If you want another game like Prey, start with the System Shock remake for a hostile sci-fi station, exploration, environmental clues, and survival pressure. If you want more of Dishonored’s powers and carefully made spaces, choose Deathloop. Other strong matches include Deus Ex for role-playing freedom, Weird West for a reactive top-down sandbox, and Gloomwood for stealth horror. Hitman is a close fit for experimental assassination, though it is an adjacent recommendation rather than a direct replacement.

“Immersive sim” is a debated label, so the useful question is not whether every game fits a strict genre boundary. It is which part of the experience you want to keep: flexible problem-solving, environmental interaction, stealth, powers, role-playing, or worlds that respond to your choices. The guide below sorts the games by those priorities instead of pretending there is one objective ranking.

Which game should I play after Prey?

Choose the System Shock remake if Prey’s isolated space station, clues tucked into the environment, and improvisational survival were the main draw. It is the closest match here for that combination, though its horror and retro structure make it a different-feeling experience from Arkane’s smoother modern presentation.

System Shock remake: the closest sci-fi successor

Nightdive Studios describes the game as “the fully fledged remake of the ground breaking original from 1994.” The remake updates visuals, controls, interface, sounds, and music, while PLAION’s publisher materials identify Nightdive as its developer. Those updates make the original easier to approach, but they do not turn it into a modern clone of Prey. Its identity remains rooted in the older immersive-sim tradition and in a more overtly survival-horror structure.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The strongest overlap is the setting logic. You explore a hostile station, find audio and text logs, read the environment for clues, and decide how to spend limited resources while the threat level stays high. Progress comes from paying attention and improvising rather than simply following a perfectly marked route. That makes it a good follow-up for someone who enjoyed discovering that a seemingly ordinary object, room, or piece of information could change the safest plan.

Set expectations before starting. The remake is more retro-structured and more explicitly horror-focused than Prey. Its presentation and interface have been updated, but the design still asks you to accept a classic form of exploration and pressure. Pick it for isolation, investigation, environmental storytelling, and resource-conscious problem-solving. If the part of Prey you miss most is supernatural-style movement and a broad set of modern powers, Deathloop is likely the better first choice.

Best for: sci-fi, station exploration, environmental clues, audio and text logs, horror pressure, and classic systems-driven design.

What should I play after Dishonored?

There are three different answers depending on what you mean by “like Dishonored.” Choose Deathloop for Arkane’s first-person movement, abilities, stealth-action flexibility, and authored spaces. Choose Gloomwood when you want stealth, darkness, sound, and a much harsher horror mood. Choose Hitman when the most important feature is replayable assassination planning through disguises, social cues, and unusual setups.

Deathloop: powers, movement, and replayable routes

PlayStation describes Deathloop as a story-driven first-person action shooter set in a time loop and created by Arkane Lyon. It emphasizes multiple pathways and emergent gameplay, which makes it a strong bridge from Dishonored if you value carefully designed spaces and freedom to approach them in different ways. Steam also tags it as an immersive sim alongside stealth, first-person shooter, single-player, and time manipulation.

The time-loop structure changes the rhythm considerably. Revisiting locations is central to progression, so learning a space and refining a route are part of the intended experience. A first attempt may be about gathering information; a later attempt can be about testing a different ability, infiltration path, or action sequence. That repeated structure makes the game feel more puzzle-like and replay-oriented than a straightforward march through new levels.

It is therefore not simply “Dishonored with a new story.” The loop, the repeated spaces, and the emphasis on planning give it its own identity. Choose it for Arkane’s modern presentation, first-person movement, powers, stealth-action options, and authored routes. Do not choose it expecting Prey’s station-scale investigation or a continuous RPG world.

Best for: powers, mobility, stealth-action, emergent routes, authored levels, time manipulation, and replayable planning.

Gloomwood: stealth with horror pressure

Gloomwood suits players who want darkness, sound, hostile spaces, and a less forgiving stealth-horror mood. Steam currently classifies it as an Early Access immersive sim, stealth, survival-horror, and first-person game. Its developer has not stated an estimated completion date, so that status is an important part of the decision as of October 30, 2026.

The appeal is specialization. Where Dishonored often makes experimentation feel generous and empowering, Gloomwood is aimed at tension: you listen, watch the space, and weigh the danger of being noticed. Its retro presentation reinforces that mood. It is a better match for “make stealth darker and tenser” than for “give me a finished, accessible campaign with the same polish and feel as Dishonored.”

Early Access also changes the practical expectation. You are choosing a game that is still in development rather than a fixed, complete campaign with a stated endpoint. That is not a minor footnote for this recommendation; it is one of the main differences between Gloomwood and the finished releases elsewhere on this list.

Hitman: social assassination as a sandbox

Hitman is an adjacent recommendation for players who enjoy experimenting with targets, routes, and setups. The Washington Post describes its distinctive approach through social cues and disguises that let players infiltrate locations. The pleasure comes from studying a mission space, noticing how people and routines fit together, and trying a new plan on a later run.

The overlap with Dishonored is strongest in replayable assassination spaces, systemic targets, experimentation, and the discovery of a new route or setup. You can approach a target through social infiltration and disguises rather than relying only on direct combat or conventional stealth. The mission becomes a sandbox for testing possibilities.

