The Intel Core i3-N305 and N100 2-port 10G 2-port 2.5GbE Appliance is a compact CWWK white-box router with two SFP+ 10GbE ports and two Intel i226-V 2.5GbE ports. The Core i3-N305 is the better choice for VPN, IDS/IPS, containers, and virtualization; the N100 suits lighter routing at lower CPU power, but neither version guarantees unrestricted dual-10GbE throughput.

ServeTheHome reviewed this appliance family on August 16, 2024. The review-era units were unusually attractive because they combined four high-speed network ports, Alder Lake-N processors, compact dimensions, and low power consumption at roughly $200–$295 depending on CPU and configuration. The compromises are equally important: an older 82599ES 10GbE controller, constrained PCIe connectivity, active cooling, uncertain accessory quality, and the support risk that comes with a white-box marketplace appliance.

Key takeaways

  • The appliance provides two SFP+ 10GbE ports through an Intel 82599ES controller and two RJ45 2.5GbE ports through Intel i226-V controllers.
  • The N100 has 4 cores/4 threads, up to 3.40 GHz, and a 6 W TDP; the Core i3-N305 has 8 cores/8 threads, up to 3.80 GHz, and a 15 W TDP.
  • The tested 10GbE controller used PCIe Gen2 x4, while the tested M.2 NVMe slot operated at PCIe x1, so two 10GbE ports should not be treated as a guaranteed 20Gbps aggregate path.
  • The reviewed systems were actively cooled; the N305 measured approximately 38–40 dBA, while the tested N100 unit was described as unusually loud.
  • The N305 is the safer performance choice for VPN, IDS/IPS, containers, and virtual machines; the N100 is the value choice for basic routing, VLANs, and low-load services.

What is the Intel Core i3-N305 and N100 2-port 10G 2-port 2.5GbE Appliance?

The Intel Core i3-N305 and N100 2-port 10G 2-port 2.5GbE Appliance is a CWWK Alder Lake-N motherboard platform sold as a complete small router, firewall, or mini-server. It is not one standardized Intel retail appliance or one permanently fixed SKU. CWWK board identifiers reported by ServeTheHome include CW-ADLN-SFP+ N100 and CW-ADLN-SFP+ I3 N305.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CPU is only one part of the product. A seller’s complete bundle can also change the chassis, SO-DIMM, SSD, cooling fan, BIOS, SATA accessories, and power adapter. Buyers should therefore distinguish among the processor, the CWWK motherboard, the network controllers, and the exact assembled appliance listed by a particular seller.

ServeTheHome’s review overview describes the tested units as compact systems with two SFP+ ports, two 2.5GbE ports, M.2 and SATA storage connectivity, USB ports, video outputs, and dual DC-input hardware. Those features are useful for pfSense, OPNsense, Proxmox, Linux routing, NAS services, and edge workloads, but a marketplace listing should be checked against the exact revision before purchase.

What are the main specifications?

The N100 and N305 versions use substantially similar platform hardware. The principal difference is processor capacity, although memory and storage configurations can vary by seller.

Intel’s N-series comparison information identifies the N100 as a four-core, four-thread, 6 W processor and the Core i3-N305 as an eight-core, eight-thread, 15 W processor. Intel lists both processors as Alder Lake-N products launched in Q1 2023 in its Alder Lake-N product listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intel’s official processor specification lists a 16 GB maximum memory figure for this processor family. ServeTheHome tested the N305 appliance with a 32 GB SO-DIMM, so 32 GB clearly existed as a seller or platform configuration in that review, but the 32 GB configuration should not be presented as Intel’s official processor maximum. Buyers should verify whether a particular board BIOS and memory module actually support the capacity being sold.

How are the four network ports connected?

The network topology matters more than the port count. The two SFP+ ports are connected to one Intel 82599ES 10GbE controller, while the two RJ45 ports use Intel i226-V 2.5GbE controllers. In the tested board topology, the 82599ES used PCIe Gen2 x4 and the M.2 NVMe slot was limited to PCIe x1.

