1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWordPress Multisite hosting runs multiple related websites from one WordPress installation, shared core files, and a network administration layer. The model can simplify governance, branding, updates, and site creation, but it also shares failure risks and requires capable DNS, SSL, backup, staging, and resource management. Kinsta, WP Engine, and Cloudways are the clearest researched options, each for a different buyer.
WordPress Multisite is best understood as a centralized operating model, not a shortcut for placing unrelated websites on one cheap hosting account. A university’s departments, a franchise network, or a company’s regional sites may benefit greatly. Independent client sites with different plugin stacks, owners, security requirements, or maintenance schedules are usually safer as separate WordPress installations.
Key takeaways
- WordPress Multisite uses one WordPress installation for multiple sites while keeping each site’s content, settings, media, and database table set logically separate.
- Subdirectory networks use paths such as
example.com/store/, while subdomain networks use addresses such asstore.example.com; subdomains commonly require wildcard DNS and more involved SSL routing. - Native domain mapping has been part of WordPress since WordPress 4.5, but mapped domains still require working DNS, hosting configuration, SSL, redirects, cookies, caching, and staging.
- Multisite centralizes updates and governance, but a faulty plugin, overloaded subsite, database failure, or mistaken deployment can affect the entire network.
- Kinsta explicitly documents Multisite support and mapped-domain limitations; WP Engine restricts Multisite to eligible plans or an extension; Cloudways offers cloud-provider flexibility but expects more technical involvement.
What is WordPress Multisite hosting?
WordPress Multisite hosting runs a WordPress network in which one WordPress codebase serves multiple individual sites. According to WordPress’s Multisite documentation, the network shares WordPress core files and can share installed themes and plugins, while each site retains its own content and database tables. Media uploads remain associated with individual subsites inside the shared installation.
A Multisite network has a higher-level administrator called a Super Admin or Network Administrator. The Network Administrator installs themes and plugins, creates sites, controls network settings, and decides whether themes or plugins are available to one site or the whole network. Site administrators manage their own sites only within the permissions granted by the network.

Multisite does not create one unified pool of posts that every site automatically displays. Multisite does not give every site administrator complete server or plugin independence. Multisite does not automatically improve performance or guarantee lower hosting costs. The architecture centralizes application management while preserving separate site URLs, content, settings, users, and media.
How does WordPress Multisite hosting work behind the scenes?
WordPress Multisite hosting combines shared application files with site-specific data and request routing. A visitor requests a domain or path, the web server sends the request to the same WordPress installation, and WordPress identifies the relevant subsite from the hostname or URL path.
Shared core, themes, and plugins
Every subsite uses the network’s WordPress core. Themes and plugins are installed centrally, although the Network Administrator can generally make them available to selected sites or network-activate them. A site administrator cannot safely treat the network as a completely private WordPress installation because a centrally managed update may affect several sites at once.
Centralized code creates efficiency: one team can apply a core update, maintain a shared design system, or deploy a common security plugin across many sites. Centralized code also creates a larger blast radius. A vulnerable, incompatible, or resource-intensive plugin can cause problems across the network, especially when the plugin is network-activated.

Database organization
A Multisite network uses one WordPress database system with separate table sets for individual sites, alongside network-level tables. The practical result is more important than the table names: a database failure, corrupted backup, or poorly tested database-heavy plugin can affect the whole network.
Backups must cover the entire network. Restoring one subsite may be more complicated than restoring one standalone WordPress site because content, users, options, uploads, serialized data, and network configuration may be interdependent. Ask a host whether a backup restore replaces the whole network or can restore one subsite, one database component, or selected files.
Files and media
The installation shares WordPress core files and installed code, but uploaded media remains associated with individual subsites in site-specific upload locations. A file backup therefore needs to include the shared WordPress files and every subsite’s media, not just the main site’s document directory.
