Compare industrial cybersecurity platforms by how safely and accurately they identify your operational technology (OT), interpret its communications, prioritize risk, and fit your response and deployment model—not by feature counts alone. The right choice depends on your sites, devices, protocols, safety and uptime constraints, integrations, and staffing. Shortlist platforms by their strengths, then validate them with a proof of value using representative traffic and real workflows before committing.

Why does buying OT cybersecurity require a different checklist?

OT includes systems that monitor or control physical processes: programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), distributed control systems (DCS), building automation, transportation, water, and other industrial environments. A security platform in these settings has to improve visibility and response without treating production equipment like ordinary office endpoints.

NIST’s initial public draft of SP 800-82 Rev. 4 states that its guidance addresses OT systems’ “unique performance, reliability, and safety requirements.” That is the essential buying constraint: a technically capable product is not a good fit if its deployment or response model conflicts with how a plant, substation, or remote site must operate.

Start by documenting where the platform will be used and what it must help your team do. For example, a buyer may need to identify unmanaged equipment across remote sites, understand communications between devices, prioritize vulnerabilities in operational context, or bring OT alerts into an existing security operations center (SOC). Those are different requirements; a shortlist should be judged against the ones that matter to your environment.

Which capabilities should you compare?

Compare the platform across the complete workflow: discovering equipment, interpreting its behavior, assessing risk, and helping people respond. Ask vendors to demonstrate each requirement with your device families and traffic rather than relying on a feature list.

Asset discovery and inventory

Check whether discovery is agentless and what the platform can identify from network-layer monitoring. A useful inventory should help you distinguish device type, vendor, model, firmware, location, network zone, criticality, and communications. Ask how the product handles devices it cannot identify confidently and how an operator can verify or correct inventory details.

Test coverage against the equipment you actually depend on: PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, historians, engineering workstations, and other relevant systems. Ask what proportion of each group the vendor can identify without installed agents, how it reports partial identification, and whether inventory can be organized by site or zone. Microsoft documents agentless OT and IoT discovery using network-layer monitoring; that makes Defender for IoT a candidate to assess when those functions and Microsoft workflow integration are priorities.

Passive monitoring and protocol depth

Ask which industrial protocols and device families the platform decodes, how it obtains traffic, and whether it requires active probing. Passive monitoring can be a better operational fit where active scans are restricted, but “passive” alone does not establish how much useful device and communications detail a sensor will produce. Validate decoding against traffic from your plants, substations, or remote sites.

Include network constraints in the test: bandwidth, sensor placement, segmented networks, and any air-gapped zones. Ask how monitoring works where a site cannot maintain a cloud connection, and what data must move between a sensor and a central service. Dragos says its platform collects network data across “600+ ICS protocols.” This is a vendor-reported product claim, not an independent measure of detection quality or of coverage in your environment; verify the protocols and device types you need.

Vulnerability context and prioritization

Compare whether the platform connects device inventory with vulnerability information, including CVE and CVSS details, firmware matching, remediation recommendations, and compensating controls. Ask how it accounts for operational impact, safety, exploitability, and the protections already in place. A list of vulnerabilities is not the same as a prioritized plan that an OT owner can act on.

Microsoft documents CVE details, CVSS scores, device inventory views, workbooks, and remediation recommendations for Defender for IoT. Dragos describes vulnerability prioritization as part of its OT-focused platform. In either case, ask the vendor to show how it reaches a recommendation for a representative asset and what evidence or assumptions support that recommendation.

Threat detection and industrial intelligence

Request demonstrations of detections relevant to your threat model: abnormal OT behavior, known industrial malware, credential misuse, lateral movement, and activity by adversaries targeting physical operations. Ask what the alert says, which evidence supports it, how it is prioritized, and how an analyst can investigate without disrupting the process.

Dragos describes OT-specific threat detection enriched by industrial threat intelligence. The important comparison is how that intelligence changes detection or investigation for your environment, rather than the existence of an intelligence feed by itself. Have the vendor walk through a representative alert from observation to decision and show how an operator can distinguish a meaningful incident from activity that requires context.

Response workflow

Compare alert triage, case management, playbooks, escalation, and integration with your SOC. A platform should fit the people and tools that own the response: ask who receives an alert, where evidence is recorded, how OT and IT teams coordinate, and what actions require operational approval. Validate any playbook against your procedures rather than assuming that a documented workflow can be adopted unchanged.

