Short answer: In India, a Hybrid Long-Short Fund is a Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) strategy that must keep at least 25% in equity and equity-related instruments, at least 25% in debt, and may take up to 25% unhedged short exposure through equity and debt derivatives. An equity mutual fund primarily invests in equities for long-term growth. The SIF therefore adds debt allocation, derivatives, short-position and interval-redemption complexity that an ordinary equity scheme does not have as a category-wide requirement.
Neither label alone tells you which fund is safer or will earn more. Compare the specific scheme’s Riskometer, portfolio, dealing calendar, fees, investment strategy and statutory tax classification before investing.
What a Hybrid Long-Short Fund is
Under the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) SIF framework, Hybrid Long-Short Fund is a defined investment strategy, not a general description for any fund that occasionally uses hedging. SEBI’s March 20, 2026 Master Circular sets the strategy’s portfolio boundaries.

Required equity and debt exposure
The strategy must allocate at least 25% of its assets to equity and equity-related instruments and at least 25% to debt instruments. Those are minimums, not target weights that every scheme must hold at all times. The remaining assets can be allocated according to the scheme’s stated mandate, subject to applicable rules and disclosures.

The debt floor is the major structural difference from an equity-only portfolio. Debt can change the sources of return and risk through interest-rate movements, credit quality, liquidity and default exposure. It does not make the fund a capital-protected product.
How short exposure works
The strategy may have up to 25% short exposure through unhedged derivative positions in equity and debt instruments. The 25% figure is a ceiling, not a requirement: a manager can run a smaller short position or no short position at a particular time.
A short derivative is intended to gain when the referenced exposure falls, but it loses when that exposure rises. The result also depends on the derivative contract, pricing, margin, roll, liquidity, counterparty and how closely the position tracks the exposure the manager is trying to offset. A short position is not a promise that losses in the long portfolio will be cancelled.
SEBI’s investor booklet cautions that “derivatives are high risk products and mainly used for hedging purposes.” In a Hybrid Long-Short Fund, investors should therefore read how the scheme uses derivatives rather than assuming that the word “short” means permanent downside protection.
Interval dealing rather than daily open-ended dealing
The strategy is an interval investment strategy. Its rules provide for redemption at least twice a week, or a lesser frequency selected by the asset management company (AMC) as specified in the scheme documents. This is different from assuming that an investor can place a valid redemption request on every business day at the next applicable net asset value.
Before investing, obtain the fund’s dealing calendar and confirm the cut-off time, eligible dealing dates, settlement timetable, minimum amount, applicable charges and the procedure for requests submitted outside an interval. Your ability to exit depends on those terms, not on the fund name.

What an equity mutual fund is
AMFI defines an equity scheme as one that primarily invests in equities and equity-related instruments, seeks long-term growth and can be volatile in the short term. AMFI describes these schemes as generally suited to investors with a higher risk appetite and a longer investment horizon.

“Equity mutual fund” is a broad category, not one uniform portfolio. A large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, sectoral, thematic, value or concentrated scheme can have very different holdings and volatility. Some schemes may use derivatives or hold cash within their own mandates, but there is no category-wide requirement equivalent to the Hybrid Long-Short strategy’s 25% debt floor and 25% unhedged-short ceiling.
SEBI’s investor booklet describes a mutual fund as pooling money from many investors and investing it in stocks, bonds, short-term money-market instruments, other securities or assets, or a combination of those investments. The scheme’s own information document determines what it may actually buy, how concentrated it may be and how it manages risk.
Hybrid Long-Short Fund versus equity mutual fund: side-by-side
| Comparison point | Hybrid Long-Short Fund (SIF) | Equity mutual fund |
|---|---|---|
| Regulatory identity | SIF investment strategy under SEBI’s framework | Broad equity mutual-fund category described in AMFI/SEBI categorisation |
| Core allocation | At least 25% equity/equity-related instruments and at least 25% debt instruments | Primarily equity and equity-related instruments; exact allocation is scheme-specific |
| Short exposure | Up to 25% unhedged short exposure through equity and debt derivatives | No equivalent category-wide Hybrid Long-Short mandate; derivative use must be checked in the individual scheme documents |
| Liquidity | Interval strategy; redemption at least twice weekly or less frequently if the AMC specifies | Dealing frequency and exit terms depend on the scheme’s documents |
| Main complexity | Equity, debt, derivatives, short-position implementation and interval liquidity | Equity-market, style, concentration, manager and scheme-specific derivative risks |
| Typical use case | An experienced investor deliberately seeking a mixed portfolio with limited short-derivative capacity | An investor seeking long-term equity exposure and able to tolerate equity volatility |
| Documents to inspect | Information document (ISID), SIF rules, Riskometer, dealing calendar, fees and portfolio disclosures | Scheme Information Document (SID), Key Information Memorandum (KIM), Riskometer, portfolio, fees, dealing and exit terms |
How the portfolios differ in practice
Equity exposure is a floor in the SIF strategy, not the whole portfolio
An equity scheme’s central job is equity participation: its returns are driven primarily by the shares and equity-linked instruments it owns. The Hybrid Long-Short strategy must have meaningful equity exposure, but its required debt allocation means an investor is buying a blended mandate rather than a pure equity allocation.
Two funds with the same 25% minimum equity rule can still behave differently. One manager may hold substantially more equity, while another may hold more debt or vary exposure within the permitted framework. Read the latest portfolio and the stated ranges instead of treating the regulatory minimum as the expected allocation.
Shorting is permitted, not guaranteed
The phrase “long-short” often leads investors to expect a permanently market-neutral portfolio. That is not what the rule says. The strategy permits up to 25% unhedged short exposure through derivatives; it does not require the manager to maintain a short book, and it does not specify that the fund must offset an equal amount of long exposure.