DNS, web-server rules, and request routing
The host must route every network domain or path to the same WordPress document root. The configuration can involve DNS records, virtual hosts or equivalent routing, rewrite rules, PHP settings, SSL certificates, and caching rules that understand several sites.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →WordPress’s network preparation guidance notes that Multisite requires more complex rewrite rules and, on Apache, support for mod_rewrite, .htaccess, and suitable AllowOverride settings. Nginx and IIS require their own equivalent configuration. A host that merely lets one account contain several unrelated WordPress folders may not support this network routing model.
| What is shared | What remains site-specific | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress core and centrally installed code | Site content, settings, URLs, and permissions | One code update can affect many sites, while site-level configuration remains distinct. |
| Network administration | Site administration within granted permissions | Governance is centralized, but site owners do not automatically receive Super Admin access. |
| Database installation | Separate table sets and site data | Network-wide backups are essential and selective restores may be difficult. |
| Hosting environment | Subsite traffic and workloads | A busy or broken subsite can compete for shared CPU, memory, PHP workers, database time, or bandwidth. |
What is the difference between subdirectory, subdomain, and mapped-domain Multisite?
WordPress Multisite can identify subsites by URL paths, subdomains, or custom domains. The right structure depends on how strongly the sites should appear related and how much DNS and SSL administration the team can handle.
| Structure | Example | Best suited to | Main requirements or concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subdirectory | example.com/store/ |
Closely related sites under one parent brand | Usually avoids wildcard DNS, but paths and rewrite rules can collide with an existing site structure. |
| Subdomain | store.example.com |
Departments, campuses, regions, franchises, and sites created on demand | Often requires wildcard DNS, correct server routing, and certificates covering subdomains. |
| Mapped domain | store-brand.com |
Subsites that need their own public brand or domain | Requires DNS, hosting attachment, SSL, redirects, cookies, canonical URLs, cache, CDN, and staging configuration. |
When should you choose a subdirectory network?
Choose a subdirectory network when the sites should clearly belong to one parent domain and the existing site can accommodate path-based routing. A subdirectory network may be simpler because ordinary path-based sites do not need wildcard DNS.
Subdirectories can still create conflicts with existing directories, rewrite rules, and permalink structures. Converting an established site into a subdirectory network may be complicated, and WordPress documents special considerations around existing content and URL paths. Test the structure on staging or a disposable installation before changing a production site.

When should you choose a subdomain network?
Choose a subdomain network when each department, region, campus, or franchise should have a clearly separated address beneath the same parent domain. Subdomains are also useful when the network will create sites on demand.
A wildcard DNS record such as *.example.com may be required so newly created subdomains resolve to the server. DNS alone is not enough: the hosting environment must accept wildcard requests, route them to WordPress, and issue valid SSL certificates. WordPress recommends placing a subdomain installation at the root of the web folder; non-root arrangements require more advanced virtual-host and redirect configuration.
How does mapped-domain Multisite work?
Domain mapping makes a subsite that technically exists inside the network appear at its own domain. For example, a subsite may begin at network.example.com/brand-a/ and eventually operate at brand-a.com.
Native domain mapping has been included in WordPress since WordPress 4.5. Older tutorials that treat a domain-mapping plugin as mandatory may therefore be outdated, although plugins can still provide additional workflows. Native WordPress functionality does not remove infrastructure work. The custom domain must resolve to the host, receive a valid certificate, avoid an unwanted redirect to the main network domain, and work with cookies, canonical URLs, caches, CDNs, login, and staging.
WordPress’s domain-mapping documentation describes the essential sequence: map the DNS, install SSL, and update the subsite’s Site Address with the complete URL, including https://.
What are the benefits of WordPress Multisite hosting?
The strongest benefit of WordPress Multisite hosting is centralized governance, not an automatic discount on hosting.
- Centralized maintenance: one team manages the core installation and shared code rather than repeating the same work across many separate dashboards.
