There is no magic sentence that guarantees a perfect AI image. The reliable approach is to describe the intended result in a clear order: choose the medium, name the subject and action, add visible details, define the visual style, and set the composition. Then generate, inspect the image, and change one or two instructions at a time.

This guide turns that method into a practical workflow, explains how prompt length and syntax differ between generators, and provides 60 starting prompts for photos, portraits, products, landscapes, illustrations, posters, diagrams, and other common jobs.

What is an AI art prompt, and why does its wording matter?

An AI art prompt is a description or instruction that tells an image generator what to create. It can be a short phrase, a paragraph, a structured list, or tool-specific tags and parameters. The prompt does not function like a contract: the same wording can produce different results across models or even across two generations from the same model.

Wording matters because each phrase narrows a different part of the visual brief. “A cat” identifies a subject. “A cream-colored cat with a blue patch over its left eye” adds observable details. “Watercolor” suggests a medium or look, while “soft morning light, close portrait” controls lighting and framing. Combining these directions gives the generator more useful information than a vague request such as “make it beautiful.”

The word perfect should be treated as a goal, not a promise. No consulted source establishes a success rate for a universal formula, and the number of examples in this article is not a performance statistic.

What is the most useful AI prompt structure?

For a first draft, use medium + subject + details + style + composition. Add purpose, setting, and constraints when the image has a specific job or must preserve important elements.

Part What to specify Example
Medium How the image should look as a physical or digital form Editorial photograph, ink sketch, 3D render, oil painting, flat vector illustration
Subject The person, animal, object, place, or scene that must be visible A cyclist repairing a touring bicycle
Details Visible attributes that affect recognition or meaning Red rain jacket, muddy tires, brass tools, wet pavement
Style A coherent visual language, era, mood, or production approach Documentary realism, art deco poster, restrained pastel palette
Composition Viewpoint, framing, placement, lighting, aspect ratio, and negative space Eye-level medium shot, subject on the right, open space on the left for a headline

These categories are not rigid syntax. They are a checklist that helps you decide what the generator must know. If a detail will not change the image’s usefulness, leave it out.

A compact formula

[medium] of [subject doing action], [important details], [style], [setting and lighting], [framing and constraints]

Example: Editorial photograph of a baker scoring a sourdough loaf, flour-dusted hands and linen apron, natural documentary realism, warm window light in a small bakery, eye-level medium shot, 4:3 landscape crop, no visible brand marks.

How do I write an AI art prompt step by step?

Write the brief in this order, then generate a draft and revise only the parts that failed.

  1. Decide the purpose. Identify whether the image is an editorial illustration, product photo, poster, diagram, social graphic, concept sketch, or personal experiment. Purpose determines how polished, literal, or information-dense the result needs to be.
  2. Name the subject and action. State who or what is visible and what it is doing. Add pose, gaze, or interaction when those features carry meaning.
  3. Choose useful visual details. Specify material, texture, color, clothing, weather, architecture, or props only when they affect recognition, mood, or the intended use. Prefer concrete, visible instructions to abstract praise.
  4. Set the style and medium. Decide whether the output should resemble a photograph, watercolor, charcoal drawing, paper collage, 3D render, pixel art, or another coherent approach. You can combine a medium with a period or mood, such as “gouache travel poster with muted mid-century colors.”
  5. Control composition and constraints. Say whether you need a close-up, wide view, overhead shot, centered object, asymmetrical layout, or room for text. Add dimensions or an aspect ratio when the destination requires them. State what must remain unchanged or what should be excluded.
  6. Inspect and revise. Compare the result with your brief. If the pose is right but the lighting is wrong, change the lighting instruction rather than rewriting everything. For edits, identify both the region to change and the elements to preserve.

How specific should the subject, action, and details be?

Be specific about things a viewer can see, count, or locate. “Two children in yellow raincoats jumping over a puddle” gives the model a subject, number, clothing, and action; “a joyful scene” supplies only an emotion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Describe the action and relationship

Use verbs and spatial relationships: “a botanist labeling seedlings at a greenhouse bench,” “a fox looking over its shoulder,” or “three dancers forming a triangle.” For portraits, include pose, gaze, and crop if they matter.

Choose details that survive generation

Material, color, surface texture, weather, and light are usually more useful than a long inventory of adjectives. Prioritize the few details that identify the object or support the story. Too many competing requirements can make the image inconsistent.

Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves

Put essential requirements first and optional embellishments later. If the image is for a layout, “leave clean negative space on the left” is more actionable than “make it professional.”

How long should an AI image prompt be?

Length should match the task and the generator. OpenAI’s current image guidance says a good prompt often needs only one to three clear sentences. Midjourney’s official Prompt Basics guidance says short, simple prompts typically work best there. A complex scene may need a descriptive paragraph, but adding words that do not resolve a visual decision rarely helps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the smallest prompt that states the purpose, subject, style, and composition. Expand it only when a missing requirement causes a visible error. If the model keeps ignoring a detail, move that requirement earlier, make it concrete, or remove conflicting instructions.

How do prompt formats differ between image generators?

The visual concepts are portable, but syntax is not. Use plain language unless the tool’s documentation says that tags, parameters, reference images, or structured data are supported.