Intel N100 / Core i3-N305
        │
        ├── Intel 82599ES ── 2 × SFP+ 10GbE
        ├── Intel i226-V ─── 2 × RJ45 2.5GbE
        ├── M.2 NVMe ─────── PCIe x1 in tested topology
        └── USB / HDMI / SATA / Wi-Fi expansion

ServeTheHome’s internal hardware inspection identifies the 82599ES and i226-V controllers and documents the board’s PCIe arrangement. The exact lane allocation may change in another revision, so the diagram describes the tested units rather than every CWWK appliance sold under a similar title.

PCIe Gen2 x4 has enough theoretical bandwidth for a single 10GbE connection under suitable conditions, but two ports sharing one controller and link face practical limits from protocol overhead, packet size, traffic direction, driver behavior, and host processing. Two visible 10GbE ports do not automatically mean a 20Gbps aggregate router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the appliance really deliver 20Gbps?

No reliable conclusion supports promising 20Gbps aggregate routing. ServeTheHome exceeded 10Gbps in a dual-port 10GbE test under its reported conditions, but the tested system did not approach 20Gbps aggregate throughput. The result shows that the platform can drive more than 10Gbps in a suitable test, not that it can sustain two unrestricted 10Gbps streams.

The reported topology and performance testing also showed why CPU selection cannot solve every limitation. The N305 has substantially more compute capacity than the N100, but both versions use the same 82599ES-based 10GbE arrangement. The N305 is therefore a better processor platform, not automatically a faster dual-port I/O platform.

Performance question What can responsibly be said
Can one 10GbE port exceed 10Gbps in testing? Yes, ServeTheHome reported more than 10Gbps under its test conditions.
Can two 10GbE ports be assumed to provide 20Gbps aggregate? No. The tested appliance did not approach 20Gbps aggregate throughput.
Will routing match a synthetic throughput test? Not necessarily. Firewall rules, packet size, VLANs, NAT, CPU load, and traffic direction change results.
Will VPN or IDS/IPS run at full 10GbE? Do not assume it. Encryption and inspection can become CPU- or software-limited.

For a home network with a single 10GbE uplink, several 2.5GbE clients, VLAN routing, and ordinary firewall rules, the topology may be entirely adequate. A buyer needing documented dual-10GbE line-rate routing, heavy inspection, or predictable high-speed east-west traffic should select a platform with a newer 10GbE controller and a more capable PCIe layout.

Which processor should you choose: N100 or Core i3-N305?

Choose the Core i3-N305 when sustained CPU work matters; choose the N100 when the appliance mainly provides basic network services and the price or system power matters more.

Workload N100 recommendation Core i3-N305 recommendation
Basic NAT, firewalling, DNS, and DHCP Good fit More headroom than necessary
VLAN routing and 2.5GbE gateway duties Good fit for modest rulesets Good fit with more reserve
WireGuard, Tailscale, or multiple VPN tunnels Light to moderate use Preferred for sustained or concurrent use
IDS/IPS and deep packet inspection Potentially limiting Preferred, but test the required throughput
Containers Light services Better for several or more demanding services
Virtual machines Small, occasional workloads Better choice for multiple light VMs
Power-sensitive routing appliance Preferred on CPU TDP Higher CPU capacity at a higher 15 W TDP

The N100’s four cores and 6 W TDP make it attractive for routing, VLANs, DNS/DHCP, lightweight VPN use, and a small homelab. The N305 doubles the core and thread count to eight and raises maximum turbo frequency to 3.80 GHz, making it the more defensible option for VPN processing, IDS/IPS, containers, and virtualization.

The N305’s additional CPU capacity does not remove the shared 10GbE controller and PCIe constraints. Paying extra for the N305 makes sense when the workload is compute-heavy; paying extra solely to obtain two unrestricted 10GbE ports does not.

Is the appliance suitable for pfSense, OPNsense, Proxmox, and Linux?