- Consistent branding: shared themes, templates, and design rules help departments, regions, chapters, and franchises present a coherent identity.
- Controlled plugin access: the Network Administrator can standardize the approved plugin stack and prevent individual site owners from installing untested code.
- Faster site provisioning: a network can create standardized new sites without building every installation from scratch.
- Centralized user governance: the network can manage users and roles across related sites while still limiting ordinary site administrators.
- Operational consistency: shared security policies, monitoring, update procedures, and documentation are easier to enforce across related sites.
These benefits are most valuable when sites share a brand, governance model, technical stack, and support team. A network of standardized school sites is a stronger Multisite candidate than a collection of unrelated client websites.
What are the disadvantages and risks?
Multisite trades duplicated administration for shared dependency. The network is easier to govern centrally, but individual sites are harder to isolate, restore, migrate, and customize independently.

- Resource contention: traffic spikes, imports, background jobs, search indexing, media processing, membership workloads, or WooCommerce activity can consume resources needed by other subsites.
- Plugin compatibility: some plugins assume they control a single site, write to global tables, create network-wide jobs, mishandle uploads, or behave incorrectly with mapped domains.
- More difficult recovery: daily backups are not enough if the provider cannot restore the affected subsite without overwriting unrelated sites.
- Staging limitations: ordinary single-site staging may not accurately handle subdomains, mapped domains, DNS, SSL, selective database pushes, or site-specific content.
- Reduced independence: separate owners may not be able to choose their own plugins, update schedules, server settings, or administrators.
- Harder separation later: moving one subsite into a standalone WordPress installation can require careful handling of URLs, users, media, serialized data, integrations, and domain mappings.
WordPress advises reconsidering Multisite when sites have substantially different requirements or when their data and users need complex interconnections. WP Engine similarly cautions against using Multisite for unrelated sites with different themes or customization levels.
Is WordPress Multisite right for your organization?
WordPress Multisite is probably appropriate when related sites need shared branding, centralized administration, common themes or plugins, and a capable Network Administrator. Separate installations are usually safer when site independence, security isolation, custom infrastructure, or unrelated ownership matters more.
| Situation | Likely choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| University departments or campuses sharing governance and branding | Multisite | Centralized templates, users, plugins, and administration fit the network model. |
| Franchise or regional sites using a common design system | Multisite, often with subdomains or mapped domains | Sites are related but may need distinct public addresses. |
| Agency hosting unrelated clients with different plugin stacks | Separate installations | Independent ownership, security, backups, and deployments reduce shared risk. |
| One very high-traffic site alongside many small sites | Investigate carefully; separation may be better | Unequal workloads can create resource contention and an unacceptable failure domain. |
| Organization without a capable Network Administrator | Separate installations or managed specialist support | Multisite requires governance, compatibility testing, backup planning, and recovery procedures. |
| Sites needing different PHP, database, or server configurations | Separate installations | A shared application and hosting environment cannot provide complete independence. |
What should WordPress Multisite hosting provide?
A suitable host should confirm actual network support rather than merely advertise multiple WordPress websites on one account.
Server and runtime capabilities
- WordPress-compatible PHP and a supported MySQL or MariaDB environment.
- Enough PHP workers, memory, CPU, storage, and database capacity for the combined network.
- Apache rewrite support or equivalent Nginx/IIS rules.
- SSH, SFTP, or an equivalent way to manage files and diagnostics.
- Reliable scheduled-task or cron support.
- Page and object caching that correctly separates domains, paths, users, and cookies.
- Resource visibility that helps identify which subsite is consuming CPU, PHP workers, memory, database time, or bandwidth.
DNS, domain, and SSL support
- Wildcard DNS or equivalent routing for subdomain networks when required.
- Multiple domains attached to one network.
- Custom-domain routing without forcing every domain to the primary network URL.
- SSL for the main domain, subdomains, and every mapped domain.
- Clear instructions for DNS managed outside the host.
