Yes—you can start vibe coding without paying for software. The most practical route is an eligible individual account on GitHub Copilot Free, while Ollama provides an optional local-model route if your computer has enough memory. Neither path is unlimited: hosted tools enforce quotas, and local tools trade subscription costs for hardware and setup.

Choose the cost boundary before you choose a tool

“Free” can mean three different things:

  • No subscription: you use a hosted free tier with a monthly allowance.
  • No hosted-inference bill: you run a model on your own computer, paying with electricity, storage and setup time instead.
  • Almost free: you begin on a free tier but accept that additional usage may require payment.

For most beginners, start with the first option. Do not buy a graphics card or new computer just to test whether vibe coding suits you.

Best-supported free starting point: GitHub Copilot Free

What the plan includes

GitHub documents Copilot Free for eligible individual developers. Its published allowance is 2,000 inline code completions per month, plus a limited allowance of AI credits for chat and agent features. Free-plan model access uses automatic selection rather than letting you freely choose a model.

The allowance is not a promise of a fixed number of complete applications or prompts. A small, focused edit and a long agent session consume usage differently, so watch the account’s current meter rather than estimating how many projects the quota will cover.

Who may be ineligible

Eligibility can be affected by a managed account, an organization-provided seat, an existing subscription or another entitlement. If the free option is missing, check which GitHub account and billing arrangement you are using before assuming the service is broken.

A low-cost workflow that stretches the quota

  1. Create or use an eligible individual GitHub account and activate the Copilot Free plan.
  2. Work in small, specific requests: describe one bug, one function or one UI change at a time.
  3. Ask the assistant to explain a proposed change before accepting it when the task is unfamiliar.
  4. Review the generated diff, run the project’s tests or checks, and keep the working code under version control.
  5. Check Copilot’s usage information regularly. When the allowance is exhausted, decide whether to wait for the reset or pay for a plan instead of treating an upgrade prompt as unavoidable.

This approach keeps your existing editor and computer in use and makes the free ceiling visible before it becomes a surprise.

Run a coding model locally with Ollama

What local inference changes

Ollama can run supported coding models on your own machine and connect them to compatible coding tools. The hosted model’s per-request bill is replaced by local hardware requirements, installation work and electricity. Local inference is therefore an optional way to avoid recurring hosted usage charges, not a guarantee that coding becomes costless.

Hardware is model- and context-dependent

Ollama’s example for glm-4.7-flash specifies about 23 GB of VRAM at a 64,000-token context. That figure describes that particular model and context configuration; it is not a minimum specification for every local coding model. A computer with less capable hardware may need a smaller model or shorter context, with corresponding trade-offs in speed and capability.

Ollama’s official guidance says coding tools work best with a full context length. In practice, check the selected model’s documented memory needs before downloading it, and treat cloud models offered through Ollama as a separate service with their own current terms and limits.

When local models make sense

  • You already own a computer with sufficient RAM or VRAM.
  • You want to experiment without a monthly hosted quota.
  • You are comfortable installing software, downloading multi-gigabyte model files and troubleshooting performance.

If you would need to purchase a dedicated GPU, local coding is no longer the cheapest starting point. Try a free hosted tier first, then evaluate whether your usage justifies hardware spending.

Cursor: convenient editor integration, but not unlimited

Cursor is an editor-based alternative. Its plans include a set amount of model usage, and Cursor says on-demand usage can continue after that amount is consumed and is billed in arrears. That creates a different risk from a hard free-tier stop: continued work may create a charge.

Before using Cursor, open its current plan and billing settings and determine:

  • how much model usage is included in the plan you selected;
  • what happens when the included amount is exhausted;
  • whether on-demand usage is enabled; and
  • how to disable or limit billable overage.

Choose Cursor for its editor workflow only if you are willing to monitor that boundary. Do not describe an included allowance as unlimited access.

Free and almost-free options compared

Path Included access Model choice What happens at the limit Main requirement
GitHub Copilot Free 2,000 inline completions per month and a limited AI-credit allowance for chat and agent features, for eligible individuals Automatic selection on the free tier An allowance limit may prompt an upgrade GitHub account eligibility and a compatible development workflow
Ollama local models Local execution of supported models; allowance depends on your hardware and model Choose among locally supported models Performance or context is constrained by hardware rather than a hosted quota Installation, storage and adequate RAM/VRAM; Ollama’s glm-4.7-flash example uses about 23 GB VRAM at 64,000 tokens
Cursor A set amount of model usage per plan Depends on the current plan and model availability On-demand use can continue and is billed in arrears Careful usage and billing controls

These are different cost models, not a definitive ranking. Compare the allowance, editor fit, model-selection rules, hardware burden and overage behavior for your own workload.

How to keep vibe coding nearly free

Use short, verifiable tasks

Ask for a narrowly defined change with acceptance criteria, then inspect the resulting diff. Smaller requests reduce wasted generations and make errors easier to catch.

Keep a recovery path

Use a version-control repository, commit before a substantial generated change and test after accepting it. If the result is wrong, revert the commit instead of spending more prompts trying to repair an unclear state.

Track the real constraint

With Copilot, the constraint is monthly completions and AI credits. With Ollama, it is memory, storage, speed and setup. With Cursor, it can become a bill when included usage ends. Check the relevant meter or system requirement before increasing the workload.

Do not buy hardware prematurely

A dedicated AI computer is optional. It may make local inference practical, but it conflicts with a genuinely free starting plan. First establish that your projects benefit from AI assistance; only then compare the cost of local hardware with a paid hosted plan.

What “free” does not guarantee

  • Unlimited prompts, completions or agent runs.
  • Freedom to select any model on a free hosted plan.
  • A fixed number of finished projects per month.
  • High performance from a local model on ordinary hardware.
  • That an editor’s overage feature will stop before charging you.

Plan names, quotas, model availability, eligibility rules and hosting terms can change. Verify the current official plan and billing pages immediately before relying on a particular allowance.
