To verify a software download, first obtain it from the publisher’s official channel, then calculate the exact hash the release page specifies and compare it with the published value. When the project supplies a digital signature, verify that signature too: it ties the checksum or file to a trusted publisher key. A matching hash catches corruption and changes; a valid signature adds evidence of who released the bytes. If the hash differs, the signature is reported as bad, the signer is unknown, or a certificate is untrusted, do not install the file.

The procedures below use built-in Windows, macOS and Linux tools, plus OpenPGP verification for signed release files and an end-to-end Ubuntu ISO example.

What does a checksum prove—and what does it not prove?

A checksum (also called a hash or digest) is a fixed-length value calculated from every byte in a file. If your locally calculated value matches the publisher’s value, your copy is byte-for-byte equal to the file represented by that published digest. That detects a truncated download, transmission error or later modification, but it does not identify who supplied the expected value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check What a pass establishes What it cannot establish by itself
SHA-256 or SHA-512 digest match Your bytes match the bytes described by the published digest. That the digest was published by the real project, or that the download came from an authorized source.
Valid detached or signed checksum An accepted signing key signed the digest file or release metadata, linking integrity to a publisher or project key. That you selected the correct key unless you validated its fingerprint and provenance.
Valid Windows Authenticode signature Windows can validate the signature, certificate authority, signer and unchanged file. That an unofficial file from an untrusted channel is appropriate merely because it is signed.
Valid macOS package certificate The package’s signing certificate and SHA-256 fingerprint satisfy the platform’s verification checks. That an unsigned or unexpectedly sourced package is safe.
HTTPS download The connection was protected in transit between your client and the endpoint. That a compromised mirror or release channel did not serve a malicious file.

Apache Software Foundation guidance summarizes the key limitation: hashes can reveal corruption or changes, but “hashes do not provide any guarantees as to the authenticity of the file.” Authenticity comes from a trusted publication channel and, preferably, a signature whose key you can validate.

Which details should you capture before downloading?

Record the release details before you save the file. This prevents a correct verification command from being applied to the wrong build.

  1. Open the project’s official release or download page, not an advertisement, random mirror or repost.
  2. Write down the exact filename, version, operating system, processor architecture and package type (installer, archive, package or disk image).
  3. Note the algorithm named by the project, such as SHA-256 or SHA-512, and copy the expected digest without changing any characters.
  4. Look for a signed checksum file or detached signature such as SHA256SUMS.gpg, file.sig or file.asc.
  5. If a signing key is required, obtain its fingerprint from the project’s official documentation or another trusted channel. Do not assume that a key downloaded from the same unverified mirror proves that mirror’s identity.

Keep the release page, checksum text and key fingerprint together in your notes. A digest copied from a different version or architecture can make a perfectly good download appear to fail—or allow the wrong file to pass a superficial check.

How do you verify a SHA-256 checksum?

Use the algorithm specified by the publisher, calculate the digest locally, and compare the complete output with the trusted published value. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are the normal choices in current release guidance; Apache marks MD5 and SHA-1 as deprecated for release verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Finish the download and identify the exact file you intend to open.
  2. Run the operating system’s hash command shown below.
  3. Compare every hexadecimal character with the publisher’s value. Ignore only display whitespace such as line breaks; do not ignore changed characters.
  4. Proceed only when the filename, version, architecture and algorithm also match the release you selected.

Windows: use CertUtil

Open Command Prompt and run:

certUtil -hashfile C:pathtofile.exe SHA256

For SHA-512, replace SHA256 with SHA512. The command prints the digest and the file path. Compare the digest character-for-character with the publisher’s value; a match establishes byte-for-byte equality with that published value.

macOS: use shasum

In Terminal, run:

shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/file.pkg

The -a 256 option selects SHA-256. Use the full path if the filename contains spaces, or quote the path. The output’s first field is the digest to compare with the release page.

Linux: use sha256sum or sha512sum

Run the command matching the publisher’s algorithm:

What does a digital signature add to a checksum?

A digital signature signs a digest or release file with a private key. Your verifier uses the corresponding public key to confirm that the signed data was not changed and that an accepted key made the signature. Debian describes signed checksum files as providing both corruption detection and confirmation that images were created and released by Debian.