- CDN and cache support for multiple hostnames.
Kinsta documents free SSL for verified domains and warns that forcing every mapped-domain request to the primary domain can make subsites unreachable. The warning illustrates why domain mapping must be tested at the host, CDN, proxy, and WordPress layers.

Backup, restore, and staging support
Ask these questions before buying:
- Do backups cover the complete network, including every site’s database data and media?
- Can the host restore one subsite, or only the whole network?
- Can database and files be restored separately?
- What is the retention period, and are backups stored off-site?
- Can a subsite be cloned or exported?
- Does staging support subdomain networks and mapped domains?
- Can selective pushes avoid overwriting unrelated subsites?
- How are staging DNS, SSL, cookies, and mapped domains handled?
Kinsta states that subdirectory Multisite is compatible with its staging environment, while subdomain and domain-mapped configurations can depend on the setup. Kinsta also warns that domain-mapped staging may require significant manual configuration. The host’s exact current behavior should be verified for the planned network rather than inferred from ordinary single-site staging.
What are the best WordPress Multisite hosting providers?
The best WordPress Multisite provider depends on the network’s domain structure, traffic distribution, recovery needs, budget, and technical skill. The following shortlist is conditional positioning based on the researched documentation, not an independent speed or reliability test.
| Provider | Best fit | Evidence and notable qualification | Potential poor fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinsta | Premium managed Multisite hosting | Current pricing and documentation explicitly address Multisite, domains, SSL, staging, migrations, CDN, and monitoring. The pricing page displayed WP 2 at $70/month monthly or $59/month billed annually during the research pass, with two WordPress installs; prices and promotions can change. | Lowest-budget buyers, teams needing deep server customization, or networks requiring independently isolated environments without confirming restore behavior. |
| WP Engine | Managed WordPress organizations and agencies | Multisite is included with Premium plans and available as a product extension on Growth and higher plans; Lite and Startup cannot purchase it. The retrieved documentation did not provide a current public extension price. | Buyers comparing entry-level pricing or assuming every WP Engine plan includes Multisite. |
| Cloudways | Technical teams wanting cloud-provider flexibility | Cloudways has a dedicated WordPress Multisite offering and a more flexible infrastructure model. Displayed promotional and regular prices require verification by provider, region, server size, billing term, and promotion. | Nontechnical teams seeking a fully hands-off WordPress environment and simple all-in pricing. |
| SiteGround or another mainstream host | Teams willing to obtain written confirmation | The researched material confirms managed WordPress and multiple-site offerings but does not establish enough current Multisite-specific evidence for a definitive ranking. | Any buyer who has not verified wildcard DNS, domain mapping, staging, SSL, and selective restoration. |
| Self-managed VPS or dedicated server | Experienced technical teams needing maximum control | Can provide control over web-server rules, DNS, PHP, database, caching, scaling, and isolation decisions, but the team owns those responsibilities. | Organizations without expertise in security, backups, SSL, scaling, monitoring, and recovery. |
Why is Kinsta a strong premium Multisite option?
Kinsta is the strongest premium managed option in this researched shortlist because Kinsta publishes specific Multisite guidance covering subdomains, subdirectories, domain mapping, SSL, staging limitations, and migrations. Kinsta’s pricing page displayed a WP 2 plan at $70 per month on monthly billing or $59 per month billed annually during the research pass; the displayed plan included two WordPress installs, 40 GB server bandwidth, 20 GB storage, 250 GB CDN bandwidth, unlimited free migrations, and 14-day backup retention. Prices were shown in USD before tax and may change.
Kinsta is a sensible candidate for an organization that values managed infrastructure, CDN, SSL, migrations, staging, and application-performance diagnostics. Kinsta is less suitable when the lowest possible price, deep server customization, or fully independent hosting environments matters more than centralized management. Confirm how the selected plan handles subsite-level restoration before purchase.
