An HTML sitemap is a normal, indexable web page that groups links to the important parts of your site for people to browse. Build one with a clear heading hierarchy, descriptive link text, canonical URLs, semantic HTML, and a permanent link in the site footer. Keep a small, stable sitemap by hand; generate it from your CMS or content database when pages change frequently.

An HTML sitemap can give visitors a useful alternative to menus, search, and breadcrumbs, and it can expose internal links that help crawlers discover URLs. It is not a substitute for navigation or an XML sitemap, and it cannot guarantee crawling, indexing, rankings, or traffic.

What is an HTML sitemap?

An HTML sitemap is a visitor-facing page that presents a structured map of a website as ordinary HTML links. Unlike a browser’s technical index, it should reflect the site’s information architecture: products or services, resources, support, company information, and other meaningful groups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page normally has a unique title, one clear <h1>, section headings, lists, and links to stable destination pages. A visitor can scan it to understand what the site contains or reach a page that is several clicks away from the primary navigation. A crawler can also follow those ordinary links.

Think of the sitemap as a secondary navigation route. It should make the site’s structure clearer, not become a dumping ground for every URL the server can generate.

What is the difference between an HTML sitemap and an XML sitemap?

HTML and XML sitemaps serve different audiences and can be used together. An HTML page is designed for people; an XML or text sitemap is a machine-readable URL file used to provide discovery information to search engines.

Characteristic HTML sitemap XML or text sitemap
Primary audience Visitors, keyboard users, and screen-reader users Search-engine systems and other crawlers
Format Indexable HTML with headings, lists, and links XML or plain text following the Sitemaps protocol
Main job Provide an understandable overview and another internal-link path Submit or expose large sets of canonical URLs and optional metadata
Where it is found Through normal links, commonly in the site footer Search Console, a Sitemap: directive in robots.txt, or other supported submission methods
Practical scale Limited by readability and maintenance; split by category when necessary Each file can contain up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed; use an index for more files

Google describes a sitemap as a file that provides information about pages and other files, but its documentation primarily covers XML, RSS/Atom, and text formats. The Sitemaps protocol specifies UTF-8 encoding, entity escaping, fully qualified URLs, and the 50,000-URL/50 MB limits for protocol sitemap files. Those formal limits should not be treated as a target for a visible HTML page; usability is the deciding constraint.

Use both when they solve different problems: an HTML page for people and internal links, plus an XML or text sitemap for machine-readable discovery. Neither format guarantees that every listed URL will be crawled or indexed.

How do I create an HTML sitemap?

Start with the pages that matter to visitors, organize them into real sections, publish the page with accessible semantic markup, and then connect it to the rest of the site. The following workflow works for a hand-built page, a CMS template, or an automated generator.

1. Inventory the site’s important URLs

Export or list the pages that belong to the site’s intended information architecture. Include primary product, service, category, resource, support, company, legal, and evergreen guide pages that a visitor may reasonably need.

For each candidate, record:

  • The final URL after redirects.
  • The canonical URL when the same content has more than one address.
  • The page’s human-readable name.
  • The category in which a visitor would expect to find it.
  • Whether the page is live, useful, and available to the intended audience.

Google recommends selecting the canonical URL when equivalent content is available at multiple URLs. Its sitemap documentation also cautions that a sitemap is a discovery aid, not a guarantee of crawling or indexing.

2. Design groups that match the information architecture

Group links under headings such as Products, Services, Resources, Support, Company, and Legal only when those labels match the site’s actual structure. A category should answer a visitor’s question, not exist merely to repeat a keyword.

Keep groups short enough to scan. If a large site has hundreds of resource pages, create an index that links to category-specific sitemap pages rather than one flat wall of links. Each category page should still have a clear purpose and should not contain duplicate or parameterized URL variants.

3. Give the page a useful title and heading

Use a unique HTML title that describes the page, for example Browse the Acme site | Acme, and a visible heading such as Browse our site or Sitemap. Titles support discoverability and are announced early by assistive technology; the visible heading tells a visitor immediately what the page is for.

Place the content in a meaningful <main> region. A navigation landmark with an accessible label helps users identify the sitemap as a distinct navigation area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Use semantic HTML and descriptive links

Use headings for hierarchy, unordered lists for collections of links, and ordinary anchor elements for destinations. Link text should make sense when read on its own. “Web accessibility checklist” communicates more than “Read more” or “Click here,” especially when a screen-reader user navigates a list of links out of context.

<main>
  <h1>Browse our site</h1>
  <nav aria-label="Site map">
    <section>
      <h2>Resources</h2>
      <ul>
        <li><a href="/guides/">Practical technology guides</a></li>
        <li><a href="/accessibility/">Web accessibility resources</a></li>
      </ul>
    </section>
    <section>
      <h2>Support</h2>
      <ul>
        <li><a href="/help/">Help centre</a></li>
        <li><a href="/contact/">Contact support</a></li>
      </ul>
    </section>
  </nav>
</main>

The exact element choices can vary, but the principles are stable: meaningful regions, logical headings, real links, and labels that communicate destination and purpose. The W3C WAI page-structure tutorial explains how well-structured content supports more efficient navigation and processing.

