Steam Cloud saves synchronize only the files a particular game is configured to use; they are not a universal backup of every RPG save on your computer. To protect your progress, check the game’s Cloud support, enable synchronization, confirm which copy is current before resolving a conflict, and keep a separate copy of the game’s actual save folder before replacing or restoring files.

What does Steam Cloud save, and what does it not guarantee?

Steam Cloud stores and synchronizes files for games that support it. Developers choose whether a game uses Cloud and which files are included, so Steam Cloud does not automatically protect every save file just because you own or launch a game through Steam.

That distinction matters for RPGs: a game may save locally in a folder that Steam does not sync, or Cloud may cover only selected files. Steam’s Store-page Cloud indicator is a useful first check, but it does not explain exactly which files are included. Consult the game’s own support instructions when you need to confirm coverage or locate a save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud synchronization is convenient when you switch between supported devices, but it is not the same as keeping an independent backup. A sync can propagate the wrong version, and a conflict requires you to choose which copy to keep. For important progress, maintain a separate copy of the actual game save folder.

What Steam Cloud can and cannot do

  • It can synchronize the files a developer has configured for a supported title.
  • It can make supported progress available on another computer after Steam finishes syncing.
  • It may support Windows, macOS, or Linux combinations when the individual game implements those combinations.
  • It cannot guarantee that every save slot, configuration file, screenshot, or mod-related file is covered.
  • It cannot restore a file that was never uploaded, was overwritten by a different version, or was deleted before a usable copy existed.

Steam Support describes the arrangement plainly: developers can customize how Cloud is used, including which user files are uploaded. Treat the Cloud logo as an invitation to check the title’s details, not as proof that every local save is protected.

How do I check support and turn on Steam Cloud?

Check the game first, then confirm synchronization is enabled in Steam. You can enable Cloud globally in Steam Settings or adjust it for an individual game from its Library properties.

Check whether the game supports Cloud

  1. Open the game’s Steam Store page and look for the Steam Cloud logo or feature indicator.
  2. Check the game developer’s support documentation for details about which files synchronize and whether synchronization works across the operating systems you use.
  3. Look for title-specific warnings about mods, multiple profiles, launchers, or save locations. Those instructions determine what you should copy or restore.

The Store indicator is a starting point, not a guarantee that every save-related file is covered. Steam’s system supports cross-platform synchronization, but a particular game has to implement it; verify support for that title and the specific platforms involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable Cloud for Steam or one game

  1. To check the global setting, open the Steam client and go to Steam > Settings > Cloud. Turn on the Cloud synchronization option if it is off.
  2. To check one title, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, and open General. Check that Cloud Synchronization is enabled.
  3. After changing a setting, allow Steam to finish any pending synchronization before starting the game. A status indicator or warning in the Library can show that files still need attention.

Steam’s global and per-game settings serve different purposes: a per-game setting lets you control one title without changing the setting for the rest of your library. If Cloud is disabled for a game, progress remains local on the machine where you made it; do not expect that progress to appear on another computer through Steam Cloud.

Disabling Cloud does not erase the local save by itself. It simply means Steam will not synchronize that title while the setting is disabled. If you use a game-specific recovery procedure that asks you to turn Cloud off, keep the local files intact and follow the procedure until you have verified the restored progress.

Where are Steam Cloud files stored on my computer?

Steam’s default local Cloud directories depend on the operating system. These folders hold Steam Cloud data organized by account and game appID; they are not a universal path to every game’s active save folder.

Operating system Default local Steam Cloud directory
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata

Inside userdata, account folders contain game folders identified by appID. Steam’s example is Dota 2, appID 570. An appID folder can help identify a Cloud copy, but it does not prove that the folder is the game’s active save location or that every save is synced there.

A single Steam account can therefore contain several numeric account directories, and each account directory can contain many numeric game directories. Do not infer a game’s save format from the number alone. Confirm the appID using the game’s Store page or developer documentation, then verify that the files in that directory correspond to the title and profile you intend to protect.

Some games write saves under Documents, an application-support directory, a publisher-specific folder, or another location outside userdata. A game can also keep local working files alongside a smaller set of files that Steam uploads. That is why searching only the Steam directory can produce an incomplete backup.

Do not move, delete, or restore files based only on a folder name or a search result. First identify the title’s actual save location through the developer’s instructions. Games can use different locations and procedures, and a Cloud folder may contain only the files Steam synchronizes.

How do I make a separate backup of an RPG save?

Copy the game’s actual save folder to a different location before you move, replace, or restore files. The exact folder and backup procedure are game-specific, so use the developer’s instructions rather than assuming every RPG saves in the same place.

  1. Identify the right folder. Find the save-location instructions for the specific game and check whether they distinguish Cloud-enabled from local-only saves. Note whether the game stores several profiles or slots in the same directory.
  2. Close the game cleanly. Finish any in-game save operation and exit before copying files. This avoids taking a copy while a file is being written.
  3. Preserve the current files first. Copy the entire relevant save folder, including its existing files and any backup archives the game provides, to a separate location.
  4. Keep the copy separate from the working save. A different folder or an external drive can preserve a copy independently of the game’s active files. The sources do not establish a required drive capacity or model.
  5. Label the copy clearly. Record the game, profile, device, and approximate play state so you can distinguish it from a later copy when comparing versions.
  6. Restore cautiously. Before copying a backup over active saves, preserve those active files too. Follow the title’s specific restore sequence, then check in-game that the expected progress loads before making further changes.

