For a first viewing, watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) theatrical films in the order they were originally released. The film-only sequence below is grouped by year, with titles kept in release order within each year. It is not the MCU’s in-universe timeline order.
MCU theatrical films in release order
This is the conventional film-only theatrical sequence, through the films released in 2025. Marvel’s historical catalog covers the earlier slate through Avengers: Endgame; Marvel and Disney film pages confirm the three listed 2025 release dates. The complete sequence below is not presented as a newly audited studio master list.
- 2008: Iron Man; The Incredible Hulk.
- 2010: Iron Man 2.
- 2011: Thor; Captain America: The First Avenger.
- 2012: The Avengers.
- 2013: Iron Man 3; Thor: The Dark World.
- 2014: Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Guardians of the Galaxy.
- 2015: Avengers: Age of Ultron; Ant-Man.
- 2016: Captain America: Civil War; Doctor Strange.
- 2017: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; Spider-Man: Homecoming; Thor: Ragnarok.
- 2018: Black Panther; Avengers: Infinity War; Ant-Man and the Wasp.
- 2019: Captain Marvel; Avengers: Endgame; Spider-Man: Far From Home.
- 2021: Black Widow; Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; Eternals; Spider-Man: No Way Home.
- 2022: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; Thor: Love and Thunder; Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
- 2023: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3; The Marvels.
- 2024: Deadpool & Wolverine.
- 2025: Captain America: Brave New World (February 14); Thunderbolts (May 2); The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25).
For reference, Marvel lists the U.S. release date of Avengers: Endgame as April 26, 2019: Marvel’s film page.
Release order versus timeline order
Release order means the order audiences first encountered the films. Timeline order rearranges them according to when their events occur in the MCU’s fictional chronology. Those are different viewing routes, not competing versions of the same list.

For a first watch, release order is the straightforward choice: it preserves the intended sequence of reveals and reduces the chance of encountering a later-film spoiler early. Marvel offers a separate timeline experience on Disney+ and describes its Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline book as a guide to connections across films and television. The book is optional, not a requirement for following the movies. Marvel’s book announcement.
Do you need to watch MCU shows and specials?
No. The sequence above is limited to MCU theatrical films; it excludes television series and specials. Some of those other stories connect to the films, and Marvel’s timeline guide spans both movies and television, but they are not needed to use this film-only release list. If you later want a broader MCU chronology, use Marvel’s Disney+ timeline experience as a separate guide rather than inserting shows into this sequence.

Where can you stream the films?
Check the Disney+ catalog in your country, or the current catalogs of licensed services available where you live. Streaming rights and title availability change over time and vary by region. Marvel’s 2020 roundup of MCU films on Disney+ is historical, not a promise that the same titles are available now: Marvel’s 2020 Disney+ roundup. Marvel’s 2021 IMAX Enhanced announcement also notes regional variation in content availability: Marvel’s IMAX Enhanced announcement.
