You can check a flight from an iPhone without installing a flight-tracking app. Send or receive a text containing the airline and flight number—such as United UA 2502—then tap the recognized flight and choose Preview Flight.
The built-in Messages preview can show the route, scheduled or estimated times, status, and sometimes live position, terminal, gate, or baggage-claim information. It is useful for a quick status check, but it is not a replacement for the airline’s app or website when you need to check in, change a booking, or confirm a time-sensitive gate or cancellation.
How to open the hidden flight tracker in Messages
- Open Messages on your iPhone.
- Open an existing conversation or start a new one. You can receive the flight number from someone else or send it to yourself.
- Type the airline name or airline code followed by the flight number. For example:
United UA 2502UA 2502Air France AF 23EasyJet U2502
- Send the message, then look for the flight information to become underlined or otherwise tappable.
- Tap the recognized flight. If a normal tap does not open the option, press and hold the flight information.
- Select Preview Flight.
Including the full airline name is usually the clearest way to write the flight. An airline code and number may also be recognized, but recognition is not guaranteed for every airline or route.

If iPhone identifies the text, tap the underlined flight information and choose Preview Flight. The resulting card may display the route, scheduled or estimated departure and arrival times, current status, and available airport details.

What the flight preview can show
The information depends on the flight and the data available for its airline, airports, region, and current operating status. A preview can show:
- Origin and destination
- A route map
- Scheduled departure and arrival times
- Estimated or updated departure and arrival times
- Status such as scheduled, delayed, departed, or arrived
- The aircraft’s position, when live position data is available
- Terminal and gate information, when supplied
- Baggage-claim information, when supplied
- Links to the airline or Apple Maps
Not every preview contains every field. A map or live aircraft position may be unavailable, and gate or baggage information can be missing even when the flight itself is recognized.
What this iPhone feature does not do
The Messages flight preview is an informational shortcut built into Apple’s text data detection. It recognizes flight-number formats in text and opens a flight-information card; it is not a separate radar system operated by Messages.
It generally does not let you:
- Check in for a flight
- Change or cancel a reservation
- Select or change a seat
- Manage a booking
- Resolve baggage problems
- Guarantee push alerts for every operational change
For those tasks, use the airline’s official app or website. For a departure that is imminent, also verify the result against the airline’s current information, airport displays, or airport staff. The Messages preview is convenient, but its detail and freshness can vary.

If “Preview Flight” does not appear
1. Include the airline name and code
A message containing only 2502 may be treated as an ordinary number. Try a clearer format:
United UA 2502
You can also try the airline code with the number, such as UA 2502. Including the full airline name helps iPhone determine which flight you mean, especially when a number could be ambiguous.
2. Keep the flight number easy to identify
Use ordinary text with the airline identifier and flight number close together. While a full itinerary may sometimes be recognized, troubleshooting is easier if you first send a clean message containing only the airline and flight number. Avoid placing booking references, unrelated numbers, or a long block of itinerary text immediately beside it.

A preview may not be available if the number is mistyped, outdated, duplicated across routes, not yet present in the available flight data, or unavailable from the service supplying the result. A correctly formatted flight number can still produce no result.

4. Try iPhone Search
From the Home Screen, swipe down from the middle of the screen and enter the airline and flight number. Search can sometimes surface a similar flight-information card even when the Messages link is not obvious.
5. Confirm the result through the airline
If the flight is delayed, boarding, cancelled, or close to departure, do not rely on the preview alone. Check the airline’s app or website, airport displays, or staff for the operational answer. This is particularly important for gate changes, boarding deadlines, cancellations, rebooking, and baggage collection.
Why the tracker may work for one flight but not another
iPhone’s detector first has to recognize the text as an airline flight number. The flight-information result then depends on data being available for that specific flight. Recognition and flight-detail availability are separate steps.
That explains why:
- A full airline name can work when a number alone does not.
- One airline or route may show more fields than another.
- A flight can be recognized without showing a live aircraft position.
- Gate, terminal, or baggage data may appear later or remain absent.
- An old, cancelled, ambiguous, or newly scheduled flight may return no information.
- The result may differ by airline, airport, region, and the freshness of the underlying data.
There is no reliable format that guarantees a preview for every airline and flight. The safest approach is to use the clearest airline-plus-number format and treat the result as a quick reference rather than an authoritative operational notice.

Messages flight previews versus Wallet and airline tracking
Do not confuse the Messages preview with other iPhone travel features.
Messages: You begin with recognized flight text in a conversation and open a preview card. This is the quickest option for looking up a flight someone sent you or for checking a number yourself.
Apple Wallet: Newer iOS versions, including iOS 26, support enhanced boarding-pass experiences when the airline supports them. Depending on the airline and pass, Wallet can provide more travel-related tracking and Live Activity features. Airline participation is required, so this is not universal and it is a separate workflow from Messages.
The airline’s app: This remains the appropriate source for check-in, boarding-pass access, reservation management, airline-specific alerts, rebooking, and other account actions.

A dedicated flight-tracking service may also be preferable if you need saved trips, richer historical or live tracking, or broader alert controls. You do not need one merely to use the Messages feature.
