You can make a small playable game with ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or another coding assistant without writing every line yourself. The reliable method is not a one-shot “build my game” prompt: define one tiny game loop, ask for a plan, generate a vertical slice, run it, report exact failures, and add one change at a time while keeping working checkpoints.

What vibe coding means for a game

Vibe coding is conversational software development. You describe the experience and constraints in ordinary language; the assistant proposes code, edits files, explains changes, and helps diagnose errors. For a game, that conversation still has to produce a deterministic program: input must move something, collisions must behave, an objective must be clear, and the player must be able to win, lose, and restart.

It is therefore closer to directing and reviewing a junior developer than to ordering a finished product. A June 26, 2025 empirical study concluded that vibe coding shifts effort toward context management, rapid evaluation, and deciding when to edit code manually. You remain responsible for scope, playtesting, safety, and the final files.

AI output is nondeterministic. Google’s game codelab explicitly warns that generated output is unknown in advance and should not be used in production without appropriate review. Roblox and Decentraland put human playtesting or preview in their own workflows for the same reason.

Start with a game small enough to finish

Your first project should have one repeatable loop that a player can understand in seconds. A one-screen arcade game, maze, simple platformer, puzzle, or short obstacle course (obby) is a good target. A useful first definition of done is “the player can start, perform the main action, reach a win or lose state, restart, and play again.”

Good first-project boundaries

  • One level or screen, rather than a campaign.
  • One primary action, such as moving, jumping, matching, or avoiding.
  • A small, named set of assets; placeholder shapes are acceptable initially.
  • A single-player loop before networking, inventories, shops, or accounts.
  • A short session that can be tested repeatedly in a few minutes.

Features to postpone

Delay procedural worlds, multiplayer synchronization, complex physics, leaderboards, monetization, save systems, and custom art pipelines. Each introduces state and failure modes that make it harder to tell whether the core game works. Add them only after the basic slice survives repeated playtests.

Choose the runtime and assistant before you prompt

The best assistant is determined less by the model’s marketing name than by where your game will run and how much project context the tool can inspect. Compare the available routes before creating files.

Route Best fit What it provides Trade-offs and prerequisites
Gemini with p5.js and optional Firebase Hosting Fast browser prototype Google documents browser-based development, iterative prompting, p5.js testing, and an optional Firebase deployment path. The first phase needs only a computer and browser. Generated code is nondeterministic; the codelab warns against production use without suitable review.
GitHub Copilot in VS Code or JetBrains A repository-based game where source control matters Planning, code generation, testing, debugging, iteration, and Git commits inside a conventional project. Requires an eligible Copilot plan, a supported IDE, a project environment, and enough familiarity to use Copilot Chat and review diffs.
Roblox Studio Assistant A 3D or social Roblox experience A platform-aware Plan, Build, Playtest, Refine, and Polish workflow that understands Studio objects and scripts. Requires Roblox Studio and follows Roblox’s runtime, asset, moderation, and publishing model.
Decentraland Creator Hub Assistant A browser-based 3D scene or multiplayer-oriented prototype Generates SDK7 scene code, offers preview, and can use installable SDK skills. The assistant is experimental; scene limits remain, and complex logic may require manual refinement.
Mistral Vibe Code A local or remote repository workflow CLI, VS Code extension, and web modes can read files, run commands, review, and debug subject to your approvals. You must choose an interface and configure the coding environment, permissions, and project commands.

Evaluate each option on six questions: Where will the game run (browser, Roblox, Decentraland, or a local app)? Can the assistant see the whole project or only pasted snippets? How easy is playtesting? Can you inspect a source-control diff? What is the deployment path? How much setup can you handle yourself?

Write a compact design brief

Give the assistant a stable reference before asking for implementation. Keep the brief short enough to paste into every new conversation or store as a project file.

  • Player goal: the action that counts as success.
  • Controls: keyboard keys, pointer, touch, or gamepad buttons.
  • Win condition: the exact state that ends the round successfully.
  • Lose condition: what ends a failed attempt and whether a restart is immediate.
  • Screen or level count: start with one.
  • Visual direction: for example, flat neon shapes or low-poly obstacles.
  • Runtime: browser and p5.js, Roblox Studio, Decentraland SDK7, or another specified engine.
  • Definition of done: the observable checks that must pass before adding features.

