed for these uses.
- School and office work: Both handle documents and note-taking well, but the A16 is a safer long-term choice for larger files and more simultaneous apps.
- Gaming: The A16 is preferable for demanding games and should offer more performance headroom, although neither is Apple’s premium gaming tablet.
- Photo and video editing: The A16’s processor and 512GB option are useful, but frequent professional editing is better served by an iPad Air or iPad Pro.
- Drawing: Both support the same compatible Apple Pencil models. Neither provides the display or Pencil Pro ecosystem of higher-end iPads.
The display is virtually identical
Do not buy the A16 expecting a better screen. Both iPads use a Liquid Retina IPS display with a 2360×1640 resolution, 264 pixels per inch, True Tone, and 500 nits of brightness.

Apple commonly describes these tablets as having 10.9-inch or 11-inch displays, but the actual diagonal measurement listed in the specifications is 10.86 inches. The difference is marketing terminology, not a screen-size upgrade.
The A16 does not add a brighter panel, OLED, ProMotion, a higher resolution, or a meaningful display-class change. If screen quality is the main reason you want to upgrade from the 10th generation, look at an iPad Air or iPad Pro instead.
Cameras: newer HDR, same basic hardware
Both models have a 12MP ƒ/1.8 rear camera capable of recording 4K video. Both also have a landscape-oriented 12MP Center Stage front camera, which can automatically keep a subject in frame during supported video calls.
The difference is image processing: the A16 lists Smart HDR 4, while the 10th generation lists Smart HDR 3. This can improve how the newer model handles exposure and scenes with contrasting light, but it is not a major camera-hardware upgrade. The A16 does not turn the base iPad into an iPad Pro-style camera system.
For video calls, the experience is nearly the same because both models have the landscape Center Stage camera. The A16’s newer HDR processing may help in difficult lighting, but it does not provide a major reason for most 10th-generation owners to upgrade.

Connectivity differences are minor—with one important cellular exception
Both iPads support Wi-Fi 6. The A16 upgrades Bluetooth from 5.2 to 5.3, but this is a modest connectivity refinement rather than a transformational feature. It should not be a deciding factor unless the prices are otherwise very close.

Apple’s listed A16 cellular configuration is eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray. The cellular 10th-generation iPad has a SIM tray and supports eSIM. If your carrier, travel routine, or existing data plan depends on a physical SIM, confirm compatibility and activation requirements before choosing the A16.
USB-C is present on both, but neither has fast USB transfers
Both tablets use USB-C. The A16 specification lists USB 2.0 transfer speeds of up to 480Mb/s and DisplayPort support. This means the port is convenient for charging, displays, and basic accessories, but it is not suitable for the high-speed external-drive workflows associated with USB 3 or Thunderbolt iPads.
A USB-C hub for iPad A16 can still be useful for connecting basic peripherals, a display, or storage, but choose one with realistic expectations about throughput. A compatible iPad USB-C cable or charger is also a practical replacement accessory; neither tablet requires a proprietary Lightning cable.
Apple Pencil compatibility is unchanged—and easy to get wrong
Apple lists both iPads as compatible with:
- Apple Pencil USB-C
- Apple Pencil 1st generation
The first-generation Pencil requires a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for pairing and charging. The USB-C Pencil is the simpler choice for handwriting, annotations, and basic drawing because it connects more naturally to these USB-C iPads.
The first-generation Pencil remains worth considering if you already own one or need its pressure sensitivity for drawing. However, its adapter requirement is awkward. If you need a new stylus, compare the workflow and features before buying rather than assuming the most expensive Pencil will work.
Important: neither the A16 iPad nor the 10th-generation iPad supports Apple Pencil 2nd generation or Apple Pencil Pro. Do not buy those models for either tablet.

For a straightforward handwriting setup, an Apple Pencil USB-C for iPad is the safer accessory choice. If you already own the older stylus, look for a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and verify that the listing is for the first-generation Apple Pencil connection.
Cases and keyboards: the same design means broad compatibility
Apple lists the same Magic Keyboard Folio as compatible with both tablets. That gives the two models the same official keyboard-and-trackpad option for writing, schoolwork, and light laptop-style productivity.

Apple also groups the models together for its Smart Folio. Their published dimensions are identical—248.6 × 179.5 × 7 mm—and both Wi-Fi versions weigh 477g. Many third-party cases should therefore fit both chassis designs.
Still, do not rely solely on a listing that says “10.9-inch iPad.” Before buying an iPad A16 / iPad 10th generation case and screen protector, check the exact model wording and confirm the camera cutout, buttons, speaker openings, and magnetic attachment points. A case marketed specifically for “iPad A16 / iPad 10th generation” is less ambiguous than one identified only by screen size.
The Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad is the natural option for users who want a keyboard and trackpad, but check the exact seller listing and current availability before ordering. Accessory prices can materially change the value calculation: a discounted iPad paired with an expensive keyboard may cost more overall than a different iPad configuration.
Apple Intelligence: neither iPad supports it
The newer A16 chip does not qualify the base iPad for Apple Intelligence. Apple’s stated iPad requirements include the iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPad models with M1 or later. The iPad A16 and iPad 10th generation are not included.
That means neither tablet should be purchased for Apple Intelligence features such as supported generative writing tools, image-generation features, or related system capabilities. If Apple Intelligence is a requirement, consider an iPad mini with A17 Pro, an iPad Air with M1 or newer, or an iPad Pro with M1 or newer, subject to Apple’s current feature and regional requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Software support and expected useful life
Both models are listed as compatible with iPadOS 27 on Apple’s current compatibility list. The 10th generation has therefore not been excluded from the current major iPadOS release.
That does not guarantee that both tablets will receive the same number of future updates. Apple does not publish a guaranteed support duration for either model. The A16 is three years newer and uses a newer processor, so it is the more conservative choice if you expect to keep the tablet for several years. This is a reasoned longevity expectation, not a promise of a specific number of supported years.

