Yes—you can use many IKEA TRÅDFRI devices without an IKEA hub. For direct control in Home Assistant, you need a compatible Zigbee coordinator and the ZHA integration; device features vary by model. If you already own the older TRÅDFRI Gateway, you can connect that to Home Assistant instead. DIRIGERA is a separate option, using Home Assistant’s documented HomeKit or Matter routes rather than a dedicated core integration.
What “hacking” IKEA TRÅDFRI means here
In this guide, “hacking” means controlling IKEA smart-home devices outside the IKEA app by connecting them to open-source home-automation software such as Home Assistant. It does not mean modifying device firmware or bypassing security. The practical choice is whether to keep an IKEA hub, use a Zigbee coordinator connected to Home Assistant, or connect through DIRIGERA and a supported Home Assistant route.
The direct route is not hub-free in the broad sense: it removes the IKEA hub but requires Zigbee radio hardware. IKEA’s UK support guidance also says some bulbs, remotes, and motion sensors can pair directly with each other without the app or Wi-Fi; that limited device-to-device setup is different from integrating them into Home Assistant. Use the older TRÅDFRI Gateway you already own
Home Assistant’s TRÅDFRI integration connects to the IKEA Gateway over your local network. You need the security key printed on the underside of the gateway. A permanent IP address for the gateway is recommended so Home Assistant can reliably reach it.
- Connect the TRÅDFRI Gateway to your router and confirm it is powered and on the network.
- In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services, select Add integration, and search for TRÅDFRI.
- Follow the setup flow and enter the gateway security key from its underside when prompted.
- If Home Assistant cannot connect, restart the gateway and assign it a permanent IP address on your network, then try again.
Home Assistant notes that after a gateway firmware update, you may need to repeat configuration. It also does not import groups created in the IKEA app because of stability issues; create native Home Assistant light groups instead. Pair devices directly with ZHA and a Zigbee coordinator
ZHA lets Home Assistant communicate with many Zigbee devices through a compatible coordinator, such as a USB Zigbee coordinator. It is the option to consider if you do not own an IKEA hub or want devices paired directly to Home Assistant. A coordinator is essential for this route; the IKEA gateway is not a substitute for ZHA’s compatible radio hardware.
- Connect a Zigbee coordinator supported by Home Assistant to the Home Assistant host or network, following the coordinator’s installation instructions.
- In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Devices & services > Add integration and choose Zigbee Home Automation.
- Complete ZHA setup by selecting the detected coordinator and its connection details.
- Put the IKEA device into its pairing or reset mode according to its model instructions, then use ZHA’s Add device flow.
- Test the controls and sensors you intend to automate before relying on them. ZHA support and exposed features can vary by device.
ZHA includes device management, binding, network backup, and coordinator migration capabilities, but these do not guarantee that every IKEA device exposes every feature you expect. Its documentation explains that binding behavior can depend on the device and coordinator. Consult the ZHA documentation for device support and network details.

Know what the legacy gateway does—and does not—expose
The most important difference for remotes and sensors is automation events. Home Assistant’s TRÅDFRI Gateway integration does not expose remote or sensor events for automations; for shortcut buttons, remotes, and motion sensors, its documented limitation is battery status only. Home Assistant points users toward ZHA or HomeKit routes for those devices. If your goal is to trigger automations from a remote button press or motion detection, check the route’s device support before moving hardware or buying a coordinator. DIRIGERA is IKEA’s newer hub, distinct from the older TRÅDFRI Gateway. IKEA says it supports older IKEA smart products and supports Matter, Thread, and Zigbee. IKEA UK’s setup guidance says DIRIGERA connects to a router by Ethernet and is configured with the IKEA Home smart app.

Home Assistant’s documentation describes access through HomeKit or Matter integrations, rather than a dedicated core DIRIGERA integration. Its Matter bridge documentation recorded supported bridged devices for DIRIGERA hub version 2.615.8 in September 2024; that is a version-specific documentation point, not a statement about every newer hub version. Firmware updates and compatibility deserve care
Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation lists IKEA among manufacturers for which over-the-air firmware may be available, when a public manufacturer firmware image and support for the specific device exist. An available update is not automatically risk-free: Home Assistant warns that an update can break functionality such as group binding, require ZHA changes, or, rarely, brick a device. Before updating, consider whether you depend on binding or other device-specific behavior, and avoid treating an OTA update as a necessary step merely because ZHA offers it. Use pytradfri only for the legacy gateway
pytradfri is a Python library for controlling devices through the older TRÅDFRI Gateway, not DIRIGERA. Its README lists project-verified compatibility examples, including a TRÅDFRI Gateway E1526 on version 1.19.32, a TRÅDFRI remote on version 2.3.014, and a wall plug on version 2.0.022. These are documented examples, not a guarantee for every model or current firmware. The project maintainers report that IKEA announced in July 2024 it would no longer provide gateway updates in favor of DIRIGERA; they say pytradfri maintenance will continue for security patches and bug fixes. pytradfri README
