The best way to collect Instagram data depends on what you need and which accounts you are authorized to access. Meta’s official Instagram API supports approved use cases for Instagram Business and Creator accounts. It is not a general-purpose tool for downloading posts, comments, followers, or analytics from every public profile.
Tools such as Instaloader can download media and metadata by interacting with Instagram behavior outside the stable public API, but they can trigger rate limits, login challenges, HTTP errors, or account restrictions. Instagram’s Terms of Use and Meta’s Automated Data Collection Terms also restrict automated collection without the required permission or authorized mechanism.
This guide updates the outdated 2023 guidance for August 9, 2026. It explains the official API, current permissions, Instaloader commands, limitations, common errors, and a safer way to plan an Instagram data project.

Instagram scraper can describe two very different methods:

That distinction matters. If your project involves an account that you manage, start with the official API. If you want data from arbitrary public profiles, the API generally will not provide the unrestricted access that older scraping tutorials promise.
Read this before collecting Instagram data
Instagram’s Terms of Use prohibit accessing or collecting information in an automated way without Instagram’s express permission, including when the user is logged in. Meta’s Automated Data Collection Terms, effective October 7, 2024, likewise require express written permission or an explicitly authorized mechanism.
Public visibility does not automatically make automated collection permitted. A profile being viewable in a browser is not the same as Meta authorizing a crawler to copy its contents. Instagram also says it may restrict accounts when it detects unauthorized automated access or collection; see its guidance about accounts restricted for data scraping.
Before collecting anything, confirm all of the following:
- You have a documented, legitimate purpose and the necessary authorization.
- The method you use is allowed by the applicable Meta terms, app permissions, and local law.
- You collect only the fields you need rather than building an unrestricted archive.
- You protect access tokens, cookies, comments, profile details, images, and videos as potentially sensitive or personal data.
- You have a retention and deletion policy.
- You have permission to republish or commercially use downloaded images, videos, captions, and comments. Access to a file does not transfer copyright ownership.
Do not use proxy rotation, account rotation, user-agent spoofing, or similar techniques to evade Instagram’s anti-automation systems. They do not create Meta permission, and changing a delay or user-agent does not make an unauthorized collection method compliant.
What the official Instagram API can access
Meta’s current documentation describes two main access routes. Both are centered on Instagram professional accounts: Business and Creator accounts.
Instagram API with Facebook Login
The Facebook Login route supports professional accounts that are linked to a Facebook Page. It can support authorized operations such as:

- Managing and replying to comments on managed media.
- Identifying media in which the managed account is mentioned.
- Finding hashtagged media, subject to the applicable permissions and access requirements.
- Retrieving basic metadata and metrics about other Instagram Business and Creator accounts where the relevant API access is available.
This route does not support consumer or personal Instagram accounts. Its data availability depends on the endpoint, account relationship, permissions, token, and app access level. Consult Meta’s Facebook Login API documentation for the endpoint-specific requirements.
Instagram API with Instagram Login
The newer Instagram Login route does not require an Instagram account to be linked to a Facebook Page. It is also intended for professional accounts rather than arbitrary consumer profiles. The API uses this host:

instagram_business_manage_insightsRequest only the permissions your application actually needs. The older scope names business_basic, business_content_publish, business_manage_comments, and business_manage_messages were deprecated on January 27, 2025. New integrations should use the current instagram_business_* names documented in Meta’s Instagram Login documentation.
Official API access levels
Instagram Login has two important access levels:
- Standard Access: intended for professional accounts that the app owner owns or manages and has added to the App Dashboard.
- Advanced Access: required when the application serves professional accounts that the app owner does not own or manage.
An appropriate Instagram user access token is also required. Having an App ID alone does not grant access to account data. The endpoint, token, account type, permission, and access level must all line up.
API responses use cursor-based pagination. The Facebook Login documentation also states that ordering results is not supported. Therefore, do not design a data pipeline that assumes it can request an arbitrary page number or impose its own server-side ordering on API results.
Insights are available for eligible professional accounts with the appropriate permission, including instagram_business_manage_insights. They are not general analytics for arbitrary personal accounts.
How to set up the current official API
Meta changes the App Dashboard periodically, so treat labels as current guidance rather than permanent screenshots. The general setup flow is:
- Open Meta’s Instagram API documentation and review the requirements for the route that matches your project.
- Open Meta for Developers and create a Business app.
- In the App Dashboard, add the Instagram product.
- For the Page-free professional-account route, select API setup with Instagram Login.
- Connect or add the professional Instagram account required by your application.
- Configure the redirect and application settings required by the selected login flow.
- Request only the current permissions needed by the application, such as
instagram_business_basicfor basic access orinstagram_business_manage_insightsfor insights. - Generate and securely store an appropriate Instagram user access token.
- Test with an account that the app owner owns or manages before applying for Advanced Access for accounts outside that relationship.
If you choose the Facebook Login route instead, the professional Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page. Do not follow older setup guides that tell you to begin with Instagram Basic Display as the normal way to access personal-account data; that is not the current general solution described by Meta’s API documentation.

