An LTO backup is verified only when several independent checks agree: the bytes read from tape match a protected checksum manifest, the cartridge can be read end to end, the backup catalog and application data pass their own checks, and a restore produces usable files or a working service in an isolated environment. A backup job marked “successful” is not enough. Use read-only scans and checksum comparisons for routine evidence, reserve overwrite tests for sacrificial media, and periodically rehearse a complete recovery including catalogs, encryption keys, software dependencies and application validation.

What does verification prove that a successful backup job does not?

A job-success message usually means the backup software completed its planned write operations. It does not prove that every block can be read later, that the catalog is usable, that encryption keys are available, or that a database and its applications will start after recovery. SAP documentation warns that failing to verify can leave you with a backup that cannot be used for a database restore.

Verification is best treated as four layers of evidence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Manifest or checksum comparison: confirms that returned bytes match a digest recorded when the backup was written.
  2. Readability scan: checks whether a drive can read the selected tape range without overwriting it.
  3. Application-level checks: inspect catalog metadata, file sizes or byte comparisons, and database consistency where the backup product supports those tests.
  4. Isolated test restore: proves that the backup can become usable files or a functioning service.

Each layer answers a different question. A hash match cannot prove that a catalog or database is recoverable, and a tape-read pass cannot prove application consistency. A restore rehearsal is the only layer that demonstrates an end-to-end recovery path.

What should I record before handling an LTO cartridge?

Make a record before inserting production media. This prevents an ambiguous result and helps you reproduce a failure on another drive.

  • Cartridge barcode and LTO generation.
  • Drive serial number, library slot and firmware version.
  • Backup-job ID, backup software version and catalog location.
  • Encryption mode and key identifier, without placing secret keys in the log.
  • Manifest location and its protection or immutability settings.
  • Most recent checksum, readability and restore results.

Confirm that the current drive, driver, backup application and key-management configuration are compatible with the backup. Keep a second compatible drive available for cross-drive reads. If the only drive is marginal, a failed read could be a drive problem rather than a cartridge problem.

Do not run a diagnostic that can overwrite the only copy. HPE guidance distinguishes read-only media assessments from destructive drive tests and recommends new or unimportant cartridges for tests that write test wraps.

How do I create and verify a checksum manifest?

Create the manifest during the backup, store it outside the tape set, and protect it from later alteration. During verification, read the tape contents again, recompute the same hashes and compare the results with that protected reference.

1. Generate a per-file or per-segment manifest

The manifest should identify each file or backup segment, its size, the hash algorithm and the resulting digest. Include the cartridge barcode, backup date and job ID so that a digest cannot be confused with another tape. If your backup application writes a native manifest, retain that file; otherwise generate one as part of the backup workflow.

2. Choose the algorithm for the threat you face

PostgreSQL documents CRC32C, SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 manifest options. CRC32C is faster and useful for detecting accidental changes. SHA-2 hashes, such as SHA-256, are preferable when the digest must also resist deliberate tampering. The algorithm does not make the manifest trustworthy by itself: an attacker who can replace both the data and manifest can make any comparison appear valid.

3. Protect the reference manifest

Keep at least one copy on separate storage with access controls or immutability, and consider a second site for disaster recovery. Restrict who can alter or delete it. Record the manifest’s own checksum in an independent system if your threat model includes malicious modification.

4. Recompute after reading

Read the selected files or segments from tape and calculate the same digest. Compare both the hash and expected byte count. A match supports byte identity with the recorded source; it does not establish that the backup catalog, encryption configuration, database state or restore procedure works.

5. Interpret mismatches carefully

A mismatch can result from media damage, a failing drive, a changed file-selection rule, a wrong tape generation, an incorrect decryption key or a corrupted manifest. Preserve the original logs, retry the read in another compatible drive and compare results before labeling the cartridge defective.

How do I run a read-only LTO tape readability scan?

Use your backup application’s tape-verification function or the drive/library vendor’s read-only media assessment. A read pass demonstrates that the selected tape range can be read; it does not validate application consistency or the recovery infrastructure.

