To install ClamAV on Ubuntu, refresh APT and install the distribution package with sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install clamav. Add clamav-daemon only when you need a persistent scanner service. Before the first scan, download the virus databases with freshclam, then scan a file with clamscan /path/to/file or a directory recursively with clamscan -r /path/to/directory. Installing the packages does not by itself prove that always-on desktop protection is enabled; ClamAV’s command-line scanner and daemon are separate operating choices.
What is the correct way to install ClamAV on Ubuntu?
Use Ubuntu’s own APT repositories rather than downloading a separate installer. ClamAV’s package guidance identifies clamav as the command-line interface package and clamav-daemon as the optional scanner daemon. The smallest useful installation for a one-time check is therefore clamav; installing both packages is appropriate when you also intend to configure a persistent daemon.
The complete basic workflow has three separate parts:
- Install the package or packages from your Ubuntu release.
- Download current ClamAV signature databases with FreshClam.
- Run
clamscanagainst the file or directory you select.
Keeping those stages separate matters. ClamAV requires database files before either clamscan or the clamd scanning engine can scan, and package installation alone is not the same thing as enabling real-time protection.

Which Ubuntu versions and hardware are covered?
Package versions come from the repositories configured for your particular Ubuntu release and architecture, so there is no single ClamAV version that applies to every Ubuntu computer. At the time covered by the project documentation, ClamAV regularly tested Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04 on both x86_64 and arm64. That list describes the project’s tested platforms, not a statement that other Ubuntu releases cannot run the packages.
ClamAV’s project documentation recommends at least 3 GiB of RAM and 5 GiB of free disk space for the application. These are project recommendations for Linux server and non-server editions, not installer-enforced minimums, and they are in addition to the space required by Ubuntu itself. Large signature databases and scan workloads can still need more working room.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu release | Use the release installed on the machine and its configured repositories. | Repository contents and package versions vary by release. |
| CPU architecture | Confirm whether the system is x86_64, arm64, or another architecture. | Package metadata and available versions can differ by architecture. |
| Memory | 3 GiB or more is ClamAV’s project recommendation. | Scanning and database handling need working memory; this is not an enforced minimum. |
| Free disk space | 5 GiB or more for the ClamAV application is the project recommendation. | This excludes Ubuntu’s own operating-system requirements. |
You can inspect the candidate version that your own repositories provide before installing:
apt policy clamav
Read the output as local package metadata, not as a universal ClamAV release number. If the command shows no candidate, check the release and enabled package sources before trying another installation method.
Should you install only clamav or add clamav-daemon?
Choose based on how you will scan. A manual, one-off scan needs the command-line package. A persistent scanning design needs the separate daemon package and its own service configuration.
| Setup | Install command | Best for | What it does not provide automatically |
|---|---|---|---|
| Command-line scanner | sudo apt install clamav |
One-time or occasional scans with minimal setup, using clamscan. |
It is not a persistent process and does not by itself create an always-on desktop antivirus interface. |
| Scanner plus daemon | sudo apt install clamav clamav-daemon |
Systems that need the clamd persistent scanning engine or an application integration built around it. |
Installing the package alone does not establish that your release has been configured, started, or monitored exactly as you want. |
ClamAV describes clamscan as a command-line tool for simple scanning with minimal setup and distinguishes it from the daemon. If your goal is only to check a downloaded file or a selected directory, adding the daemon increases the configuration surface without being required for that job.
How do you install ClamAV from Ubuntu’s repositories?
Run the package update first, then install the package that matches your chosen setup. These commands use Ubuntu’s normal package manager and do not require a physical product or separate installer.
Minimal installation for a one-time scan
- Open a terminal account that can use
sudo. - Refresh repository metadata:
sudo apt update
- Install the command-line scanner:
sudo apt install clamav
APT resolves the version for your Ubuntu release and architecture. Review the packages it proposes, confirm the installation, and wait for it to finish. The result is the clamscan utility and the package-managed configuration needed by the Ubuntu build.
Installation that includes the daemon
If you know that an application or operating procedure requires the persistent scanner, install both packages after refreshing APT:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install clamav clamav-daemon
The daemon is an additional deployment choice, not a prerequisite for the basic command-line scan. Service startup and configuration can vary with the Ubuntu release and package configuration, so inspect the behavior of the installed package instead of assuming that installation alone means a continuously running scanner.
Confirm that APT can see the package
When you want to check availability or the selected version without installing anything, use:
apt policy clamav
A missing candidate generally points to a repository or release issue rather than a ClamAV command-line problem. Verify that the machine is running the Ubuntu release you expect and that its configured package sources are enabled, then run apt update again.
How do you download and update ClamAV’s virus databases?
Run FreshClam before the first scan. ClamAV’s documentation states that the database files must be installed before either clamscan or clamd can start scanning, and identifies freshclam as the utility that downloads and updates the official signature databases.
sudo freshclam
FreshClam contacts the configured update service, downloads the available databases, and places them where the Ubuntu package expects them. Let the command complete before starting a scan. A successful update means that the scanner has database files to read; it does not itself scan your files.
Ubuntu APT installations use configuration under /etc/clamav. If FreshClam reports a configuration problem, inspect the files and package-managed settings in that directory and check the service or configuration behavior installed for your Ubuntu release. Avoid replacing those files with settings from an unrelated operating system or release.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Database freshness is a separate concern from package freshness. You can have a current Ubuntu package and still need to run FreshClam to obtain the latest signature data. Conversely, a successful database update does not change which ClamAV package version APT installed.
How do you run your first ClamAV scan?
Use clamscan for a straightforward manual check. Give it the path to one file, or add -r when the target is a directory and its contents should be scanned recursively.
Scan one file
clamscan /path/to/file
Replace the example path with the actual file, such as a download in your home directory. The command examines that selected file using the databases installed by FreshClam.

