Trying and watching answer different questions. A playable build tells you how a game feels; a broadcast tells you what publishers want you to notice. Treating a trailer event as a demo event is the fastest way to plan the wrong trip.

What do you actually get at an in-person game showcase?
A convention floor trades breadth and comfort for hardware access and immediacy. You can touch a new controller, play a console version that is not in a public demo program, compare displays, and ask a developer why a system works the way it does. The trade-offs are travel, queues, noise and sessions that may last only 10 to 20 minutes.
Gamescom 2026 in Cologne
Gamescom’s Opening Night Live was scheduled for 25 August 2026, followed by the public and trade show from 26–30 August at Koelnmesse. The event combines public entertainment halls with trade-only business areas, so a public badge does not give access to every meeting or presentation.
Scale matters when deciding whether the trip is worthwhile. A post-show Gamescom recap from G2A News, citing Gamescom, reported 368,000 visitors from 131 countries and 1,743 exhibiting companies in 2026. Gamemeca’s opening-day report counted more than 1,600 companies from 67 countries, 233,000 square metres of exhibition space sold out for the first time, 47 national pavilions from 40 countries, and an indie area exceeding 420 companies, up 16 percent. The different company totals reflect the timing and counting method of each report. For comparison, shattered.io reported 357,000 in-person attendees from 128 countries at Gamescom 2025.
The floor is where the convention earns its reputation. Xbox Hall 7 listed gameplay demos for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Gears of War: E-Day, Minecraft Dungeons 2, Fable and Metro 2039. Nintendo Hall 9 offered Nintendo Switch 2 demonstrations, including a new Call of Duty running on the system, Metaphor: ReFantazio and 007 First Light. Pearl Abyss showed Crimson Desert gameplay in the Samsung booth. In Indie United, Hall 10.2, the playable lineup included Ravenwood Academy: A Wizard101 Story, the upcoming console version of Fiesta Online and Gloria Victis. Capcom’s footprint was reported at about 950 square metres with roughly 60 demo stations.
Gamescom can pair a reveal with an immediate physical experience; The Game Awards cannot. The limitation is that the same popularity creates queues and abbreviated sessions. Valve’s Next Fest marketing, as described by ComputerBase, uses those long waits and hurried hall try-outs as the reason to test games at home instead.
PAX West 2026 in Seattle
PAX West ran 4–7 September 2026 at the Seattle Convention Center over Labor Day weekend. ReedPop and Penny Arcade listed more than 300 exhibitors spanning games, tabletop and hardware, with companies such as SEGA, Larian Studios, Double Fine, Konami, Bandai Namco, Atari, Sandisk, AMD and Corsair. Its press material specifically promoted demos from local developers including Innersloth, Batterystaple Games and Snowfall Games.
PAX is the main North American consumer-floor alternative to Cologne for readers who want to try games in person. ReedPop and Penny Arcade published these 2026 badge prices: a four-day badge cost $264.60; Saturday was $88.20; Friday or Sunday was $81.90; Monday was $59.85; a Kids four-day badge was $53; and a BYOC badge was $56.70. Those prices are for the badge only, checked October 2026, before transport, lodging and food.

Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026
Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show took place 29 October–1 November 2026. It is especially useful for readers in Asia-Pacific who cannot reasonably reach Cologne or Seattle. GameSpot described the event as a regional announcement and debut venue. Medcom.id reported that Ubisoft’s D1–D2 booth let visitors try unreleased Rayman Legends Retold, Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced; Just Dance appeared at booth J2, and a “Play with the Developers” session was scheduled for Rayman.
Can you play games at Summer Game Fest or The Game Awards?
Usually not as a member of the general online audience. Summer Game Fest is a streaming-first event with a smaller press preview, not a public E3-scale playable floor. The Game Awards is a single awards ceremony with announcements and limited theatre attendance; most fans should stream it.
“Viewed from within the industry, though, Summer Game Fest is almost a non-event – because it is, in the literal sense, not much of an event. There is scant reason to travel to L.A. for it, especially for those outside the media. It is mostly virtual and transactional — a giant advertising billboard, and not much more.”
That assessment is about traveling specifically for hands-on access, not about the value of watching the show. Summer Game Fest can reveal a game you later play at a convention or during Next Fest. The Game Awards, scheduled for 10 December 2026 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, is excellent for a concentrated evening of awards and major announcements, but hands-on play is not its main public experience.