The x86-64 platform meets the architectural direction required for pfSense, but successful deployment depends on the exact NICs, BIOS, firmware, transceivers, and operating-system version. Netgate’s published third-party pfSense minimum requirements include a 64-bit amd64-compatible CPU, at least 1 GB of RAM, an 8 GB or larger disk, and compatible network interfaces. Netgate also warns that minimum requirements are not performance recommendations for every environment.

pfSense or OPNsense buyers should confirm that both SFP+ interfaces appear, both i226-V interfaces attach to supported drivers, and the intended DACs or optics establish links. A system can boot successfully while still failing the actual deployment because a particular SFP+ module is rejected, a link will not negotiate, or a driver behaves poorly under VLAN or bridge traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before putting the appliance into production, test the following:

  • Interface detection and stable interface naming after reboot.
  • 10GbE DAC and optical-module compatibility with the connected switch.
  • VLAN tagging, trunking, and inter-VLAN routing.
  • NAT and firewall throughput using the packet sizes expected on the network.
  • Hardware checksum, TSO, and LRO settings; offloads can help or cause problems depending on the driver and workload.
  • Bridge or transparent-firewall operation if those modes are required.
  • Power-loss recovery, automatic power-on, watchdog behavior, and BIOS C-state settings.

For Proxmox, test the host with all interfaces enabled before assigning NICs to a virtual machine. PCIe passthrough, IOMMU grouping, lane sharing, and interface resets can matter more than whether the installer detects the hardware. Linux generally offers useful diagnostic tools, but successful Linux driver attachment is not proof that pfSense, OPNsense, or a virtualized firewall will behave identically.

Netgate’s pfSense sizing guidance emphasizes that throughput depends on traffic type, packet size, enabled services, and hardware quality. Specifications alone cannot predict encrypted routing or IDS/IPS performance.

How good are the cooling, noise, and power supplies?

The reviewed appliances should be treated as actively cooled systems, not genuinely fanless systems. The chassis contributes to heat dissipation, but fans move air through the enclosure. ServeTheHome measured the N305 at approximately 38–40 dBA and considered that reasonable for its performance, while the tested N100 appliance had a fan judged excessively loud for a 6 W processor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those noise observations apply to the tested units, not necessarily every seller revision. A marketplace seller may change the fan, thermal interface, BIOS fan curve, or chassis without changing the product title. Buyers seeking a silent office or bedroom appliance should not rely on a “fanless” or “low-power” description without confirming photographs and an independent test of the exact configuration.

Both tested units used 12 V, 5 A, 60 W power supplies. ServeTheHome found that adapters supplied by the same seller differed between units and raised concerns about documentation and regulatory markings on at least one adapter. The review’s power, noise, and conclusion section suggested replacing the supplies.

A replacement adapter must match the appliance’s voltage, connector dimensions, polarity, and current capacity. A reputable regional power supply with clear safety markings is preferable to selecting a random adapter that merely has a compatible-looking plug. Complete-system power consumption will also vary with the SO-DIMM, SSD, fan, transceiver load, and adapter efficiency; processor TDP is not the same as wall power.

What are the 82599ES and NVMe limitations?

The Intel 82599ES is an older 10GbE controller originally introduced in Q2 2009. ServeTheHome reported an expected end-of-life or end-of-support date of May 2025, so the lifecycle concern should be attributed to that review rather than treated as a universal claim about every current driver or operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older hardware is not automatically bad. Mature drivers and broad operating-system recognition can be useful, and the 82599ES may work well with a compatible DAC or optic. The trade-offs are its age, power characteristics, PCIe Gen2 interface, future firmware and operating-system support risk, and the possibility that a new SFP+ module will not work as expected.

The M.2 NVMe slot is another practical compromise. The tested slot operated at PCIe x1, and the SSD did not have a direct thermal interface to the chassis. Storage for pfSense, OPNsense, Proxmox boot, logs, and light containers does not require a high-end NVMe drive, so a cool, modest SSD is more sensible than an expensive performance model whose interface cannot be fully used.