Dragos documents response playbooks and case-management workflows. Microsoft documents integration into Defender inventory and exposure workflows. These are examples of different workflow strengths to test; they do not establish that either platform will fit your organization’s escalation path without configuration.

Deployment and resilience

Decide whether your sites can use a cloud-connected deployment, need fully on-premises operation, or require a hybrid arrangement. Microsoft lists cloud-connected, fully on-premises, and hybrid options for Defender for IoT. For each shortlisted platform, map sensors and management components to sites, bandwidth, network segmentation, and remote access conditions. If any zone is air-gapped, ask specifically what works locally and what functionality depends on connectivity.

Deployment is also an operational question. Establish who owns sensor installation, network changes, upgrades, and support, and how those tasks will be scheduled around production. Do not assume that an agentless product requires no implementation effort: it still needs suitable traffic visibility, sensor placement, network coordination, and people to review and act on findings.

Integration and operating model

List the systems that must exchange information with the platform: SIEM and SOAR tools, identity services, firewalls, network access control (NAC), vulnerability management, and ticketing. Ask which integrations are available, what data is exchanged, whether it is one-way or bidirectional, and what additional configuration or licensing is required.

Microsoft documents OT connectors that can ingest Armis, Dragos, and Forescout asset and vulnerability data into Security Exposure Management. Treat that as a specific integration path to validate, not proof that every needed data source or workflow is covered. Include the tools your team actually uses in the proof of value.

How do the main platform categories differ?

A 2026 comparison groups representative options into three practical lanes. The categories are useful for building a shortlist, but they are not mutually exclusive: capability overlap means the exact product, deployment, and workflow still need to be tested.

Platform lane Representative vendors Why buyers consider it What to validate
OT-native specialists Claroty, Nozomi Networks, Dragos OT-specific discovery, protocol-aware monitoring, and industrial security workflows Coverage of your device families and protocols; distributed-site operation; response and prioritization fit
Broad XIoT or asset-intelligence platforms Armis, Forescout Managing IT, OT, IoT, and IoMT in a broader asset-estate model How well the platform represents OT context and supports your plant-specific workflows
IT-security extensions Microsoft Defender for IoT, Tenable OT Security, Palo Alto Networks Industrial OT Security Connecting OT visibility or exposure management with an existing enterprise security stack OT protocol and inventory depth, deployment constraints, and the integrations your team needs

Use these lanes to decide whom to invite, not to declare a winner. The practical fit depends on whether your main need is OT-native visibility and intelligence, a common asset model across several device classes, or closer alignment with an existing security stack.

Which vendors belong on an initial shortlist?

Use the stated fits below to identify candidates, then test each against the same requirements and site conditions. These are starting points, not independent performance rankings.

Tenable OT Security and Palo Alto Networks Industrial OT Security Buyers seeking OT exposure management or network-security controls aligned with an existing enterprise security stack Exposure prioritization, available controls, integrations, and operational fit

For Dragos, the vendor’s 2026 product page reports “600+ ICS protocols,” “Only 3-6% of OT vulnerabilities require immediate action,” research on “26+ OT adversary groups,” and training on “5+ petabytes of OT telemetry and adversary research.” These are vendor-reported claims, not independent cross-vendor benchmarks. In particular, treat the vulnerability percentage as the vendor’s characterization, not a universal rule for your own risk decisions. Ask what each claim means for your sites and the scope of the product being quoted.

How should you run a proof of value without disrupting production?

A proof of value should show whether the platform answers your operational questions using representative traffic, without introducing unacceptable production risk. Agree on scope, success criteria, traffic access, and change controls before sensors are deployed.

