That only starts the encoder: YouTube must also receive its feed, and a scheduled stream may still require you to click Go live in Live Control Room. Configure both sides and test the full workflow before relying on it unattended.
How the VPS-to-YouTube workflow works
Task Scheduler starts a local program or script on the Windows VPS. The encoder then sends audio and video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key configured in that encoder. A task showing that it ran successfully does not, by itself, mean the YouTube event is publicly live.
This applies to Windows VPS instances where you can install and run an encoder. The VPS provider, Windows image, network capacity, firewall rules, and service limits vary; confirm those details with your provider rather than assuming a particular setup.
Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one using Manage. Set the title, privacy, and event options you need. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Configure your encoder on the VPS. Install the encoder you intend to run and set its stream destination to YouTube’s displayed server URL and stream key. Use the encoder’s documentation for its exact fields; labels vary by software.
- Verify the source will be available. Check that the recording, playlist, or other intended input is present and accessible on the VPS when the task runs. A file on your administrator computer is not automatically available on the VPS.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, or log. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Choose the right Task Scheduler trigger and account

Choose the run-as identity deliberately. A task running as SYSTEM runs in the background without interactive desktop access; users cannot see or interact with programs it starts. If the encoder needs a visible desktop, logged-in profile, or interactive session, use an appropriate user context and test the behavior after logoff and reboot. Grant only the permissions the encoder needs.
Create and test the scheduled task
- Open Task Scheduler on the VPS and choose Create Task so you can set the trigger, action, and run-as identity explicitly.
- On General, give the task a recognizable name and select the user account that matches the encoder’s needs. Do not choose
SYSTEMfor an encoder that requires interactive desktop access. - On Triggers, choose New. Select a date/time-based trigger for a broadcast schedule, At startup for a reboot-triggered launch, or At log on for a user-session launch. Set any repeat or delay options only if your workflow requires them.
- On Actions, choose New → Start a program. Enter the full path to the encoder executable on the VPS. If you launch a batch file or script instead, enter its full path and provide any required arguments in the appropriate field. Microsoft notes that a task starts one program; a wrapper script can start multiple programs.
- Review the conditions and settings so power, idle, or other restrictions will not prevent the task from running as intended. The relevant options depend on the Windows image and your operating requirements.
- Save the task, then select it and choose Run to test the saved action. Check Task Scheduler’s Last Run Result and history, and verify that the encoder process actually started. Microsoft also documents
schtasks /runto start a task immediately using its saved program location and account; see schtasks /run.
When creating a task remotely, the program and script paths refer to files on the remote computer. Make sure the encoder and any wrapper files exist on the VPS, not just on the computer used to administer it.

Confirm YouTube actually goes live
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented flow is to wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and click Go live. Separately, YouTube has auto-start and auto-stop stream settings that can let the encoder start or stop the stream. Check the settings for the specific stream and account, then test them: do not assume that launching an encoder automatically makes every scheduled event public. - Set up the encoder at least two hours before the broadcast, as YouTube recommends.
- Start it at least 15 minutes before the event so you have time to confirm the incoming feed.
- In Live Control Room, check that the preview appears and verify the picture, audio, and stream health. Test with representative motion and sound, not just a static screen.
- Follow the behavior configured for that stream: click Go live if required, or confirm in a test that auto-start works as intended.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube advises choosing quality that the available connection can reliably sustain and recommends RTMPS where supported. See YouTube’s encoder tips and YouTube’s guidance on bitrate and stream quality.
Task Scheduler can also be set to run on startup, but that is not a substitute for monitoring the feed or confirming YouTube’s public-live state.

Plan how the stream ends
Decide whether an operator, the encoder, or a separate scheduled task will stop the feed. YouTube’s scheduled-stream guidance says to stop sending content and click End Stream when ending the event. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours after the encoder stops sending content; do not assume that behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Task Scheduler only automates a Windows launch; it does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in the stream. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies. A technically successful encoder task does not guarantee that YouTube will permit or keep the stream public.