What the official API cannot do
The official API is not a permission-free replacement for crawling Instagram. In particular, it should not be presented as a way to:
- Download all posts from any public profile.
- Read data from consumer or personal accounts through the Facebook Login API.
- Retrieve arbitrary users’ followers, comments, or private information without a supported relationship and permission.
- Obtain general insights for any personal account.
- Ignore pagination, access-level, token, or endpoint restrictions.
When a requirement falls outside those boundaries, the correct response is usually to redesign the project, ask the account owner to authorize an approved integration, or obtain data directly from the owner instead of attempting to bypass the API.
Using Instaloader for authorized, limited downloads
Instaloader is an open-source Python tool that downloads Instagram media and metadata. It is not Meta’s official API. It relies on Instagram behavior that can change, including internal routes that do not provide the stability of a documented public API.

As of August 9, 2026, the current Instaloader release is 4.15.3, released July 26, 2026. Its release notes include fixes for profile resolution, post metadata fetching, and caption mentions after a newline. Check your installed version rather than copying an old tutorial’s version assumption:
instaloader --versionUse Instaloader only for a clearly authorized and appropriately limited purpose. The commands below describe its current syntax; they do not override Instagram’s terms or authorize access to accounts or content.
Download a profile
The basic command takes a username as the target:
instaloader profile_nameThis downloads the profile’s posts and current profile picture, along with the metadata Instaloader normally saves. Replace profile_name with the permitted target username.
Perform incremental downloads
To stop when Instaloader reaches the first item that has already been downloaded, use:
instaloader --fast-update profile_nameUse a separate latest-download stamp when files may be moved or deleted:

Log in without exposing a password
To authenticate interactively, use:
instaloader --login=your_username profile_nameInstaloader stores a local session file and can reuse that session later. Avoid placing a password directly on the command line because command history and process listings may expose it.
Instaloader can also load cookies from a supported browser:
instaloader --load-cookies BROWSER-NAME profile_nameCurrent supported browser names include Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Arc, LibreWolf, and Opera GX. For the initial session acquisition, --load-cookies and --login are alternative methods; do not combine them for that initial acquisition. Protect browser cookies and Instaloader session files like passwords.

Download hashtagged media
Hashtag targets require login and should normally be quoted so the shell passes the hashtag as one argument:
instaloader --login=your_username '#hashtag'Hashtag availability and results can change, and login does not remove the need for authorization or compliance with Instagram’s terms.
Download one post
To download a post by shortcode, put -- before the shortcode:
instaloader -- -B_K4CykAOtfThe separator prevents a shortcode beginning with a hyphen from being interpreted as a command-line option.
Choose additional content
These options request specific kinds of data:
instaloader --comments profile_name
instaloader --stories profile_name
instaloader --highlights profile_name
instaloader --tagged profile_name
instaloader --reels profile_name
instaloader --no-metadata-json profile_name
instaloader --no-videos profile_name--commentsmakes additional requests and requires login.--storiesand--highlightsrequire login.--taggedrequests tagged content associated with the target.- Reels support was added in Instaloader 4.14, so older installations may not behave like the current release.
--no-metadata-jsondisables metadata JSON files.--no-videosskips video downloads.

Common errors and what they mean
HTTP 429 or repeated rate limiting
HTTP 429 means Instagram is limiting requests. Instaloader’s troubleshooting documentation recommends using the current version. Running multiple Instaloader processes, browsing Instagram at the same time, or using another Instagram client can increase request pressure because requests may share the same account or network context.
The appropriate response is to stop the automated activity, avoid parallel clients, check for an updated Instaloader release, and follow any Instagram account-security prompts. Do not respond by adding proxy rotation, rotating accounts, or disguising the client.
ProfileNotExistsException after an HTTP 403
A real profile can be incorrectly reported as nonexistent when Instagram returns a 403 from an internal GraphQL endpoint. The ProfileNotExistsException message therefore does not always prove that the username was misspelled or the profile was deleted. Check the spelling and the profile manually, confirm that you are using the current Instaloader release, and treat a 403 as a possible upstream block or endpoint change. The behavior is documented in Instaloader issue 2682.