5. Choose a maintenance method

Manual page: For a small, stable site, edit a CMS page or template directly. Google says manual creation is practical when a sitemap has fewer than a few dozen URLs. Assign an owner and update the page whenever a URL or category changes.

CMS-managed page: Check whether the CMS or an extension can generate an HTML sitemap. Keep editorial control over the section order, labels, exclusions, and canonical destinations even when the URL list is automatic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Database or taxonomy generation: For a large or frequently changing site, generate the page from published content and the site’s taxonomy. Filter out non-public, duplicate, redirected, and obsolete records before rendering. Google’s guidance recommends automatic generation for larger sitemap files because the site’s own software is generally the best source of URL data.

6. Link to it from a consistent location

Put a clearly labeled Sitemap link in the global footer so it is available from every page. A footer link is predictable for visitors and gives crawlers a normal internal path to the page. You can also include it in a help or accessibility hub if that fits the site’s navigation, but do not hide the only link behind a temporary campaign page.

7. Check the finished page

Before publishing, open the page as a visitor and verify that:

  • Every link resolves to the intended final page with the expected HTTP status.
  • Redirected URLs have been replaced by their final canonical destinations.
  • No duplicate links, tracking-parameter variants, or internal-search URLs remain.
  • Headings follow a logical order and identify each group.
  • Links are reachable by keyboard and have a visible focus style.
  • The page remains understandable when color, hover effects, or layout position are unavailable.
  • The sitemap link appears in the site-wide footer.

What should an HTML sitemap include?

Include canonical, stable pages that support the site’s goals and that a visitor may reasonably want to discover. The sitemap is most useful when it represents the intended site hierarchy rather than every URL produced by a CMS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good candidates

  • Primary products, services, and categories.
  • Important evergreen guides, documentation, and resource hubs.
  • Support, contact, company, privacy, terms, and other public utility pages.
  • Landing pages that are part of the site’s planned information architecture.
  • Stable pages that return the intended content without an unnecessary redirect.

Usually exclude

  • Duplicate URLs for the same content.
  • Tracking-parameter versions such as campaign-tagged links.
  • Internal search-result pages.
  • Login, account, cart, checkout, and other private or transactional URLs.
  • Faceted filters that create large numbers of near-duplicate combinations.
  • Thin, obsolete, deleted, broken, or permanently redirected destinations.

Overly complex URL patterns and unnecessary parameters can create excessive URL variations and indexing problems. Prefer readable URLs with descriptive words separated by hyphens, and use canonical tags to identify the preferred address. An HTML sitemap should reinforce those signals, not multiply the variants.

How do I make an HTML sitemap accessible?

Accessibility comes from the page’s structure and interaction, not from a special sitemap widget. Use meaningful regions, a logical heading hierarchy, descriptive links, keyboard access, and consistent navigation.

  • Use one clear H1 and nested headings: Do not skip levels merely to make text look smaller. Style headings with CSS instead.
  • Identify the navigation: Use a nav landmark with an accessible label such as “Site map” when the page contains more than one navigation region.
  • Write unique, useful link text: A visitor should understand the destination without relying on nearby visual placement.
  • Keep links keyboard reachable: Use standard anchors, preserve visible focus indicators, and test tab order.
  • Do not rely on color or hover: Meaning and grouping must remain clear in high contrast, zoomed, or touch contexts.
  • Keep the links in the HTML: Do not hide the entire sitemap behind a client-side interaction that prevents basic discovery or keyboard use.

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative guidance explains why meaningful regions and headings help screen-reader users navigate important sections and help keyboard users move through a page efficiently.

Do HTML sitemaps help SEO?

They can support URL discovery and internal linking, but the evidence does not support a promised ranking increase. An HTML sitemap gives crawlers another set of ordinary links to important pages, which may be useful when a site is new, large, or difficult to navigate. It also makes the site’s intended structure more explicit to people.

Google’s exact qualification is important: “A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs on your site, but it doesn’t guarantee that all the items in your sitemap will be crawled and indexed.” The same caution applies to an HTML sitemap. A page in the list can still be ignored because it is low quality, duplicate, blocked, unavailable, or not considered useful enough to index.

Do not use an HTML sitemap as a replacement for contextual internal links, breadcrumbs, category pages, or a clear primary menu. Those systems explain relationships between related pages; a sitemap is a broad overview. Also avoid stuffing it with keyword variations or links to pages that should not be public.

Google notes that a site of about 500 pages or fewer may not need a sitemap when important pages are comprehensively linked and the site has little special media or news content. That observation is about whether a sitemap is necessary, not a prohibition on publishing a useful visitor-facing page.

Where should I put the HTML sitemap link?

Put it in the global footer using a consistent label such as “Sitemap.” The footer is a conventional, site-wide location that visitors can find without learning a new interface, and it creates an ordinary internal link from many pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not put the page only in robots.txt; that file is for crawler directives and sitemap-file references, not a visitor navigation surface. If you also publish an XML sitemap, reference that machine-readable file in robots.txt with a fully specified URL or submit it through the supported search-engine tools. Keep the HTML page, XML file, canonical tags, redirects, and internal links aligned when URLs change.