See Kinsta’s Multisite hosting page and verify current eligibility and pricing on Kinsta’s pricing page.
When does WP Engine make sense?
WP Engine makes sense for managed WordPress organizations that want documented Multisite eligibility and structured agency or enterprise workflows. WP Engine’s Multisite documentation states that Multisite is included with Premium plans, while Growth and higher shared plans can purchase a Multisite product extension; Lite and Startup plans cannot purchase it.
WP Engine should not be selected on the assumption that every plan supports a network. Confirm the extension’s current price, the plan’s domain and staging behavior, backup scope, and whether the provider can restore an individual subsite in the required way.
When does Cloudways make sense?
Cloudways is aimed at technical teams that want a managed control layer over cloud infrastructure rather than a tightly standardized managed WordPress environment. Its WordPress Multisite hosting page describes Multisite deployment and cloud-provider-dependent plans.
Cloudways can be attractive when the team understands server sizing, DNS, caching, scaling, and troubleshooting. The researched page displayed promotional and regular-price figures inconsistently, so verify the exact cloud provider, location, server size, billing term, promotion, support scope, and final total before signup.
Should you choose SiteGround or another mainstream host?
A mainstream managed WordPress host may be suitable, but a multiple-site plan does not prove actual Multisite support. The available SiteGround plan material does not establish enough current evidence about Multisite eligibility, wildcard DNS, domain mapping, staging, or subsite restoration to rank SiteGround as a definitive best provider.
Ask the host for written confirmation of the exact network configuration before buying. A provider that supports five standalone WordPress installations may still restrict wp-config.php, wildcard DNS, network-level cron, mapped domains, SSL certificates, database access, or Multisite staging.
How much does WordPress Multisite hosting cost?
WordPress Multisite hosting has no universal price because the total cost depends on the number of sites, combined traffic, storage, PHP workers, domains, staging, backup retention, support, migrations, monitoring, and isolation requirements.

The displayed plan included two WordPress installs, 40 GB server bandwidth, 20 GB storage, 250 GB CDN bandwidth, unlimited free migrations, and 14-day backup retention. The figures were observed in USD before tax and are volatile; verify the current price, plan eligibility, overages, and Multisite terms before purchasing.
WP Engine’s retrieved documentation confirms plan eligibility but does not provide a current public price for its Multisite extension. Cloudways displayed provider- and promotion-dependent pricing rather than a stable single price. A responsible comparison therefore uses current checkout details, not a copied headline price.
| Cost question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does one network count as one installation? | Some hosts require a plan with multiple installations or charge a Multisite extension. |
| What are the combined traffic and storage limits? | All subsites share the network’s hosting resources, even when the software permits many sites. |
| Are mapped domains included? | Additional domains may involve hosting configuration, SSL, CDN, and support work. |
| Is staging included? | Mapped-domain and subdomain staging may need manual configuration or a higher tier. |
| What does backup restoration cost or include? | A cheap backup that cannot restore the affected subsite may create high recovery costs. |
| Is developer help needed? | Conversion, domain mapping, plugin testing, and separation may require paid technical work. |
Multisite can reduce duplicated administration, but it does not guarantee lower total cost. If the network needs specialized support, selective restoration, expensive staging, or substantial developer maintenance, separate installations may be cheaper and safer overall.

Recommended Free Tools
Before enabling the network
- Confirm host support. Ask specifically about Multisite, subdomains or subdirectories, mapped domains, wildcard DNS, SSL, staging, backups, and subsite restoration.
- Choose the URL model. Decide whether the network will use subdirectories, subdomains, or mapped domains.
- Finalize the site URLs. Confirm the WordPress URL and site URL before network creation.
- Verify Pretty Permalinks. WordPress requires working permalink behavior for network setup.
- Back up files and the database. Keep a tested copy outside the production environment.
- Test on staging or a disposable installation. Include the actual server type, DNS model, SSL, themes, plugins, and domain structure.