Use a full-tape option when coverage matters

In HPE Library and Tape Tools, the full-tape assessment analyzes the existing backup. Leave Allow Overwrite disabled. Selecting Entire Tape reads through the end of data and provides stronger coverage than a short sample. HPE’s 2026 documentation gives an approximate duration of 20 minutes for its LTO Media Assessment, but actual time varies with cartridge length, drive speed and errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some libraries offer a quick scan that covers one wrap and a full scan that reads end to end. HPE documents both modes and can retain results in a media-health database. Use quick scans for frequent screening and full scans when you need evidence that the entire recorded range is readable.

Understand what a read pass cannot tell you

Veeam states that tape verification checks only whether data on tape can be read; it does not check application consistency or infrastructure. A pass therefore belongs beside checksum and restore evidence, not in place of it.

Handle a failed scan without making the problem worse

Do not repeatedly scrub a suspect cartridge with destructive tests. Note the failing block, wrap or file if the tool reports it, then retry in another compatible drive. If the second drive reads the cartridge, investigate the first drive’s alignment, cleaning state, firmware and error logs. If both drives fail at the same location, treat the cartridge or the written data as suspect and look for another copy.

How do I test the tape drive without risking production data?

Drive diagnostics and media diagnostics are separate from backup verification. Run them with a blank or sacrificial cartridge that can be overwritten.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drive assessment

HPE’s Drive Assessment writes and reads test wraps, then returns PASS or FAIL. It requires a cartridge suitable for overwriting; it does not validate the contents of a production backup. HPE reports a healthy-drive assessment duration of about 10–20 minutes in its 2026 documentation.

Vendor self-tests

IBM’s internal self-test likewise requires a test or blank cartridge and warns that the tape will be overwritten. IBM lists an LTO cleaning cartridge among the prerequisites. Check the drive model and LTO generation before using a cleaning cartridge; compatibility is not universal.

Cross-drive confirmation

When a real backup fails to read, repeat the read-only operation in another compatible drive if possible. A result that changes with the drive points toward drive alignment, head contamination, firmware or hardware. A failure that follows the cartridge across drives is stronger evidence of media or recording damage. If health measurements implicate either component, repeat the backup with a different drive-and-tape combination.

What application-level checks should I run?

Use the checks exposed by your backup and database software in addition to physical tape tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Catalog verification: confirm that the backup index opens, lists the expected sessions and can locate every required segment.
  • File validation: compare recorded sizes and, where supported, byte-level content or application checksums.
  • Database validation: run the database product’s block or consistency checks after recovery, not merely after the backup job reports completion.
  • Dependency checks: verify that configuration files, certificates, service accounts, scripts and key identifiers needed by the application were included or are available separately.

The exact scope depends on the product and whether the database was online or offline during backup. Record which checks were actually run; “verify” is not a universal feature with a fixed meaning.

How do I perform an isolated test restore?

Restore into a disposable host, isolated network or sandbox so that recovered services cannot overwrite production data or contact production clients. A test restore should validate both the data and the procedure used by an operator during an incident.

  1. Prepare the recovery environment. Match the operating-system family, backup software, required drivers and compatible LTO drive. Obtain the catalog and the encryption keys or key-recovery procedure before starting.
  2. Restore a representative sample. Select files that cover large and small objects, different directories, permissions, timestamps, compressed data and any application-specific formats.
  3. Recalculate checksums. Compare restored files with the protected manifest where one exists. Investigate any discrepancy rather than accepting a partially completed job.
  4. Recreate the filesystem or volumes. Mount the recovered volumes, check ownership and permissions, and confirm that expected free-space and capacity assumptions hold.
  5. Recover a critical service or database. Restore the catalog and complete backup chain, apply logs or incremental members in the documented order, and start the service using the recovered configuration.
  6. Run application checks. Open representative documents, query the recovered database, run its consistency checker and execute a small business transaction or read-only test.
  7. Measure recovery performance. Record elapsed time, operator actions, tape changes, errors and points that required undocumented knowledge. A technically successful restore that exceeds the recovery-time objective is still an operational failure.
  8. Preserve the restore log. Record cartridge and drive IDs, software and firmware versions, key identifiers, selected files, validation results and corrective actions.

PostgreSQL documentation explicitly recommends test restores even when manifest verification is used, and says to confirm that resulting databases work as expected and contain the correct data.

What is the difference between checksum checks, tape scans and test restores?