Workflow Useful approach What to verify
OpenAI image workflow Use clear sentences or a maintainable structure such as scene, subject, details, and constraints. State intended use, placement, aspect ratio, and what to preserve when editing. Current image-model capabilities, supported sizes, editing controls, and any model-specific limits.
Midjourney Begin with a short description of subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition. Add image prompts, style references, edit references, or parameters only when needed. Current parameter names and placement. Flags for aspect ratio, quality, or stylization are tool-specific and may change.
Other generators Translate the same visual brief into the interface’s fields or prompt box. If it offers separate controls for style, size, or exclusions, use those controls rather than repeating them in prose. Whether the tool interprets weighting, negative prompts, reference images, seed values, or camera terms as documented.

Do not assume that a Midjourney-style flag will work in another service, or that a JSON-like prompt will improve every model. Check the generator’s current official documentation before relying on a parameter in a production workflow.

What are 60 AI art prompt examples for different styles and uses?

These are starting points, not guaranteed recipes. Replace the subject, colors, dimensions, and constraints with your own requirements, and adapt any syntax to the generator you use.

How do I revise a prompt when the result is wrong?

Make a diagnosis before rewriting. Identify the first requirement that failed, then change one focused variable.

  • Wrong subject or count: restate the subject early and give an explicit number, such as “exactly two bicycles.”
  • Wrong pose or viewpoint: use camera and spatial language—“overhead,” “profile,” “subject facing left,” or “hands visible.”
  • Wrong mood: adjust lighting, palette, weather, and time of day rather than adding more emotional adjectives.
  • Cluttered layout: request a simpler background, a single focal subject, and defined negative space.
  • Important object altered during editing: say what must remain unchanged and identify the region to edit.
  • Style overwhelms content: describe the subject and composition first, then reduce or remove competing style terms.

For iterative work, keep a copy of the last prompt that worked. Change one instruction at a time so you can tell which revision caused an improvement or regression.

What are the most common AI art prompting mistakes?

Mistake Why it causes trouble Better approach
Vague praise such as “beautiful” or “professional” The words do not specify a visible result. Describe lighting, materials, palette, framing, and intended use.
Contradictory instructions “Minimal and densely detailed” or “soft light with harsh shadows” gives competing priorities. Choose one dominant treatment and reserve exceptions for a clear purpose.
Long lists of unrelated styles The output can become visually incoherent. Use one medium and one compatible style family, then add a restrained color or mood direction.
Ignoring the destination format A good image may crop badly in a banner, cover, or square post. State orientation, aspect ratio, focal placement, and required negative space.
Assuming parameters are universal Flags and weighting syntax differ by generator. Use the current documentation for the specific tool and model.
Changing everything after a failed generation You lose the ability to identify what fixed the problem. Make a small, targeted revision and compare versions.

How should I use aspect ratio, camera language, and constraints?

Include a dimension or aspect ratio when the output has a known destination: a wide hero image, a vertical cover, or a square thumbnail. If the generator has a size control, set it there and use the prompt to describe composition.

Camera terms can be useful shorthand for photographic intent: macro close-up, wide-angle interior, telephoto wildlife shot, shallow depth of field, or long exposure. They are not guarantees of a physically correct camera simulation, so judge the result visually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Constraints should be concrete and testable. “No visible logos,” “leave the upper-left corner empty,” “show all four legs,” and “preserve the person’s facial expression while changing the background” are clearer than “make it clean.” For text-heavy designs, generate the artwork with a blank area and add final typography in a layout application when the generator cannot reliably render exact wording.

Is it ethical to name an artist or imitate a style?

Product Hunt’s 2023 article recommends considering non-living artists when using an artist reference. That is ethical guidance, not a legal conclusion, and laws and platform policies vary by location and use.

A safer brief describes observable qualities—“limited-palette woodcut, dense cross-hatching, dramatic rim light”—rather than asking for a living artist’s exact signature. Also consider consent and privacy when a prompt depicts an identifiable person, and disclose synthetic imagery when your audience could reasonably mistake it for a documentary photograph.

What is a practical pre-generation checklist?

  • Purpose and destination are clear.
  • The main subject and action are named.
  • Only useful, visible details are included.
  • Medium and style are compatible.
  • Framing, lighting, orientation, and negative space match the layout.
  • Must-preserve and must-exclude elements are stated.
  • Any parameter or reference-image syntax belongs to the selected generator.
  • You have a plan to inspect the output and make a focused revision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reuse the same AI art prompt in every image generator?

You can reuse the visual brief, but not necessarily the syntax. Keep the subject, details, style, and composition in plain language, then translate parameters, reference-image settings, and exclusions for the specific generator.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

How can I get readable text inside an AI-generated poster?

Reserve a clean area for the wording and generate the artwork without relying on the model for exact lettering. Add the final headline, labels, or legal copy in a design tool so spelling, spacing, and accessibility remain under your control.

Should I use a negative prompt?

Only when the selected tool documents negative prompts or exclusion controls. Otherwise, write the desired state directly—for example, “uncluttered background with no visible logos”—and test whether the generator honors that instruction.

How do I keep a person’s identity consistent across edits?

Use the generator’s documented reference-image or edit workflow, describe which facial and clothing features must remain, and change one region at a time. Save the source image and prompt version so you can return to a stable result if a later edit drifts.
