To get more replay value from a choice-driven immersive sim, treat your first playthrough as a role you commit to, then make later runs meaningfully different: change your approach, your abilities, or the way you shape the world. These games reward experimenting with their systems more than collecting everything on one save. You usually cannot see every branch at once—and that is part of the design, not a failure to complete the game.

What makes an immersive sim worth replaying?

An immersive sim gives you goals and a set of tools, then lets interacting systems support different solutions. A locked door might be a hacking problem, a stealth route, a combat obstacle, or an invitation to look for another way through. Your actions can also change how characters and locations respond later.

That is different from a game where the only meaningful choice is a dialogue menu, or an open-world game whose many activities all rely on the same basic action. Immersive sims tend to concentrate their systems in relatively contained spaces. As developer Maxim Samoylenko put it in 80 Level on 27 May 2018, they can be “an inch wide and a mile deep.” The replay comes from discovering new ways to use the space and tools, not necessarily from entering a bigger map.

Mark Brown of Game Maker’s Toolkit described the appeal in The Comeback of the Immersive Sim (18 August 2016): “Simulations allow players to explore not just a space but a ‘possibility space’.” He continued: “They can make their own fun, tell their own stories, solve problems the way they want, and see the consequences of their choices. That’s the thing that games can do that no other medium in human history has been able to do”.

In practical terms, replay value usually lives on three axes: how you approach problems, which abilities and tools you bring, and what consequences you accept. A second run that changes only your outfit or weapon appearance may feel familiar; a run that changes how you solve a challenge can make the same level feel new.

Can I see all the content in one run?

Usually not. A consequential choice may close off another character’s fate, faction path, or story branch. That lockout makes a decision matter and gives a later playthrough a reason to exist.

Multiple endings are one way to make choices count without branching every mission into a wholly separate campaign. In a 2016 Game Developer discussion, Greg Johnson noted that a conclusion can carry the impact of earlier decisions even when the main story does not keep splitting into new paths. In Deus Ex, for example, small decisions may change a character’s fate, later remarks, or access to something without rewriting the whole story.

Not every fork is announced with a dramatic dialogue choice. In Deus Ex, earlier encounters can affect how people respond when you meet them again; some seemingly minor actions bring later consequences or comments. That means a completion checklist can be useful for tracking what you found, but it cannot turn mutually exclusive outcomes into one all-seeing save file.

Think of an incomplete branch as a contract for a future run. Pick a different allegiance or response when you replay, rather than trying to undo every consequence immediately. You will experience fewer alternatives in the moment, but each outcome is more legible as the result of the role you chose.

Should I resist save scumming?

For at least one run, it is worth letting a decision stand. Reloading after every outcome is a legitimate way to explore a game, but it can remove the tension and emotional weight that the decision was designed to create.

Save scumming is not a modern quirk or a sign that someone is playing incorrectly. Deus Ex designer Warren Spector described watching players save at an obvious choice, try one option, then return to the save and try another. Brendan Caldwell wrote in Rock Paper Shotgun on 25 July 2024 that “There is a certain player behaviour that all good immersive sims unwittingly encourage: the act of save scumming.” These games invite experimentation, and a quicksave can be a useful lab bench.

A balanced approach is to separate a committed story run from a systems-learning run:

  • On your first story run: accept a surprise, a failed conversation, or an imperfect outcome. Read letters and quest text, and talk to people who may hint at alternate solutions. Choose as a pragmatist, idealist, rebel, or another role, and follow that logic rather than reloading to optimize every exchange.
  • When learning a mission: save before a risky experiment if you want to discover how a power, security system, or enemy response works. Then try the challenge again without relying on the reload, if that is the kind of play you want.
  • On a later run: use saves to explore an alternate branch or test a new contract. You already have the committed version; this time the point can be comparison and discovery.

Harvey Smith, speaking at a PC Gamer designers roundtable on 8 May 2017, put the intent plainly: “the whole point of the Dishonored games and the Deus Ex games was there’s no right way to play, you can do this your own way”. A ghost or Clean Hands checkbox can still be a satisfying personal challenge, but it need not be the grade for your first run.