IGN Live, held 6–7 June 2026 at the Magic Box @ The Reef in downtown Los Angeles, was a hybrid in-person and streamed entertainment event. Available event information does not establish a public playable-demo expo hall there, so do not buy a ticket expecting a guaranteed convention-style demo floor.

TechRadar described the Gamescom Future Games Show package as three digital shows with more than 40 games and 13 world premieres, streamed on Twitch, YouTube, X, TikTok, Facebook and GamesRadar+. The 30 August “Best Of Gamescom” edition included gameplay demonstrations, booth tours and developer interviews. It lets you see the floor remotely; it does not let you play the builds.
How does Steam Next Fest work?
Steam Next Fest is the major recurring online event designed for playing unreleased PC games. Every participating game must have a playable Steam demo, must not have launched yet, and may appear in Next Fest only once. Developers can stream from a game’s livestream tab, but there is no large official stage show; the demos are the main event.

When is it held?
Valve runs Next Fest three times a year, typically in February, June and October. The October 2026 edition ran 19–26 October, ending at 18:00 on 26 October according to ComputerBase. The next listed editions are 22 February–1 March 2027 and 14–21 June 2027. Dates and closing times can change, so check the live Steam event page at Steam Next Fest before planning a binge.
How to use a Next Fest week efficiently
- Open the hub and sign in. A Steam account is enough; there is no event ticket.
- Start with your discovery list. ComputerBase reports that Valve builds a personalized list from your Steam history, which is faster than scanning every category.
- Filter by the kind of game you can actually play. Next Fest is strongest in indie action RPGs, builders, shooters, co-op games and niche simulations. Large AAA publishers generally do not use it.
- Install selectively. A demo is free, but every download consumes drive space. Wishlist games that hold your attention instead of keeping every installer.
- Use developer streams for context. A livestream can explain controls, roadmap decisions or accessibility details that a store page omits.
- Record your own decision after a session. Note whether the controls, performance, pacing and first-hour loop work for you; a trailer cannot answer those questions.
- Check the post-event list. Valve publishes a most-played recap at the Next Fest most-played page, useful for finding games you missed.
How much choice is too much?
October 2026 illustrates Next Fest’s strength and weakness. GameSpot counted around 7,100 demos, while Output Lag recorded 7,131 at the start and a snapshot of 110,461 people playing demos on opening day. GameSpot said the count had almost doubled from June; Polygon, citing Eurogamer, reported more than twice as many demos as the previous year.
That volume is not automatically quality. GameSpot’s Darryn Bonthuys wrote: “What was once a fun week-long festival of early game demos has become a dumping ground for vibe-coded AI slop, making it increasingly hard to find and wishlist good games.” Polygon also described a flood of AI-generated demos and reported that some human teams cancelled demos because of fears about copycats. Use critic roundups, Valve’s most-played list and developer information to reduce the noise rather than treating every listing as equally promising.
Giovanni Colantonio of Polygon still called the event “a great way to find exciting and eccentric new PC games from a wide range of developers.” The two views can both be true: the catalog has exceptional variety, but discovery now requires more filtering than in smaller editions.
Which format is best for your situation?
Choose an in-person floor when hardware or AAA access matters
- You need to feel a controller, headset, display or a new system such as Nintendo Switch 2.
- You care about console and AAA games that are unlikely to appear in Next Fest.
- You want to ask a developer a question or join a session such as Gamescom’s indie-floor conversations or the “Play with the Developers” program in Bangkok.
- You can absorb travel, queues, noise and a short appointment-style session.
- You live within practical reach of Cologne, Seattle or Bangkok during the event dates.
Gamescom is the strongest choice for the largest concentration of near-release code. PAX West is the more practical North American option. Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show is the sensible regional choice for much of APAC.

Choose Steam Next Fest when time and volume matter
- You play on PC or Steam Deck.
- You want hours with a build rather than a ten-minute queue slot.
- You are hunting indies, co-op party games or unusual simulations.
- You cannot or will not fly to a convention.
- You are willing to use discovery lists, roundups and the most-played recap to cut through roughly 7,100 entries.
Steam Next Fest is also the only option here with no admission charge. The practical limit is storage, download time and the effort required to separate excellent demos from low-effort submissions.
Choose a watch-online showcase when you need a map
- You want release windows, world premieres, awards or platform announcements.
- You are following a publisher or platform that is not running a public Gamescom booth.
- You plan to turn a trailer into a later demo download, convention appointment or wishlist decision.
Watching is a research step for your personal game calendar, not a substitute for trying. A staged gameplay segment can show a feature without revealing how the controls, difficulty curve or performance feel.