Adding SATA storage, Wi-Fi, or other expansion hardware may change lane allocation or disable another function. Ask the seller for the board’s lane diagram when the exact configuration matters, and test the final combination rather than assuming that every M.2, SATA, Wi-Fi, and network feature can operate at its advertised maximum simultaneously.

What SFP+ compatibility problems should buyers expect?

SFP+ ports do not guarantee compatibility with every optic, DAC, or 10GBASE-T module. The switch and appliance must agree on link mode, and the 82599ES may apply module-coding or firmware expectations that differ between transceivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before ordering optics or cables, verify the required fiber wavelength and type, whether the connection uses 10GBASE-SR or 10GBASE-LR, whether a passive or active DAC is appropriate, and whether the seller or operating system reports the module correctly. Confirm whether auto-negotiation is supported or whether the switch and appliance require explicit configuration.

A sensible acceptance test is to boot the intended operating system, connect the exact DAC or optic to the intended switch, confirm link establishment, pass VLAN-tagged traffic, reboot both ends, and repeat after a cold power cycle. Keep a copper or alternate management path available while testing so an incompatible SFP+ module does not lock you out.

What did the appliance cost, and what should it cost now?

ServeTheHome reported review-era pricing of approximately $200–$205 for the N100 model and approximately $290–$295 for the Core i3-N305 model in August 2024. Those are historical prices, not verified current retail prices, and configuration, discounts, shipping, tax, import fees, memory, SSD, PSU, and warranty can materially change the final cost.

Buyer priority Best direction Why
Lowest purchase price and light routing N100 configuration Lower CPU TDP and sufficient capacity for ordinary gateway services
VPN, IDS/IPS, containers, or VMs N305 configuration Eight cores/eight threads provide more compute headroom
Guaranteed dual-10GbE line rate Different PCIe platform The tested CWWK topology did not approach 20Gbps aggregate
Formal support and predictable lifecycle Supported firewall appliance White-box pricing comes with greater seller and component uncertainty

The price premium for the N305 is justified when the appliance will run compute-heavy services. The N100 is better value when the buyer needs the ports but not sustained CPU throughput. Neither price is attractive if a replacement PSU, compatible SFP+ cables, extra RAM, or a return shipment is likely to erase the initial saving.

Who should buy this CWWK appliance?

Buy the N100 version when the appliance will mainly perform NAT, firewalling, VLAN routing, DNS, DHCP, light WireGuard or Tailscale services, or low-load homelab duties. The N100 is also sensible when the N305 price premium is substantial and the buyer accepts that the tested N100 fan may not be quiet.

Buy the N305 version when the appliance will combine networking with containers, several light virtual machines, heavier VPN use, IDS/IPS, deep packet inspection, or other sustained CPU work. The N305 provides the stronger long-term workload margin, but it still does not turn the shared 82599ES connection into a guaranteed dual-10GbE line-rate system.

Reject this platform when the deployment needs enterprise support, ECC memory, redundant storage or power, a formal warranty, silent operation, a stable long-term SKU, certified power-supply documentation, or documented dual-10GbE line-rate routing. A supported appliance or a more capable used enterprise platform may be a better engineering decision even if the purchase price is higher.

What should you check before ordering?

  1. Confirm the board: Ask whether the unit is the CW-ADLN-SFP+ N100, CW-ADLN-SFP+ I3 N305, or another revision.
  2. Confirm the network topology: Ask how the 82599ES and M.2 slot are connected and whether adding SATA, Wi-Fi, or another expansion device changes lane allocation.
  3. Confirm the bundle: Get the exact RAM type and capacity, SSD model, fan arrangement, BIOS version, chassis revision, and power-adapter model in writing.
  4. Confirm operating-system behavior: Ask whether the exact revision has been tested with the intended pfSense, OPNsense, Proxmox, or Linux release.
  5. Confirm SFP+ support: Identify compatible DACs and optics rather than assuming any 10GbE module will work.
  6. Plan a return test: Test every port, VLAN, reboot, cold boot, storage device, and intended traffic path during the seller’s return period.
  7. Inspect the power supply: Verify output specifications and safety markings, and budget for a reputable replacement if the included adapter is questionable.
  8. Measure the real workload: Test packet sizes, NAT, VPN, IDS/IPS, and aggregate traffic that resemble the production network.

