You do not install RecompStore on a Windows, Linux or macOS computer. RecompStore is a homebrew store for jailbroken PS5 consoles. The PC project from the same effort is RecompLauncher; as of 29 October 2026 its desktop application is still in beta and the website is a directory that sends you to each developer’s release. To play a port today, open its listing, download the Windows, Linux or Mac build from the linked GitHub Releases page, extract it, and provide files from a legally owned copy of the game. You can also use the working GithubLauncher or Ports Launcher to download several projects, but neither supplies game data.
First, which “Recomp Store” product do you mean?
Three similarly named projects are often combined in search results, but they have different jobs:

If you intended the PS5 store, use RecompStore’s official get page instead. The rest of this guide is the PC path.
What is available on PC right now?
RecompLauncher’s homepage says, “Install and update recompiled PC games. No account, no game files: bring your own disc.” Its “How it works” page explains that the future app will install, update and launch recomps, but “Until then, every download here goes straight to its developer’s release.” The /get page currently collects beta emails and says the Windows app is coming soon.

VideoCardz reported on 27 October 2026 that “The application itself has not been released yet. The website currently functions as a directory linking to individual projects.” GameHaunt likewise reported on 29 October that no desktop-app launch window had been announced. Therefore, the dependable method is manual installation from each project’s Releases page. A launcher can automate downloading, but it cannot replace the required ROM, disc image or console dump.
Which installation method should you choose?
Choose manual GitHub installation for the fewest moving parts, GithubLauncher if you want a working downloader for a smaller N64-focused collection, or Ports Launcher for a broad catalog and library features.

Held Games counted 492 Ports Launcher entries in 2026: 158 PlayStation 1 projects, 66 Nintendo 64 projects and 55 Xbox 360 projects. One porter is associated with 104 entries. Those numbers describe the catalog, not a guarantee that every listing is complete or stable. Recompendium listed 1,030 projects across 37 platforms (452 recompilations, 350 ports, 156 decompilations, 43 tools and 29 mods), while RecompLauncher indexed nearly 200 native PC ports. PortedGames tracked 38 N64 projects, 37 of them playable in a stable or beta state.
How do I install a port from RecompLauncher’s catalog?
Until the desktop client launches, RecompLauncher is a curated directory. Each game page links to the developer’s source repository and release files.
- Open the catalog. Visit recomplauncher.com. No account is required. Use Top Charts, Recently Updated, Newest Arrivals, or the console and genre filters.
- Open a project page. Listings include projects such as Ship of Harkinian, Dusklight, Unleashed Recompiled, 2 Ship 2 Harkinian, Bloodborne PC, SpartanPort, SpaghettiKart, Starship, Banjo: Recompiled, Ghostship and Skate 3 Recomp. Popularity counters are live and change frequently; on 29 October 2026, the site showed 6.1K visits for Dusklight, 5.8K for Ship of Harkinian and 5.3K for Unleashed Recompiled.
- Follow “Source on GitHub.” For example, Unleashed Recompiled points to github.com/hedge-dev/UnleashedRecomp. Read the README before downloading because each project has its own supported region, dump format and operating systems.
- Choose a prebuilt release. Download the newest Windows zip, Linux tar.gz or macOS archive. Building from source is optional for most users. Zelda 64: Recompiled explicitly says prebuilt binaries are available in Releases and that building is not required to play.
- Extract to a dedicated folder. Use a folder such as
D:GamesZelda64Recompiled,~/Games/UnleashedRecompiledor a similarly named directory. Do not leave an executable buried in Downloads or mix files from multiple releases. - Run the executable. On first launch, follow the port’s prompt for your own ROM, disc image or console dump. A wrong title or region may be rejected or leave the interface waiting at “Select ROM.”
- Update from the same source. Revisit the project’s Releases page for fixes and read its changelog before replacing an existing folder. Keep your save directory or portable folder backed up.
RecompLauncher’s official wording is: “No account, no game files: bring your own disc.”
Do I need my own ROM, disc image or console dump?
Yes. These projects distribute translated or rebuilt code, not copyrighted game assets. RecompStore states, “No game files are hosted here or in any repository the store links to.” The Zelda 64 README says, “This repository and its releases do not contain game assets. The original game is required to build or run this project.” Unleashed Recompiled similarly requires files from your own legally acquired copy.
Use the dumping instructions in the specific project’s README and check your local law. Do not download ROMs or disc images from unofficial “ROM” sites. The launcher will not bypass a missing dump, and a port may require a precise region, revision, title update or DLC set.

