HP Envy x360 Ryzen: At First Glance

Ever since it was launched in October 2009, HP’s Envy lineup has gone on to be one of the best lineups in the laptop market. Moreover, the lineup was initially launched with two high-end models, the HP Envy 13 and the HP Envy 15.

So, in order to expand the Envy lineup, HP released the HP Envy x360 Ryzen in April 2020. This laptop is a convertible 2-in-1 laptop with a stylish design and a powerful AMD processor.

However, during the time I wrote this review article, this laptop is somewhat expensive. To be more specific, in March 2022, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen had a starting price tag of $1,199.77.

With such a heavy price tag, this laptop should have enough features to satisfy users’ demands, or won’t it? To find out, you have to read the rest of this review.

HP Envy x360 Ryzen: Design, Dimension, and Weight

To start with, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen features a well-styled and premium-looking design. Specifically, this laptop comes with a sleek aluminum body that offers a nightfall black texture.

Impressively, in case you don’t fancy black colors, you can also purchase this laptop with a bright white-toned color. Apart from its fancy color options, the laptop’s aluminum body feels so sturdy and you will hardly notice any flex even when pressed with force.

Moreover, as with the rest of the laptop’s body, the lid features a nightfall black texture. Also, there’s a modern silver metallic HP emblem in the center of the lid which adds to its overall awesomeness.

Furthermore, this lid is connected to the base of the laptop with two sturdy hinges. In addition to that, as a convertible laptop, these hinges can rotate a full 360-degrees.

Therefore, you can use the HP Envy x360 Ryzen in tablet mode, tent mode, stand mode, and the typical laptop mode. Moreover, switching between these modes should be very seamless due to the flexibility of the laptop’s hinges.

Moving further, on opening the HP Envy x360 Ryzen’s lid, you’ll be welcomed by a 13.3-inch touchscreen display. This display features an FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution that allows it to render vibrant and accurate colors.

Furthermore, the laptop’s touchscreen display responds to touches and inputs seamlessly and fast. Moreso, the display supports 10-finger multi-touch, which means the display can respond to up to 10 touches simultaneously.

However, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen’s display is bordered by thick upper and bottom bezels, but slim side bezels. The major reason why the top and bottom bezels are thick is that they house a webcam and an “HP” logo at the center respectively.

In fact, the webcam that is at the top bezel is an HP Wide Vision HD IR webcam with an integrated microphone. Therefore, this webcam should offer excellent performance for video calls and taking selfies.

Also, due to its IR sensor, the webcam supports facial recognition for easy login via Windows Hello.

Moving on, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen comes with an island-style keyboard. This keyboard is backlit with two-level backlighting, which allows you to type in dark areas easily.

Besides being backlit, this laptop’s keyboard is very comfortable for typing, with well-spaced and responsive keys. Moreover, at the top of this keyboard, there is a power button for turning on the laptop.

On the bottom of the keyboard, however, you will find a spacious touchpad with integrated click buttons. The surface of this touchpad is made of black mylar plastic and is very smooth, responsive, and sensitive.

Also, this touchpad features Windows precision drivers, which allows for the execution of Windows 10 gestures such as swipe-to-zoom, and so on. Furthermore, on the right side of this touchpad, you will find a fingerprint sensor.

Just like the webcam, this fingerprint sensor allows for easy login into Windows via Windows Hello. However, unlike the webcam that uses facial recognition, this fingerprint sensor uses biometric authentication.

For ports, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen comes with a USB 3.1 Type-C port, one USB 3.1 port, an SD card slot, and a power connector. These ports are on the right side of the laptop.

Meanwhile, on the left side of the laptop, you will find another USB 3.1 port, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a headphone/microphone combo jack.

In terms of dimension and weight, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen measures 306.7 x 214.6 x 14.9 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 1300 g. Comparatively, this laptop weighs less than another 13.3-inch convertible laptop by a different manufacturer, the Dell Inspiron 7373.

To be more specific, the Dell Inspiron 7373 measures 309.6 x 215.7 x 15.5 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 1630 g.

In conclusion, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen features a sleek design with an aluminum build. Moreover, this laptop weighs significantly less than one of its closest competitors.

Therefore, I will rate the HP Envy x360 Ryzen a nine out of ten in this design review section.

HP Envy x360 Ryzen: Processor (CPU) Performance

The HP Envy x360 Ryzen is equipped with a quad-core AMD Ryzen 5-2500U processor with a 6 MB cache memory. In addition to that, this processor has a base frequency of 2.00 GHz and a maximum frequency of 3.60 GHz.

Moreover, with the AMD Ryzen 5-2500U processor, expect the HP Envy x360 Ryzen to deliver adequate performance. As a matter of fact, this laptop should be able to handle most computing tasks including video editing and heavy multitasking.

In order to further ascertain this laptop’s performance, I will now discuss its result on the Cinbench R20 benchmark test. This benchmark test evaluates a computer’s processor performance by measuring its cores.

As a result, this test carries out two different tests which are the multi-core test and the single-core test. For better understanding, the multi-core test tells how fast the processor can be when all of its cores are utilized.

Whereas, the single-core test tells how fast the processor is when only one of its cores is being used. Furthermore, a high score on both Cinebench R20 tests means good processor performance.

So, according to the test result, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen scored 2095 points in the multi-core test. Also, this laptop scored 434 points in the single-core test.

Comparatively, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen has a better processor performance than one of its closest competitors, the Dell Inspiron 7373. Specifically, the Dell Inspiron 7373 scored 1128 points and 389 points on Cinebench R20 multi-core and single-core tests respectively.

I will like to point out that the Dell Inspiron 7373 uses a quad-core Intel Core i7-8550U processor.