Release material Typical verification Decision you can make
Bare hash displayed on a page Calculate the same algorithm locally and compare. Detects changes only if the page or channel carrying the hash is trusted.
Signed checksum file Verify the signature, then use the listed digest to check the download. Confirms the digest came from the holder of the accepted project key and that the file matches it.
Detached OpenPGP signature (.sig or .asc) Run an OpenPGP verifier against the signature and the original file. Confirms the signed file’s integrity and the signing key accepted by your installation.
Platform-signed installer or package Use Windows or macOS signature and certificate interfaces. Shows whether the operating system accepts the signer, certificate chain and unchanged content.

Apple describes a digital signature as an encrypted seal over hashes, with certificate and verification requirements; its documentation states that “the digital signature guarantees the seal’s integrity.” The identity conclusion still depends on whether you trust the certificate or key and obtained it from the right source.

How do you verify an OpenPGP detached signature?

Use an already trusted OpenPGP installation to verify the signature before opening the archive or running the program. GnuPG’s documented pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
gpg --verify file.sig file
  1. Download the original file and its adjacent .sig or .asc signature from the project’s official release channel.
  2. Obtain the project’s public key using the project’s documented instructions. Compare its fingerprint with a fingerprint published through a trusted channel.
  3. Import or make that key available to your existing GnuPG installation.
  4. Run gpg --verify with the signature first and the signed file second.
  5. Read the result and the key identity. A “Good signature” message is useful only when the key fingerprint and identity are the ones you intended to trust.

GnuPG warns that a newly downloaded GnuPG binary should not be trusted to verify its own source. Use an installation you already trust, and investigate warnings about an unknown, expired, revoked or otherwise unexpected key instead of bypassing them.

How do you validate the signing key?

Compare the complete fingerprint shown by your verifier with the fingerprint in the project’s official documentation or another independent trusted channel. Names and email addresses in a key’s user ID are not enough: an attacker can create a key with a similar label. If the project documents a key rotation, confirm that the new fingerprint and transition are explicitly described before accepting it.

How do you verify an Ubuntu ISO?

Ubuntu’s documented sequence verifies the signed checksum file first, then checks the ISO against the trusted list. Do not skip the first command: an unsigned or unverified checksum list could contain an attacker’s replacement hash.

  1. Obtain the Ubuntu image-signing public key according to Ubuntu’s official instructions and save it as ubuntu.gpg (or use the filename specified by those instructions).
  2. Download the ISO, SHA256SUMS and SHA256SUMS.gpg from the same official release channel.
  3. Verify that the checksum list was signed by the expected key:
gpgv --keyring ./ubuntu.gpg ./SHA256SUMS.gpg ./SHA256SUMS
  1. Only after that signature succeeds, check the ISO itself:
sha256sum -c --ignore-missing ./SHA256SUMS

The final command should report the selected image as OK. If the signed-list check fails, stop and resolve the key, release or download problem before trusting any result from the list.

How do Windows Authenticode checks work?

For a signed Windows executable or installer, the graphical certificate viewer checks more than a hash. Windows evaluates signature validity, the trusted signer, the certificate authority and whether the file changed after signing.

  1. Right-click the .exe or installer and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  3. Select the signature and choose Details.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid, inspect the signer name and open the certificate path to review the issuing authorities.
  5. Check that the signed file is the one you intended to download. A valid signature from an unexpected publisher is still a stop condition.

If the Digital Signatures tab is absent, the file may be unsigned. A signature that is invalid, expired in a way Windows cannot accept, revoked or tied to an untrusted certificate should be investigated rather than overridden.

How do you verify a macOS package signature?

Apple’s package-verification guidance exposes the signing certificate and its SHA-256 fingerprint. Match that fingerprint and confirm the certificate is the one expected for the software; Apple says an unsigned package should not be installed.

  1. Keep the package in its downloaded form so you can verify the exact bytes before installation.
  2. Open the package’s certificate or signing information using the system assessment or package-verification interface documented for your macOS release.
  3. Inspect the certificate identity and SHA-256 fingerprint.
  4. Compare the fingerprint with the publisher’s official documentation or release instructions.
  5. Stop if no certificate icon or signature information is present, or if the certificate is invalid, unexpected or untrusted.

Do not treat a successful download over HTTPS as a substitute for this check when the publisher provides a package signature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is HTTPS alone not enough?

HTTPS protects the connection in transit, but it does not guarantee that the endpoint, mirror or release account supplied the intended bytes. Ubuntu explicitly recommends manually verifying directly downloaded installation media even when it was fetched over TLS. Release-level hashes and signatures provide a second, independent check after transport security.