What alternatives make more sense?

The right alternative depends on whether the priority is port type, throughput, support, or power consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Alternative Strength Trade-off Best for
CWWK newer N-series appliance Newer CWWK design with four Intel i226-V 2.5GbE ports, fanless aluminum cooling, one SO-DIMM slot, and M.2 expansion Not a direct replacement for two onboard SFP+ 10GbE ports Four-port 2.5GbE routing and low-power homelabs
CWWK 82599ES dual-10G expansion card Can add dual optical 10GbE to a compatible system Requires compatible PCIe signaling, physical fit, cooling, faceplate, and lane allocation DIY upgrades where the host platform is verified
Netgate appliance Clearer relationship between hardware support and pfSense software Usually less flexible and more expensive than a white-box appliance Buyers prioritizing support and predictable deployment
Used enterprise hardware Potentially better management, cooling, and driver maturity Usually larger, less efficient, older, or noisier Buyers prioritizing lifecycle and serviceability over compactness
Newer PCIe-based 10GbE appliance Potentially newer controller, PCIe Gen3-or-newer connectivity, and better aggregate performance Higher cost and requires verification of throughput, optics, cooling, and support Dependable dual-10GbE routing and inspection

CWWK’s newer N-series listing is a different design with four i226-V 2.5GbE ports. It may be a better match for an all-2.5GbE network, but it is not equivalent to the reviewed dual-SFP+ appliance. CWWK also lists a dual-10G 82599ES expansion option; that card is not a complete router and should not be bought without checking the host system’s PCIe and mechanical compatibility.

Final recommendation

This CWWK appliance is compelling when four high-speed ports in a small, inexpensive box are more important than enterprise support or unrestricted aggregate throughput. It is a particularly interesting homelab and small-office platform for one 10GbE path, several 2.5GbE clients, VLAN routing, firewalling, and light edge services.

The Core i3-N305 is the recommended configuration for mixed networking and compute because its eight cores provide meaningful headroom for VPN, IDS/IPS, containers, and virtual machines. The N100 is the rational value choice for basic routing and low-load services, but buyers should not assume that its lower 6 W processor TDP makes the complete unit silent.

The purchase is difficult to justify for a guaranteed dual-10GbE firewall, a silent appliance, a supported enterprise deployment, or a system requiring high-performance NVMe storage. Treat the exact seller listing, fan, SSD, RAM, BIOS, transceivers, and power adapter as part of the product—not as interchangeable details—and test the complete configuration before relying on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CWWK N100/N305 appliance truly fanless?

No. The units reviewed by ServeTheHome used fans, and the N305 measured approximately 38–40 dBA. The tested N100 unit was considered unusually loud, although fan noise can vary by seller revision and configuration.

Can this appliance route 20Gbps through its two 10GbE ports?

Do not assume 20Gbps aggregate routing. ServeTheHome reported more than 10Gbps under test conditions but said the tested system did not approach 20Gbps aggregate throughput, consistent with the shared PCIe Gen2 x4 topology.

Is the N100 or Core i3-N305 better for pfSense?

The N100 is adequate for basic firewalling, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and lighter VPN use. The Core i3-N305 is the better choice for heavier VPN workloads, IDS/IPS, containers, and virtual machines, although exact throughput depends on traffic and configuration.

Does the appliance support 32 GB of RAM?

A 32 GB SO-DIMM was used in the reviewed N305 appliance, but Intel’s official processor specification lists 16 GB maximum memory. Treat 32 GB as a seller or platform configuration that requires validation, not as Intel’s official processor maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
