You can buy and play Escape from Tarkov today; you cannot buy HUNGER yet. Tarkov is the finished, modern-firearms extraction benchmark, with its Steam 1.0 release on 15 November 2025, a $49.99 Standard Edition and an optional $29.99 PvE Zone in the US Steam store (prices checked October 2026). HUNGER is a planned 2026 Early Access extraction RPG from GOOD FUN CORPORATION: a plague-ravaged Napoleonic setting with flintlock guns, brutal melee, quests, professions and permanent character progression. Its closed beta ended on 26 October 2026, and Steam still shows no release-day price.

Choose Tarkov if you want a raid you can launch now, modern weapons, detailed ammunition and medical systems, or a complete AI-only mode. Wishlist or wait for HUNGER if you want character builds, historical weapons, a social hub and a no-forced-wipe RPG structure. The right choice depends less on a single “winner” than on whether you value simulation and immediate availability or character persistence and a different kind of combat.

What is the release status of HUNGER and Tarkov?

Tarkov is the available product. HUNGER is the upcoming one, so a comparison must separate what is shipped from what is promised.

HUNGER is still an Early Access game to watch

GOOD FUN CORPORATION’s Steam page says the team plans to release HUNGER in Early Access during 2026 and estimates roughly two years before reaching a fully featured state. The page says the price will gradually rise as content and features ship, but it gives no dollar amount or exact calendar day. The October 2026 closed beta ended on 26 October, and the studio said an open beta is planned before Early Access without announcing a date.

The beta attracted more than 16,000 concurrent players during Steam Next Fest, according to SteamDB figures reported by Notebookcheck and the studio’s coverage. Reports from that test praised the art direction, audio and tension of its flintlock combat, while criticism centered on sluggish movement, uneven character power and inconsistent performance. GOOD FUN said its follow-up work included spatialized audio, movement and vaulting, spear and weapon balance, vendor stock, reconnect behavior and narrowing level-based power gaps. Those are development targets, not guarantees about the launch build.

Tarkov is a live 1.0 game

Escape from Tarkov launched version 1.0 on Steam on 15 November 2025 and is also distributed through Battlestate Games’ launcher. Its official description calls it “the original extraction FPS where every raid is a gamble with death.” You can buy a Standard Edition now, then add the full PvE Zone separately. A console version is in development, but no release date has been announced; the current game is Windows PC.

The Steam audience remains active but not universally satisfied. Steam listed recent reviews as Mixed in October 2026: 53% positive from 2,456 reviews in the last 30 days and 62% positive from 13,956 English reviews. Steam-only activity was reported at 14,697 concurrent players at 03:00 UTC on 23 October 2026 and a 22.2K 30-day average later that month. Battlestate’s launcher adds players that those Steam figures do not count.

What is the core difference between HUNGER and Tarkov?

Tarkov treats extraction as a punishing military simulation. HUNGER uses extraction as the risk layer around a first-person RPG. Both make you carry valuable gear into a map, fight other players and AI, loot resources and extract before death takes the kit, but their long-term priorities are different.

Decision axis Escape from Tarkov HUNGER
Availability Playable 1.0 now on Windows PC Planned 2026 Early Access; closed beta ended 26 October 2026
Combat identity Modern firearms, ammunition penetration, armor classes, limb health, fractures and bleeds Single-shot black-powder firearms, glass grenades and melee weapons used together
Progression spine Gear, ammunition, traders, reputation and the Flea Market Living character levels, more than 100 planned mastery talents, abilities, quests and professions
Death and wipes Persistent PvP/PvE characters; optional seasonal characters reset every four to six months Experience and level remain after death; the studio promises no forced wipes
PvE Paid PvE Zone is a complete AI-only mode with its own character and economy Dungeons, bosses and a later PvE endgame are planned, not a shipped equivalent
Session shape Raids with extensive inventory, ammunition and medical preparation Expeditions built around quests and character progress; the director described 30–35 minutes as a low-end session target in a 2025 preview
Setting Modern PMC conflict in Norvinsk Plague-ravaged Napoleonic Europe, described by the studio as a “World After the End”
Party format Solo or squad PvPvE; an official PMC squad cap was not stated on the cited Steam page Solo, duo or trio expeditions

How does combat feel in each game?