Also state assumptions the assistant might otherwise invent: canvas size or aspect ratio, target input device, whether external assets are allowed, and whether the game must run offline. Ambiguity creates incompatible code later.

Use a staged prompt, not a mega-prompt

Ask for a plan first. Roblox’s guidance specifically recommends a step-by-step breakdown that starts with the world and gameplay, adds scripts gradually, and postpones interface, scoring, and win-or-lose systems until the foundation works. A similar order works in any environment.

You are my game-development partner. Help me build a one-screen [genre] game.
Player goal: [goal]. Controls: [controls]. Win condition: [condition].
Lose condition: [condition]. Art direction: [style]. Runtime: [browser/engine].
First, propose a five-step plan and list assumptions. Then implement only step 1.
After I run it, wait for my exact error messages, screenshots, and playtest notes.
Do not add new features until the current step works.

Have the assistant name the files it will create or modify, explain how to run the project, and identify a visible success check for the step. If it proposes a library, ask why that dependency is needed and how to install it before accepting the change.

Build the first playable slice

A vertical slice is a small but complete piece of the game, not a collection of disconnected systems. It should let a player perform the main action and receive a clear result.

  1. Create the smallest project. Ask for the entry file, a run command or Studio play instructions, and placeholder geometry. Verify that a blank scene or canvas starts without console errors.
  2. Add input and movement. Implement one control scheme. Ask the assistant to explain coordinate systems, speed, frame timing, and what happens when input is released.
  3. Add collision or boundaries. Keep the first collision model simple and visible. Test edges, corners, fast movement, and restarting after a collision.
  4. Add the objective. Place one target, exit, collectible, or hazard. Make its state obvious without relying on hidden rules.
  5. Add end states. Display a win or lose message, stop or reset the relevant motion, and provide a deterministic restart action.
  6. Run a complete round. Start from a clean launch, reach both success and failure paths, reload, and repeat. Only after this works should you ask for a second feature.

Request small diffs. “Add a timer and redesign the menu” is several changes; “add a ten-second timer, display it in the upper-left, and leave all other behavior unchanged” is testable.

Playtest every change and report observations precisely

Run generated code yourself rather than trusting a plausible explanation. Google’s workflow has you test the p5.js game and paste JavaScript errors or screenshots back into Gemini. GitHub’s guidance similarly recommends opening the application in a normal browser, trying representative actions, and reporting failures for debugging.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to send in a debugging prompt

  • The exact error text, including the file and line number.
  • The action sequence that produced it, such as “press Right for two seconds, then touch the red tile.”
  • What you expected and what actually happened.
  • A screenshot or short recording when position, layering, or animation is wrong.
  • The last change made and whether a clean restart reproduces the issue.

Ask for the smallest fix, a brief explanation of the cause, and a list of files changed. Do not accept an unrelated refactor while diagnosing a collision bug; it makes the result impossible to evaluate.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

Use an evaluation loop

  1. Run the current version from a clean start.
  2. Perform one representative action and one edge case.
  3. Record the first observable failure, not a theory about its cause.
  4. Paste the evidence into the assistant.
  5. Apply only the proposed fix and repeat the same test.

When a change passes, record what was tested. A green-looking screen is not evidence that keyboard focus, restart behavior, collision boundaries, or the lose state work.

Keep reversible versions

AI can make a working project worse while appearing to improve it. Use Git commits or another checkpoint after every successful iteration. Give commits descriptive messages such as “player movement and wall collision pass” rather than “update.”

Before a broad request, create a checkpoint. If the assistant changes many files, inspect the diff and revert instead of trying to repair an uncertain mixture of edits. Ask it to show the commands it ran and the files it touched. Never approve a command that deletes or overwrites assets you have not backed up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A lightweight project record is useful: runtime version, install command, run command, controls, known limitations, and the last passing commit. This gives a new conversation enough context without pasting the entire history.

Add polish only after the loop is reliable

Once movement, objective, end states, and restart are dependable, improve presentation in separate passes.

