There is no reliable all-purpose winner. Generative AI can produce many candidate ideas quickly and can outperform people on some narrowly defined divergent-thinking, convergent-thinking, or insight tasks. Other tests find humans slightly ahead on average, with more exceptional high performers, while AI can lag in creative writing, associative thinking, or choosing the strongest idea. A creative-looking output also does not prove that a system understands your audience, values, constraints, or consequences. The practical answer is to assign AI a specific role—brainstorming partner, critic, or first-draft engine—and keep human judgment responsible for meaning, appropriateness, originality, and final selection.
Is AI more creative than humans?
No. Current evidence does not support a single ranking across every creative activity. Results change with the task, the model version, the prompt, the scoring method, and the person using the system.
“Creativity” can mean generating numerous possibilities, making a surprising connection, solving a constrained problem, writing an emotionally convincing story, developing a useful product concept, or deciding which idea matters to a particular community. A system may score well on one of those dimensions and poorly on another. Human performance is also uneven: average scores can hide a small group of unusually original people.

What counts as creativity in these comparisons?
Before comparing a person with a model, identify which outcome is being measured. These categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
| Dimension | What is measured | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| Idea fluency | How many usable or distinct ideas are produced in a set time | A system that generates 100 options may be useful even if only a few survive review. |
| Originality or novelty | How uncommon an idea is relative to other responses | Novelty can reward surprising combinations without showing that an idea is useful or appropriate. |
| Convergent problem solving | Whether the solver reaches a correct answer under defined constraints | Success here is closer to problem solving than to open-ended artistic authorship. |
| Insight and representational change | Whether the solver reframes a problem or notices a hidden relationship | A correct final answer does not reveal which mental process produced it. |
| Creative process | Planning, association, experimentation, revision, and selecting among possibilities | An output can look creative while the underlying process remains limited or opaque. |
| Meaning and value | Whether an idea fits a community, purpose, ethics, and lived situation | These judgments require context that a score based only on novelty cannot capture. |
Because tests emphasize different dimensions, two apparently contradictory findings can both be accurate. A model may be competitive on an ideation score while a human editor is better at recognizing the one proposal that will work for a specific audience.
What do head-to-head studies actually show?
Recent studies show a mixed, task-dependent pattern rather than a general AI advantage.

A 2026 comparison of models and people
A study in Thinking Skills and Creativity compared GPT-3.5-turbo, GPT-4, GPT-4o, and human participants using several output and process measures. In the instruments used, the models outperformed the human participants on divergent thinking, convergent thinking, and insight problem-solving. They underperformed on creative writing, and scored lower on measured associative thinking and representational change. The models also had difficulty identifying which of their own ideas were the most creative.
Those are results for the study’s particular prompts, scoring rules, participants, and model versions. They do not establish that any current or future model is globally more creative than people. They do show why “the answer looked creative” and “the system performed every creative process well” must be treated as separate claims.
Large-scale divergent-creativity experiment
Wang and colleagues, in a 2026 Nature Human Behaviour study, compared 9,198 human participants with 215,542 observations from large language models on a divergent-creativity task. Humans were slightly higher on average and showed greater variability, including stronger performance in the right-hand tail. The counts describe that experiment’s participants and model observations; they are not a census of human creativity or a universal score for language models.
Meta-analysis of idea-generation studies
A 2025 meta-analysis by de Rooij and Biskjaer covered 17 studies and 115 effect sizes. Its pooled estimate slightly favored ideas produced with prompted generative AI, but the confidence interval included zero and the studies were substantially heterogeneous. In statistical terms, the analysis did not find a significant overall advantage for AI in the tested idea-generation tasks. A non-significant result is not proof that humans and AI are equivalent: the tasks, prompts, participant groups, and comparison conditions differed.
Why the findings do not conflict
- One experiment can test insight puzzles while another tests writing or unusual-object uses.
- Average performance and top-end performance answer different questions.
- Prompt wording, time limits, model settings, and whether people may revise their answers can change the result.
- Ratings of a finished artifact cannot reveal whether the creator understood its implications or could explain its choices.
Where can generative AI improve creative work?
AI is most useful when the bottleneck is producing or transforming possibilities and a knowledgeable person can judge them.

