Check the care label sewn into your jacket first; instructions can vary by model. For the current Patagonia Men’s Down Sweater, the label says to machine wash cold, do not bleach, tumble dry low, do not iron, and, for best results, dry with two tennis balls. Patagonia also recommends a down-specific cleaner and drying the jacket completely before storing it.

Before you wash the jacket

  1. Read the sewn-in care label. Patagonia’s online instructions for the Men’s Down Sweater are model-specific, not a substitute for the label on another jacket. Follow your garment’s directions if they differ. Patagonia’s care and repair hub provides general guidance.
  2. Choose a cleaner made for down. Patagonia recommends down-specific cleaner because conventional detergent can strip down’s natural oils or leave residue. Its down-care guide names Nikwax Down Wash as one effective option, not a required brand. Follow the cleaner’s dosing directions.
  3. Use a front-loading washer if available. Patagonia’s 2011 guide prefers front-loaders because top-loader agitation can snag or damage lightweight garments. It says a gentle top-loader may suit some lighter items, but cautions against using one for thick jackets and parkas. Treat this older advice as supplemental to your jacket’s current label.
  4. Optional: pretreat dirty spots. For heavily soiled cuffs or the neck, Patagonia’s older guide suggests spot-treating with fabric stain remover before washing. Follow that product’s label.

How to machine wash a Patagonia down jacket

  1. Place the jacket in the washer and select the cycle and temperature stated on its care label. For the current Men’s Down Sweater, Patagonia specifies a cold machine wash.
  2. Use the down-specific cleaner according to its bottle directions. Do not bleach, and do not use fabric softener; Patagonia’s care guidance advises against it.
  3. When the wash is finished, check that no cleaner residue remains. Patagonia’s 2011 guide suggests an additional rinse or wash cycle without soap as an optional thorough-rinse measure; it is not a universal label requirement.

How to dry it without leaving clumps

  1. Tumble dry on low heat if the label allows. Patagonia specifies low-heat tumble drying for the current Men’s Down Sweater. Add two clean tennis balls: the current product care instructions recommend them for best results, and Patagonia’s older guide explains that they help break up clumps. They are helpful, not a required purchase.
  2. Check the jacket periodically. Down can take multiple dryer cycles. Remove the jacket now and then and gently separate clumps by hand so the filling dries evenly.
  3. Wait until it is completely dry before storing it. A jacket can feel dry while down inside is still damp. Patagonia warns that packed, damp down can develop mildew, so do not put the jacket away until it is dry throughout.
  4. Do not iron the current Down Sweater. Its care instructions say not to iron.

If you cannot use a dryer

Patagonia’s 2011 guide describes air drying as an option when a dryer is unsuitable, but says it takes patience and regular attention. Drying may take a couple of days or more than a week depending on humidity. Keep checking the jacket and separating clumps, and do not store it until it is fully dry. Follow the sewn-in label if it gives different instructions.

What to do about a protruding feather or small hole

If a feather is sticking out but the shell has no hole, do not pull the feather out; Patagonia says to work it back inside. For a small shell hole, Patagonia recommends fabric repair tape, including Gear Aid Tenacious Tape or Patagonia’s Worn Wear Patch Kit. Its small-hole repair guide says to let a patch set for 24 hours before washing. For larger damage, contact Patagonia’s repair service rather than treating tape as a structural repair.
