Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a basic macOS login-window banner or sign-in presentation setting, check Intune’s built-in macOS Login window controls or Jamf Pro’s Login Window configuration-profile payload first. If the goal is a branded cloud-identity or MFA sign-in experience, that is a different product decision: Jamf documents that capability under Jamf Connect, not as the same feature as a standard Jamf Pro banner. The available vendor documentation confirms some overlapping outcomes, but not complete setting-for-setting parity.
Choose the route by the change you need
| Desired change | Intune | Jamf |
|---|---|---|
| Show a static message above the sign-in prompt | Built-in Login window settings include a Banner field. Microsoft documents the macOS Login window controls. | Jamf Pro’s Login Window payload includes a Banner field for a message above the login prompt. Jamf’s Jamf Pro 11.32.0 guide describes the workflow. |
| Change sign-in fields or some login presentation options | Documented controls include requiring username and password fields, showing additional menu-bar information, and hiding local users in the applicable configuration. | The cited Jamf Pro guide establishes the banner workflow, not a complete list of Login Window payload keys. Check current Jamf documentation for the exact setting; the cited guide does not establish that Jamf lacks an equivalent. |
| Show a device-specific identifier in a message | Custom macOS profiles can use device tokens, including {{serialnumber}}, subject to Microsoft’s token behavior and correct case. |
The banner accepts $SERIALNUMBER and $COMPUTERNAME when the corresponding inventory field is populated. |
| Configure shared-Mac login behavior | Microsoft documents Show Other Users Managed and Show full name in a specific shared-device and Platform SSO scenario. | The cited sources do not establish directly comparable Jamf shared-device behavior. |
| Brand an identity-provider and MFA login experience | The cited Intune sources cover Login window settings and a shared-device Platform SSO scenario, not a full branded-login comparison. | Jamf Connect documents a separate login-window authorization plug-in for cloud identity-provider authentication and MFA, with branding-related capabilities. |
What Intune offers through its macOS settings
Intune’s macOS device-feature settings include a Login window section for controlling the sign-in screen and functions available before sign-in. Its listed options include an optional banner message, requiring username and password text fields, displaying additional information in the menu bar, and hiding local users in the applicable configuration. These settings are delivered through Intune configuration profiles. See Microsoft’s Apple device feature settings for Intune.
Start by checking the built-in settings rather than assuming a custom profile is required. Microsoft recommends checking Settings Catalog before using custom settings. If the required control is not exposed, Intune accepts an XML or mobileconfig file for macOS custom profiles. Microsoft explains custom profile formats, channels, and tokens.
When you need a custom profile
- Confirm the exact macOS setting or payload key you need and whether it is supported for your target OS and enrollment setup.
- Choose the profile channel deliberately: Microsoft says the channel cannot be changed after the profile is saved.
- Check targeting and enrollment. Microsoft notes that user-targeted payloads do not apply to devices enrolled without user affinity.
- If inserting device-specific values, use the documented Intune token syntax and confirm token case and behavior for the profile.
These channel and user-affinity cautions concern custom profiles; they should not be read as prerequisites for every built-in Login window setting.
What Jamf Pro offers for a login-window banner
Jamf Pro’s documented route is a computer configuration profile with its Login Window payload. In Jamf Pro Documentation 11.32.0, the administrator enters text in the Banner field, scopes the profile to computers, and saves it; Jamf says the message appears above the login prompt. Read Jamf’s Login Window message instructions.
Insert inventory values
The Jamf banner can use $SERIALNUMBER or $COMPUTERNAME. The associated computer inventory field must contain data for the variable to produce a useful value. This is a different variable syntax from Intune’s documented custom-profile tokens, so do not copy one product’s placeholder into the other product’s profile.
Shared-device sign-in is a scoped Intune scenario
For the shared-Mac Platform SSO scenario described by Microsoft, the Settings Catalog path is Login > Login Window Behavior, with choices named Show Other Users Managed and Show full name. Microsoft specifies macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Company Portal 5.2404.0 or later, and a configured Platform SSO MDM payload for that described implementation. These are prerequisites for that scenario, not a general minimum for every Intune login-window setting. See Microsoft’s shared-device configuration guidance.
Branded cloud identity and MFA involve Jamf Connect
A custom message in Jamf Pro’s Login Window payload is not the same thing as replacing the default login experience for cloud identity authentication. Jamf Connect documents a login-window authorization plug-in that modifies the default macOS login process and UI to enable cloud identity-provider authentication and MFA. Listed capabilities include account creation, custom branding, an acceptable-use screen, and a notification screen. See Jamf’s overview of macOS Login Window with Jamf Connect.

How to make the comparison for your environment
- Define the outcome. Decide whether you need a static notice, device-specific text, a change to user or field presentation, shared-device behavior, or a branded identity/MFA experience.
- Check native controls. Review Intune’s macOS Login window settings and the relevant Jamf Pro payload before introducing a custom profile.
- Validate device data and deployment. For variable-based banners, verify inventory fields or token behavior. Confirm profile scope, enrollment channel, and deployment status in your own environment.
- Confirm product scope and prerequisites. Treat Jamf Connect as a separate identity-login capability, and check its current requirements and compatibility. For Microsoft’s documented shared-device implementation, verify the specified macOS, Company Portal, and Platform SSO prerequisites.
- Compare the exact setting, not the brand names. The cited documentation does not map every Jamf Pro payload key one-to-one against every Intune control. Confirm support for the precise setting and target macOS version in current vendor documentation before choosing a deployment route.