Rapid divergence
A model can return many variations on a brief: alternate headlines, product names, plot turns, layouts, metaphors, lesson activities, or hypotheses. This reduces the time needed to move from a blank page to a menu of directions. Quantity is not quality, so the gain comes from giving a human more options to inspect, combine, or discard.
Exploring a design space
You can ask for deliberately different constraints—short versus expansive copy, conservative versus unusual visual concepts, or solutions optimized for cost versus accessibility. Explicitly varying constraints is more productive than repeatedly asking for “more creative” output.
First-pass transformation
AI can reorganize notes, propose an outline, convert a rough explanation into several reading levels, or identify gaps in a draft. Treat the result as editable material. Verify facts, restore your voice, and remove details that were introduced without evidence.
Challenge and critique
After you have a concept, a model can act as a skeptical reviewer: list assumptions, identify audiences who may be excluded, or suggest failure cases. Asking for criticism after stating your own criteria keeps the human decision-maker in control.
Reducing routine cognitive load
In writing, design, and product ideation, a review in Current Opinion in Psychology describes potential gains in idea quantity and quality, speed, and cognitive load. These are possibilities, not guaranteed outcomes; the review emphasizes that timing, interaction design, task demands, and user expertise moderate the effect.
What remains distinctly human in creative work?
It is too strong to claim that AI can never perform any human-associated activity. A better distinction is between producing a plausible artifact and taking responsibility for why it should exist.
Situated understanding
People experience the social, cultural, physical, and organizational setting in which an idea will be used. They can notice an unspoken concern, a local reference that will offend, or a practical constraint absent from the prompt. A model can be asked to simulate such perspectives, but a responsible person must check whether the simulation fits reality.

Choosing a goal is not the same as optimizing a prompt. A team must decide whose needs take priority, which trade-offs are acceptable, and what consequences would make an otherwise effective idea unacceptable. Those are normative decisions, not merely style choices.

Selection and commitment
When dozens of suggestions are plausible, the difficult work may be deciding which one deserves time, budget, and public ownership. The 2026 model comparison’s difficulty with selecting the most creative ideas illustrates this gap between generating candidates and evaluating them.
Personal voice and lived meaning
An autobiographical essay, a community campaign, or an artistic statement can depend on experiences the author is accountable for. AI can help with structure or alternatives, but the person whose name and reputation are attached to the work must decide what is authentic to say.
Can using AI make ideas less original?
It can, especially when many people receive similar suggestions and accept the first plausible answer. The risk is documented as a possible collaboration cost, not an inevitable result.

Homogenization
Similar prompts can yield similar wording, concepts, or visual conventions. The OECD’s education report warns that generative AI may support creative skills while also producing similar suggestions that reduce collective originality. That observation is specific to education contexts; it should not be treated as a measured outcome in every profession.
Reduced ownership and engagement
The 2026 review of creative collaboration identifies possible declines in authenticity, ownership, independent creative engagement, and team collaboration. If a person delegates framing, experimentation, and evaluation, they may have less understanding of—and less attachment to—the final result.
Ways to preserve independent thinking
- Write your own goal, audience, constraints, and initial ideas before opening the AI tool.
- Ask for alternatives that challenge your assumptions rather than asking for a finished answer.
- Require yourself or your team to explain why each adopted element meets a stated criterion.
- Combine selected suggestions with original observations, experiments, or references from the real context.
- Record substantial AI contributions when your organization, client, school, or publisher requires disclosure.
This sequence is a practical safeguard informed by concerns about timing and autonomy. It is not a proven best workflow for every person or medium.
How should you decide when to use AI?
Evaluate four questions before choosing a tool or workflow.
1. What is the task, and what does “good” mean?
For high-volume exploration, speed may matter most. For a personal narrative, “good” may mean a distinctive voice and truthful experience. For a safety-critical recommendation, appropriateness and accountability outrank novelty.