How do I install Zelda 64: Recompiled (Majora’s Mask)?
Zelda 64: Recompiled is a static recompilation of the US Nintendo 64 release of Majora’s Mask. It is not a general emulator and currently accepts only that North American ROM. Ocarina of Time support is planned for this project, not included in the current build; for Ocarina of Time today, Ship of Harkinian is the established decompilation-based alternative.
Hardware and operating-system requirements
- GPU: Direct3D 12 with Shader Model 6, Vulkan 1.2, or Metal Argument Buffers Tier 2.
- Oldest GPUs listed by the project include GeForce GT 630, Radeon HD 7750 (the 2012 model, not an RX 7000 card), and Intel HD 510.
- x86-64 CPU with SSE4.1 (Intel Core 2 Penryn, AMD Bulldozer or newer). ARM64 builds work on ARM64 processors.
- macOS 13 or newer with Apple Silicon or an Intel seventh-generation-or-newer CPU.
- Current graphics drivers. The README specifically advises updating drivers when startup crashes occur.
Installation steps
- Open the repository’s latest Releases page. A 9 October 2026 walkthrough used
Zelda64Recompiled-v1.2.2-Windows.zip, about 29 MB, but release tags are volatile. - Extract the archive and run
Zelda64Recompiled. - At the main menu, select your legally obtained North American N64 Majora’s Mask ROM. Other containers of the same ROM can be converted automatically, but another game, region or unrelated image will not work.
- Start the game after validation. Saves normally go to
%LOCALAPPDATA%/Zelda64Recompiled/saveson Windows,~/.config/Zelda64Recompiled/saveson Linux, or~/Library/Application Support/Zelda64Recompiled/saveson macOS.
For a self-contained installation, create an empty file named portable.txt beside the executable. Configuration, saves and mods then remain in that folder, which is useful for a USB drive or a Steam library. The game supports high framerates (defaulting to the monitor refresh rate), widescreen and ultrawide displays, dual-analog camera control, gyro aiming, autosaves and fast loading. Changing the framerate does not change gameplay speed.
Controller gyro and mods
With a supported controller, first-person items such as the bow can use the gyro sensor. Supported examples include DualShock 4, DualSense, Switch Pro and many Switch-mode third-party controllers such as the 8BitDo Pro 2. Disable controller wrappers such as BetterJoy or DS4Windows if they intercept gyro data.
For Steam Deck gyro, open Gaming Mode → Controller Settings, set Gyro Behavior to As Mouse, and leave activation buttons unset. To add a mod, drag its zip onto the game window before selecting Start Game, or use the in-game Install Mods command. The Thunderstore Zelda 64: Recompiled page provides manual downloads; its manager and r2modman are not required or supported. For randomizer play, download MMRecompRando and follow its README. Windows users may need the latest Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft Learn.
How do I install Unleashed Recompiled (Sonic Unleashed)?
Unleashed Recompiled rebuilds the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed for PC. It supports US and EU releases, not the Japanese release, and requires the game’s title update. Adventure Pack DLC is optional but highly recommended because the project says it supplies high-quality lighting for the entire game.
Requirements and the files you must prepare
- AVX-capable CPU: Intel Sandy Bridge/second-generation Core or AMD Bulldozer/FX and newer.
- GPU supporting Direct3D 12 Shader Model 6 or Vulkan 1.2; the project cites GeForce GT 630, Radeon HD 7750 (2012) and Intel HD 510 as the oldest examples.
- 8 GB RAM.
- Windows 10 version 1909 or a modern Linux distribution such as Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
- 6 GiB of storage without DLC, or 10 GiB with DLC.
- An unmodified Xbox 360, its internal hard drive or USB storage, and either an Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Cable or compatible SATA-to-USB adapter for hard-drive dumps.
Follow the project’s DUMPING-en.md or DUMPING-USB-en.md documentation. The installer will not fetch the game for you.
Installation steps
- Download the latest release from GitHub and extract it into its own folder.
- Run the executable. In the setup wizard, choose Add Files for the large, often extensionless Xbox 360 containers or images; the wizard detects their contents.
- Use Add Folder only when the folder already contains the raw files for the exact requested content. The wizard does not recursively scan arbitrary folders.
- Complete the title-update setup and launch. Add DLC later from the title screen if it was not included initially.
DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers can change LED color with game context, and the DualSense touchpad can spin the world map. The game automatically selects Xbox 360 or PlayStation-style button icons.