Scan a directory recursively
clamscan -r /path/to/directory
The -r option requests recursive scanning, so ClamAV traverses the directory and its subdirectories. Choose a scope you can interpret and allow enough time for the amount of data being examined. A home-directory scan can include many files and may require access to paths that your normal account cannot read.
Recommended Free Tools
Scan a protected path when appropriate
If the target contains files your account cannot read, the scan can report permission errors. You may run the command with elevated privileges when you are authorized to inspect that data:
sudo clamscan -r /path/to/directory
Use sudo deliberately: it gives the scanner the same broad file access as the elevated account. Start with a specific directory rather than scanning every mounted filesystem, and avoid paths that contain live system state unless you have a reason to inspect them.
Understand what this workflow means
This is a manually initiated scan. ClamAV’s documentation describes clamscan as non-persistent and best suited to one-time scanning with minimal setup. Closing the terminal does not leave an always-on desktop protection layer running as a result of this command.
When is the ClamAV daemon the better choice?
Use the daemon path when a service or application needs a long-running ClamAV scanning engine rather than a new process for every manual check. The daemon package supplies clamd, which is a separate operating model from clamscan.
Install the daemon package
sudo apt update
sudo apt install clamav clamav-daemon
Installing both packages gives you the command-line tools and the daemon package. It does not, by itself, document how your particular Ubuntu release starts, secures, or monitors the service.
Review package-managed configuration
Start by examining the ClamAV configuration under /etc/clamav. The exact files and service behavior are package-specific, so follow the settings shipped with your release and any integration’s requirements. If an application expects a daemon socket or service, configure that integration according to its documentation rather than assuming that a manual clamscan command will use the daemon.
Do not choose the daemon for a simple one-off check
For a single file or occasional directory scan, the daemon adds no required capability. The command-line package and an up-to-date database are enough for that use case, and the smaller setup is easier to understand and troubleshoot.
What should you do if installation or scanning fails?