The combat split is the clearest reason to choose one over the other. Tarkov asks you to understand modern ballistics and medical damage; HUNGER makes a shot an opening move before a dangerous close-quarters fight.

Tarkov is a modern-firearm simulation

Tarkov models ammunition penetration, armor classes, per-limb health, fractures and several types of bleeding. There is no minimap, hit marker or kill feed in the usual arcade sense. Weapon choice, bullet type, armor condition, sound and positioning matter more than simply pointing at a target. The result is deliberate and information-poor: you may not know who hit you, what hit you or whether an apparently safe route is covered.

Its equipment economy reinforces that combat. Traders are gated by reputation, the player-driven Flea Market changes how supplies are acquired, and a raid can fail because you mismanaged ammunition or medical items before you ever meet another PMC. This is why Tarkov remains the genre’s steepest on-ramp and why experienced players can spend as much time in preparation and stash management as in a raid.

HUNGER combines flintlocks, gadgets and melee

HUNGER’s principal firearms are largely single-shot flintlock pistols and rifles, with experimental hand mortars and glass grenades among the announced tools. Reloads are intentionally slow. A shot can open an engagement, but axes, maces, hammers and spears are first-class weapons rather than emergency backups. Melee is quieter than firing, while gunshots attract more Hunger, the game’s infected enemies.

Every Living also has Passive, Tactical and Ultimate abilities. Steam examples include stealth and lockpicking, faster reloads and improved weapon control, or a support specialization that sacrifices lethality to repair armor and heal teammates. That ability layer gives HUNGER more build variety than a purely kit-driven shooter, but beta reports indicate that balancing those power differences is still work in progress.

Which game resembles other titles?

HUNGER’s closest combat comparison is not a modern military shooter. Its black-powder sound discipline and PvPvE tension recall Hunt: Showdown 1896, while its melee and character-building ambitions sit closer to dungeon-crawling RPGs. Coverage of the beta summarized the mix as “Escape from Tarkov + Mordhau + Hunt: Showdown.” Tarkov is the better fit if the appeal is realistic rifles, ammunition charts and medical triage.

What happens to your character and gear after death?

Both games make carried gear vulnerable, but they disagree about what should be permanent.

HUNGER keeps the character, not necessarily the kit

In HUNGER, a Living gains experience from quests and surviving Expeditions and progresses from level 1 toward level 100. Gear can be lost on death, while experience continues to level that Living. The permanent layer is intended to be the character, skills and professions rather than an ever-larger collection of irreplaceable equipment. The studio explicitly promises no forced wipes, a major distinction for players who dislike rebuilding a character on a fixed schedule.

The Chateau hub is where that persistence becomes visible. It is planned to contain vendors, stash management, quest givers, gathering and crafting professions, and a player-driven marketplace. Steam advertises more than 100 mastery talents across a deep RPG progression system. A 2025 preview described four mastery trees—Physiology, Survival, Martial and Cunning—and six professions, with a character able to focus on two professions at a time; those named structures should be treated as preview-era details until GOOD FUN confirms the final Early Access roster.

Tarkov now separates persistent and seasonal progress

Tarkov no longer forces every player into a full wipe. Patch 1.1.0.0 introduced seasonal characters on separate servers. Battlestate’s notes state that seasonal progression resets automatically every four to six months when a major content update and new season begin, while PvP Zone and PvE Zone characters remain independent of those seasonal servers. You can therefore avoid seasonal resets, or opt into them for a fresh competitive cycle.

The practical distinction is that Tarkov’s lasting mastery still comes mainly from learning maps, ammunition, traders and risk management. A persistent character does not make a lost raid harmless: the kit, cash and time invested in preparing it remain at stake.

Tarkov: mastery through systems

  • Trader reputation and unlocks determine which weapons, armor and medical supplies you can access.
  • Ammo selection and armor knowledge are as important as weapon handling.
  • The Flea Market creates a player-driven route to equipment and a reason to monitor the economy.
  • Progress is tied to raids, stash value and tactical knowledge; the game does not offer HUNGER-style named mastery trees and professions.

