Passes are limited and offered to Unst residents first; a launch window can last weeks, so it is not a confirmed launch date. Check SaxaVord’s latest updates before making travel plans, and do not approach the launch site or enter a closed road or exclusion zone.
How public viewing works
SaxaVord Spaceport, on Lamba Ness on Unst in Shetland, says it will offer a limited number of passes for an authorised viewing area. Unst residents are offered passes first; any places not taken up may then be offered more widely. SaxaVord’s homepage states a maximum of 600 viewer passes. That is an announced cap, not a guarantee that 600 passes will be available for every launch.
Detailed arrangements are to be published nearer test-flight or launch days. As of 3 October 2026, the operator’s public information did not establish an application form, price, named viewing location or pass-release date. Check the viewing-pass announcement and SaxaVord news page for the arrangements for a particular event.
Understand the launch window before you travel
A launch window is a period in which a launch may take place, not a promise that the rocket will fly on a particular date. SaxaVord says a window may last several weeks, with launches possible only on designated days and within specified hours. The operator’s published policy is to give at least 24 hours’ notice of a planned launch; that notice does not guarantee the attempt will proceed.

Keep plans flexible and check for updates close to your intended visit. The operator’s public pages checked on 3 October 2026 did not establish a confirmed launch date. A broad window alone is a weak basis for non-refundable travel.
Follow access rules and safety instructions
SaxaVord says a defined exclusion zone and road closures will be in force on launch days. Pass holders must follow local access arrangements to reach the authorised viewing area. Do not enter restricted land or maritime areas, bypass barriers, or try to watch from a closed road. Follow current instructions from the operator and relevant authorities.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority describes SaxaVord’s range-control licence as covering safety-critical services before and during launches, and as vital to public safety. This licence information is not a spectator schedule or permission to access the site. The CAA’s explanation is available in its SaxaVord range-licence announcement.
A UK Hydrographic Office notice for a July–August 2026 launch window described temporary maritime hazard areas and warned mariners to avoid them during the launch period. It illustrates why launch-specific notices matter; it is not a current spectator schedule or notice for a future launch. Mariners can consult the UK Hydrographic Office notice.

Decide whether an in-person trip is worth it
Getting to Unst typically involves travelling to Shetland by air or sea and then taking inter-island ferries. SaxaVord notes that Unst has mainly single-track roads, limited accommodation and ferry capacity that can be in high demand. Check ferry availability, onward transport and lodging directly for your dates before committing money.
For people outside Shetland, SaxaVord recommends its livestream as the lower-commitment option, citing the length of the test-flight window and the time and cost of travel. CEO Scott Hammond said in the operator’s 10 March 2026 announcement: “Due to the fact that this will be a test flight and the length of the launch window, if you live outwith Shetland I would recommend that you watch it on the livestream rather than bear the cost and time involved with travelling here only to be disappointed.” SaxaVord says launches will be livestreamed; check its announcements for the viewing link and details.

- Consider going in person if you can obtain a pass, secure transport and accommodation, and accept that the launch may be delayed or rescheduled within its window.
- Choose the livestream if you live outside Shetland, cannot make flexible travel plans, or would not want the trip if the rocket does not fly on the first advertised day.
If you already have an authorised pass, compact binoculars may help with distant viewing, depending on the site’s sightlines. SaxaVord has not published a viewing-distance or equipment recommendation.

A spaceport or launch licence does not confirm a public viewing opportunity or a launch date. The CAA’s licences and registers page lists licence information, while SaxaVord’s news page is the place to check for operator announcements and viewing details. SaxaVord has described capacity for up to 30 launches a year once the spaceport build is complete; that is a stated future capacity, not the current launch rate or an annual schedule.
