For a first viewing, watch the Hellraiser films in release order. That sequence follows the franchise’s changing mythology, introduces its characters as audiences originally met them, and prevents later films from spoiling production-era surprises. The 11-film release run is Hellraiser (1987), Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996), Hellraiser: Inferno (2000), Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002), Hellraiser: Deader (2005), Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005), Hellraiser: Revelations (2011), Hellraiser: Judgment (2018), and Hellraiser (2022).
A chronological viewing is possible only as a practical approximation. Bloodline jumps across historical periods and reaches the year 2127, while Hellworld is intentionally meta and does not sit cleanly inside the ordinary timeline. The 2022 film is a separate Hulu reimagining of the 1987 original, not a continuation that requires the earlier movies.
The complete release order
Release order is the best default because it preserves the franchise’s actual rollout. It also shows how the series moved from Clive Barker’s original puzzle-box mythology to sequels, direct-to-video stories, and finally a standalone reimagining.

| # | Film | Release year | What its position tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hellraiser | 1987 | The Clive Barker original and the starting point for the puzzle box and Cenobite mythology. |
| 2 | Hellbound: Hellraiser II | 1988 | A direct sequel that continues Kirsty Cotton’s story. |
| 3 | Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth | 1992 | Moves the setting to New York and expands Pinhead’s role. |
| 4 | Hellraiser: Bloodline | 1996 | The fourth theatrical-era release; its story is told across several time periods. |
| 5 | Hellraiser: Inferno | 2000 | The first entry released straight to video, according to JustWatch’s franchise guide. |
| 6 | Hellraiser: Hellseeker | 2002 | Returns Kirsty Cotton to the series. |
| 7 | Hellraiser: Deader | 2005 | Follows a journalist investigating a resurrection cult connected to the puzzle box. |
| 8 | Hellraiser: Hellworld | 2005 | A meta story built around a Hellraiser-inspired online game, making its continuity deliberately unstable. |
| 9 | Hellraiser: Revelations | 2011 | A later standalone sequel involving two friends and the puzzle box. |
| 10 | Hellraiser: Judgment | 2018 | A later sequel with an investigative and religious-horror angle. |
| 11 | Hellraiser | 2022 | David Bruckner’s Hulu reimagining, with Clive Barker as a producer; it is separate from the earlier continuity. |
The list contains 11 feature films released from 1987 through 2022. The 2005 pair should remain in release order: Deader first, then the deliberately meta Hellworld.

A practical chronological order
There is no single, scene-by-scene chronology that places every film without qualification. The first three films form the clearest early sequence. The later stories are mostly contemporary-set adventures whose exact positions relative to one another are not established by the available franchise guide. Bloodline is the major exception: its narrative spans multiple eras and reaches a far-future endpoint in 2127.
| Chronological slot | Film | How to interpret the placement |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hellraiser (1987) | Begin with the original puzzle-box and Cenobite story. |
| 2 | Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) | Directly follows the first film and continues Kirsty’s story. |
| 3 | Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) | Follows the first two films while shifting the action to New York. |
| 4 | Hellraiser: Inferno (2000) | A practical next stop for the first later, contemporary-set story. |
| 5 | Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002) | Keep after Inferno when using the later films’ release-era sequence; Kirsty returns here. |
| 6 | Hellraiser: Deader (2005) | A contemporary investigation involving a resurrection cult. |
| 7 | Hellraiser: Revelations (2011) | Another later standalone sequel. |
| 8 | Hellraiser: Judgment (2018) | The later investigative and religious-horror entry. |
| 9 | Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996 release) | Place last if you are sorting by the timeline’s farthest endpoint; the story reaches 2127 even though the film was released fourth. |
| Optional | Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005) | Watch separately as a meta experiment rather than forcing it into a precise chronological slot. |
| Separate continuity | Hellraiser (2022) | Watch independently; it reinvents the 1987 premise rather than continuing this sequence. |
This arrangement is a viewing aid, not a claim that every later film has a documented calendar date. If your goal is a clean narrative progression rather than timeline experimentation, release order remains the more reliable choice.

Why release order usually works better
| What you care about | Release order | Practical chronological approach |
|---|---|---|
| Narrative continuity | Shows the clearest handoff from the original through its direct sequel and later extensions. | Preserves the early trilogy but becomes approximate once the later contemporary stories begin. |
| Spoiler control | Matches the order in which reveals and franchise changes were designed to appear. | Can expose Bloodline’s time-spanning premise before you have seen the films that preceded its release. |
| Production history | Makes the transition from theatrical releases to straight-to-video sequels visible. | Reorders a 1996 release behind films made much later. |
| Bloodline | Places it fourth, as audiences originally encountered it. | Places it last only when “chronological” means the latest point reached is watched last. |
| Hellworld | Keeps the meta entry in its 2005 position. | Leaves it outside the main timeline because its premise questions the continuity itself. |
| 2022 reimagining | Ends the full release list with the modern standalone film. | Can be watched at any time after the original, or as a separate double feature with the 1987 movie. |
Where Hellraiser: Bloodline belongs
Bloodline is the film most likely to cause confusion. It was the fourth movie released, in 1996, but its narrative is constructed across multiple periods rather than one continuous present-day setting. The timeline ultimately reaches 2127. That makes it chronologically last if you sort the films by the farthest future point they depict, even though watching it fourth is correct for release order.
Do not treat “last chronologically” as meaning that every scene occurs after every scene in the other movies. Its historical sections occur earlier, while its endpoint is later. For a first pass, watch it fourth and accept the time shifts as part of the film’s design. For a timeline-focused marathon, save it until after the other mainline entries so its 2127 endpoint functions as the final historical destination.