Which iPad should you buy?
Buy the iPad A16 when:
- The price difference from the 10th generation is modest.
- You want at least 128GB without immediately paying for the 256GB tier.
- You plan to keep the tablet for several years.
- You play demanding games or use heavier productivity and creative apps.
- You want the newest processor in Apple’s base-iPad range.
- You are buying a cellular model and can use eSIM.
- You want the option of 512GB storage.
If you are shopping for the newer model, compare current prices for the Apple iPad A16 128GB and 256GB versions. Prices, sellers, promotions, and availability change, so verify the storage, connectivity, and seller details before purchasing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Buy the 10th-generation iPad when:
- It is substantially cheaper than the A16 model.
- You are comfortable buying refurbished or open-box hardware from a reputable seller.
- Your usage is mainly browsing, reading, streaming, school notes, and light productivity.
- You genuinely need only 64GB.
- You already own compatible accessories.
- You need a physical SIM tray on a cellular model.
A discounted iPad 10th generation refurbished can be a sensible value purchase, especially for a child, reader, student, or household tablet. Check battery condition, return coverage, warranty status, storage, and whether the model is Wi-Fi or cellular before ordering.
Do not upgrade solely for these features
- Display size, resolution, brightness, or panel quality
- Weight or physical dimensions
- USB-C availability
- Center Stage video calls
- Apple Pencil compatibility
- Magic Keyboard Folio compatibility
- Apple Intelligence
- Apple’s advertised battery rating
Battery life is rated the same
Apple rates both models for up to 10 hours of battery life when using Wi-Fi and up to 9 hours on cellular data. Real-world results vary with brightness, games, video calls, cellular reception, background activity, accessories, and settings.
The A16 may be the better long-term performance choice, but it does not have a higher advertised battery rating. Do not treat the newer model as a guaranteed all-day battery upgrade.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing 64GB only because it is cheapest. It may be enough for light use, but the 128GB A16 gives considerably more room for apps and offline content.
- Buying the wrong Pencil. Apple Pencil 2 and Apple Pencil Pro do not work with either model.
- Assuming every 10.9-inch case fits perfectly. Confirm model-specific camera and button cutouts.
- Expecting USB 3 speeds. Both tablets use USB-C, but the A16 is specified at USB 2.0 speeds up to 480Mb/s.
- Forgetting the cellular SIM change. The A16 cellular model’s listed configuration is eSIM-only, while the 10th generation includes a physical SIM tray.
- Buying the A16 for Apple Intelligence. Neither base iPad supports it.
- Paying too much for an old 10th-generation model. Compare its total price and storage with the newer 128GB A16 rather than assuming the older tablet is automatically the bargain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the iPad A16 the same as the 11th-generation iPad?
The newer model is officially named iPad (A16). “11th-generation iPad” is a common shorthand used to distinguish it from the 2022 iPad 10th generation, but it is not Apple’s formal product name.
Is the iPad A16 worth upgrading from the 10th generation?
Usually not if you already own the 10th generation and are satisfied with its speed, storage, and battery life. Upgrade for the A16’s newer processor, 128GB base storage, 512GB option, or a longer expected ownership horizon—not for the display, cameras, Pencil support, or keyboard compatibility.
Does the iPad A16 support Apple Pencil Pro?
No. Both the iPad A16 and iPad 10th generation support Apple Pencil USB-C and Apple Pencil 1st generation, but not Apple Pencil 2nd generation or Apple Pencil Pro.
Does the iPad A16 support Apple Intelligence?
No. Apple’s listed iPad requirements include the iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPads with M1 or newer. Neither the A16 iPad nor the 10th-generation iPad qualifies.
Can the same case fit the iPad A16 and iPad 10th generation?
Their published dimensions are identical, and Apple groups them together for its own folio accessories. Many third-party cases should fit, but confirm the exact model listing, camera cutout, buttons, speakers, and magnetic attachment points before buying.

Bottom line: Choose the iPad A16 for a new purchase unless the 2022 iPad 10th generation is meaningfully cheaper. The newer model’s real advantages are the A16 chip, 128GB starting storage, optional 512GB capacity, newer HDR processing, and a better outlook for long-term use. Its screen, size, cameras, battery rating, USB-C limitations, Pencil support, keyboard support, and Apple Intelligence status are otherwise much the same.
