If by “the new open-world life sim” you mean inZOI, the practical choice is straightforward: start with The Sims 4 if you want a free base game, broad Windows/Mac/console availability, lower published Windows requirements and established home-building and Gallery sharing. Choose inZOI if realistic-looking Zois, explorable cities, extensive customization and more autonomous communities appeal to you—and your computer meets its much higher requirements. Neither game is a universal winner; your preferred style, budget and hardware decide the fit.
One important correction: Life by You is not a current alternative. Paradox Interactive canceled it on June 17, 2024, so this is a comparison of the playable Early Access release inZOI and The Sims 4.

Is inZOI better than The Sims 4?

inZOI: a paid Early Access life simulation
inZOI, from inZOI Studio and KRAFTON, entered Early Access on March 27, 2025. You create people called Zois, build and furnish homes, explore cities and shape parts of the environment. The developer describes changing weather, properties and streets, along with personalities, relationships and community behavior.
Its creation tools include more than 250 character-customization options, according to the developer’s storefront description. The same description promotes Canvas for sharing creations and optional on-device generative-AI tools for textures and images, plus image-to-3D objects and video-input motions. Those are developer-described capabilities, not an independent count or benchmark.
The Sims 4: a free base game with optional expansions
The Sims 4 base game is listed as Free To Play. That applies to the base game, not to every feature sold around it: expansions, game packs, stuff packs, kits and Marketplace offerings cost extra. EA describes Create a Sim, Build Mode, neighborhood travel, careers, distinctive neighborhoods and the Gallery for sharing households and builds.

inZOI is substantially more demanding on paper. Its published minimum is 12 GB of RAM and an RTX 2060 6GB or RX 5600 XT 6GB, while The Sims 4’s Steam listing gives a 4 GB RAM minimum and older supported graphics hardware. These are requirements, not frame-rate tests or guarantees of smooth play.