Interface and feedback

  • Show controls and the objective before the first attempt.
  • Use clear visual or audio feedback for hits, pickups, success, and failure.
  • Keep important status information readable against the background.
  • Make pause and restart actions explicit rather than relying on a page reload.

Difficulty and accessibility

  • Ask for adjustable speed, timer, or hazard spacing instead of silently increasing difficulty.
  • Do not make color the only way to distinguish a target or danger.
  • Support a second input method when the runtime allows it, such as keyboard alternatives or touch controls.
  • Check text size, contrast, motion intensity, and whether the game remains understandable with sound muted.

Art and audio

Start with generated shapes and public-domain or properly licensed assets. Ask the assistant to keep asset paths centralized and to explain licenses before importing anything. Add sound and custom art one category at a time so a broken asset cannot obscure a gameplay regression.

Publish according to the runtime

Browser game

For a p5.js browser game, verify that the project runs from a clean directory, that asset paths work when hosted rather than opened from a local file, and that the production build has no console errors. Google’s codelab documents Firebase Hosting as an optional deployment path. Treat that as a deployment mechanism, not proof that the generated game is production-ready; review the code and test the hosted URL on a second browser or device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roblox experience

Use Studio’s playtest tools repeatedly before publishing. Confirm that objects, scripts, spawn points, permissions, and reset behavior work for a fresh player. Roblox’s own description of Assistant emphasizes that the creator still playtests, makes decisions, and uses Studio tools to customize the final experience.

Decentraland scene

Preview the SDK7 scene, test movement and interactions in the intended scene size, and check behavior with more than one player when multiplayer interaction is part of the design. The Creator Hub Assistant is experimental and scene limits remain, so expect to refine complex logic manually.

Local or repository project

Document the required runtime, dependencies, setup command, run command, and build command. Reproduce the build from a clean checkout before sharing it. If the assistant can execute commands, keep approvals enabled and inspect destructive operations.

Acceptance checklist before you call it finished

  • The game starts cleanly from the documented command or platform play button.
  • Controls respond consistently and do not depend on accidental keyboard focus.
  • The objective is understandable without reading source code.
  • A player can reach both win and lose states.
  • Restart returns the game to a known initial state.
  • No console or runtime errors appear during normal play.
  • Collision, timing, and boundary behavior have been tested at least once in an edge case.
  • Assets load from the same paths in the intended hosted or published environment.
  • The project can be reproduced from its saved files or a clean repository checkout.
  • The last known-good checkpoint is identified, and changes after it are reviewable.

Common failure modes and fixes

The assistant generates too much code

Return to the brief and ask for one step only. Require a file list, run instructions, and a testable success condition. If necessary, restore the last checkpoint and start the feature as a new, smaller request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game looks right but does not play

Ask for a behavior-first diagnosis. Test input focus, event handlers, frame updates, coordinate units, and collision bounds separately. Send the exact action sequence and a screenshot of the failing state.

Each fix breaks another feature

Stop stacking fixes. Revert to the last passing checkpoint, reproduce the original bug, and request a minimal patch. Review the diff before running it.

The assistant invents APIs or files

Ask it to inspect the actual project tree and runtime documentation available in the environment. Require it to distinguish existing files from proposed files and to state when it is uncertain instead of guessing.

Assets or deployment work locally but not online

Check case-sensitive filenames, relative paths, build output directories, and whether the host serves assets from the location the code expects. Rebuild from a clean checkout and test the hosted version, not just the development server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scope expands into a different game

Keep a written definition of done and reject changes that do not serve the current loop. Finish one small game before experimenting with a second mode, online features, or a new art direction.

What AI can and cannot replace

An assistant can draft boilerplate, explain unfamiliar APIs, propose small algorithms, generate repetitive data, and help localize an error. It cannot reliably infer the fun of a mechanic, notice every confusing rule, guarantee secure or maintainable code, or certify that a build behaves correctly on every device.

Human work is concentrated in choosing a tractable idea, supplying context, evaluating behavior quickly, deciding whether a manual edit is safer, and rejecting changes that make the game harder to understand. That division of labor is why a short plan-build-test-refine loop consistently outperforms a single request for a complete game.