The difference is the fantasy and structure. Hitman is a mission-based social-assassination sandbox, not a continuous role-playing world centered on supernatural traversal. Its spaces are designed for repeated target-focused experiments, whereas Dishonored connects assassination to a broader character, ability, and world progression. Choose Hitman when elaborate targets, disguises, social stealth, and replayability matter more than powers or a connected RPG-style setting.

Best for: replayability, disguises, social stealth, elaborate targets, and emergent assassination setups.

Is Deus Ex the best choice for player freedom?

Choose Deus Ex if you want role-playing, augmentations, dialogue, and several ways to solve a problem more than you want supernatural abilities. Eidos-Montréal’s official page says, “Player freedom is at the heart of the gameplay and story of Deus Ex,” and describes it as a first-person role-playing game.

Its particular strength is the range of approaches. A situation can involve stealth, combat, hacking, social interaction, exploration, or a combination of those options. The important point is not that every challenge has an unlimited number of solutions; it is that the game’s systems invite you to bring your build, information, and preferred method to the problem. This is the clearest choice on the list for the reader who asks, “Are there games with multiple ways to solve problems?”

Deus Ex also explains why immersive sims are not defined by one tone. Its cyberpunk role-playing framework is very different from the haunted science-fiction station of Prey or the supernatural stealth of Dishonored, yet the focus on player-directed solutions connects them. Augmentations and dialogue give the freedom a role-playing shape rather than a purely action-oriented one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is age. Expect an older interface and presentation, and approach it as a historical classic rather than a recent release with contemporary conveniences. If you value choice, hacking, augmentation, and systemic problem-solving enough to accept that older presentation, it is one of the strongest recommendations here.

Best for: branching choices, role-playing, augmentations, hacking, dialogue, exploration, and multiple approaches.

Can an immersive sim be top-down?

Yes. Weird West is the option here for players willing to leave first-person view behind. Devolver Digital describes it as an immersive sim from the co-creators of Dishonored and Prey. Its official page says that “Weird West supports different styles of play in a simulated sandbox world where characters, factions, and even places react to a player’s decisions.”

The top-down camera changes how you inhabit the world. You do not get the same close first-person sensation of peering around a corner or moving through a room, so it should not be sold as a visual or mechanical clone of Dishonored. What carries over is the design philosophy: systems interact, unusual solutions are possible, and consequences can persist beyond a single encounter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reactive structure is the reason to choose it. Characters, factions, and places can respond to decisions, giving the world a sense of continuity rather than treating each encounter as an isolated puzzle. Its weird-fiction Western setting also makes it a useful counterexample to the idea that an immersive sim needs science fiction, gothic cities, or a first-person camera.

Best for: reactive worlds, systemic consequences, unusual solutions, top-down play, and a weird-fiction Western setting.

What does “immersive sim” mean in practice?

There is no universally settled boundary for the term. A useful working definition is a systems-driven game in which player freedom comes from interacting with spaces, objects, abilities, characters, and rules, with results that can emerge from how those elements combine. The label is less useful than the concrete design features it points toward.

A game does not become an immersive sim simply because it offers dialogue branches or choices. A branching conversation can be valuable, but it is only one component. Ask whether the surrounding spaces and rules support different ways to handle a situation: a route through a building, a tool or ability, a conversation, a hack, a distraction, a disguise, a direct confrontation, or some combination. That practical test separates systemic freedom from a story that merely presents a few predetermined choices.

These recommendations emphasize different kinds of freedom. System Shock and Prey-style games emphasize exploration, environmental information, and improvisation under pressure. Deathloop emphasizes abilities, movement, and learning repeatable spaces. Deus Ex puts role-playing choices and augmentations at the center. Weird West emphasizes a reactive sandbox. Gloomwood narrows the focus toward stealth and horror tension. Hitman concentrates on social infiltration and assassination setups.

How do these games compare?

Camera and presentation

System Shock remake, Deathloop, Deus Ex, and Gloomwood are first-person experiences. That perspective is useful when environmental clues, movement, sound, and close interaction are central. Weird West uses a top-down camera, which creates more distance from the character while preserving its systemic, reactive design. Hitman belongs in the adjacent category and is best understood through its mission-based social-assassination structure rather than through a single immersive-sim label.

Primary fantasy

Each game asks you to inhabit a different role. System Shock is about survival and investigation in a hostile station. Deathloop combines supernatural-style mobility, stealth-action, and time-loop planning. Deus Ex is an augmented role-playing experience in which choices and methods matter. Weird West presents reactive frontier survival from above. Gloomwood focuses on stealth horror, darkness, and sound. Hitman is about social assassination, disguises, and elaborate target setups.

Structure and replay

Deathloop and Hitman both make repeat visits central, but for different reasons. Deathloop uses a time loop to turn information and route refinement into progression. Hitman uses mission spaces as repeatable assassination sandboxes. System Shock remake and Deus Ex lean more toward exploratory spaces in which you investigate and choose your approach as you move through the world. Weird West highlights consequences that can carry across encounters, while Gloomwood uses a focused stealth-horror structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What “freedom” actually means

It helps to separate tool-based improvisation, role-playing choice, environmental interaction, and emergent responses instead of reducing them to one generic freedom score. A game can give you many abilities but few social choices; another can offer dialogue and augmentations while presenting a more dated interface. The relevant question is which kind of agency you want to exercise.