Some games build the reset into their structure. Caldwell described Deathloop this way: “No save scumming here, friend. The game will reset things for you.” In Prey: Mooncrash, the roguelike mode also makes accumulated knowledge central to the experience. These are useful choices if you enjoy adapting after failure more than preserving a single perfect timeline.

Which parts of a run should I change?

Change one major axis at a time if you want to understand what made the second run different. A complete reversal across every choice can be fun, but it can also make it hard to tell whether the new experience came from your tactics, build, or story decisions.

Axis 1: Change your verbs

Pick a different way to interact with the same kinds of problems. You might ghost through a level without being detected, use lethal stealth, confront enemies openly, or lean on persuasion and bribery. Social encounters can be as much a route as a vent or a locked door: in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a conversation with a social boss can bypass sections of gameplay or create a harder outcome, as Black Shell Media noted in 2016.

Dishonored makes this contrast easy to feel. A stealth-minded run might sneak past a guard, possess a rat to pass through a vent, or use Domino to connect enemies’ fates. Another run can rely on gadgets, guns, swords, or whale-oil cans. The level is the same, but the route, risks, and consequences change. Treat “never detected” and “never kill” as optional contracts for later, not requirements for a valid first playthrough.

Axis 2: Change your tools and build

Choose abilities that make you solve problems differently, not merely hit harder. In Prey (2017), one useful contrast is a human-skills-only run followed by a run that takes Typhon abilities. The official Steam description captures the premise as “Play Your Way Gain alien abilities to develop a distinct combination of powers and upgrade your unique skills.”

The tools invite improvisation. Gloo can create a route up a wall or help control a crowd. The Huntress boltcaster can trigger a button through glass or interact with objects. Mimic powers can turn you into something as inconspicuous as a coffee mug to slip through a security booth. These are not merely alternate damage types; they change what counts as a path or a solution.

In Dishonored, refusing the Outsider’s powers creates a distinct no-powers contract, while Deus Ex can be replayed around combat augmentations or a more stealth-, hacking-, and conversation-focused toolkit. In Thief 1 and Thief 2, by contrast, Garrett has nearly the same core capabilities at the start and end. Their replay comes more from routes, light, and sound than from build progression.

Axis 3: Change your ethics and the world state

Ask what your character is willing to do and whom they are willing to save. In Dishonored, the chaos system responds to violence by changing guard behavior and influencing the story’s tone and endings. It gives a lethal run and a low-chaos run different textures, rather than treating killing as a purely local combat choice. Dishonored: Death of the Outsider removed the chaos system; optional quests instead encourage alternate approaches.

Deus Ex endings are better understood as competing ideas about how the world should continue than as a simple good-versus-evil score. Earlier social decisions and whom you save are smaller expressions of that same axis. Replaying with a coherent stance makes those decisions feel connected instead of like isolated opportunities to optimize.

Which games offer the clearest replay contracts?

The easiest games to replay are often the ones that make a different run understandable before you start. Some offer clear challenges such as ghosting or no-kill play; others reward you with new routes, powers, or a reset loop.

Game What changes on a replay Strong contract for a second run
Deus Ex (2000) Combat, stealth, and diplomacy approaches; revisited hub areas; NPC reactions; philosophical endings. Go from a forceful route to a stealth-and-talk run, or make different ending choices.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Different tools for objectives, social-boss conversations, and approaches to missions. Switch between social/stealth solutions and combat, while planning for boss encounters.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Dense Prague hub, side content, and branching routes that can lock out other content. Explore side paths and change your approach; do not expect a different finale.
Dishonored and Dishonored 2 Chaos, lethal versus non-lethal play, stealth, powers, and— in the second game—Corvo or Emily. Try a low-chaos ghost run, a high-chaos run, or a no-powers run.
Prey (2017) Human or Typhon abilities, improvised tools, and the ways you navigate Talos I. Use human skills first, then build around Typhon powers; consider Mooncrash for a designed loop.
Deathloop Knowledge across a reset loop and four locations that change by time of day. Use what you learned to refine a route through the loop; it is not a nonlethal campaign.
System Shock (2023 remake) Progression and tool choices in an assault-focused immersive sim. Revisit the station with different progression priorities rather than expecting a wholly different map.
Thief 1 and Thief 2 Routes through levels, and how you manage light and sound. Replay a mission while changing your route and stealth decisions.

