x402 turns an ordinary HTTP request into a pay-per-use transaction. An AI agent requests a protected API, receives an HTTP 402 Payment Required challenge describing the price and payment conditions, signs an authorization with its wallet, then retries the request with a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header. The API (or a facilitator acting for it) verifies and settles the payment before returning the data and a settlement receipt.
That flow lets an agent buy one machine-readable result without first creating an account, negotiating a subscription, or receiving a pre-shared API key. It is useful for metered inference, embeddings, data lookups, content delivery, and other services where a request maps cleanly to a charge.
What is x402, and why does it matter for AI agents?
x402 is an open HTTP payment standard introduced by Coinbase. It assigns a practical meaning to the long-unused 402 Payment Required status: the server can pause an HTTP request, state exactly what payment it accepts, and let the client continue after presenting cryptographic proof of payment.
The client does not have to be an AI system; it can be any application able to control a compatible wallet. For autonomous agents, the important change is economic as well as technical. An agent can be authorized to spend a limited balance for a specific tool call instead of being given a broad, long-lived credential. Coinbase describes the goal as letting “developers and AI agents pay for APIs, services, and software directly with stablecoins over HTTP.”

x402 is not a bank-card checkout page and it is not a subscription manager. The payment credential is generated for the request, signed locally, and sent back over HTTP. The API operator chooses the price, accepted token, network, and destination address.
How does an x402 payment work from the first request to the paid response?
The clearest mental model is HTTP request, 402 challenge, signed retry, verified settlement, paid response. Each stage has a distinct job.
- Initial request. The agent sends a normal HTTP request to an endpoint that requires payment. At this point it looks like an ordinary API call.
- Payment challenge. The server responds with
402 Payment Required. ItsPAYMENT-REQUIREDheader carries encoded requirements, including the amount, accepted token, blockchain network, and merchant address. The challenge tells the client what it must authorize; it does not itself move funds. - Local signing. The agent’s wallet reads those requirements, constructs the payment payload, and signs it. The private key remains under the wallet’s control; the API should never need the key.
- Retry with proof. The agent repeats the original request and adds a
PAYMENT-SIGNATUREheader containing the signed payment credential. A robust client should retry only after checking that the challenge matches its spending policy. - Verification and settlement. The server verifies the credential and settles the transfer itself or asks a facilitator to do so. Cloudflare documents facilitator operations as
POST /verifyandPOST /settle. Settlement confirms that the authorization is valid and that the transfer can be broadcast on the specified network. - Fulfillment and receipt. After successful settlement, the API returns the requested data. A
PAYMENT-RESPONSEheader carries settlement confirmation so the client can record what was paid and reconcile the request.
If verification fails, the API should not provide the paid result. The client can then surface a useful error, such as an unsupported network, insufficient balance, invalid signature, or an expired challenge, rather than blindly repeating the request.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information is carried in the 402 challenge?
The challenge is the contract for the attempted purchase. At minimum, the client needs enough information to identify the amount, asset, chain, and recipient. In practice, a server’s encoded requirements can also include scheme and version details that determine how the authorization is formed.
- Price: the fixed amount for the requested resource, or the rules for determining a final amount.
- Token: the asset the server accepts. x402 is designed for stablecoin payments, but the exact token is selected by the API operator.
- Network: the blockchain on which the transfer must settle.
- Merchant address: the destination controlled by the service provider.
- Scheme and compatibility data: information needed by the wallet, verifier, and settlement component to interpret the payment correctly.
Because these values arrive with the response, a client can make a per-request decision instead of relying on a hard-coded price. Agents should still enforce an allowlist of tokens, networks, recipients, and maximum amounts before signing.