In conclusion, as we can see from the above information, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen’s processor is very efficient and effective. Besides, the laptop performed better than one of its closest competitors on a CPU benchmark test.

As a result, I will rate the HP Envy x360 Ryzen a nine out of ten in this processor review section.

HP Envy x360 Ryzen: Memory (RAM) Performance

The HP Envy x360 Ryzen comes with a standard onboard 8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM on its single memory slot. Speaking of onboard, it means that the memory is soldered directly on the laptop’s motherboard.

As a result, you won’t be able to remove or upgrade the laptop’s memory. Nevertheless, with 8 GB RAM, this laptop should be able to run intensive applications with ease and multitask effectively.

Speaking of multitasking, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen can handle about 15 Chrome tabs running simultaneously without lagging. As a matter of fact, when these Chrome tabs are running, you can stream a YouTube video and the laptop still won’t lag.

That said, to further prove the HP Envy x360 Ryzen’s memory performance, we will now be discussing its PCMark 10 test result. The PCMark 10 test is a benchmark test that measures how well a laptop’s memory can perform when handling office-related workloads like web browsing.

In addition to that, a high score on this benchmark test means great memory performance. Hence, based on the PCMark 10 test result, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen scored 7752 points.

In comparison, this HP laptop was slightly outperformed by the Lenovo Yoga 9i 15 which scored 7809 points on the same test.

Hence, I will rate the HP Envy x360 Ryzen an eight out of ten in this memory review section.

HP Envy x360 Ryzen: Storage Options and Performance

For storage, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen comes with a PCIe NVMe SSD. This storage drive supports a maximum storage capacity of 256 GB.

In my opinion, 256 GB of storage space might be insufficient for most users to save heavy files or documents. Fortunately, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen features a microSD media card reader for storage expansion.

That said, in order to assess the performance of the laptop’s SSD, I will now share its result on a file transfer (copy) test. According to this test, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen was able to copy 4.97 GB of multimedia files at a transfer rate of 318.1 MB/s.

Compared to the Dell Inspiron 5577 which also uses an SSD storage type, this HP laptop has a faster transfer speed. Specifically, on the file transfer (copy) test, the Dell Inspiron 5577 was only able to copy 4.97 GB of multimedia files at a transfer rate of 115.7 MB/s.

That said, to further verify the HP Envy x360 Ryzen’s storage performance, we will now be discussing its CrystalDiskMark test result. The CrystalDiskMark test is a benchmark test that evaluates the read and writes speed of a computer’s storage drive.

For clarity, read speed is the time taken for a storage drive to open a file. Whereas, write speed is the time taken for the storage drive to save a file.

Moreover, on the CrystalDiskMark test, the higher the “MB/s” value, the faster the computer’s read and write speed. So, based on the test result, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen recorded a sequential read speed of 958.7 MB/s.

Also, this laptop recorded a sequential write speed of 731.5 MB/s. Unfortunately, when compared to the Lenovo IdeaPad S540 which also uses an SSD storage type, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen has a slow read and write speed.

To be more specific, the Lenovo IdeaPad S540 recorded a sequential read and write speed of 2011 MB/s and 2199 MB/s respectively on the CrystalDiskMark test.

Hence, I will rate the HP Envy x360 Ryzen a seven out of ten in this storage review section.

HP Envy x360 Ryzen: Graphics Card Performance

For the graphics card, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen comes with an integrated AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics. This graphics card has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 1100 MHz.

Furthermore, as an integrated GPU, this AMD graphics card lacks a dedicated VRAM. As a result, it shares the system memory with the laptop’s processor to perform graphics-related tasks.

Therefore, with this GPU, don’t expect the HP Envy x360 Ryzen to have the capability to smoothly run graphics-intensive applications or title AAA games. However, this laptop should be able to play a few modern games at low graphics settings.

For example, when playing F1 2019 at low graphics settings, this HP laptop delivered a frame rate of 20 fps. Also, while playing Forza Horizon 5 at low graphics settings, the laptop achieved a frame rate of 39 fps.

With that being said, I will now discuss the HP Envy x360 Ryzen’s result on a 3DMark 11 test to further verify its GPU performance. For clarity, a 3DMark 11 test is a benchmark test that evaluates the ability of a computer to render 2D and 3D graphics.

Also, on this graphics benchmark test, a high score means good graphics rendering performance. So, based on the 3DMark 11 test results, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen delivered a score of 4420 points.

In comparison with the HP Laptop – 17z-ca100 that uses the same GPU, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen performed better. Specifically, the HP Laptop – 17z-ca100 was only able to deliver a score of 3871 points on the 3DMark 11 test.

Thus, considering the facts above, I will rate the HP Envy x360 Ryzen an eight out of ten in this graphics card review section.

HP Envy x360 Ryzen: Battery Life and Performance

When it comes to the battery, HP equipped the Envy x360 Ryzen with a 4-cell 53.2 Wh Li-ion battery. Unfortunately, HP never mentioned how long this battery can last.

Therefore, to confirm the laptop’s battery life, we will now be discussing its result on a battery rundown test. This battery test involves continuous web browsing on the laptop over a Wi-Fi connection till it drains low.

So, at the end of the battery rundown test, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen delivered a battery life of 11 hours and 55 minutes. In comparison with the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M15, the Envy x360 Ryzen has long battery life.

To be more specific, according to the same battery rundown test, the ROG Zephyrus M15 delivered a battery life of 8 hours and 36 minutes.

In conclusion, the HP Envy x360 Ryzen offers a battery life that can last almost a full day. Moreover, this laptop has a longer battery life compared to one of its closest competitors.

Thus, I will rate the HP Envy x360 Ryzen a nine out of ten in this battery review section.