HUNGER: mastery through a Living

  • Quests and storylines are intended to be the backbone of advancement.
  • More than 100 mastery talents, character abilities and professions let two players use different solutions to the same Expedition.
  • Gathering and crafting turn resources into a second progression route alongside combat.
  • Most cosmetics are advertised as earnable in-game rather than locked behind a paid battle pass.

HUNGER’s “extraction RPG” label comes from this design choice. CEO and game director Maximilian Rea has said the aim is to use an extraction loop the way Diablo uses a run loop: as the structure around a multiplayer, first-person RPG rather than as the entire identity of the game.

How do PvE and co-op differ?

If you want a complete AI-only product now, Tarkov has the clearer answer. HUNGER’s co-op and PvE ambitions are substantial, but they belong to its Early Access plan.

Tarkov PvE Zone is available now

The $29.99 PvE Zone add-on provides an AI-only version with its own character and economy. Patch 1.2.0.0 reworked PMC bot behavior, added PvE Prestige and introduced EXFIL Brothers, which pairs experienced players with newer ones. The Standard Edition does not include PvE, so a player who wants both PvP and PvE should budget about $80 at the US Steam prices checked in October 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HUNGER plans dungeons and bosses

HUNGER’s Steam feature list includes endgame dungeons and boss fights, and the studio describes distinct PvP and PvE endgame paths. Those systems are part of the planned Early Access scope rather than a separate mode you can purchase today. The basic Expedition loop already supports solo, duo and trio play, but the final matchmaking and PvE structure may change during the estimated two-year Early Access period.

How long is a session, and what do you do in it?

A Tarkov raid is a preparation exercise followed by a high-consequence map run. You choose a PMC, insure or risk equipment, load ammunition and medical supplies, enter one of more than a dozen maps, search containers and defeated enemies, fight Scavs and PMCs, and reach an extraction point. Failing to extract can erase the value of the kit you brought, while successful extraction feeds the stash and trader economy.

HUNGER calls its runs Expeditions. From the Chateau, you select a Living, equip weapons, medicines, tools and trinkets, accept or pursue quests, then enter forests, villages, monasteries, citadels or mines. The director told IGN in 2025 that the low end of a meaningful session could be about 30–35 minutes and that an hour should move a character forward; those are design goals from a preview, not a guaranteed timer. Proximity voice chat, a hub marketplace and professions add social and economic activity around each Expedition.

What PC, language and anti-cheat requirements matter?

Tarkov publishes unusually demanding recommended hardware. HUNGER’s Steam listing still marks its CPU, GPU, memory and storage requirements as to be confirmed, so do not buy a PC for it based on Tarkov’s numbers.

Requirement Escape from Tarkov HUNGER
Minimum operating system Windows 10 Windows listing; detailed requirements TBC
Minimum processor AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or similar TBC
Minimum memory 16 GB RAM TBC
Recommended processor Intel Core i7-14700F or better TBC

Both games require an online connection for their multiplayer ecosystems. Tarkov’s BattlEye installation also requires manual removal after uninstalling, according to the game’s cited anti-cheat information. HUNGER’s Early Access listing includes online PvP, online co-op and proximity voice chat.

Which game is easier for a beginner?

Neither is a truly gentle first extraction game, but they challenge beginners in different ways.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Tarkov is difficult

  • Maps, extracts, ammunition penetration and medical treatment are largely learned through failure and external reference material.
  • There is little conventional shooter feedback: no minimap, hit marker or kill feed.
  • A single mistake can cost a kit that took multiple raids or purchases to assemble.
  • Squad communication helps, but an official PMC squad-size cap was not stated on the cited Steam page, so do not assume a fixed party limit.

Why HUNGER may be more readable but not easy

  • Quests, named NPCs, a hub and visible talent trees provide clearer goals than Tarkov’s mostly systems-driven progression.
  • Character levels and talents should make improvement visible even after a death, because experience is retained.
  • Closed-beta feedback still identified sluggish movement, power gaps and inconsistent performance, so “RPG-readable” does not mean low difficulty.
  • Slow reloads, melee timing, sound attraction and rival players can make a bad engagement just as costly as a Tarkov raid.