Certificate validity helps establish who signed a file through a certificate chain, but it does not make an unofficial download trustworthy. Verify the source first, then verify the file or its signed release metadata.

What should you do when verification fails?

Treat every failed hash or signature as a stop condition until you can explain it. Most failures are selection or download errors, but a warning can also indicate tampering.

  • Hash differs: confirm that you ran the command against the intended path, then re-check the filename, version, architecture, package type and algorithm. A partial or interrupted download is common; obtain a fresh copy from the official project channel and calculate the digest again.
  • “BAD signature” or a failed signed checksum: do not use the file. Re-download the signature and release file, verify that they belong together, and check the signing-key fingerprint and any documented key rotation.
  • Unknown signer or untrusted key: locate the expected fingerprint in the project’s official documentation. Do not accept a key solely because its displayed name resembles the project.
  • Revoked or expired key: stop and follow the project’s documented replacement-key procedure. A new key should be confirmed through an authenticated announcement or other trusted channel.
  • Certificate error: check the system date, certificate path and signer identity, but do not disable certificate warnings just to complete installation.
  • Different output on repeated checks: ensure you are not comparing files from different directories or release variants. Hash the exact file that will be installed.

Debian and GnuPG both treat signature or file mismatches as reasons to investigate before use. Repeated failure from an official channel should be reported to the project with the release name, architecture and error text, without distributing the suspect file.

How should you compare two release options?

When a project offers several mirrors, package formats or verification methods, choose the option with the clearest, independently verifiable chain from publisher to bytes.

Factor Stronger option Why it matters
Release metadata Signed checksum file or detached signature The expected digest is authenticated, not merely copied from an unverified page.
Algorithm SHA-256 or SHA-512 Apache identifies MD5 and SHA-1 as deprecated in release guidance.
Key distribution Fingerprint published in official documentation and explained during rotations Lets you validate the key rather than trusting a label.
Operating-system support Native signature validation plus a published digest Provides independent platform and release-level checks.
File type A package, archive or image with documented verification steps Different formats expose different signature tools and failure messages.
Download source Official project channel or documented mirror Reduces the chance that the expected value and file were substituted together.

A mirror that provides only a bare hash may still be usable for corruption detection, but it gives you less evidence about authenticity than a signed checksum published by the project.

What is the complete pre-install checklist?

  • Source is the project’s official release page or a mirror it explicitly documents.
  • Filename, version, platform, architecture and package type match your intended installation.
  • Algorithm is the one named by the publisher, preferably SHA-256 or SHA-512.
  • Local digest matches the trusted published value exactly.
  • Any supplied checksum file or detached signature validates with the expected key.
  • Key fingerprint has been checked against an official or independent trusted channel.
  • Windows reports a valid expected Authenticode signer, or macOS reports the expected certificate and SHA-256 fingerprint, when platform signatures are supplied.
  • No warning remains about a bad signature, unknown signer, revoked key, untrusted certificate or missing signature.
  • You retained the release details and verification output so the result can be audited later.

How can teams automate these checks safely?

Automation is useful for repeat downloads, build servers and fleet deployment, but it should fail closed. Store the expected digest with the exact version and architecture, calculate the digest in the build or deployment job, and abort on any mismatch rather than offering an override by default.

For signed releases, keep the trusted public key or keyring under controlled change management, record its fingerprint, and alert when a project announces a key rotation. Log the filename, release, algorithm, digest result, signature result and verifier version. Do not let a pipeline download a verifier and its signing key from the same untrusted location and then use them to bless each other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For recurring updates, update the expected digest and trusted key only through a reviewed change. This preserves the distinction between an intentional release change and an unexplained byte change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a matching checksum prove who published a file?

No. It proves that your bytes match the value you compared, but it says nothing about who created that value. You need a trusted publication channel or a valid signature whose key fingerprint you have independently verified.

Do I need an internet connection to verify a download?

Not necessarily. Once you have the file, the expected digest and a trusted public key stored locally, hashing and signature verification can run offline. Internet access is needed only to obtain or update those trusted values and to investigate release changes.

What should I do if a project changes its signing key?

Pause verification and find the project’s documented key-rotation announcement or replacement-key instructions. Compare the new fingerprint through a trusted channel, update your keyring deliberately, and record why the change was accepted before retrying the download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I verify a file after I have already installed it?

You can hash an installed file, but it may no longer be identical to the distributed package because installation can add metadata, change permissions or place components in multiple locations. Verification is strongest on the original installer, archive or image before it is opened or installed.