Ask the AMC how it measures short exposure, which equity or debt derivatives it may use, how it manages margin and collateral, how positions are rolled, and what happens when markets become illiquid. These implementation details can affect returns even when the broad direction of the underlying market is correct.
Equity schemes have their own risks even without a short mandate
An equity mutual fund can be highly volatile because its value follows the shares and equity-related instruments it owns. Market-cap concentration, sector exposure, valuation, style changes, trading volume and the manager’s decisions all matter. The absence of a category-wide short allowance does not mean every equity scheme has the same risk or that it cannot use derivatives under its own mandate.
Can a Hybrid Long-Short Fund short stocks?
Yes, it can obtain short exposure to equity through derivatives, subject to the strategy’s maximum of 25% unhedged short exposure across equity and debt instruments. “Through derivatives” is important: the rule describes derivative positions, so do not assume the fund is directly borrowing and selling every stock it is bearish on.

Short exposure can help a manager express a negative view or offset part of a long exposure, but it introduces basis risk, roll and liquidity risk, counterparty risk and the possibility of losses when prices rise. Derivatives can magnify the effect of a relatively small market move, so the fund’s Riskometer and disclosures deserve close attention.
Which fund is riskier?
There is no honest category-wide answer. An aggressive or concentrated equity scheme can be riskier than a conservatively managed Hybrid Long-Short Fund, while a Hybrid Long-Short Fund with volatile derivatives and difficult-to-exit intervals can be riskier for an investor who needs liquidity. Compare the specific schemes rather than ranking the labels.

Risk layers in both types of fund
- Market risk: equity prices can fall, and equity investments can result in loss of principal.
- Liquidity and trading-volume risk: a security or derivative may be difficult to trade at the desired price.
- Settlement and counterparty risk: a transaction may not settle as expected or a counterparty may fail to perform.
- Interest-rate and default risk: debt holdings can lose value as rates move or an issuer’s ability to pay deteriorates.
- Currency, policy and taxation risk: regulatory, economic, currency and tax changes can affect holdings and returns.
These risks are identified in AMFI’s mutual-fund risk guidance. The Hybrid Long-Short strategy adds the possibility that a short or derivative position moves against the fund, that a hedge does not track the intended exposure, and that interval dealing delays an exit.

SEBI’s Riskometer applies to equity, debt and hybrid funds and is intended to help investors match a scheme’s labelled risk with their own tolerance. Treat it as a starting point. Read the portfolio, concentration limits, derivative policy, debt quality, liquidity terms, historical disclosures and costs before deciding whether the labelled risk is acceptable for your circumstances.
How often can you redeem?
Hybrid Long-Short Fund
Redemption is available on the intervals stated by the AMC, with the framework providing for at least two redemption opportunities per week or a lesser AMC-specified frequency. The exact dealing days, cut-off times and settlement dates are fund-specific. A request made on a non-dealing day may wait for the next available interval.
Equity mutual fund
Do not assume that every equity mutual fund has identical dealing terms. Open-ended schemes generally publish their dealing and cut-off rules, while particular structures can have exit loads, restrictions or other conditions. Read the SID and KIM and confirm the current redemption process with the AMC.
Questions to answer before investing
- Which days accept redemption requests?
- What is the cut-off time and which net asset value applies?
- How long after the dealing date will money reach your bank account?
- Is there an exit load or other charge?
- Can the scheme suspend, defer or limit redemptions under its disclosed rules?
- What minimum amount must remain after a partial redemption?
How are these funds taxed in India?
Do not apply a single tax rate merely from the words “Hybrid Long-Short” or “equity mutual fund.” AMFI’s tax guidance distinguishes equity-oriented funds and specified mutual funds, and tax treatment follows the Income-tax Act, applicable amendments, the scheme’s statutory classification and the relevant transfer date.
Your result can depend on at least four facts:
- Statutory classification: determine whether the scheme meets the tax law’s definition of an equity-oriented fund or falls under another classification, such as a specified mutual fund.
- Holding period: the period between acquisition and transfer can affect whether a gain is treated as short-term or long-term under the rules that apply to that asset and date.
- Transfer date: rates, definitions, thresholds and transitional provisions can change, so use the law in force on the relevant date.
- Your circumstances: residency, other income, losses, set-off rules, filing status and transaction details can change the final liability.
Obtain the scheme’s current tax disclosure and have a qualified tax adviser verify the treatment for your purchase and sale dates. Do not infer a rate from the fund’s marketing name, its equity minimum or the fact that it uses derivatives.