A response such as:
429 Too Many Requests
{message: useragent mismatch, status: fail}can occur even when the caller believes the browser user-agent matches the session. Recent reports indicate that this is an anti-automation response, not necessarily a simple spelling or configuration mistake in the user-agent string. Do not try to defeat it by spoofing or cycling user-agent values; stop and reassess whether the official API is the correct solution. See Instaloader issue 2651.

400, 403, or 429 errors from internal endpoints
Unofficial tools may depend on internal GraphQL or web_profile_info routes. Those routes do not have the stability guarantees of a documented public API. Instagram-side changes have caused 400, 403, and 429 failures that later required Instaloader fixes, as shown in issue 2695 and issue 2704.
If an internal endpoint breaks, update the tool and check its issue tracker. If the project is business-critical, migrate to a supported API or an approved data source instead of building a permanent dependency on reverse-engineered requests.

- Need data from an account your organization manages? Use the official Instagram API first. Choose Instagram Login if the Page-free professional-account flow fits your application, or Facebook Login if the account is linked to a Facebook Page.
- Need publishing, comment moderation, messages, or insights? Map the feature to the current
instagram_business_*permission and confirm the required access level before writing the collector. - Need a one-time archive of content you are authorized to preserve? A maintained tool such as Instaloader may technically help, but review Meta’s terms, obtain the necessary permission, protect the session, and understand that the method can stop working or trigger restrictions.
- Need posts, followers, comments, or analytics from arbitrary public profiles? Do not assume that public visibility makes the data available through the official API. Ask for direct cooperation, use a licensed provider with an authorized collection mechanism, or narrow the requirement.
- Need to evade a block? Stop. Proxy rotation, account rotation, user-agent spoofing, and similar methods increase risk and do not supply authorization.
Data handling checklist
An Instagram collection project should have controls beyond the downloader itself:

- Minimize: define the exact fields, posts, time period, and accounts required.
- Separate credentials: keep API tokens, cookies, and session files outside source control and shared folders.
- Restrict access: use encryption and least-privilege permissions for stored media and metadata.
- Respect deletion: remove data when the purpose ends or when an applicable request requires it.
- Document provenance: record why the data was collected, under which authorization, and when it should expire.
- Review reuse: captions, comments, profile information, images, and videos can contain personal or copyrighted material.
- Monitor failures: repeated 403 or 429 errors may indicate a platform restriction, not a bug to work around.
Why older Instagram scraper tutorials are misleading
Many older guides were written around APIs, permissions, or dashboard products that are no longer the right reference:
- Instagram Basic Display: do not present it as the normal current method for scraping personal accounts. Current Meta documentation centers on professional accounts, and the Facebook Login route explicitly excludes consumer accounts.
- Old permission names: the former
business_*Instagram Login scopes were deprecated on January 27, 2025. Use the currentinstagram_business_*names. - Public equals safe: public availability does not override Instagram’s Terms of Use or Meta’s Automated Data Collection Terms.
- Delays equal compliance: a slower crawler or a changed user-agent may affect detection but does not create permission.
- Universal profile access: the official API does not return every public profile’s posts, followers, comments, and insights on demand.
For current requirements, start with Meta’s Instagram API documentation. For current Instaloader syntax and known failures, use the basic usage guide, CLI options, and release history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the official Instagram API to scrape a personal account?
No. The Facebook Login version of the Instagram API does not support consumer or personal Instagram accounts. Current API access is centered on authorized Instagram Business and Creator accounts, with availability determined by the account relationship, endpoint, token, permissions, and app access level.
Is it legal to scrape a public Instagram profile?
Public visibility does not automatically authorize automated collection. Instagram’s Terms of Use and Meta’s Automated Data Collection Terms place conditions on automated access, and privacy, copyright, and data-protection rules may also apply. Review the applicable terms and obtain the required authorization before collecting or republishing data.
Why does Instaloader say a real profile does not exist?
An HTTP 403 from an internal Instagram endpoint can be translated into ProfileNotExistsException, even when the profile is real. Check the username, update Instaloader, and treat the message as a possible upstream block or endpoint change rather than proof that the account was deleted.
Do the old Instagram API permissions such as business_basic still work?
The former Instagram Login scope names were deprecated on January 27, 2025. New integrations should use names such as instagram_business_basic, instagram_business_content_publish, instagram_business_manage_comments, and instagram_business_manage_messages, together with any current permission required for the feature.
The Bottom Line
Use Meta’s official Instagram API for authorized Business and Creator account workflows. Treat Instaloader as an unofficial, fragile downloader—not as a universal Instagram API—and use it only for a clearly authorized, limited purpose. Never treat public visibility, request delays, proxy rotation, or user-agent changes as permission to automate collection.
