Valor Mortis stands apart from the Soulslike field most clearly through its first-person perspective and supernatural Napoleonic-era setting. Its announced combat combines period melee weapons, flintlock firearms and supernatural abilities, while its publisher describes exploration as Metroidvania-style. Those features make it possible to compare the game’s design direction with the genre; they do not establish that it is harder, longer, better or more interconnected than any particular Soulslike.
What sets Valor Mortis apart from the Soulslike template?
The clearest distinction is the viewpoint. The publisher describes Valor Mortis as a first-person action Soulslike, rather than presenting it through the familiar third-person perspective associated with many games in the genre. That changes the way the game is framed, but official descriptions alone cannot show whether its combat will feel easier, more immersive or more precise to individual players.
The other major distinction is its setting: a supernatural reimagining of 19th-century Europe during the Napoleonic era. The player character, William, is described as a resurrected soldier of the Grande Armée. In the publisher’s story premise, a plague spreads after Napoleon’s eastward campaign stalls, and the affliction gives William corrupting powers. Named characters include Napoleon, rebel leader the Shrike, fellow soldier James Stewart and lamplighter Lucjan Skawiński.
How its announced combat compares by design
The announced toolkit mixes familiar action-game verbs with weapons and powers tied to the setting. The publisher describes skill- and stamina-based combat built around parries, dashes and visceral finishers, with dual-wielding, rapiers, flintlock pistols and supernatural abilities. PlayStation’s official description also highlights those combat elements.

| Comparison axis | What is established about Valor Mortis | What that comparison can—and cannot—show |
|---|---|---|
| Viewpoint | First-person, according to the publisher. | A clear presentation difference from third-person Soulslikes. It does not, on its own, establish how readable or demanding combat is. |
| Combat options | Parries, dashes, finishers, dual-wielding, period melee and ranged weapons, and supernatural abilities are advertised. | A broader mix of weapon types and combat actions is part of the announced concept. Depth, balance and how the options work together are not established by feature descriptions. |
| Setting and tone | Supernatural Napoleonic-era Europe, with plague, war and horror elements. | Its historical-fantasy premise provides a distinct backdrop. A direct tonal comparison requires evidence about the specific other game. |
| Exploration | The publisher calls the approach Metroidvania-style and promotes mobility and environmental secrets. | This signals an exploration emphasis, but does not establish the finished map’s structure, degree of backtracking or interconnectedness. |
| Death and growth | PlayStation says, “Each death is a chance to grow stronger.” | This indicates a growth theme around death, not the precise rules for checkpoints, lost resources, recovery or character progression. |
What “Metroidvania-style” exploration means here
The publisher’s description points to movement, environmental secrets and routes that reward exploration. That is a useful contrast with a Soulslike comparison focused only on combat: Valor Mortis is being presented as a game where traversal and discovery also matter. However, the phrase does not prove that its levels will connect in a particular way, require specific abilities to revisit earlier areas, or match any named game’s map design.
Can you compare it directly with Dark Souls or another Soulslike?
Only at a high level with the available official information. “Soulslike” supplies the publisher’s genre framing, while the first-person camera, Napoleonic setting and blend of melee, firearms and supernatural powers describe this game’s own announced identity. A claim such as “it is Dark Souls with guns” would go further than those facts support: it implies a specific mechanical relationship that has not been established.

The same restraint applies to comparisons with other named titles. The official materials describe Valor Mortis, but do not document the mechanics of particular peers or provide a finished-game comparison. They also do not establish relative difficulty, quality, length, performance or review reception. Those judgments need evidence beyond a feature announcement.
Release date and announced platforms
The latest publisher update covered here, dated August 25, 2026, gives October 13, 2026 as the release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam, and says the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one. An earlier June 7 announcement had given September 24, 2026, so the later date supersedes it. Because the date is still in the future as of October 4, 2026, and subscription catalogs can change, check the relevant storefront or live catalog for current availability.

Its announced combination may be especially interesting to players drawn to Soulslikes but curious about a first-person approach, historical fantasy or a combat toolkit that mixes melee, firearms and supernatural powers. Players who prioritize confirmed difficulty, exact progression rules, map connectivity or a comparison with a particular Soulslike should wait for details that establish those points rather than treating genre labels as proof.