- Review plugin compatibility. Identify plugins that assume one site, use global tables, create cron jobs, process uploads, or handle cookies and domains.
- Write a rollback plan. Define who can restore the backup, how URLs will be recovered, and how DNS will be returned if the conversion fails.
WordPress states that network creation updates the existing installation, so the official creation procedure calls for backups, working Pretty Permalinks, and deactivated active plugins before network creation.
How do you enable Multisite?
Add the following line to wp-config.php above the “That’s all, stop editing” line or before the first require or include statement:
define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true );
- Log in to WordPress.
- Open Tools → Network Setup.
- Choose subdomains or subdirectories.
- Enter the network title and Network Administrator email.
- Click Install.
- Copy the additional
wp-config.phpand.htaccess, Nginx, or IIS instructions WordPress generates. - Apply the generated configuration exactly as instructed for the server.
- Log in again and open Network Admin.
The final generated rules should take priority over generic snippets because server type, installation path, and network structure change the required configuration. The Network Administration documentation explains the role of settings such as SUBDOMAIN_INSTALL; a domain-based network uses a true value and a path-based network uses a false value, but the generated instructions remain authoritative.
WordPress’s Network Setup screen documentation covers the dashboard path and network creation interface.
How do you add and configure a subsite?
- Open Network Admin → Sites → Add New.
- Enter the site address, title, and administrator email.
- Create the site.
- Configure the subsite’s theme, users, menus, settings, and content.
- Test the site at its original network URL.
- Map a custom domain only after the underlying subsite works correctly.
How do you map a custom domain?
- Point the domain’s DNS records to the hosting environment.
- Add the domain to the hosting account, server, proxy, or CDN.
- Issue and verify SSL for the domain.
- Open Network Admin → Sites and edit the target subsite.
- Replace the Site Address with the complete mapped URL, including
https://. - Test the front end, login, redirects, media, cookies, canonical URLs, administrator access, CDN, and cache behavior.
Do not treat domain mapping as merely changing the Site Address field. DNS, SSL, host routing, redirects, caching, and browser cookies must all agree on the mapped domain.
How do you troubleshoot common Multisite hosting failures?
New subdomains do not resolve
If the main site works but new subdomains return DNS errors, check the wildcard DNS record, its destination, the hosting account’s acceptance of wildcard requests, and any CDN or reverse proxy that may override DNS behavior. A WordPress site cannot create a reachable subdomain if DNS and server routing do not send the request to the network installation.
SSL works on the main site but not subsites
Certificate warnings, redirect loops, and mixed-content errors usually indicate incomplete certificate coverage or inconsistent HTTPS handling between the browser, CDN, proxy, and origin server. Issue certificates for mapped domains or use an appropriate wildcard certificate, then confirm that the host is not redirecting every domain to the primary network domain.
Login loops or cookie errors appear after mapping
Confirm that the mapped Site Address contains the complete HTTPS URL, clear old cookies, and test in a private browser window. Check URL and cookie configuration across the proxy and WordPress layers. WordPress documents a COOKIE_DOMAIN workaround for certain cookie and login failures, but that setting is a troubleshooting option rather than a universal requirement.

A plugin breaks several sites
Deactivate or roll back the plugin according to the network’s recovery plan, then inspect whether the plugin assumes one site, writes to global tables, creates network-wide cron jobs, mishandles uploads, or conflicts with domain mapping and caching. Test every plugin on staging before network activation; success on the main site does not prove Multisite compatibility.
One subsite overwhelms the network
Use resource monitoring or application-performance monitoring to identify expensive PHP, database, AJAX, cron, import, media, or search-indexing work. Possible mitigations include object caching, database optimization, more PHP workers or memory, a higher hosting tier, CDN delivery for static assets, reduced background jobs, and ultimately moving the high-traffic site into a separate installation.