A manual copy is useful even when Cloud is enabled. It gives you a version that is not immediately replaced when Steam resolves a conflict, and it gives you something to inspect if a failed upload leaves a newer save only on an older computer.

Do not assume that copying only one file is enough. A title may use several files for a profile, campaign, or metadata. If the developer identifies a folder as the save location, copy the folder and its contents unless the instructions explicitly name a smaller set.

Official examples of game-specific procedures

Two official game-specific examples show why a universal path or restore recipe would be unsafe. Klei’s Don’t Starve guidance describes a Cloud-enabled location at Steamuserdata[Steam ID]219740remote and a Documents location when its workaround disables Cloud. The location changes with the Cloud configuration, so copying the wrong directory can miss the files you need.

Dead Cells’ official Steam community instructions describe disabling Cloud during restoration, using the local save folder and its dated backup archives, checking the recovered files in-game, and only then considering re-enabling Cloud. These directions apply to that game; they should not be copied as procedures for another title. The example also illustrates why existing dated archives should be preserved rather than deleted during a recovery attempt.

How should I resolve a Steam Cloud conflict?

A Cloud conflict means the local files and the remote Cloud files differ. Compare their timestamps with what you did in the game on each device, then choose the version that contains the progress you want to keep.

  1. Pause before choosing. Do not treat either copy as automatically newer or better. A timestamp is useful evidence, but connect it to where and when you played.
  2. Compare the devices and play history. Ask which computer contains the latest session you care about and whether you played offline or continued on another device afterward.
  3. Check the account and game. Make sure the conflict belongs to the intended Steam account and title, especially on a shared computer with multiple account folders.
  4. Preserve files before manual intervention. If you can identify the relevant save folder, make a separate copy before replacing files or experimenting with a restore.
  5. Select the version that matches your intended progress. Keeping one version can overwrite the other, so do not confirm a choice until you understand which progress it represents.
  6. Wait for synchronization to finish before launching when possible. Steam advises addressing a sync failure before starting the game, because launching while the copies remain out of sync can create another conflict or risk losing progress.

For example, if you completed a quest on a desktop and then launched an older laptop copy, the laptop’s local timestamp may be later even though its game state is older. Conversely, an offline session on the laptop may contain the genuinely newest progress even if the Cloud timestamp predates it. Compare the actual in-game events, not timestamps in isolation.

Offline Mode delays synchronization until the device is online again. When that device reconnects, Steam may find that its local files differ from the Cloud copy. An offline conflict is therefore expected behavior when two sessions progressed independently; it is not proof that one copy is necessarily correct.

What if Steam reports a sync failure?

Do not launch the game repeatedly while Steam reports a synchronization failure. Steam Support encourages users to address the underlying cause before launching. First note which device contains the desired progress, preserve the save folder if possible, and then retry synchronization while online. If the error persists, use the game developer’s support instructions rather than deleting files at random.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you must continue offline, remember that any progress made there will remain local until Steam can synchronize. Make a manual copy before reconnecting or choosing a conflict option so that you retain a reference to the offline state.

What should I do if my saves are missing on a new computer?

First establish whether the game supports Cloud saves and whether the old computer still has the progress you want. A failed upload or an older version being uploaded can explain why the new computer does not show the expected save.

  • On the old computer, check whether the desired save still exists in the game’s actual save location.
  • Confirm the game’s Cloud support and the client’s global and per-game synchronization settings.
  • Check whether the old computer was offline when the final session ended. A local save made offline may never have reached Cloud.
  • If the old computer has the save, connect it to Steam and attempt synchronization there before continuing on the new computer.
  • After synchronization, wait for the new computer to finish receiving files before launching the game.
  • If the game does not use Steam Cloud for saves, follow the developer’s transfer instructions rather than relying on Steam’s Cloud folders.

If the old machine is available, do not overwrite its save while troubleshooting. Copy the entire save folder first, then use the developer’s transfer method or Steam’s synchronization flow. This preserves a fallback if the first attempt selects the wrong version.

Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves. That makes a separate copy especially important before you overwrite files or assume that a Cloud sync contains the version you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Steam Cloud work across Windows, macOS, and Linux?

Steam’s synchronization system supports cross-platform use, but each game must implement it. Check the specific game’s documentation for the operating systems you plan to use rather than assuming Cloud support means every platform combination works.

Even when a title advertises cross-platform Cloud, differences in game versions, profile formats, or platform-specific save locations can matter. Confirm that the same account is signed in, that the game is updated consistently, and that the developer lists the operating-system combination you intend to use. Keep a manual copy before the first transfer between platforms, because Cloud coverage and compatibility are title-specific.

