For most Apple users who exceed the free 5GB, iCloud+ is worth paying for. The $0.99-per-month 50GB plan is the practical first upgrade when iPhone or iPad backups and photos no longer fit. A 200GB plan makes more sense when several devices or family members share storage. If your use stays below 5GB, or you already have enough capacity through Google One or Microsoft 365, you can usually skip the subscription.
The decision is not only about gigabytes. iCloud+ also bundles Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video. The value depends on whether you use those Apple services, how many people share your storage and where your household already keeps photos and files.
What do you get with the free 5GB of iCloud storage?
Apple includes 5GB of iCloud storage with every Apple account at no charge. Apple describes iCloud as a service that keeps information safe, automatically backed up and available across your devices, with 5GB free.
That allowance is shared by the iCloud data associated with your account, including device backups, photos and files. A single iPhone with a modest photo library may remain under the limit for a while, but automatic backups and years of photos can consume it quickly. Once your usage approaches 5GB, checking the storage breakdown is more useful than guessing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud. The screen shows your current usage and which categories are using space. Delete data you no longer need, move files or photos to a service you already pay for, and reassess before buying an upgrade. If you can stay below 5GB without disrupting your backup and photo workflow, the free tier remains the best value.
How much does iCloud+ cost?
Apple’s U.S. monthly prices are listed below. Apple publishes different currencies, taxes and prices by region, so check the amount shown in your own Apple account before subscribing.
| iCloud+ storage | U.S. monthly price |
|---|---|
| 50GB | $0.99 |
| 200GB | $2.99 |
| 2TB | $9.99 |
| 6TB | $29.99 |
| 12TB | $59.99 |
These are recurring monthly prices, not one-time purchases. The low entry price matters: you can start with 50GB, observe your usage, and move to a larger tier if your library or household needs grow. Paying for 2TB, 6TB or 12TB before you need that capacity ties up more money each month without improving a small library’s backup experience.

50GB is usually enough for one person with one or two Apple devices and a moderate backup and photo collection. It is the sensible first upgrade because it adds ten times the free allowance for less than a dollar per month in the United States.
Use the storage screen rather than a generic rule of thumb. If your current use is only slightly above 5GB, 50GB leaves room for future backups and photos. If you are already close to 50GB, buying that tier may create another capacity problem soon; look at 200GB instead.
- Choose 50GB when one person’s backups and photos are the main demand and your current usage leaves substantial headroom.
- Reconsider 50GB when several Apple devices use the same account, your photo library grows quickly or you expect another household member to share the plan.
- Stay free when you can reduce usage below 5GB without giving up the backups or photos you actually need.
Because the plan is month-to-month, starting at 50GB is a low-risk way to measure real usage. Review the iCloud storage screen after adding a device or importing a large photo collection rather than waiting for a backup warning.

When should a family choose 200GB or more?
The 200GB tier is the common household choice when multiple people or devices need one shared pool. iCloud+ plans can be shared with up to five other family members, so the relevant question is the group’s combined usage, not the size of one person’s phone.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose 200GB for a shared household pool
Two adults with several Apple devices can outgrow 50GB even if neither has an unusually large library. A 200GB plan provides room for separate backups and photo collections while keeping the monthly U.S. price at $2.99. Before switching, add the current usage shown for each participating account and leave room for growth.
Choose 2TB for large libraries or creators
The 2TB plan costs $9.99 per month in the United States. It is aimed at households with substantial photo and video libraries, several active users or creative work that makes a 200GB ceiling uncomfortable. The capacity is generous, but the higher recurring cost is difficult to justify if your combined use remains a small fraction of 2TB.
Choose 6TB or 12TB only for very high demand
Apple lists 6TB at $29.99 per month and 12TB at $59.99 per month in the United States. Those tiers are appropriate only when a large household or an unusually large media library can use the capacity. They are not cost-effective simply because they are available; confirm your measured usage and expected growth first.
What iCloud+ features are included besides storage?
Every paid iCloud+ tier includes more than additional space: Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video. These extras can change the value calculation, but only if you will actually use them.
Private Relay
Private Relay is part of iCloud+. If you specifically want this Apple privacy feature and already use iCloud for backups or photos, its inclusion can make a small storage plan more attractive than a storage-only alternative. Do not assign it a dollar value if you will leave it turned off.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

Hide My Email
Hide My Email lets you use alternate addresses for sign-ups and messages. It is useful for separating registrations from your primary address, but it should count toward the subscription’s value only when you have a practical need for that separation.
Custom Email Domain and Apple Invites
Custom Email Domain is relevant to people who want an email address on a domain they control. Apple Invites adds another Apple service to the bundle. Neither feature makes a 2TB plan sensible by itself; they are incremental benefits attached to whichever storage tier fits your actual usage.
HomeKit Secure Video
HomeKit Secure Video can matter to households with compatible home cameras. If you do not use that camera ecosystem, it contributes no practical value and should not influence your plan choice.

