Before dawn on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, the Moon will pass directly in front of Jupiter for observers in parts of North and Central America and some locations in Africa. The event is location-dependent: outside the occultation path, the two will appear close together without the Moon covering Jupiter. Check the prediction for your city before heading out; local times and which parts of the event are visible vary widely.
What happens during the October 6 occultation?
A lunar occultation is an apparent cover-up caused by viewing geometry: from some places on Earth, the nearer Moon crosses in front of a more distant object. On October 6, that object is Jupiter. Observers outside the visibility region will see a close approach instead. The Moon will be a waning crescent, about 20% illuminated, according to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s 2026–2027 Observer’s Handbook.
This is a sequence, not just Jupiter disappearing. Jupiter’s four large Galilean moons—Europa, Callisto, Io, and Ganymede—are involved too. In Sky & Telescope’s account, Europa, Callisto, and Io go behind the Moon before Jupiter; Ganymede emerges about a minute and a half after Jupiter. Jupiter itself takes roughly 60–70 seconds to be covered and a similar time to reappear, owing to its apparent diameter of 33.7 arcseconds. The Moon’s bright limb can make the approach difficult to follow, while Jupiter’s return at the darker limb may be easier to spot.
Where can you see the Moon occult Jupiter?
The occultation is broadly visible across south-central and southeastern Canada, the United States except the Pacific States, and much of Mexico, according to the RASC guide. Timeanddate also describes visibility in parts of North and Central America and some locations in Africa. These are regional summaries, not guarantees for every town: the precise path and the Moon’s position relative to the horizon depend on your location. Sky & Telescope says much of eastern North America can see Jupiter disappear and reappear before dawn. In the mountain states, reappearance may be the only visible part; in the Pacific Time Zone, the pair may instead look like a close conjunction at moonrise.

Use the Sky & Telescope event guide to find the International Occultation Timing Association’s (IOTA) special-event city listing. Choose a nearby location to get the disappearance and reappearance circumstances; do not treat another city’s times as yours. The local horizon, dawn light, and the event phase above the horizon all affect what you can see.
When does Jupiter disappear and reappear?
There is no single clock time for the whole viewing area. These examples from Sky & Telescope are local times for when the Moon’s edge bisects Jupiter; first contact begins roughly a minute earlier. The source directs U.S. readers to convert from Eastern Daylight Time by subtracting four hours for EDT, five for CDT, six for MDT, or seven for PDT.

A separate local example illustrates how the moons add to the sequence. For a Virginia Beach event, NASA’s Night Sky Network page for Back Bay Amateur Astronomers lists Europa’s first contact at 4:14 a.m. EDT, Jupiter’s first contact at 4:20 a.m., Jupiter beginning to emerge at 5:24 a.m. and fully visible at 5:26 a.m., and Ganymede emerging at 5:27 a.m. These are Virginia Beach circumstances only, not a schedule for other locations. See the NASA Night Sky Network events page.
How to improve your chances of seeing it
- Check your city’s circumstances. Use the IOTA event listing linked by Sky & Telescope for local contact times and visibility. Confirm whether disappearance, reappearance, or both occur while Jupiter is above your horizon.
- Find a clear eastern view. The event is low in the sky for many observers, so choose a spot without trees, buildings, or other obstructions toward the east. At the start of occultation, Sky & Telescope gives the Moon’s altitude as 23° in Boston but only 4° in Kansas City—a substantial difference for horizon visibility.
- Account for glare and equipment. Jupiter is bright and can be found without optical aid, but the Moon’s illuminated edge may overwhelm it as it approaches. Binoculars are optional if glare is a problem; a telescope can provide a closer view if you already have one. The cited observing guidance does not establish a required magnification or specific model.
- Check the forecast and arrive early. Clouds can erase the view, and the short contacts are easy to miss if you are still setting up. Give yourself time to locate Jupiter and watch the approach.
Why this event is unusual for a particular location
Jupiter occultations occur on average about every 13 years for a particular location, according to Joe Rao in Sky & Telescope. That is a location-specific average, not a promise of a worldwide event on that schedule. The chance to see the cover-up depends on being inside the occultation path and having a clear, unobstructed view at the relevant local time.

- PATENTED STARSENSE TECHNOLOGY: Unlike other astronomy apps, StarSense Explorer uses sky recognition technology to turn your phone into a celestial navigation system, analyzing star patterns overhead to pinpoint your telescope’s position.
- TONIGHT’S BEST TARGETS, INSTANTLY: The app generates a curated list of the top objects to see based on your time and location. See planets, bright nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters from the city—and even more from dark skies.
- SIMPLE SETUP, SMOOTH TRACKING: Features a manual altazimuth mount with altitude slow motion adjustment with a sliding rod. Follow the on-screen arrows to your target; when the bullseye turns green, you can view it clearly through the eyepiece.
- 114MM REFLECTOR WITH IMPRESSIVE VIEWS: The 4.5" Newtonian reflector with high-reflectivity coatings delivers sharp, vivid views of the Moon, planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy.
For observers who want to record timings or conditions more systematically, the RASC handbook points to IOTA prediction and observing resources and describes Occult4 as free Windows software. Those tools are optional; a casual observer only needs a suitable local prediction and a clear view.