Kinsta advertises application performance monitoring for diagnosing PHP, database, plugin, and AJAX bottlenecks, but monitoring identifies problems rather than creating isolation by itself.
Staging does not match production
Mapped domains and subdomain networks can fail on staging when DNS still points to production, certificates are missing, database URLs are incompletely replaced, or a selective push overwrites unrelated subsites. Document the host’s exact staging behavior before choosing a plan and test a restore or push procedure before relying on it.

What should you ask a hosting provider before buying?
- Do you support one WordPress Multisite network, not just multiple standalone installations?
- Which plans include Multisite, and does a network require an extension?
- Can you support subdirectory, subdomain, and mapped-domain configurations?
- Do you provide wildcard DNS or explain the required external DNS setup?
- Can you issue SSL for every mapped domain and subdomain?
- Will the host or CDN redirect mapped domains to the primary domain?
- Can staging handle this exact network structure?
- Can you restore one subsite, or only the whole network?
- How are PHP workers, CPU, memory, database time, storage, and bandwidth measured?
- Can support troubleshoot rewrite rules, DNS, SSL, cookies, caching, and plugin compatibility?
- Can one subsite later be exported to a standalone WordPress installation?
- What are the current price, renewal price, overages, backup retention, and support limits?
Multisite maintenance checklist
- Keep a complete, tested network backup before core, theme, or plugin changes.
- Stage updates and test every important subsite, not only the main site.
- Review network-activated plugins and remove code that is no longer required.
- Monitor per-site resource consumption and investigate traffic or cron changes.
- Document every domain, DNS record, certificate, redirect, CDN rule, and mapped Site Address.
- Test login, cookies, media, canonical URLs, and HTTPS after domain changes.
- Review Network Administrator and site administrator permissions regularly.
- Practice a whole-network restore and determine whether individual subsite recovery is possible.
- Keep a plan for separating a subsite if ownership, traffic, compliance, or technical requirements change.
- Record the host’s current plan eligibility and pricing because provider terms and promotions change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WordPress Multisite use one database?
WordPress Multisite uses one WordPress database system for the network, with separate table sets for individual sites and additional network-level tables. The arrangement is centralized but does not create one shared content store in which every subsite automatically uses the same posts.
Can each WordPress Multisite subsite have its own domain?
Yes. Native domain mapping has been part of WordPress since WordPress 4.5, so a subsite can use a custom domain. The domain still needs correct DNS, hosting routing, SSL, redirects, cookies, canonical URLs, caching, and staging configuration.
Can site administrators install their own plugins in Multisite?
Usually, ordinary site administrators cannot install arbitrary plugins unless the Network Administrator grants the required capability or makes the plugin available. The Network Administrator controls network-level plugin installation and activation.
Is WordPress Multisite cheaper than separate WordPress installations?
WordPress Multisite can reduce duplicated administration, but it is not automatically cheaper. Specialized hosting, domain mapping, staging, backup recovery, resource contention, and developer maintenance can make a network more expensive than separate installations.
Can one Multisite subsite be moved to its own WordPress installation?
A subsite can be separated, but the process may require careful handling of URLs, database content, users, media, serialized data, integrations, domain mappings, and redirects. Treat separation as a migration project and test it before changing production.
The Bottom Line
Choose WordPress Multisite hosting when related sites need centralized governance, shared branding, common code, and a capable team to manage the network. Choose separate installations when sites need independent owners, plugins, server settings, recovery schedules, security boundaries, or traffic isolation.
Before purchasing, verify actual Multisite support in writing. Confirm the URL model, wildcard DNS, SSL for every domain, mapped-domain behavior, staging compatibility, backup scope, selective restoration, resource limits, and total price. Kinsta is the clearest premium managed candidate in the researched shortlist, WP Engine is compelling when its eligible plan or extension fits, and Cloudways is better suited to technical teams that value cloud flexibility. No provider is universally best without matching those capabilities to the network you intend to run.