Prey here means Arkane’s 2017 game, not the 2006 game with the same title. Steam lists its release date as 4 May 2017 and calls its player reviews Very Positive; those reviews are a snapshot, not a measure of how often owners replay it. A Steam bundle pairs it with Dishonored 2, and Prey: Digital Deluxe includes Prey, Mooncrash, and Typhon Hunter. Bundle contents and store availability can vary by region and change over time.

What makes each of these games replayable?

Deus Ex (2000): revisit the same problems with a new plan

The original Deus Ex is a strong choice if you want stealth, combat, and diplomacy to feel like distinct ways through a mission. Liberty Island is a compact example: a player might search underwater or in a sunken boat, attack directly, or find a more careful route through the building. Later, Hell’s Kitchen returns with areas that can open or close, making a hub feel responsive rather than disposable.

The game also connects earlier actions to later NPC interactions and offers philosophical endings. Those differences do not mean every small task rewrites the plot; they mean a run can vary through a combination of local consequences, revisits, and major choices. Charles Burgar wrote in TheGamer on 14 February 2020 that the game is “highly replayable, almost requiring you to play the game multiple times to see everything.”

Human Revolution and Mankind Divided: vary approach, not just allegiance

Human Revolution is a useful entry point for comparing stealth, combat, and social solutions. A task might be handled by talking to a bartender or breaking into an office. However, the original game’s boss fights could punish a stealth-focused or passive build that arrived without enough firepower. “Every approach is valid” describes the genre’s aspiration, not a guarantee that every encounter supports every build equally well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mankind Divided follows with a denser Prague hub and routes that can exclude other content when you commit to a path. Its replay strength is exploration and approach variance more than ending variety: CBR reported that “Every player will experience the same ending, no matter what.” If you want branching side content and a more involved hub, that can still be worthwhile; if you replay mainly for a new finale, it is a less promising contract.

Dishonored and Dishonored 2: use the scorecards without letting them grade you

Chaos, Ghost, and Clean Hands make the series especially easy to turn into self-imposed challenges. Low chaos and high chaos encourage different habits; stealth, lethal action, non-lethal options, and no powers all change how a mission is solved. In Dishonored 2, choosing Corvo or Emily adds another toolset contrast. The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in the Slab are standout replay targets because their spaces invite different ways of moving through them.

Those visible scorecards can create pressure to reload until a mission is perfect. Resist that pressure on run one if it is making you play for a checkbox rather than for the situation. A later ghost or Clean Hands attempt gives the constraint a purpose and lets you learn the level first.

Prey (2017): make the station itself a toolkit

Prey turns its interior and exterior spaces into problems with more than one key. A door can be approached through a power, a route made with Gloo, an object used to trigger a control through glass, or another path discovered in the environment. The Gloo tool is not only a weapon or restraint; it can create routes up surfaces. That use is easy to miss if you expect the game to explain every traversal possibility directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A human-skills run followed by a Typhon-focused one changes what you notice and what you can do. Mooncrash is the more explicitly designed replay mode: it uses a roguelike structure where knowledge becomes valuable across attempts. The main campaign also permits surprising outcomes; for example, an escape pod can end the story early if you have its key. That is a consequence the game allows, not necessarily the ending most players will want on their first run.

Deathloop: let the loop replace the reload

Deathloop makes repetition part of its premise. Its four locations change by time of day, and what you learn helps shape the next pass. It is a good fit if you want an explicit knowledge loop rather than classic missions with quicksaves. There is an important limit: it does not support a nonlethal campaign, so choose it for varied ways to eliminate targets, not for a pacifist contract.