Method What it proves Main limitation Destructive risk
Manifest or hash comparison Returned bytes match a previously recorded digest Needs a trusted, protected manifest; does not prove application recoverability None when performed read-only
Tape readability scan The drive can read the selected tape range Does not prove catalog, database or infrastructure consistency None in read-only mode
Application verify or catalog check Backup metadata and, where supported, file or block consistency Scope varies by product and online/offline state Usually none
Isolated test restore The backup can become usable data or a working service Requires time and a recovery environment None to the source tape when restoring read-only
Drive assessment Drive and sacrificial-media health Does not validate production-backup contents Often overwrites test media

How often should I verify and test-restore LTO backups?

There is no authoritative industry-wide interval that fits every archive. Set frequency from recovery objectives, change rate, media age, retention period and the cost of discovering a failure during an incident.

  • Run checksum or catalog checks as part of each backup cycle when the data is business-critical and the software can perform them without excessive media wear.
  • Schedule read-only scans often enough to detect a deteriorating cartridge before its retention deadline; use full-tape scans for higher-assurance archives.
  • Restore representative files after each backup cycle or at a cadence your recovery objective can tolerate.
  • Rehearse a complete backup-chain and application recovery at longer, documented intervals, and whenever the backup software, encryption system, operating system or drive generation changes.
  • Perform an additional restore before an audit, migration or disposal of the only older copy.

Document the rationale for your interval. The right schedule is the one that leaves enough time to obtain another copy, repair a drive or rewrite a cartridge before the data becomes unrecoverable.

What should I do when verification fails?

Checksum mismatch but tape scan passes

Confirm that the same file-selection rules, decompression settings and hash algorithm were used. Check the manifest’s integrity and verify that the correct cartridge and backup version were selected. If the mismatch persists, restore the file from another copy and compare the source data.

Tape scan fails in one drive only

Repeat in a known-good compatible drive, inspect drive logs, check firmware and perform a drive assessment on sacrificial media. Do not overwrite the production cartridge while diagnosing it.

Both drives fail at the same region

Preserve the error report, identify whether another tape copy contains the same files and prioritize a rewrite to new media. Label the cartridge as suspect so it is not silently returned to the rotation.

Read and checksum checks pass, but restore or application startup fails

Investigate the catalog, missing incremental members, encryption keys, permissions, software versions, database logs and external dependencies. The bytes may be intact while the recovery chain is incomplete.

Restore succeeds but data is incomplete

Compare the recovered inventory with the backup-job scope and manifest. Check retention pruning, excluded paths, database point-in-time requirements and whether the selected tape was only one member of a larger chain.

What evidence belongs in the verification record?

Keep a single record that connects the physical cartridge to the logical recovery result. Include the barcode, LTO generation, drive and firmware, backup-job ID, manifest identifier and protection state, checksum algorithm, scan mode, application checks performed, restore scope, encryption-key identifier, timestamps, errors and corrective actions. Mark whether each test was read-only or destructive and identify any sacrificial media used.

A concise status can then distinguish byte identity verified, media readable, catalog/application checks passed and end-to-end restore passed. Do not collapse those statuses into one generic “verified” label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I checksum files directly on an LTO tape?

Yes. Read the files or backup segments from tape, calculate the same digest used when the manifest was created and compare both the digest and byte count. Tape access is sequential, so checking a large set can take substantially longer than hashing files on disk; plan the operation around the drive’s sustained read rate and expected tape changes.

Does a full-tape scan wear out an LTO cartridge?

A read-only scan does not overwrite recorded data, but every pass is a mechanical operation and may expose marginal media or drive hardware. Follow the cartridge and drive manufacturer’s handling limits, avoid unnecessary repeated scans, and use a second copy for frequent verification when retention requirements permit.

What if the encryption key is unavailable during a restore test?

Treat key recovery as a failed recovery dependency, even if the cartridge passes readability and checksum tests. Document the key-escrow location and access procedure, then repeat the restore in the isolated environment only after an authorized operator can decrypt the backup.

Should I verify an incremental or synthetic backup differently?

Verify the complete chain that would be needed in a real incident, not only the most recent tape. Restore the base, each required incremental or differential member and the catalog in the documented order, then validate the resulting application state.