apt policy clamav
If no candidate is listed, correct the repository configuration for that release, refresh metadata with sudo apt update, and check the policy output again. Do not assume that a command copied from a different Ubuntu version will select the same package.
FreshClam reports a configuration problem
Inspect the Ubuntu package configuration under /etc/clamav. The APT-based configuration location is part of the package layout; a configuration copied from another distribution can refer to different paths or service assumptions. Read the error text, compare it with the files installed by your package, and correct the local setting before retrying sudo freshclam.
The scanner says databases are missing
Stop the scan and update the databases first:
sudo freshclam
ClamAV explicitly requires database files before scanning. Once FreshClam completes, repeat the original clamscan command against the same file or directory.
A directory scan reports permission errors
The scanner can only inspect files that the account running it can read. Narrow the target to a directory you own, or use sudo only when you are authorized to inspect the protected files. Permission errors do not mean that every file in the target was examined; treat the scan as incomplete until you understand which paths were inaccessible.

Separate the package, database, scanner, and service questions. clamav provides the command-line interface, clamav-daemon provides the daemon option, and FreshClam supplies signatures. None of those facts alone proves that an always-on desktop protection policy is active on your machine, so check the service and integration configuration for the Ubuntu release you installed.
How can you keep the setup maintainable?
Document the Ubuntu release, architecture, package choice, and the date of your last successful database update. Those details make later troubleshooting easier because package versions and repository metadata change over time.
- Use APT for package installation and upgrades so the files remain consistent with Ubuntu’s package database.
- Run FreshClam before manual scans, especially after installing the package on a new system.
- Keep one-time scans on
clamscanunless a real application requirement calls for the daemon. - Review
/etc/clamavwhen diagnosing update or service configuration errors. - Use
apt policy clamavto see what your repositories offer instead of relying on a version number from another Ubuntu release.
These practices do not turn ClamAV into a complete endpoint-security suite. They give you a predictable Ubuntu package installation, current signature data, and a clearly defined manual or daemon-based scanning workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the difference between a package update and a signature update?
An APT update refreshes Ubuntu’s package metadata, while FreshClam downloads ClamAV’s malware-signature databases. They solve different problems and can happen on different schedules.

Is ClamAV enough for every Ubuntu security need?
ClamAV is a malware-scanning component, not a promise that every endpoint-security feature is present. The documented workflow here covers package installation, signature management, one-time scans, and the optional daemon. It does not establish firewall policy, application isolation, exploit prevention, or a graphical always-on security center.
Use the narrowest accurate description when documenting your system: “ClamAV is installed and its signatures were updated” is different from “the computer has verified real-time antivirus protection.” If you need persistent scanning, configure and verify the daemon and its consuming application separately.
What are the practical limits of the basic command-line workflow?
The minimal setup is intentionally simple, but it leaves decisions to the operator. You choose which paths to scan, when to update signatures, and whether elevated access is justified. A recursive scan of a large directory can take substantially more time than checking one file, and inaccessible paths can leave gaps in coverage.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The trade-off is transparency: every scan is an explicit command against an explicit path. That makes clamscan useful for downloaded files, shared directories, and troubleshooting, while a daemon-based design is more suitable when another service needs a continuously available scanning engine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing ClamAV automatically enable real-time protection on Ubuntu?
No. Installing clamav gives you the command-line scanner, and installing clamav-daemon adds the daemon option. You must verify and configure any service or application integration separately; package installation alone is not proof of always-on protection.
How do I find the ClamAV version Ubuntu will install?
Run apt policy clamav before installation. The candidate shown is specific to your configured Ubuntu repositories, release, and architecture, so it can differ from package listings for another system.
Can I scan an external drive with ClamAV?
Yes, provide the mounted drive’s path to clamscan, adding -r for a recursive scan. Make sure the account running the command can read the mounted files; use elevated access only when you are authorized to inspect them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does a newly installed scanner still need FreshClam?
The package installs the scanning software, but ClamAV requires virus-database files before a scan can run. Execute sudo freshclam to download the official databases, then repeat the scan.
Are Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04 the only releases that can run ClamAV?
They are among the Ubuntu releases and architectures listed as regularly tested by the ClamAV project at the documented time, including x86_64 and arm64. That tested-platform list is not a guarantee that every other Ubuntu release is unsupported; check your own release’s repositories and package metadata.