How do Steam Cloud and a manual backup differ?

Steam Cloud is the convenient synchronization layer for supported files; a manual backup is a separately retained copy that you control. They address different risks, so compare the game’s coverage, sync status, and whether a copy remains independent of the active save.

Consideration Steam Cloud Separate manual copy
Game coverage Only games and files configured by the developer are covered. Can preserve the actual save folder you choose, once you identify it correctly.
Keeping devices in sync Automatically synchronizes supported files through Steam when available. Requires you to create and refresh the copy yourself.
Independence from the active save Cloud data can differ from local data and may be overwritten when resolving a conflict. A copy stored separately can remain available if active files are changed or replaced.
Cross-platform use Possible only when the title implements the needed platform support. Requires a compatible file format and the developer’s transfer instructions.
Main risk to manage Choosing the wrong version in a conflict or launching before a sync problem is resolved. Copying the wrong folder, or restoring over files without preserving them first.

The practical choice is not Cloud versus backup. Use Cloud where the game supports it, and keep a separate copy for progress you do not want to risk losing to a sync mismatch or an accidental overwrite.

What does Steam Cloud’s developer documentation mean for players?

Steamworks describes two implementation approaches: the Cloud API, which gives developers more control, and Auto-Cloud, which synchronizes configured file groups without requiring game code changes. These are developer-side methods, not settings a player needs to configure to enable a game’s Cloud saves.

Steamworks also documents a 100 MB maximum for a single ISteamRemoteStorage::FileWrite or FileWriteStreamWriteChunk call, and says files above 256 MB may lead to a non-optimal storage endpoint and slower transfer performance. These are implementation thresholds for developers, not consumer backup limits or a measure of how much RPG progress a player can save. They do not tell you whether a particular game supports Cloud or where its saves are stored.

What are the safest habits for protecting RPG progress?

  • Check Cloud support for each game rather than assuming Steam synchronizes every title.
  • Verify the global and per-game settings before relying on synchronization between computers.
  • Use the developer’s save-location and transfer instructions to find the actual game files.
  • Close the game before copying saves, and make a separate copy before any restore, overwrite, or conflict decision.
  • Preserve existing backup archives instead of deleting them during recovery.
  • Resolve reported sync failures before launching the game when possible.
  • When a conflict appears, use timestamps alongside your play history instead of choosing on timestamp alone.
  • Keep the old computer’s files intact until the desired progress is visible and verified on the new computer.
  • After a restore, load the save in-game and confirm the expected character, quest, or campaign state before making more changes.

A quick checklist before you replace any save

  1. Confirm that the title supports Steam Cloud and identify which files it covers.
  2. Check Steam’s global and per-game Cloud settings.
  3. Determine whether either device was offline and note the last session played on each.
  4. Locate the game’s actual save folder using the developer’s instructions.
  5. Copy that folder and any included backup archives to a separate location.
  6. Compare timestamps and gameplay context if Steam presents a conflict.
  7. Choose one version only after preserving the alternatives.
  8. Wait for synchronization to complete, then launch and verify the result in-game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Steam Support restore an RPG save that I lost?

Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves. If a previous computer still contains the desired files, the game developer’s transfer instructions may help you move them; otherwise, a separate backup is the reliable safeguard.

Will Steam Cloud keep my saves synchronized between Windows, macOS, and Linux?

Steam’s synchronization system supports cross-platform use, but each game must implement it. Check the specific game’s documentation for the operating systems you plan to use rather than assuming Cloud support means every platform combination works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did Steam show a Cloud conflict after I played offline?

Offline Mode delays synchronization until the device reconnects, so the local files may differ from what Steam has in the Cloud. The conflict is a request to choose between differing copies, not proof that one is necessarily the correct or newest save.

Is the userdata folder always where my RPG saves are?

No. Steam’s userdata paths contain local Cloud data organized by account and appID, but a game may keep its active saves elsewhere or sync only selected files. Use the title’s developer documentation to find the complete save folder.

What should I do before selecting a conflict option?

Compare the local and Cloud timestamps with your play history, identify which device contains the progress you want, and copy the relevant save folder before choosing. Selecting one version can overwrite the other.

Does turning off Steam Cloud delete my local progress?

Disabling Cloud for a game leaves progress stored locally on the machine where it was made. It stops synchronization for that title, so preserve the local folder and follow the game’s instructions if you are disabling Cloud for a restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use an external drive for RPG save backups?

Yes. An external drive is an optional separate location for a copied save folder. No particular capacity or model is required by Steam’s guidance; the important point is keeping the copy independent of the active files.

Why are my saves missing on a new PC even though the game has a Cloud logo?

The desired file may not be among the files the developer configured for Cloud, an upload may have failed, or an older version may have been uploaded. Check the old computer, verify both Cloud settings, and use the developer’s transfer instructions if the title does not sync the needed save.

The Bottom Line

Steam Cloud is a per-game synchronization service, not a complete RPG backup. Verify support and settings, locate the title’s real save folder, preserve a separate copy before changing anything, and resolve conflicts by combining timestamps with your actual play history.