Who participates in an x402 transaction?
An implementation normally has three roles, with the payment scheme defining how they interact.
| Role | Responsibility | What it must protect |
|---|---|---|
| Client | An AI agent or application sends the request, evaluates the challenge, signs the payment payload, retries, and records the receipt. | Wallet keys, spending limits, destination allowlists, and replay protection. |
| Server | The API declares prices and accepted payment options, validates the credential, arranges settlement, and releases the response. | Pricing rules, credential validation, idempotency, and the decision to fulfill only after successful settlement. |
| Facilitator (optional) | Verification and settlement infrastructure used when the server does not want to maintain direct blockchain connectivity. | Availability, request authentication, and accurate reporting of verification and settlement results. |
A direct-settlement server has fewer external dependencies but must operate the required chain integrations. A facilitator can simplify deployment and provide a consistent interface, while adding a service dependency that must be monitored and included in failure handling.
Which x402 payment schemes and networks can be used?
Cloudflare’s documentation describes two broad scheme choices. The right one depends on whether the charge is known before execution.
| Scheme | Charge behavior | Network coverage documented by Cloudflare | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
exact |
A fixed amount is authorized and transferred for the request. | EVM networks plus several non-EVM networks. | One inference, lookup, download, or tool call with a known price. |
upto |
Documented for EVM networks; the final charge is determined at settlement, up to the authorized limit. | EVM networks. | Work whose metered cost is not known until processing finishes. |
The listed networks are Base, Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Solana, Aptos, Stellar, Sui, and Algorand. base-sepolia is documented for testing, while base appears in production examples. Availability is implementation-specific: an API advertises only the combinations it can verify and settle.
There is no universal x402 token list. The challenge identifies the accepted asset, and the wallet must hold that asset on the requested network. A funded wallet with the wrong token or chain is operationally equivalent to having no usable balance.

How can an API monetize a service with x402?
x402 fits products that can associate a payment with a single deterministic result or a clearly metered unit of work. Coinbase identifies API access, pay-per-use AI models, on-demand content, and machine-to-machine services as use cases.
AI inference and embeddings
An endpoint can charge per generation, classification, transcription, or embedding request. The request body and model choice determine the work, while the challenge states the amount the agent must authorize before the model runs.
Data and web lookups
A provider can sell a single record, search result, price observation, or other machine-readable lookup. This avoids issuing a general-purpose key to every consuming agent.
Content and file delivery
Reports, datasets, documents, or generated files can be delivered after settlement. The server should bind the payment to the specific resource and request parameters so a valid credential cannot be reused for a different item.
Tool calls and machine-to-machine services
An agent can pay another service for a bounded operation, such as a conversion, validation, or specialized computation. Pricing must be explicit enough that the calling agent can apply a budget before signing.

How do clients and servers implement the request-and-retry cycle?
Implementation details vary by framework, but the control flow should remain predictable.
Client-side checklist
- Send the original HTTP request without a payment header.
- On
402, parsePAYMENT-REQUIREDand validate its version, scheme, network, token, recipient, amount, and any expiry or nonce. - Apply local policy: reject unknown recipients, unsupported chains, amounts above the agent’s per-call limit, or tokens the wallet is not permitted to spend.
- Construct and sign the payment payload locally.
- Retry the same request with
PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. Preserve an idempotency key where the API defines one, so a network timeout does not trigger accidental duplicate work. - Accept the response only after checking its status and, where required, the
PAYMENT-RESPONSEsettlement confirmation. - Store the request identifier, amount, network, transaction reference, and response status for accounting and dispute investigation.
Server-side checklist
- Mark protected routes and define the price, token, network, recipient, scheme, and validity rules.
- Return a standards-compatible
402response with an encodedPAYMENT-REQUIREDheader when the request lacks valid payment. - On retry, parse and verify
PAYMENT-SIGNATUREbefore doing billable work. - Call the verifier and settlement path, either through direct chain connectivity or a facilitator.
- Make fulfillment idempotent: a repeated submission of the same valid authorization should not create two charges or two expensive jobs.
- Return the resource only after the settlement result meets the server’s acceptance policy, and include
PAYMENT-RESPONSEconfirmation.
Cloudflare supplies SDK, middleware, and proxy examples, while Coinbase supplies the protocol and facilitator reference. Those integrations can reduce boilerplate, but header names, supported schemes, and SDK behavior should be checked against the version actually deployed.
Do x402 payments require API keys or service accounts?
No, not for the payment itself. The normal path is a wallet-signed authorization attached to the retried HTTP request, so an API operator can offer access without pre-creating a service account, session token, subscription, or shared API key.
An operator may still require ordinary authentication for non-payment reasons, such as abuse controls, private data access, or customer entitlements. In that case, x402 handles the payment leg; it does not replace every identity or authorization system around an API.
What security and reliability problems should operators plan for?
- Autonomous spending: Give agents explicit per-request, per-day, recipient, and network limits. A valid signature only proves authorization by the wallet, not that the purchase is wise.
- Replay and duplicate settlement: Track nonces, expirations, request identifiers, and transaction state. Retries after a timeout must be safe and idempotent.
- Wrong-chain or wrong-token errors: Compare the challenge with wallet holdings before signing; do not silently bridge or swap unless that behavior is separately authorized.
- Untrusted challenge data: Treat the server’s amount and destination as untrusted input until they pass policy checks. A compromised endpoint could otherwise ask for more than the agent intended to spend.
- Facilitator outages: A facilitator reduces blockchain integration work but can become a dependency. Define timeouts, fallback behavior, and a clear distinction between “not verified,” “broadcast,” and “settled.”
- Partial failures: The payment may settle while the HTTP response is lost. Receipts, transaction references, and an idempotent fulfillment record let the client recover without paying twice.
- Changing interfaces: Network support, header versions, SDK behavior, and facilitator availability can change. Pin compatible versions and recheck deployment documentation before production changes.
How should two x402 implementations be compared?
Price alone is not enough. Compare the complete payment and fulfillment path.

| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Are header names and protocol versions compatible? | A client and server can both claim x402 support yet fail if they encode or interpret requirements differently. |
| Which schemes, tokens, and networks are supported? | This determines whether the agent’s wallet can actually satisfy the challenge and whether test and production environments match. |
| Is settlement direct or facilitator-based? | Direct operation offers control; a facilitator can simplify connectivity but adds an availability and trust dependency. |
| How are keys and signing controls handled? | Wallet custody, hardware or remote signing, policy enforcement, and audit logs define the practical risk of autonomous payment. |
| How are retries, replay, nonces, and receipts handled? | These details decide whether transient HTTP failures become duplicate charges or unreconciled payments. |
| What SDK, middleware, or proxy support exists for the server framework? | Integration quality affects how much protocol and chain-specific code the API team must maintain. |
What does x402 cost, and what performance claims are established?
Coinbase said in its 2025 launch discussion that on-chain fees had fallen to 1 cent, describing modern layer-2 payment economics. That is a contextual figure, not a guaranteed fee for every x402 transaction: the actual cost depends on the selected network, token, congestion, wallet behavior, and settlement path.
There is no single protocol-wide latency, adoption, transaction-volume, or success-rate number. A deployment must measure its own wallet-signing time, facilitator response, chain confirmation policy, API processing time, and recovery rate for lost responses.
When is x402 a good fit for an API?
Choose x402 when the value of direct, metered access outweighs the complexity of wallet funding and blockchain settlement.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Good fit: a request has a clear unit price, the result is machine-readable, customers may be occasional or anonymous, and the operator wants to avoid issuing long-lived credentials.
- Less suitable: usage is highly interactive, requires refunds or complex billing adjustments, depends on sensitive identity checks, or cannot tolerate a blockchain or facilitator dependency.
- Use a hybrid model: keep account authentication for private or high-value operations and expose x402 on bounded, pay-per-use endpoints.
The deciding test is simple: can the service describe the purchase in one challenge and safely fulfill it after one verified settlement? If yes, x402 can make the payment boundary as programmable as the API boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a facilitator take custody of the buyer’s funds?
No. In the documented model, the client signs the payment before submission; the facilitator verifies it and broadcasts the pre-signed transaction, rather than holding the funds. The API operator should still evaluate the facilitator’s availability, authentication, and logging practices.
What happens if payment settles but the API response times out?
The client should query its stored transaction or receipt reference and retry the same request with an idempotency key if the API supports one. The server needs a durable fulfillment record so recovery does not execute the paid operation twice.
Can an agent use x402 with a custodial or remote wallet?
Yes, provided that wallet service can produce the required signature and enforce the agent’s spending policy. Remote signing changes key custody and operational controls, but it does not change the HTTP challenge-and-retry sequence.