Accessibility and current state

Older interfaces and presentation affect Deus Ex and the classic lineage that includes System Shock and Thief. The System Shock remake updates the original’s visuals, controls, interface, sounds, and music, while Deus Ex remains an older experience by design. Gloomwood has the most important current-state caveat: it is in Early Access, and its developer has not stated an estimated completion date as of October 30, 2026.

Where did the immersive-sim tradition come from?

For a historical starting point, look to Looking Glass games such as Ultima Underworld, System Shock, System Shock 2, and Thief, followed by Ion Storm’s Deus Ex and Arkane’s Dishonored, Prey, and Deathloop. These games are commonly grouped in scholarly discussion of the tradition, even though the label itself remains unsettled.

This lineage helps explain why the recommendations differ so much in camera, setting, and tone. The shared thread is not a single visual style or a requirement for branching dialogue. It is the use of game rules and environments to make room for multiple approaches, player-directed solutions, and consequences that emerge from interaction.

  1. Identify the setting you want. Choose System Shock remake for sci-fi isolation, Deathloop for a stylized time-loop setting, Deus Ex for cyberpunk role-playing, Weird West for a reactive frontier, Gloomwood for gothic stealth horror, or Hitman for mission-based assassination.
  2. Decide how close you need the camera to feel. If first-person movement is essential, favor System Shock, Deathloop, Deus Ex, or Gloomwood. If a top-down view is acceptable, Weird West opens up a different kind of systemic play.
  3. Pick your preferred kind of agency. Choose tools and investigation in System Shock, abilities and routes in Deathloop, augmentations and dialogue in Deus Ex, persistent reactions in Weird West, stealth tension in Gloomwood, or disguises and social cues in Hitman.
  4. Check your tolerance for older or unfinished presentation. Deus Ex has an older interface, the classic lineage is intentionally retro in structure, and Gloomwood remains Early Access without a stated completion estimate.
  • Station exploration, sci-fi clues, and survival pressure: System Shock remake.
  • Powers, movement, and carefully authored routes: Deathloop.
  • Augmentations, role-playing, and varied problem-solving: Deus Ex.
  • A reactive sandbox with a different camera and setting: Weird West.
  • Stealth, darkness, and horror tension: Gloomwood, with its Early Access status in mind.
  • Disguises, social infiltration, and repeatable assassination plans: Hitman.

These are recommendations by preference, not a claim that one game is objectively the best. Their overlaps are real, but so are the differences in structure, tone, camera, accessibility, and the kind of freedom each one emphasizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the closest game to Prey?

The System Shock remake is the closest choice here if you want a hostile sci-fi station, environmental storytelling, logs, resource pressure, and improvisational problem-solving. It is more overtly survival-horror and retro-structured than Prey, so expect a related lineage rather than an identical experience.

What is the closest modern game to Dishonored?

Deathloop is the closest modern Arkane-style recommendation when powers, first-person movement, stealth-action, authored spaces, and multiple routes matter most. Its time-loop structure and repeated locations make it a distinct game rather than a direct sequel in everything but name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are all of these games first-person?

No. Weird West uses a top-down perspective. System Shock remake, Deathloop, Deus Ex, and Gloomwood are first-person recommendations; Hitman is included as an adjacent mission-based social-assassination sandbox.

Does a game need branching dialogue to count as an immersive sim?

No. Dialogue choices can be part of the experience, but the more useful signal is whether spaces, objects, abilities, characters, and rules work together to support different approaches. A branching conversation by itself does not establish that kind of systems-driven play.

Which game is best for multiple ways to solve problems?

Choose Deus Ex if you want the strongest emphasis on role-playing freedom, augmentations, hacking, stealth, combat, social interaction, and combinations of those approaches. Choose System Shock or Deathloop if you want that flexibility expressed more through exploration, tools, abilities, and routes.

Is Gloomwood a finished game?

It is currently classified as an Early Access immersive sim, stealth, survival-horror, and first-person game. Its developer has not stated an estimated completion date, so treat its unfinished development state as a central purchase and play decision as of October 30, 2026.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Is Hitman an immersive sim like Dishonored?

It is best described here as an adjacent recommendation. Its replayable assassination spaces, disguises, social cues, and emergent setups overlap strongly with Dishonored, but its mission-based social-assassination structure is different from a continuous supernatural role-playing world.

Are current prices and platform availability included here?

No prices, platform lists, or edition-by-edition availability are established in this guide. Check the current store listing for the game and edition you are considering before buying.

The Bottom Line

For the closest Prey follow-up, choose the System Shock remake. For Dishonored-style powers and authored spaces, choose Deathloop. Pick Deus Ex for role-playing freedom, Weird West for a reactive top-down sandbox, Gloomwood for unfinished but distinctive stealth horror, and Hitman for replayable social assassination.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