  1. Choose representative locations and assets. Include the site types, network zones, device families, and protocols that drive your requirements. If remote or segmented sites matter, include them in the evaluation scope rather than extrapolating from a central facility.
  2. Set the boundaries with operations. Agree with OT owners on permitted data collection, sensor placement, network changes, access, maintenance windows, and prohibited actions. Confirm whether the evaluation depends on cloud connectivity or must work locally.
  3. Define measurable outcomes. Specify which devices should be identified, what inventory attributes matter, which protocols must be decoded, what alerts should be reviewed, and which integrations must be demonstrated. Record what counts as a correct identification or useful alert before comparing vendors.
  4. Observe discovery and monitoring. Compare results with the site’s available asset records and knowledgeable operators. Review unidentified or partially identified devices, communications visibility, and any active probing or other traffic-generation behavior.
  5. Test prioritization and response. Use representative findings to see how the platform explains risk, recommends action, routes alerts, records cases, and fits the organization’s approval and escalation paths.
  6. Document operational effort. Track sensor and network requirements, vendor and internal work, integration configuration, analyst review, and engineering involvement. Use the same scope and assumptions for each vendor.
  7. Review results with both security and operations. Decide whether the demonstrated visibility and workflows justify deployment, what gaps remain, and what changes or staffing would be needed to address them.

There is no independent apples-to-apples performance benchmark or public cross-vendor price sheet established in the available material. A scoped proof of value and a quote based on your actual sites, assets, protocols, and integrations are therefore more meaningful than a generic ranking.

How should you compare total cost of ownership?

Compare the complete three-year operating picture, not only the subscription line. A current buyer guide identifies these key cost drivers, but public cross-vendor pricing is not established.

  • Subscription unit: determine whether pricing is based on assets, devices, sites, sensors, or throughput, and clarify how each unit is counted as inventory changes.
  • Infrastructure: include sensors and any network, storage, or connectivity requirements associated with the proposed deployment.
  • Implementation: account for installation, integration, professional services, and support, along with the responsibilities assigned to your own staff.
  • Ongoing operations: estimate internal analyst and engineering time for reviewing alerts, maintaining inventory, coordinating changes, and handling response workflows.
  • Scope assumptions: ask vendors to price the same sites, asset counts, deployment model, integrations, and support expectations so the offers can be compared fairly.

Ask for a quote that makes its assumptions explicit. If one proposal counts sensors while another counts assets or sites, the headline totals do not describe equivalent coverage. Include expansion, remote-site connectivity, and the staffing required to use the platform in the cost discussion.

What are the most common buying mistakes?

Most avoidable problems come from comparing unlike scopes or treating a product claim as evidence of fit. Keep the evaluation grounded in the equipment, workflows, and operating boundaries that the platform will actually encounter.

  • Choosing by category alone: an OT-native specialist, broad asset-intelligence platform, or enterprise-stack extension is only a starting point. Validate the exact capabilities and workflows needed.
  • Using protocol counts as a proxy for coverage: a vendor-reported protocol total does not tell you whether your specific devices and communications are decoded usefully. Test those protocols directly.
  • Assuming inventory equals risk prioritization: device identification, vulnerability matching, operational context, and actionable remediation are distinct tasks. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the full chain.
  • Ignoring deployment constraints until late: cloud connectivity, on-premises requirements, air gaps, bandwidth, and sensor placement can change both feasibility and cost. Put them in the shortlist criteria.
  • Comparing quotes with different assumptions: units, sites, sensors, services, and staffing differ across proposals. Normalize the scope before treating prices as comparable.
  • Running a proof of value without operational owners: security results alone do not establish whether data collection, escalation, and recommended actions fit plant responsibilities. Include OT operations in the evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an OT cybersecurity platform replace a firewall or NAC system?

The platforms covered here are described in terms of visibility, exposure management, detection, and response workflows; the available product descriptions do not establish that they replace firewalls or NAC. Treat those as separate control functions and verify any specific control capability and integration in the proposed product.

Should we buy one platform for every plant and remote site?

A single platform may be a goal, but the comparison should include representative site types, remote locations, network segmentation, and any air-gapped areas. The available evidence does not establish that every product has identical coverage or deployment behavior across all environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are vendor-reported protocol and threat-intelligence numbers independently verified?

The cited Dragos figures are claims on its 2026 product page, not independent cross-vendor measurements. Use them to frame questions for the vendor, then test your required protocols and workflows directly.

How can we tell whether an OT vulnerability recommendation is safe to act on?

Ask the vendor to show the evidence behind the recommendation, including asset and firmware matching, operational impact, safety considerations, exploitability, and compensating controls. Have the relevant OT owner assess proposed actions within the organization’s change and approval process.
