The Intel Neural Compute Stick 2 (NCS2) is a USB accelerator built for edge inference and computer-vision prototyping, but it is now a discontinued legacy device. Intel’s documented software boundary is OpenVINO 2022.3.1 LTS; a USB connection alone does not make the stick compatible with a modern computer, operating system, or model.

What the Neural Compute Stick 2 does

The NCS2 is a compact accelerator for running deep-learning inference on an edge device rather than sending inference work to the cloud. Intel positioned it for computer-vision and AI prototypes in Internet of Things projects. Its hardware is based on the Intel Movidius Myriad X vision processing unit (VPU), which includes a dedicated neural compute engine. These are Intel’s product descriptions, not independent measurements of performance. Intel’s July 2019 product brief describes the intended use and positioning.

That design can be useful when a prototype needs local inference in a small form factor. Whether a particular project will work depends on the model, supported operations, OpenVINO version, host operating system, and USB setup—not simply on whether the computer has a matching port.

NCS2 hardware and published performance claim

Intel’s specifications list 16 programmable SHAVE cores and a 700 MHz base frequency. The device connects over USB Type-A; Intel’s datasheet lists USB 3.1 Type-A and USB 2.0 Type-A connectivity. Intel also listed TensorFlow and Caffe among its supported frameworks. These are historical product specifications and do not verify that a particular current software stack or model will work. See the Intel NCS2 specifications and Intel NCS2 datasheet.

Intel’s July 2019 product brief advertised an “8X* performance boost over the previous generation.” That is a manufacturer comparison with the original Neural Compute Stick, not an independent benchmark or a comparison with today’s accelerators. The asterisk is part of Intel’s claim; consult the brief’s footnote for its qualifications rather than treating 8× as a general performance guarantee. No independent benchmark is established here.

Discontinuation and support dates

Intel marks the NCS2 discontinued. Its notice gives February 28, 2022 as the last order date, June 30, 2023 as the end of technical support, and June 30, 2024 as the end of warranty support. Those are Intel’s stated lifecycle dates; they do not establish whether third-party sellers still have stock. The Intel discontinuation notice contains the lifecycle information.

Intel’s compatibility guidance, last reviewed March 12, 2026, identifies OpenVINO 2022.3.1 LTS as the latest supported version for the NCS2. Intel’s discontinuation notice describes support on the OpenVINO 2022.3.x LTS track. Read these as a legacy compatibility boundary: they do not mean that current OpenVINO releases support the device. See Intel’s OpenVINO compatibility article.

What to check before building with an NCS2

Confirm the complete software stack

Start with the OpenVINO version required by the device, then verify that it can be installed and used with your host operating system, drivers, and development environment. Intel’s product page lists Windows 10 64-bit, Ubuntu 16.04, and CentOS 7.4. These are legacy listed operating systems, not a promise of compatibility with newer versions. A current computer running a recent operating system may therefore require a separate compatibility investigation.

Check the model and operations

Confirm that the model format, framework conversion path, and operations your application uses are supported by the chosen legacy OpenVINO stack and device. The historical listing of TensorFlow and Caffe does not, by itself, establish compatibility with every model built using those frameworks or with newer framework releases.

Validate the host and connection

Check the actual USB port, any hub or adapter in the setup, and the host’s software configuration. Intel’s Type-A specifications describe the device connection, not a guarantee that every adapter, hub, or host will behave as required. Test the exact combination before relying on it for a demonstration or deployment.

Assess lifecycle risk

Because Intel’s technical and warranty support periods have ended, plan for a setup that may depend on legacy software and community troubleshooting. For a new project, compare candidate hardware by current software lifecycle, model and operation support, host compatibility, measured results on your own workload, connection requirements, availability, and total cost. The available Intel material does not establish a direct modern successor or a like-for-like contemporary alternative.

Is the NCS2 a good choice today?

The NCS2 may still suit an existing prototype or a learning project when its owner can use the documented legacy software stack and verify the specific host and model. It is a much less straightforward choice for a new project that needs current vendor support, current operating-system compatibility, or a predictable long-term deployment. Treat it as legacy hardware, not a currently supported plug-and-play accelerator.

If considering a second-hand unit, confirm its condition and the seller’s return terms, then check compatibility with your intended setup before buying. Intel’s lifecycle dates do not tell you whether a unit is available, functional, or suitable for your project.
