Start by identifying what disappeared: a local broadcast station such as your local ABC affiliate, or a cable-only network such as ESPN or CNN. An antenna can receive local over-the-air broadcasts, but it cannot bring back a cable-only network. Your next best option depends on whether you want the live channel or just particular shows.
Why a channel may disappear
A provider can stop carrying a station when it and the station do not reach a carriage agreement. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) explains that, in this situation, the provider is required by law to stop carrying the station until an agreement is reached. Its advisory, How to Receive a Broadcast TV Station if It Is Dropped from Your Pay TV Service, concerns local broadcast stations; a cable-only network is a different case.
First identify what you lost
- Local broadcast station: A local affiliate of ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, or another broadcast network. Try an antenna if your home can receive its over-the-air signal.
- Cable-only network: A network such as ESPN or CNN. An antenna will not restore it; check streaming packages or network apps instead.
Options for a dropped local broadcast station
Check whether an antenna can receive it
An over-the-air (OTA) antenna receives local broadcast signals directly, without relying on your pay-TV provider’s carriage agreement. Reception varies with location, terrain, obstructions, antenna placement, and setup. Mountains or valleys can block broadcasts, and some rural locations may not have local signals available. Before buying equipment, check likely reception at your address using a local coverage tool or antenna retailer’s address-based lookup.
To try an antenna, connect it to your television’s antenna input and run the TV’s channel scan. If you use an OTA tuner or DVR, connect the antenna to that device and follow its instructions to scan for channels. Tablo notes that an OTA antenna is required for its tuner to receive local broadcast stations; its local-channel troubleshooting guide also describes geographic limits.

Try the broadcaster’s app or website
A broadcaster may offer programming through its official app or website. Access can require you to sign in with your TV provider, and the available content may not include the full live channel. AT&T lists ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and CW apps and websites, with provider sign-in where prompted, in its broadcaster app guide. Check the specific station’s current access rules rather than assuming an app will replace the dropped feed.
Options for a dropped cable-only network
Look for the show, not just the live channel
If you want particular episodes rather than continuous live programming, check the network’s official app or website. Some services use TV Everywhere authentication: you sign in through a participating pay-TV provider, and access depends on whether your package includes the network. Even then, the selection can be limited. Roku explains that network licensing decisions affect which episodes are available; older seasons may be missing, and package or provider-verification requirements can prevent access. Check live-TV streaming packages
Paid live-TV streaming services may carry a cable network or a local affiliate, but availability varies by service and market. Check the exact channel lineup for your ZIP code before subscribing, including whether the service carries the local affiliate you need. Also review regional restrictions, blackout terms, authentication requirements, and any add-ons needed. - Exact availability: Does the option carry the specific network and, where relevant, your local affiliate in your ZIP code?
- What you need to watch: Do you need the live linear channel, or are selected on-demand shows enough?
- Costs: Compare antenna or tuner equipment costs with recurring subscription charges, and check for required add-ons.
- Signal and restrictions: For an antenna, assess reception at your home. For an app or streaming service, check authentication rules, regional restrictions, and blackouts.
- Future availability: A different provider is not a permanent guarantee. Frontier notes that streaming services and TV providers also face network negotiations and programming changes on its channel updates page.
