1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify a supplier’s authority and the GPU’s chain of custody before paying. Match the exact model and part number, serial or lot identifiers, condition, invoice and shipping records; confirm the warranty route with the manufacturer or board partner; and check export requirements for the actual destination and end user. Physical inspection and technical attestation can add confidence, but neither establishes that the seller was authorized or that a shipment was lawful.
What does it mean to verify an AI hardware supplier?
Supplier verification is more than checking that a company has a website or that a GPU’s serial number looks plausible. It means gathering evidence that the seller can legitimately supply the specific product, that the item and its records correspond, and that the transaction can be supported in the destination where it will be used.
A GPU can be genuine yet have an uncertain or unauthorized supply history. Conversely, a paperwork discrepancy is a reason to pause and investigate, not by itself proof of counterfeiting or diversion. Keep those questions distinct: authenticity concerns what the product is; supplier authority and traceability concern how it reached you; export compliance concerns whether the particular transaction is permitted.
What procurement rules can—and cannot—tell you
For covered U.S. Department of Defense procurements, DFARS 246.870-1 defines an authorized supplier as a supplier, distributor or aftermarket manufacturer with a contractual arrangement with, or express written authority from, the original manufacturer or current design activity to buy, stock, repackage, sell or distribute the part. The rule’s source hierarchy prioritizes the original manufacturer, authorized suppliers, or suppliers that source exclusively from them. This is a useful procurement model, not a universal legal requirement for every private purchase.

NASA’s acquisition rules also treat counterfeit or suspect counterfeit parts broadly: the concern can include unauthorized reproduction, substitution or alteration, used parts represented as new, and false grade, serial number, lot number, date code or performance claims. A matching serial number alone therefore cannot settle the question.
How do I verify a supplier before ordering?
-
Specify the exact item and transaction
Record the GPU or server configuration, manufacturer part number, board partner, quantity, new or used condition, and destination. Ask the seller who made the product, who will handle warranty claims, and whether the seller is directly authorized or can document an exclusive supply chain from an authorized source.
-
Request evidence of authority and sourcing
Ask for written authorization or a traceable invoice chain appropriate to the transaction. A seller’s marketing claim that it is “authorized” is not equivalent to documentary evidence. For a high-value purchase, identify the named source and confirm the relationship with the manufacturer or board partner where possible.

Get item-specific identifiers and condition details
Request recent photographs of the actual card, labels, packaging and seals, along with serial or lot identifiers and a written condition statement. Compare the identifiers on the product and packaging with the quotation, invoice and any shipping records. Pause if records do not reconcile and ask the seller to explain the difference in writing.

Confirm the warranty path for this product and region
NVIDIA says warranty terms depend on product line and region, and that most NVIDIA product support begins with the local distributor or reseller. GeForce add-in-board partner cards are generally supported by the board partner, while Founders Edition cards are covered directly by NVIDIA. Confirm the terms for the exact model, purchase channel and geography rather than assuming that a recognizable brand name guarantees transferable coverage.
-
Screen cross-border or controlled transactions
Check the manufacturer part number in NVIDIA’s export classification lookup, then confirm the current requirements for the actual destination, end user and transaction. NVIDIA describes the lookup as informational and subject to change; it is not a warranty that a classification is correct or a determination that a shipment is legal. Refer uncertain or consequential decisions to qualified export-control counsel or the relevant authorities.

How can I tell if a GPU is genuine?
Use multiple checks and preserve the evidence. Before installation or modification, photograph the packaging, seals, labels and card; record serial and lot numbers; and retain invoices and shipping documents. Compare the board markings and identifiers with the manufacturer’s documentation and the seller’s records. Investigate conflicting model or country-of-origin labels, signs of relabeling or disturbed seals, implausible dates, and unexplained differences between invoice and shipping paperwork.
These are screening indicators, not standalone verdicts. A clean-looking card cannot prove its source or history, and a suspicious label does not by itself prove that the GPU is counterfeit. For a critical or high-value deployment, use qualified inspection and electrical testing, keep the results with the item’s traceability records, and establish a process to quarantine and report suspect parts. DoD and NASA procurement controls include inspection, testing, traceability and suspect-part handling as elements of broader counterfeit-avoidance systems.
What each check can establish
| Check | Useful evidence about | Does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Authorization letter or documented supply chain | The seller’s authority or documented sourcing path for the item | That the delivered unit matches the records or is free of alteration |
| Identifiers across card, packaging and transaction records | Whether the physical item and paperwork appear consistent | That a serial is genuine, or that the product has an authorized history |
| Inspection and electrical testing | Physical condition and tested performance or electrical behavior | Who supplied the GPU or whether the shipment was authorized |
| Warranty confirmation | Whether a support route may be available for the product, channel and region | Complete authenticity or export compliance |
| NVIDIA Attestation, where supported | Cryptographic claims about supported hardware and software in a deployed system | The seller’s authority, chain of custody or export status |
NVIDIA defines attestation as “the process of cryptographically verifying claims about hardware and software to establish trust between parties.” Its Attestation Suite can verify certain supported hardware and software claims, including GPU authenticity and authentic firmware for secure-computing use. Support depends on the hardware and deployment scenario, so consult NVIDIA’s current documentation before relying on it. Attestation is a runtime integrity check, not a substitute for supplier documents or shipping records.

How can I check whether a shipment may be diverted or export controlled?
Review the transaction as a whole rather than relying on a model name or one document. Compare the product labels and stated origin with the invoice, bill of lading, named parties, destination and end user. Follow up on incomplete or inconsistent records, unexplained changes in product descriptions, or a seller’s inability to identify its source. These discrepancies warrant investigation; none alone proves diversion.
A 2025 U.S. Department of Justice affidavit describes allegations involving GPU shipments with false product descriptions and labels, including labels that allegedly misstated product origin and introduced fictitious model information. The affidavit says agents recovered more than $30 million worth of export-controlled GPUs and other items from a New Jersey warehouse. This is an investigative account of allegations in a specific case, not a prevalence statistic or final court determination.
Export classifications and restrictions can change. A static lookup or a classification for a similar model cannot settle the requirements for a different item, destination, end user or transaction. If the transaction raises a material compliance question, do not treat the seller’s assurance or a database result as legal clearance.

How should I compare suppliers?
Compare suppliers on documented evidence rather than price or a claim that serial numbers “check out.” Ask each candidate the same questions and assess the answers against the item and transaction you intend to buy.
- Authority and chain of custody: Is there written authorization or a traceable, documented sourcing path?
- Item and condition: Can the supplier reconcile identifiers and state clearly whether the product is new, used or otherwise conditioned?
- Warranty: Who handles claims, and does the stated coverage apply to this model, region and purchase channel?
- Inspection and traceability: Will the seller provide item-specific records and cooperate with inspection, testing or quarantine procedures?
- Transaction fit: Can the supplier support review of classification, destination, end user and shipping records?
For buyers who need stronger assurance, an authorized distributor or manufacturer-direct channel may make authorization and warranty checks easier to document. Whatever the channel, preserve the evidence tied to the specific lot or units rather than relying on a general supplier profile.
