To keep Hindi text intact when converting a website to PDF, make sure the page uses Unicode Hindi, the PDF renderer can access a font with Devanagari glyphs, and that font has finished loading before conversion. Then inspect the generated PDF to confirm the font is embedded or subsetted—and visually check conjuncts and vowel marks. Font embedding helps readers see the intended typeface on devices without it; it does not prove that Devanagari was shaped correctly.
Why Hindi fonts go wrong in PDFs
PDF conversion involves separate steps: the renderer must obtain a suitable font, shape Hindi text with that font, and include enough font data in the PDF for the document to display elsewhere. A failure at any step can produce substituted type, missing glyphs, altered line breaks, or incorrectly positioned marks.
- Font unavailable: The page requests a font that the renderer cannot fetch or does not have installed, so it may substitute another face.
- Font not loaded in time: Conversion starts before a web font finishes loading, leaving the renderer to use a fallback.
- Shaping problem: The font may be present, but the rendering pipeline may not handle Devanagari conjuncts or mark placement as expected.
- Font not embedded: The PDF may depend on a font installed on the creator’s device, so another reader’s software substitutes a different one.
- Source text or encoding issue: If the page’s Hindi is not Unicode text, the problem may begin before conversion. Resolve the source text rather than assuming a different PDF setting will fix it.
These are distinct checks: a PDF can embed a font and still display poorly shaped Hindi.
A reliable workflow for Hindi website PDFs
- Check the source text. Confirm that Hindi content is Unicode. If the source uses a legacy encoding or font-specific glyph mapping, address that at the source; the exact conversion process depends on the encoding and is not covered by the sources cited here.
- Identify the font actually used for Hindi. Verify that it has Devanagari coverage. Noto Sans Devanagari is one example cited in a converter’s implementation description, but the name alone does not guarantee the font is available to your chosen renderer.
- Make the font available to the renderer. Check whether the converter’s environment includes the font or supports loading a custom one. If it supports web fonts, ensure the font URL is reachable from the conversion service and follow that product’s documented requirements. For example, Ironfang says its service includes Noto families and requires other fonts to be loaded through an absolute address; for pasted HTML without a base URL, it specifies absolute HTTPS addresses or data URIs. - Wait for fonts before converting. Use the conversion product’s documented font-loading or wait mechanism. There is no single wait setting established here that applies to every renderer.
- Generate the PDF, then inspect its fonts. In Acrobat, open Document Properties and check the Fonts tab for the intended font and whether it is embedded or embedded subset. - Review the Hindi visually. Check representative text at normal reading size and at higher zoom. Look for missing characters, broken conjuncts, half forms, reph, and misplaced vowel marks. A font listing cannot replace this review.
- Consider editing needs. A subset contains only the font data needed for characters used in the PDF, which is often sufficient for reading. If someone will later edit the PDF and add characters absent from the original, investigate full-font embedding and the converter’s settings. Font permissions can restrict embedding.
What to compare when choosing a converter
Do not assume that a converter’s ability to produce PDFs means it will render Hindi correctly. Compare the actual font and rendering requirements that matter to your page.

Troubleshooting common Hindi PDF problems
The PDF shows a different-looking font
Check the PDF’s Fonts tab to see whether the intended font is embedded. If it is absent or substituted, verify that the renderer could access the font when it generated the PDF; a CSS font-family declaration by itself does not prove that the font loaded.

Some Hindi characters are missing
Confirm that the selected font covers Devanagari and that the source text is Unicode. Then check whether the PDF has the expected embedded font. If those checks pass, investigate the renderer’s shaping support and compare the PDF with the source page.
Conjuncts or vowel marks look misplaced
Treat this as a shaping or rendering issue, even if the font is listed as embedded. Check the selected font and converter’s documented handling of Devanagari, then inspect the PDF at multiple zoom levels. Font embedding alone cannot confirm correct shaping.

Line breaks or page layout changed
A fallback font can have different metrics and change wrapping. Confirm which font was actually used and whether it had loaded before conversion. Also compare the page at the same viewport and rendering conditions, if the converter exposes those controls.
The PDF looks right on one device but wrong on another
Inspect whether the font is embedded or subsetted. Without suitable embedded font data, the receiving device may substitute its own font. If the font is embedded, inspect the affected Hindi visually and consider whether the issue is shaping rather than substitution.