How do GithubLauncher and Ports Launcher work?
GithubLauncher (formerly N64RecompLauncher)
Download the Windows or Linux build from SirDiabo’s GitHub repository, unzip it, and run it. Setup guides published in 2026 recommend enabling portable mode, choosing a custom install folder, and enabling experimental and custom games before downloading. Files are placed in a RecompiledGames folder, but you still assign each game’s ROM or dump inside that game’s settings.

A May 2026 user report said the renamed version had no populated game list and recommended 1.70. That is a volatile report, not a permanent rule: inspect current release notes and repository issues before pinning an older build. Coverage from Steam Deck HQ and a December 2025 ports video found no macOS release for this launcher.
On Steam Deck, use the Linux x64 archive, place it in a permanent folder, add the executable to Steam, and select Linux x64 builds for every downloaded recomp. Finish ROM assignment in Desktop Mode; Steam Deck HQ found the launcher’s Game Mode controller navigation awkward. N64 recomps can be connected to Thunderstore for mod distribution.
Ports Launcher
Held Games’ 28 October 2026 guide recommends Ports Launcher on a PC when the widest catalog matters. It is a portable Rust executable with no separate installer, an OpenGL interface, automatic CPU-architecture selection, per-port updates and version picking, dated save-backup archives, a fullscreen controller-friendly library and playtime tracking. The catalog contained 492 entries at that time, although only 42 were tagged quality; read every project README before assuming a listing is finished.
An Android build targets devices such as Retroid, AYN and Anbernic handhelds, but it needs a functioning OpenGL driver. Sixteen entries were tagged android_only. The project uses a rolling release whose files are replaced in place, so an old GitHub release timestamp does not necessarily mean development stopped. A canonical download URL was not established in the available documentation; use the Held Games guide or search the exact project name rather than trusting an unrelated mirror. Ports Launcher also requires your own game data.

Steam Deck is a Linux PC for these purposes. Download the Linux build, not the Windows executable, and complete first-run file selection in Desktop Mode.
- Switch to Desktop Mode and download the project’s Linux archive.
- Extract it to a permanent location such as
~/Games. - Right-click the executable and choose Add to Steam.
- Launch once in Desktop Mode to assign your ROM or dump and confirm that the port starts.
- Return to Gaming Mode and configure controller layouts. For Zelda 64: Recompiled gyro, set Gyro Behavior to As Mouse.
GithubLauncher users should download its Linux x64 build and Linux x64 versions of individual recomps. Ports Launcher’s Linux build is reported to work on Steam Deck. Keep portable files or save directories in a location that will not be removed by a game uninstall.

What does static recompilation change compared with emulation?
Static recompilation translates the original console CPU code into a native PC binary and pairs it with a project-specific runtime. That is why a recompilation can offer modern resolution, high refresh rates, widescreen support and native controller features. It is not a ROM site, and it is not a universal emulator: each project targets a particular game, version and region.
For Zelda, compare the two current approaches carefully. Zelda 64: Recompiled is a static recompilation of North American Majora’s Mask, with RT64 rendering and Thunderstore mods; Ocarina of Time is planned. Ship of Harkinian is a decompilation-based Ocarina of Time port, while 2 Ship 2 Harkinian targets Majora’s Mask. RecompLauncher lists both families, but their asset requirements and mod ecosystems are not interchangeable.

