Watch Street Fighter adaptations in release order. They are separate interpretations rather than one continuous screen canon, so release order is the least confusing way to see how the franchise has been reimagined across live action, Japanese animation, Western television and web productions. Start with the 1994 live-action Street Fighter, then watch the 1994 animated feature, the two 1990s television adaptations, the Alpha-era films, the Chun-Li film, the Street Fighter IV tie-in, and the Assassin’s Fist productions. Treat the announced new live-action film as a planned 2026 entry until its release is confirmed in your country.

Recommended release order

The list below is the practical first-watch sequence. The year is the original release period identified for each production; market-specific home-video dates can differ.

  1. Street Fighter (1994) — live-action Hollywood adaptation.
  2. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994) — Japanese animated feature drawing on the Street Fighter II era.
  3. Street Fighter II V (1995) — Japanese animated television series and a separate interpretation from the 1994 animated movie.
  4. Street Fighter: The Animated Series (1995–1997) — Western animated television series.
  5. Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation (1999/2000) — OVA-style animated feature; release-year labeling varies by market.
  6. Street Fighter Alpha: Generations (2005) — animated OVA/feature centered on the Alpha-era cast.
  7. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) — live-action character-focused film.
  8. Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind (2009) — animated feature connected to the Street Fighter IV game era.
  9. Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist (2014) — live-action origin story first released as a web series and also presented as a film.
  10. Street Fighter: Resurrection (2016) — live-action follow-up from the Assassin’s Fist production line.
  11. New live-action Street Fighter film — announced by Capcom and Legendary in 2023, with filming and principal-character casting reported in 2025 and an October 2026 release plan listed in later corporate material. Confirm its actual release and local availability before watching.

Why release order works better than story chronology

There is no single screen continuity that joins these films and series into one timeline. The Japanese game-inspired anime, the Western cartoon, the live-action movies and the web productions each make different choices about character histories, tone and the era of the games they draw from. A chronology assembled across all of them would therefore imply connections that the productions do not share.

The two 1994 releases are the clearest example. The live-action Street Fighter and Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie are parallel adaptations, not a movie followed by its sequel. Watching them back-to-back is useful because it lets you compare two very different readings of the same game property without expecting one to resolve the other.

Release order also shows the franchise’s changing formats. It begins with a Hollywood feature and a Japanese animated feature, expands into two television interpretations in 1995, revisits the Alpha game era through OVA-style productions, then moves through a character-led live-action film, a Street Fighter IV companion, and the web-to-film Assassin’s Fist line.

The 1994 starting point

Street Fighter (1994)

This is the first live-action Hollywood adaptation and the correct opening entry if you want to follow screen history from the beginning. It is not a prologue to the animated movie released in the same year, and nothing in the viewing order requires you to choose one as the “real” version of the other.

Watch it first when your priority is seeing how a major studio translated the arcade fighting-game concept into live action. Because it is an independent adaptation, you can move directly to the next title without needing to reconcile its continuity with later anime.

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994)

This Japanese animated feature is the central recommendation for viewers who want the classic game-era ensemble in a feature-length anime story. It is often the most useful first stop for the franchise’s animated side because it gives the Street Fighter II period a focused film treatment rather than asking you to commit to a television season.

Do not treat it as a sequel to the 1994 live-action film. The two projects were released in the same year, but they are independent interpretations. If you are deciding between the pair, choose this movie for animation and the classic Street Fighter II-era cast; choose the live-action film for a Hollywood adaptation.

The two 1995 television interpretations

Street Fighter II V (1995)

Street Fighter II V is a Japanese animated television series that offers its own interpretation of the Street Fighter II period. It shares franchise characters with the 1994 animated feature, but it is not a continuation of that movie and should not be inserted into its plot as a second season.

Watch it after the two 1994 features because that preserves release order and makes the adaptation differences easy to see. If you are choosing between this series and the earlier animated film for a limited schedule, the movie is the shorter feature introduction; this series is the choice when you want a longer television interpretation of the same broad game era.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Street Fighter: The Animated Series (1995–1997)

This Western animated television series is another separate branch. Its use of Street Fighter characters does not place it in the same continuity as Street Fighter II V, the Japanese feature or the live-action films.

It belongs immediately after Street Fighter II V in release order because both began in the mid-1990s, but the order is about production history rather than a shared storyline. Select it when you want a Western television-cartoon approach; do not start it expecting the visual style or narrative structure of Japanese anime.

Alpha-era animated branches

Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation (1999/2000)

This OVA-style animated feature is associated with the Street Fighter Alpha era. Sources and releases label its year as 1999 or 2000 depending on the market, so both dates appear in watch-order references.

It is best treated as an optional branch after the 1990s core entries, not as the next chapter of either 1994 movie or either television series. The Alpha label signals the game-era focus, while the OVA-style format makes it a compact feature experience rather than a long-running series.

Street Fighter Alpha: Generations (2005)

Alpha: Generations is a later animated OVA/feature that also focuses on the Alpha-era cast. Place it after Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation because that follows release order and keeps the two Alpha-related productions together.

The pair is optional for viewers whose main interest is the classic Street Fighter II material. Choose these entries when you specifically want an Alpha-era interpretation; they are not required to understand the independent films, the Western cartoon or the later Street Fighter IV companion.

The 2009 live-action and Street Fighter IV entries

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009)

This live-action film is character-focused, with Chun-Li at its center rather than functioning as a continuation of the 1994 live-action movie. Its placement in the list reflects release order, not a claim that all of the live-action films share one uninterrupted story.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Watch it after the Alpha-era animated productions if you want the complete release sequence. If your interest is specifically Chun-Li, it can also be selected as a standalone branch because its focus is narrower than an ensemble adaptation.

Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind (2009)

This animated feature is connected to the Street Fighter IV game era. That connection makes it different from the broadly independent 1990s adaptations, but it still functions as a game-era tie-in rather than a universal bridge joining every previous screen production.

Keep it after The Legend of Chun-Li in release order. Viewers following the Street Fighter IV branch can watch it as a companion to that game era; viewers interested only in the earliest animated material can skip ahead without losing the continuity of the 1994 and 1995 entries.

The Assassin’s Fist production line

Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist (2014)

Assassin’s Fist is a live-action origin story that first appeared as a web series and was also presented in film form. That dual format is why listings can look different depending on whether a service catalogs the episodes or the compiled film presentation.

Watch it after the 2009 entries. It is its own live-action production line, so you do not need to place it directly after the 1994 or Chun-Li films as though those stories lead into it. If you prefer serialized viewing, use the web-series presentation where available; if a service offers only the film presentation, that is the same production in a different format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Street Fighter: Resurrection (2016)

Resurrection is the live-action follow-up to the Assassin’s Fist line. It is the one pairing in this list where a direct production relationship is central to the viewing choice: watch Assassin’s Fist first, then Resurrection.

Do not use Resurrection as a sequel to the 1994 Hollywood film or to The Legend of Chun-Li. Its follow-up status applies to the Assassin’s Fist production, not to every earlier live-action adaptation.

What to do with the new live-action film

Capcom announced in 2023 that it would jointly produce a live-action film and a television series based on Street Fighter with Legendary Entertainment. Reporting in 2025 described filming and principal-character casting, while later corporate material listed an October 2026 planned release.

For a guide published before a confirmed release in your territory, list this project as announced or planned rather than as a film you can already watch. Release schedules, theatrical bookings and home availability can change. Recheck the local cinema listings or the distributor’s current announcement when the date approaches. If the film has opened by the time you read this, add it after Resurrection for release-order viewing; if not, stop at the 2016 entry.

Choosing a shorter route

You do not need to watch every branch to understand the franchise’s screen history. Use the route that matches the kind of adaptation you want.

For one essential animated feature

Choose Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. It is the clearest feature-length introduction to the classic game-era cast and does not require knowledge of the other screen versions.

For the complete 1990s experiment

Watch the two 1994 features, then Street Fighter II V and Street Fighter: The Animated Series. This sequence compares live action, Japanese animation and Western television without mixing their continuities.

For Alpha-era material

Watch Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation, followed by Street Fighter Alpha: Generations. These are optional side adaptations after the 1990s core, not prerequisites for the later live-action productions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a live-action-focused path

Start with the 1994 live-action film, continue to The Legend of Chun-Li, then watch Assassin’s Fist and Resurrection. This is a format-based route, not a claim that all four stories share one canon.

For Street Fighter IV context

Use The Ties That Bind as the relevant animated entry. It is tied to the Street Fighter IV era and can be watched independently of the 1990s anime branches.

Where to watch and how availability affects the order

Streaming rights are territory- and date-dependent, so a service that carries a title in one country may not carry it in another. At the availability snapshot used for this guide, JustWatch listed Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie on Prime Video and through Crunchyroll-related options in the United States, alongside digital rental or purchase and DVD/Blu-ray purchase paths. Check the current JustWatch listing for your country before starting a subscription or rental.

Catalog records can also differ by format. A web production may appear as episodes or as a compiled movie, and a title may move between subscription streaming, digital stores and physical media. Search by the complete title, year and format when a broad “Street Fighter” search returns the wrong adaptation.

Is there a Street Fighter 4K Blu-ray?

A concrete physical option is the Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie 4K UHD/Blu-ray release associated with Discotek. It is the strongest 4K-searchable choice for this watch-order guide, but region compatibility, stock and retailer listings can change. Confirm the disc region and the player requirements before buying; do not assume that a 4K label guarantees identical compatibility in every country.

The existence of a 4K release for this animated feature does not mean every Street Fighter film or series has a 4K edition. Treat each title’s physical format as a separate availability question and verify the specific release rather than extrapolating from one upgraded edition.

Why these adaptations matter in the larger franchise

Street Fighter’s unusually broad screen history follows the scale of the game series itself. Capcom identifies the original arcade launch as 1987 and Street Fighter II’s 1991 release as the point at which the series established its popularity. In a 2017 30th-anniversary feature, Capcom described cumulative sales of 39 million units at that time.

Those milestones help explain why no single adaptation became the only screen version. Different productions arrived during different game eras and targeted different formats: a Hollywood feature, a Japanese anime movie, two television series, Alpha-era OVAs, a Chun-Li-centered film, a Street Fighter IV companion and a web-origin live-action story. The result is a library of interpretations rather than a linear saga.

Common watch-order mistakes

  • Putting the 1994 animated movie after the 1994 live-action film as a sequel. They are parallel adaptations.
  • Assuming Street Fighter II V continues the animated movie. It is a separate Japanese television interpretation.
  • Treating the Western animated series as part of the Japanese anime continuity. It is its own branch.
  • Using Alpha titles as mandatory chapters. They are optional game-era side adaptations.
  • Calling the 2026 film released before confirmation. The October 2026 date is a plan; check local release status.
  • Assuming every listing has the same format. Assassin’s Fist can appear as a web series or film presentation, and availability changes by market.
  • Buying a disc without checking region support. The 4K UHD/Blu-ray listing is region-sensitive, as are many physical releases.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