2. When should AI enter?
Early use can expand the option space but may anchor you on conventional suggestions. Later use can provide critique or polish while preserving your initial framing. Decide deliberately rather than inserting AI automatically at the first blank page.
3. What interaction will force useful human judgment?
Prompts that ask for ranked options, assumptions, counterarguments, or explicit trade-offs create review work. A one-click request for a final deliverable encourages passive acceptance.
4. Can the user evaluate the output?
Expertise changes the balance. A subject-matter expert can catch subtle errors and adapt an idea; a novice may mistake fluent language for accuracy and originality. The OECD’s 2025 review of productivity, innovation, and entrepreneurship likewise concludes that effectiveness depends on the task and the user’s experience, while noting evidence gaps about long-term business effects and whether workers understand AI limits.
| Situation | Useful AI role | Human responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Many directions are needed quickly | Generate, cluster, and vary candidate ideas | Set constraints and select what merits development |
| You have a draft but need alternatives | Suggest reframes, structures, or counterarguments | Protect voice, accuracy, and intent |
| The work is deeply personal or culturally situated | Offer optional editing or questions | Author meaning and decide what is authentic |
| High-stakes or regulated decision | Assist with options or checklists only where permitted | Apply professional standards and make the accountable decision |
| The user cannot verify specialist claims | Limit use or keep it to low-risk ideation | Obtain qualified review before relying on output |
What workflow balances speed with originality?
The following process makes AI a contributor without handing it the creative brief.
- Frame the objective. Write the audience, desired effect, non-negotiable constraints, ethical boundaries, and evaluation criteria in your own words.
- Make a first pass unaided. Sketch at least one approach, even if it is rough. This gives you a reference point and reduces anchoring on the model’s default ideas.
- Request structured divergence. Ask for several genuinely different directions, each with assumptions, benefits, risks, and the audience it serves. Avoid vague requests for maximum creativity.
- Interrogate the candidates. Ask what could fail, who might object, what evidence is missing, and which constraints each idea violates.
- Evaluate against human-defined criteria. Score usefulness, fit, originality for this audience, feasibility, and potential harm. Do not let the model silently change the scoring rules.
- Develop and test one direction. Add observations, user feedback, prototypes, or domain evidence. At this stage, the work should become specific to your situation rather than remain generic.
- Audit the final artifact. Check factual claims, permissions, privacy, accessibility, cultural implications, and whether the result still expresses the intended voice.
- Document material assistance. Keep prompts or a short contribution note when transparency is expected by a client, school, employer, or publisher.
What do scientific and policy reports add to the picture?
Broader reports reinforce the need to qualify claims by field and purpose.
Scientific creativity across fields
A 2025 European Commission working document examined AI and scientific creativity across 80 fields from 2000 to 2022. Its summary describes overall increases in measured novelty and impact, but strong variation: some fields showed little improvement or negative effects. This is evidence about scientific research patterns, not a direct contest between humans and AI in every creative profession.
Education and skill development
The OECD report Reimagining Teaching in an Accelerating World states: “GenAI can be used to support the creative process and the acquisition of creative skills.” The same discussion cautions that similar prompts can lead to similar suggestions and may reduce collective originality. In a classroom, the teacher’s design of the activity and the learner’s independent effort therefore matter as much as the tool’s output.
Productivity and innovation
The OECD review by Calvino, Reijerink, and Samek links outcomes to task and user experience and highlights open questions about trust, human expertise, long-term business effects, and workers’ understanding of AI limitations. A productivity gain in one workflow should not be presented as proof of greater creativity in another.

Novelty is not value
The UNDP Human Development Report 2025 frames creativity through novelty, surprise, and value: “Creativity involves novelty, surprise and value—even if AI can help with the first two features, value will always be up to us to determine.” This is a conceptual policy argument, not a measured law of machine capability, but it captures the practical test: an unusual output matters only if it serves a worthwhile purpose in context.
How can teams evaluate an AI-assisted idea?
Use a review sheet that separates observable qualities from assumptions about how the idea was produced.
- Fit: Does it solve the stated problem for the actual audience?
- Distinctiveness: Is it meaningfully different from familiar solutions, or merely fluent variation?
- Evidence: Which factual, technical, or user claims need independent verification?
- Feasibility: Can the team deliver it with available skills, time, budget, and permissions?
- Human value: Does it respect people affected by the work and support the intended outcome?
- Voice and ownership: Can the responsible creator explain and stand behind the choices?
- Risk: Could the idea cause privacy, safety, legal, cultural, or reputational harm?
Have at least one reviewer who understands the domain and one who represents the intended audience when the stakes justify it. A polished response should enter this process as a proposal, not as evidence that the proposal is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat are the main limitations of current evidence?
Model versions change quickly, and creative tasks lack one universally accepted scoring system. Laboratory prompts may not resemble months-long collaboration, professional commissioning, or public use. Studies also differ in whether people receive practice, feedback, tools, or permission to revise. For those reasons, apply a finding to the task and conditions that produced it, and revisit decisions as models and independent evaluations change.
Most importantly, a score for novelty or fluency cannot settle questions of responsibility, cultural meaning, or long-term effects on people’s skills. Those questions require explicit human policies and observation in the setting where the work will be used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can generative AI create an original idea without a human prompt?
A model can produce an unrequested variation when it is run, but “original” depends on comparison, context, and value. The available studies test prompted interactions or defined tasks; they do not establish independent intention or a universal standard of originality.
Should students use AI for brainstorming assignments?
It can be appropriate when the instructor permits it and the student remains responsible for framing, checking, and revising the work. Because similar prompts may yield similar suggestions, students should keep an unaided idea log and explain which suggestions they adopted and why.
Recommended Free Tools
How can I tell whether an AI-generated concept is genuinely useful?
Test it with the people, constraints, and evidence that define the real problem. A small prototype, user interview, or domain review is more informative than fluency, novelty scores, or the model’s confidence.
Does a better model remove the need for human creative judgment?
No. A newer model may improve performance on particular benchmarks while still producing errors, generic patterns, or poor prioritization. Human evaluation remains necessary wherever context, values, accountability, or selection among plausible options determines success.