Why Hellworld does not fit a normal timeline
Hellworld is built around an online game inspired by Hellraiser. Its meta premise makes the boundary between the fictional game, the characters’ experience, and the franchise world intentionally unstable. Assigning it a precise year alongside the other sequels gives a false sense of continuity.
Use one of two sensible approaches: keep it eighth in release order, or mark it as an optional detour after the main chronological run. The second approach is preferable when you want the timeline to remain readable. It is not a missing link that must be inserted between Deader and Revelations.

How the 2022 film connects to the franchise
The 2022 Hellraiser is a standalone Hulu horror feature and a reinvention of Clive Barker’s 1987 film. Paramount lists a 120-minute runtime and an October 7, 2022 premiere. Its premise again centers on a young woman who comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box and summons Cenobites, but the film is not presented as a continuation requiring knowledge of the 1987–2018 run.
You can therefore watch it in three ways:
- As the final release-order film: complete the 10 earlier releases, then watch the 2022 reimagining.
- As a paired comparison: watch the 1987 original and the 2022 reinvention back to back to compare how each introduces the puzzle box and Cenobites.
- As an entry point: start with 2022 if you want a modern standalone film, then return to the 1987 original and continue in release order.
Only the first option belongs in the complete release list. The other two are viewing strategies, not alternate continuity claims.

Recommended watch plans
First-time marathon
- Watch the 11 films in release order, beginning with Hellraiser (1987).
- Keep the two 2005 films together in their release sequence: Deader, then Hellworld.
- Finish with the 2022 film as a separate reimagining.
This plan gives you the strongest spoiler control and the clearest sense of how the franchise evolved.
Continuity-focused marathon
- Watch the original trilogy: Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, and Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth.
- Continue through the later contemporary-set stories in their release-era sequence: Inferno, Hellseeker, Deader, Revelations, and Judgment.
- Watch Bloodline last among the connected-era films if you want its 2127 endpoint to close the historical timeline.
- Place Hellworld wherever you prefer as an optional meta entry.
- Watch the 2022 film separately.
Short introduction to the franchise
If 11 films are too much for one sitting, start with the 1987 original and its direct sequel, Hellbound: Hellraiser II. They establish the core mythology and Kirsty Cotton’s role. Add Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth to complete the early trilogy, then decide whether you want the broader release-order marathon or the timeline experiment.
Finding the films to stream, rent, or buy
Streaming rights for this series are not fixed. Catalogs differ by country and can change between the date you plan a marathon and the date you search. A service that lists one film today may show a rental, purchase, or no listing tomorrow.
- Check your country first. Search the exact film title, including its year, because the 1987 and 2022 films share the name Hellraiser.
- Use a current availability guide. JustWatch reports streaming, rental, and purchase options and performs dated service checks, but its results are territory-specific and volatile.
- Confirm the transaction type. “Available” may mean included with a subscription, a one-time rental, or a digital purchase. Check the price and rental window on the service before starting.
- Verify the edition. Confirm that the listing is the intended film, especially for Hellraiser (1987), Hellraiser (2022), and the similarly titled sequels.
- Check physical media when digital rights are split. The Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment 4K Ultra HD collection packages the first four films and includes a workprint. Verify the current edition, disc region, included cuts, and retailer listing before buying.
No single service should be assumed to carry all 11 films in every country. A mixed plan—subscription streaming for some entries, rentals for others, and physical media for the remainder—may be necessary.
Common watch-order mistakes
- Starting with Bloodline because it has the earliest historical scenes: its story is nonlinear, and its 2127 endpoint does not make it a conventional prequel.
- Putting Hellworld into a precise year: its meta construction is the reason a strict slot is unreliable.
- Assuming the 2022 film is Hellraiser XI in the old continuity: it is a Hulu reimagining, not a required sequel.
- Sorting only by the year shown in a streaming app: listings can use upload dates, remaster dates, or regional metadata rather than original release years.
- Expecting one subscription to include the entire series: rights vary by territory, title, and date.
Bottom line for your marathon
Choose release order unless you have a specific reason to experiment with chronology: Hellraiser (1987), Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Hellraiser: Bloodline, Inferno, Hellseeker, Deader, Hellworld, Revelations, Judgment, and finally Hellraiser (2022). Use the chronological arrangement as a qualified guide, keep Hellworld optional, and treat the 2022 film as its own continuity.