Do I need iCloud+ for an iPhone backup?
No. You do not need a paid plan merely because you own an iPhone. Apple provides 5GB free, and that allowance can support backups and other iCloud data when your total use fits within it.
You need more capacity when the backups, photos and files tied to your account exceed the free allowance and you want to keep using iCloud for them. At that point, a paid tier prevents storage capacity from becoming the limiting factor. The right plan is the smallest one that leaves sensible headroom for your current devices and near-term growth.
That distinction is important because buying storage does not automatically make every Apple service valuable. If your primary need is a large photo library, judge the plan by photo capacity and your cross-device workflow. If your need is only a small backup overrun, 50GB may solve it without paying for a much larger tier.

Is iCloud cheaper than Google One?
There is no universal winner because the services start at different capacities and are most convenient in different ecosystems. Google accounts include up to 15GB free, while Google One Basic provides 100GB for $1.99 per month and supports sharing with up to five other people.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Service | Included or entry storage | Monthly price stated in the available plans | Sharing |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud | 5GB free | 50GB iCloud+ for $0.99 in the U.S. | Paid plans can be shared with up to five other family members |
| Up to 15GB free with a Google account | Google One Basic: 100GB for $1.99 | Basic supports sharing with up to five other people |
On capacity alone, Google’s free allowance is larger and its Basic plan offers more than twice the storage of iCloud’s entry tier. iCloud can still be the better value for an Apple-centered household because backups and photos remain integrated with Apple devices, and iCloud+ adds Apple-specific privacy and home features.
Compare the service your household already uses. Moving photos and files between ecosystems can create more friction than a small monthly price difference. Also compare regional taxes and the local prices displayed at checkout rather than converting the U.S. figures yourself.
How does Microsoft 365 change the calculation?
Microsoft documents 5GB of free storage and larger OneDrive allocations bundled with Microsoft 365. If your household already pays for Microsoft 365, some of the storage value is already included, so adding iCloud+ solely for files may duplicate an existing benefit.
That does not make iCloud redundant for Apple backups or Apple-specific features. A household can reasonably use Microsoft’s storage for work documents and iCloud for device backups and photos. The useful comparison is the total amount you would pay for services you actually use, not the advertised capacity of an unused bundle.

How can you decide whether iCloud+ is worth it?
Use this sequence before subscribing or upgrading:
- Measure current use. Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud and note the total and the categories consuming space.
- Test the free tier. If use is below 5GB, remove unnecessary data and confirm that your desired backups and photos still fit.
- Start with 50GB when you need a small increase. It is the lowest-cost U.S. paid option and gives enough room for many single-user setups.
- Move to 200GB for shared use. Add the storage needs of family members and devices before deciding that 50GB is sufficient.
- Reserve 2TB or more for demonstrated demand. Large photo and video libraries, creator workflows and large households are the cases that justify the higher tiers.
- Value the included features honestly. Count Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video only when you expect to use them.
- Compare existing subscriptions. Check whether Google One or Microsoft 365 already supplies enough storage for the files and photos your household keeps outside Apple’s ecosystem.
- Recheck local pricing. Apple’s prices, currencies and taxes vary by region, so use the amount shown for your account when calculating the yearly cost.
What are the common mistakes when choosing an iCloud plan?
Buying capacity before checking the breakdown
A plan upgrade is not a substitute for understanding what is consuming storage. The iCloud settings screen can reveal that one category, such as backups or photos, is responsible for most of the usage. Knowing that lets you choose a tier based on a real need instead of a rough estimate.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choosing a family tier for one person
Family sharing is useful only when other people will actually use the shared pool. If you are the only user and remain well below 50GB, 200GB adds cost without adding a necessary capability.
Ignoring ecosystem overlap
Paying for Google One or Microsoft 365 may already cover general file storage. Decide whether iCloud+ is filling a distinct Apple backup, photo or privacy need rather than paying twice for similar capacity.
Assuming U.S. prices apply everywhere
The listed dollar amounts are U.S. monthly prices. Taxes, currency conversion and regional pricing can change the amount charged in another country, so make the final comparison using your local subscription screen.
What is the final verdict on paying for iCloud storage?
Pay for iCloud+ when your Apple backups or photos exceed 5GB, when a shared Apple household needs a common pool, or when you will use the included privacy and home features. Start at 50GB for a single user, consider 200GB for a family, and reserve 2TB, 6TB or 12TB for measured high demand. Stay on the free plan when your usage fits comfortably under 5GB or another subscription already meets your storage needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an iCloud+ plan cover several people at once?
Yes. Apple says paid iCloud+ plans can be shared with up to five other family members. The shared allowance is one pool, so each person’s backups, photos and files reduce the capacity available to everyone else.
Do iCloud+ features require the 2TB plan?
No. The iCloud+ bundle includes Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video across the paid tiers. Choose the storage capacity separately from the features you expect to use.
Is Google’s larger free allowance automatically better for an iPhone owner?
Not necessarily. Google accounts include up to 15GB free, but an Apple-focused user may value iCloud’s integrated backup and photo workflow more than the extra free capacity. Compare where your household actually stores and accesses its data.
Should I count an existing Microsoft 365 subscription when pricing iCloud+?
Yes. Microsoft documents 5GB free storage and larger OneDrive allocations bundled with Microsoft 365. If that bundle already handles your files, evaluate iCloud+ mainly for Apple backups, photos and its included Apple features rather than duplicate file capacity.