System Shock and Thief: distinguish build replay from route replay

The 2023 System Shock remake is an assault-focused option: as Samoylenko’s genre framework suggests, games in this branch can place more of their variety in progression and tools than in alternate geometry. Thief 1 and Thief 2 represent the opposite emphasis. Their core character abilities change little, so revisiting a level is about routes, shadows, and sound rather than making a new build.

Why can replaying one mission feel like new content?

Immersive sims often build open buildings rather than vast open worlds. A focused level can offer several paths from A to B, while its guards, security systems, and sightlines make each path a different problem.

Changing your movement changes what you notice. In Dishonored, a route through a level might involve a crow, mosquito, or rodent. In a stealth-heavy map, the geometry may offer several ways around a guard. In a more assault-oriented space, the corridor may be fixed, but different loadouts can still change how you handle it. Black Shell Media’s description of AI awareness stages and security systems helps explain why returning to the same map does not automatically mean repeating the same situation.

That is why a replay contract should change the intersection of a tool and a challenge, not just the character’s cosmetics. Developer David Pittman told Game Developer on 24 January 2018 that “a broad player toolset is not interesting per se; the exciting stuff happens at the intersection of the player’s available tools and a particular challenge.”

How do I choose a second-run challenge?

Start with the part of your first run that felt most constrained or most rewarding. Then choose one rule that makes you approach it differently, while leaving enough flexibility to enjoy the game.

  1. After a stealth-first run: try loud combat, lethal stealth, or a social route. In Dishonored, a high-chaos run can contrast with a low-chaos one; in Deus Ex, lean on conversations and diplomacy instead of treating every obstacle as a combat encounter.
  2. After using every upgrade: limit your build. Refuse powers in Dishonored, or play Prey with human skills before taking Typhon abilities on a later run.
  3. After optimizing for the ending: adopt a role instead. Decide what your character believes about the future in Deus Ex, or whom they will protect, and make smaller decisions consistently with that stance.
  4. After playing cautiously: try a timed or route-focused community contract, such as a speedrun, pistol-only run, Gloo-only run, or maximum-chaos run. These are player-created challenges, not official measures of completion.
  5. If you want a different kind of replay: look for a game’s built-in loop or community options. Deathloop and Mooncrash structure repetition around learning; Deus Ex Revision is one community option How-To Geek has noted for approaching the 2000 game as a modern player.

How to pick a game for the kind of replay you want

  • For more story and ending divergence: consider the philosophical endings of Deus Ex or the chaos-shaped outcomes in Dishonored.
  • For more build and tool experimentation: consider Prey, Dishonored, or Deus Ex.
  • For an explicit repeat-and-learn structure: choose Deathloop or Prey: Mooncrash.
  • For route mastery without a changing build: choose Thief 1 or Thief 2.
  • For a hub you can revisit and explore: consider Deus Ex or the Prague hub in Mankind Divided.

How were these replay recommendations selected?

The examples are organized by what actually changes between runs: approach verbs, build and tool choices, world state, ending divergence, hub reactivity, and whether the game itself resets or leaves the replay contract to you. They also distinguish a designed-in loop from a classic mission structure, and avoid treating a visible challenge score as the only valid way to play.

There is no established figure here for the average number of immersive-sim playthroughs per owner or the share of players who finish a ghost or no-kill run. A Steam review rating, sales figure, or the existence of multiple endings cannot answer those questions. The useful measure for an individual player is whether a new contract changes the decisions and systems they engage with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are immersive sims less common than straightforward action games?

Learning how interacting systems work can demand more effort than following a simpler action-game loop, which may make these games harder to sell. Harvey Smith has also described 2010s sales as disappointing while arguing that there can be a market when development costs are balanced.

What percentage of players finish a no-kill or never-detected run?

No reliable completion share is established here. A game’s positive review percentage or total sales should not be mistaken for the percentage of players who complete a specific challenge.

Does replay value depend on getting a different ending?

No. A replay can come from new routes, tools, or reactions in the same spaces even when the finale stays fixed. The difference is whether you want story divergence or systems mastery most.