If you are new to extraction games and want a lower-friction starting point, consider ARC Raiders, which is designed for a broader audience and supports consoles, or free options such as Delta Force and Arena Breakout: Infinite. That is an alternative path, not evidence that either HUNGER or Tarkov is defective.

Who should choose Escape from Tarkov?

  • You want to play tonight. Tarkov is the only one of these two with a finished, purchasable release in October 2026.
  • You want modern firearms. Its ammunition, armor, injury and weapon systems are the genre’s most detailed benchmark.
  • You want a ready-made PvE mode. The PvE Zone is available as a defined add-on rather than a roadmap promise.
  • You enjoy inventory and economy management. Traders, reputation, the Flea Market and stash optimization are central, not side activities.
  • You can tolerate a steep learning curve and high loss. The game rewards long-term map and system knowledge but does not protect a valuable kit from a bad raid.
  • Your PC is strong enough. The official recommendation of 64 GB RAM and an RTX 4070-class GPU is unusually high.

Who should wait for or wishlist HUNGER?

  • You want a character to keep building. The design retains experience after death and promises no forced wipes.
  • You prefer historical horror to military simulation. Flintlocks, melee, plague monsters and a Napoleonic setting define the tone.
  • You want quests, professions and abilities. The Chateau and Living progression are intended to be the main long-term spine.
  • You mostly play solo, duo or trio. Those are the announced Expedition formats, with proximity voice chat for social encounters.
  • You can accept Early Access uncertainty. The exact date, price, hardware requirements, final map roster and open-beta date remain unannounced.
  • You are comfortable with English-only support at launch. Steam currently lists English interface, audio and subtitles only.

What risks should you understand before buying?

Tarkov’s risk is immediate and mechanical: the game is available, but its demanding simulation, high hardware bar and Mixed Steam reception mean the purchase does not guarantee an easy onboarding experience. The optional PvE Zone also raises the cost if AI-only play is your priority.

HUNGER’s risk is developmental. The studio estimates two years of Early Access, plans to raise the price as features arrive and is still changing movement, balance, audio, vendors and reconnect behavior after the beta. The no-forced-wipe promise is attractive, but it does not guarantee that every balance change will leave an existing build equally powerful. Wishlist it if the concept appeals to you; do not treat an announced feature as a shipped mode.

How should you make the decision?

  1. Decide whether you need a game now. If yes, choose Tarkov; HUNGER has no confirmed purchase date in the cited Steam listing.
  2. Choose your combat fantasy. Select Tarkov for modern rifles and medical simulation. Select HUNGER for flintlocks, melee and horror.
  3. Choose what should survive death. Tarkov emphasizes equipment and economy, with optional seasonal resets. HUNGER emphasizes the Living’s level, talents and professions.
  4. Decide whether PvE must be complete today. Buy Tarkov’s PvE Zone if AI-only play is non-negotiable. Wait for HUNGER if planned dungeons and bosses are enough for now.
  5. Check your hardware and language needs. Tarkov publishes a high but concrete specification; HUNGER’s remains TBC and its current listing is English-only.
  6. Set your tolerance for development change. Tarkov is a live 1.0 service with seasonal options. HUNGER is an Early Access project whose price, balance and content will evolve.

How we picked

This comparison uses the decision points that materially change a purchase: whether the game is playable now, combat model, progression after death, wipe policy, PvE availability, party formats, session structure, hardware requirements, language support and price clarity. It separates official Steam statements from dated preview targets and from beta impressions, and it does not treat planned HUNGER features as current equivalents to Tarkov modes.

Can I play HUNGER on Steam Deck?

Steam Deck compatibility is listed as unknown. Because HUNGER’s CPU and GPU requirements are also still TBC, there is not enough official information to predict a reliable handheld experience.

What happens to Tarkov’s seasonal character after a reset?

Seasonal progression is automatically reset every four to six months when a major content update starts a new season. Seasonal characters are kept on separate servers from persistent PvP Zone and PvE Zone characters, so choosing seasonal play does not reset those other characters.

Will HUNGER’s Early Access price stay the same?

The studio says it plans to raise the price gradually as it ships new content and features. Since Steam had not posted a launch dollar figure in October 2026, there is no confirmed early-buyer price to lock in.
