In an August 2024 report based on a Zerto-sponsored survey, IDC found that respondents experienced an average of 4.2 data-related business disruptions in the prior 12 months. IDC argues that organizations need recovery capabilities beyond backup alone—including disaster recovery planning and, for cyber incidents, ways to detect malware and restore in a clean environment.
What IDC’s study says about disruption and recovery
IDC’s report, The State of Disaster Recovery and Cyber-Recovery, 2024–2025: Factoring in AI (IDC #US52445524), was published in August 2024. Its findings come from a worldwide survey conducted in February 2024 of 504 respondents at organizations with 500 to more than 10,000 employees, spanning 18 industries. No industry represented more than 9% of respondents. Zerto sponsored the survey, so the figures describe those respondents rather than all businesses. (IDC report details; survey methodology)
- Respondents reported an average of 4.2 data-related business disruptions in the prior 12 months.
- 49% cited lost employee productivity as a consequence; 29% cited direct revenue loss.
- 36% said their organization had coordinated disaster recovery and cyber-recovery plans.
IDC describes coordinated planning as associated with less spending on technology purchases and training and faster recoveries. That is a relationship reported by the study, not proof that coordination alone caused those outcomes. The survey question counted incidents involving loss of access to at least one application, including cyber-related incidents such as ransomware. These numbers are a 2024 survey snapshot, not a current 2026 measure.
Why backup alone may not be enough
Backup and recovery provide a foundation: they preserve copies of data and make restoration possible. But a backup does not, by itself, move applications to another site, bring supporting infrastructure online, coordinate application failover, or guide staff through recovery. IDC’s report states, “B/R alone is insufficient for disaster recovery (DR) or cyber-recovery (CR).” (IDC report)

Disaster recovery restores service after an outage
A disaster recovery capability may include replication to a second site, replicated infrastructure, application failover and failback, and operational runbooks. Replication can be asynchronous or synchronous; the appropriate approach depends on the organization’s recovery objectives and systems. The copies alone are not the whole plan: infrastructure and application processes must also be ready to resume service.
Cyber-recovery addresses compromised data and systems
A cyber incident may leave replicated or backed-up data infected or otherwise untrustworthy. Cyber-recovery can therefore require malware detection, forensic analysis, and recovery in a clean environment, in addition to restoring data. A rapid restore is not a successful recovery if the restored environment carries the compromise forward.

What continuous data protection adds
Recovery objectives have at least two distinct dimensions: how much data the organization can afford to lose and how quickly it must resume service. A recovery point objective (RPO) expresses acceptable data loss as a period of time; a recovery time objective (RTO) expresses the target time to restore service. IDC says availability service-level agreements and these objectives are becoming shorter and stricter, making it important to set them according to business requirements rather than choosing a technology first.
Continuous data protection records changes at a finer time granularity than periodic recovery points can offer. IDC describes it as a way to pursue RPOs measured in seconds, which can reduce the data lost between recovery points. The report does not establish that every product, application, or infrastructure can achieve a seconds-level RPO. Organizations need to validate actual performance for their workloads and recovery environment. IDC’s conclusion puts the point this way: “Granular data recovery means minimal data loss, especially when using continuous data protection capabilities that deliver an RPO measured in seconds.” (IDC report)

Continuous protection addresses the recovery-point question; it does not automatically provide fast application startup, failover orchestration, integrity checks, incident response, or a clean recovery environment. Those capabilities must be planned and tested alongside the protection method.
How to evaluate a recovery approach
Start with business impact: identify which applications matter most, how much data loss is tolerable for each, and how long each can remain unavailable. Then compare solutions and operating procedures against those requirements.

IDC cautions that no single vendor provides every feature for every scenario and recommends evaluating complementary ecosystems. A capability checklist should therefore include how components work together in the organization’s actual recovery process, not merely whether each appears on a product feature list. (IDC report)

The study’s central implication is not that every organization should adopt a particular product or promise a seconds-level recovery point. It is that recovery planning must match the consequences of disruption. Backup remains essential, while continuous protection can narrow potential data loss; disaster recovery adds the infrastructure and processes needed to restore service, and cyber-recovery adds safeguards for compromised environments. Organizations should define workload-specific RPO and RTO targets, verify achievable recovery performance, and exercise the procedures that turn protected data into a trustworthy operating service.