How to choose between the two
Use this sequence to compare a particular Hybrid Long-Short Fund with a particular equity scheme.
- Define the job of the money. Decide whether you need a long-term equity allocation, a mixed equity/debt allocation, or a strategy that can express limited short views. Match the choice to your goal, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses.
- Check the regulatory identity. Confirm that the first product is actually a Hybrid Long-Short SIF and not an ordinary aggressive-hybrid, balanced-advantage, arbitrage or equity-savings scheme. Those are different categories with different mandates.
- Read the allocation ranges. For the SIF, verify the 25% equity minimum, 25% debt minimum and the up-to-25% unhedged derivative short limit. For the equity fund, identify its permitted equity range, market-cap or sector concentration and any derivative authority.
- Study the actual portfolio. Look at equity holdings, debt issuers and ratings, cash, derivative positions, concentration and turnover. A regulatory limit is not the same as the current exposure.
- Evaluate implementation risk. Ask how the manager selects and rolls derivatives, handles margin and collateral, measures hedge effectiveness, manages counterparty exposure and responds to illiquid markets.
- Check liquidity before you invest. Record the SIF’s dealing intervals and settlement terms. For an equity scheme, read the stated dealing frequency, exit load and any restrictions. If you may need the money on a particular date, an interval structure may not fit.
- Compare the Riskometer with your capacity for loss. Consider emergency savings, income stability, liabilities and the largest loss you could withstand without selling at the wrong time. A higher labelled risk may be unsuitable even when the strategy sounds sophisticated.
- Verify taxation and costs. Confirm statutory tax classification, holding-period consequences, expense information, transaction charges and any exit load from current documents. Ask a tax professional about your facts rather than relying on a generic online rate.
- Recheck the documents on the investment date. Mandates, dealing calendars, disclosures and laws can change. Use the current ISID or SID, KIM, portfolio and AMC notices, not an old presentation.
Situations that illustrate the trade-offs
An investor seeking a core equity allocation
If the objective is straightforward long-term participation in shares and the investor can tolerate substantial short-term volatility, an appropriately diversified equity scheme may be easier to understand. The investor still has to select the market-cap, sector and style exposure and accept the possibility of loss.
An investor who wants equity, debt and tactical short exposure
A Hybrid Long-Short Fund may be relevant when the investor deliberately wants a blended mandate and understands that derivatives can change both risk and return. The investor must also be comfortable with interval redemption and with assessing a strategy that may have no short position at a given time.
Recommended Free Tools
An investor who may need cash next week
Neither a fund name nor an assumption about daily liquidity is enough. Check the exact dealing and settlement calendar first. An interval fund may not deliver cash on the date you need, even if its next redemption window is close.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
- “Long-short means protected.” It does not. The permitted short position can lose money when the underlying rises, and it may not offset the long portfolio.
- “The fund must be 25% short.” No. Up to 25% is a maximum permitted unhedged short exposure, not a required position.
- “The 25% debt allocation makes it low risk.” Debt brings interest-rate, credit, liquidity and default risks and does not guarantee principal.
- “All equity mutual funds are interchangeable.” Market-cap, sector, style, concentration, manager decisions and derivative use vary by scheme.
- “A Riskometer label is a complete analysis.” It is a useful starting point, not a substitute for the mandate, portfolio, liquidity terms and disclosures.
- “The category name determines the tax rate.” Tax depends on statutory classification, holding period, transfer date and the law applicable to the transaction.
- “A redemption request always settles immediately.” SIF intervals and scheme-specific dealing and settlement rules determine when an exit can be processed.
Bottom line for investors
An equity mutual fund is primarily a long-term equity-growth vehicle whose main risks come from the equity market, portfolio construction and manager decisions. A Hybrid Long-Short Fund combines minimum equity and debt allocations with permission to use up to 25% unhedged short exposure through derivatives, and it uses interval dealing. That can provide a different set of tools, but it also adds derivative, implementation and liquidity complexity.
Choose the structure that matches your objective, horizon, liquidity needs and ability to understand and bear the risks. Before investing in India, read the current scheme documents, inspect the actual portfolio and dealing calendar, check the Riskometer, and verify tax treatment for your own facts.