Performance varies by project and renderer. The shared RT64/N64Recomp floor cited in the documentation is D3D12 Shader Model 6 or Vulkan 1.2, with GT 630, Radeon HD 7750 and Intel HD 510 as old examples. No independent lab benchmark establishes an average frame rate for the entire catalog, so treat vendor requirements as compatibility floors rather than an FPS promise.
Is RecompStore free and legal to use?
The software is free; RecompStore says, “Yes. RecompStore and everything in it are free. Some developers take donations on their own pages.” Free software does not mean free game assets. You remain responsible for obtaining and dumping a lawful copy under the rules that apply where you live. Projects state that they are not affiliated with the original console makers or publishers.
Never use a launcher as a reason to download someone else’s ROM or disc image. Keep your original media or digital purchase, follow the project’s dumping guide, and do not redistribute extracted assets. A legal copy may still be insufficient if it is the wrong region, revision or update.
What is the PS5 RecompStore path, if that is what I searched for?
RecompStore itself requires a jailbroken PS5 and is unrelated to installing ports on a PC. The published setup references kstuff, a payload loader on port 9021 such as etaHEN or elfldr, and ShadowMountPlus 1.7 Beta 5 or newer. Its installer is RecompStore-Installer.elf; ShadowMountPlus places title ID PPSA92000 on the home screen, after which the store can self-update. A manual route copies PPSA92000.zip into /data/homebrew/ over FTP.
The store has Games, Emulators, Apps and Tools tabs and still needs the user’s disc image or ROM in the folder expected by each port. Held Games cited PS5 firmware 13.60 or lower on 28 October 2026 and noted that Sony patched the relevant exploit in firmware 14.00; those figures are PS5-only and are not requirements for the PC launchers. Do not follow this jailbreak path if your goal is a Windows, Linux or macOS installation.

What should you install first?
For a single game, use the project’s own GitHub release: it is the most direct and least ambiguous path. Zelda 64: Recompiled is a straightforward first example if you own the North American Majora’s Mask ROM and meet its graphics requirements. Unleashed Recompiled is the better test of the Xbox 360 workflow, but it requires a properly dumped, updated copy and considerably more storage.
Use GithubLauncher when you specifically want a Windows/Linux downloader for N64-oriented projects and are willing to check its current catalog behavior. Use Ports Launcher when its broad library, architecture detection and backup features outweigh the need to review many individual README files. In all cases, the safe workflow is the same: identify the exact project, download from its developer, supply your own game data, and keep saves and configuration backed up.

When will the official RecompLauncher desktop app be released?
No public launch date had been announced by 29 October 2026. The official site only offered a beta waitlist, so check its /get page and the project’s announcements rather than relying on third-party dates.

Can I use a European or Japanese Majora’s Mask ROM with Zelda 64: Recompiled?
The current project accepts only the US Nintendo 64 release. A different region is not a supported substitute, even if the title is otherwise identical.
Do recompiled ports run without an internet connection?
After you download the program and provide the required game files, the game itself generally runs locally. Internet access is mainly needed for downloading releases, updates, mods or optional launcher metadata.
Where are Zelda 64: Recompiled save files stored?
The default locations are %LOCALAPPDATA%/Zelda64Recompiled/saves on Windows, ~/.config/Zelda64Recompiled/saves on Linux and ~/Library/Application Support/Zelda64Recompiled/saves on macOS. Portable mode moves saves into the folder beside the executable.
Can I transfer a RecompLauncher installation between Windows and Steam Deck?
The executable and graphics backend are platform-specific, so copy the appropriate Linux build rather than the Windows files. Back up saves separately and reselect the game data on the new platform; do not assume every port uses the same save format.