How should I maintain an HTML sitemap on a large site?

Use automation for URL collection, but retain editorial rules for what appears and how it is labeled. A reliable publishing workflow has three layers.

  1. Generate candidates: Read published, public records from the CMS or database and map them to taxonomy groups.
  2. Apply URL rules: Keep canonical, stable destinations; remove duplicates, parameters, private pages, broken records, and redirects.
  3. Render and review: Output semantic HTML, then run scheduled checks for status codes, canonical destinations, duplicate links, missing categories, orphaned important pages, stale content, and heading or link-label problems.

Trigger a review whenever content is renamed, removed, merged, or reorganized. A monthly check is a useful minimum for a changing site, while high-volume publishing may justify a check on every deployment. When the visible page becomes too long, use a sitemap index page that links to category-specific pages. There is no requirement to force the XML protocol’s 50,000-URL limit onto those HTML pages; readability and maintenance determine the split.

What are the most common HTML sitemap mistakes?

  1. Confusing HTML with XML: An HTML sitemap is a web page for people. Do not describe it as an XML protocol file or imply that it is submitted in the same way.
  2. Listing every URL: Duplicates, filters, parameters, private pages, and obsolete destinations make the page harder to use and can create crawler traps.
  3. Using vague labels: “Click here” and repeated “Read more” links are difficult to interpret out of context.
  4. Replacing navigation: A sitemap cannot explain page relationships as well as contextual links, breadcrumbs, and primary navigation.
  5. Ignoring accessibility: A visual grid without headings, landmarks, focus styles, or keyboard access excludes users.
  6. Hiding links behind scripts: If the links are not present in usable HTML, visitors and crawlers may not get the intended path.
  7. Leaving the page unmaintained: A deleted or redirected destination signals that the sitemap no longer reflects the site.
  8. Promising SEO results: Discovery support is defensible; guaranteed indexing, rankings, or traffic is not.

Can a simple static site use a hand-built sitemap?

Yes. A small static site can maintain one HTML page in its source repository or CMS. Create a short inventory, group links under the same labels used in the main navigation, add the page to the footer, and update it in the same change that adds, removes, or renames a page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a site with only a few dozen stable URLs, this approach is often easier to audit than introducing a generator. Add a link-checking step to the deployment process if the site grows or content begins changing frequently.

When should a site split its HTML sitemap into multiple pages?

Split it when a single page is difficult to scan, when sections have distinct audiences, or when maintaining one list causes frequent conflicts. Use an index page such as “Browse the site,” then link to focused pages like “Products,” “Resources,” and “Support.”

Each child page should still use a clear H1, logical headings, descriptive links, and canonical destinations. Avoid splitting solely to create more indexable pages; the split should improve navigation and maintenance.

HTML sitemap launch checklist

  • There is a unique, descriptive HTML title and one visible H1.
  • The content sits in a meaningful main region and uses a labeled navigation landmark where appropriate.
  • Links are grouped by the real information architecture.
  • Link labels describe destinations without “click here” wording.
  • Only canonical, public, useful, stable URLs are listed.
  • Private, duplicate, parameterized, thin, broken, and obsolete URLs are excluded.
  • Every link works, and redirects have been replaced by final URLs.
  • All links are keyboard reachable with visible focus.
  • The page is linked from the global footer.
  • The maintenance owner and review trigger are documented.
  • An XML or text sitemap is maintained separately when machine-readable submission is needed.
  • Claims about SEO are limited to discovery and navigation support, not guaranteed indexing or rankings.

A good HTML sitemap is deliberately modest: a clear, accessible map of the pages people should be able to find. Build it around canonical URLs and real categories, keep it connected through the footer, and maintain it as part of normal content operations. That gives visitors a dependable fallback and search engines an additional internal-link path without pretending that a sitemap alone controls crawling or ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add an HTML sitemap to a site that already has an XML sitemap?

Yes. The two formats complement each other. Keep the HTML page for visitor navigation and internal links, while the XML or text file handles machine-readable URL discovery and submission.

Should an HTML sitemap be blocked with noindex?

Usually not if the page is intended to be a useful public navigation resource. Blocking it from indexing removes a potential discovery path; instead, keep the page concise, link only to public canonical URLs, and exclude private or low-value destinations.

Can I use accordions or filters on a very large sitemap?

You can use progressive disclosure, but the links must remain keyboard accessible and available in usable HTML. For very large sets, category-specific sitemap pages are generally clearer than a script-dependent interface that hides the entire link structure.

How often should an HTML sitemap be updated?

Update it whenever a page is added, renamed, merged, redirected, or removed. On a frequently changing site, schedule at least a monthly status and accessibility review, with deployment checks for links and canonical destinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an HTML sitemap make every listed page rank?

No. It may help discovery and clarify internal relationships, but search engines still decide whether to crawl and index each URL. Content quality, canonicalization, accessibility, availability, and the site’s overall linking structure remain important.
