To debug browser-side TypeScript or JavaScript with Puppeteer, generate source maps in your build, launch the page with DevTools enabled, and let Chrome DevTools load the map. Puppeteer does not have a source-map switch: it launches and controls the browser, while your compiler or bundler creates the map and DevTools uses it to show authored files instead of generated JavaScript.

First, identify which code you need to debug

A Puppeteer project runs code in two places: the Node.js process running your automation script, and the browser page being automated. Source maps for page code do not automatically map Node.js stack traces. The breakpoint location and mapping setup depend on which side is failing.

Target Where it runs Where to debug Mapping mechanism
Application or page code In the browser Chrome DevTools, Sources panel A client-side source map referenced by the generated JavaScript
Puppeteer automation script In Node.js Node inspector, such as Chrome’s chrome://inspect/#devices Node-side source-map support may be needed for mapped stack traces

Puppeteer’s debugging guide makes the same distinction between “server code” running on Node.js and “client code” running in the browser. A debugger statement in page.evaluate() pauses browser code; one in the automation script pauses Node code.

Prepare a usable browser source map

Configure the compiler, bundler, or minifier that builds the page to emit source maps. For TypeScript, enable its source-map output; bundlers and minifiers have their own settings. There is no single setting that applies to every build system. Chrome DevTools documentation lists TypeScript, Babel, Terser, Webpack, Vite, esbuild, and Parcel among tools that can produce source maps.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Keep the generated JavaScript and its map paired.
  • Make sure the generated file’s sourceMappingURL reference points to a map that the browser or DevTools can retrieve.
  • Use a local debugging build if production maps are intentionally withheld. Publishing source maps is a deployment decision; it is not required for every production site.

The browser still executes the generated file. When DevTools successfully loads the map, it translates debugging locations so you can inspect and set breakpoints in the authored source.

Debug browser-side code with Puppeteer and DevTools

  1. Start the page with DevTools enabled and navigate to the application.
  2. Put a debugger statement inside code that runs in the page context, such as a callback passed to page.evaluate().
  3. In DevTools, enable JavaScript source maps under Settings > Preferences > Sources.
  4. Open the authored file in Sources, then set a breakpoint there. DevTools maps it to the generated code when the map is valid and loaded.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ devtools: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
  await page.evaluate(() => {
    debugger;
    // Replace this with browser-side code you need to inspect.
    document.title;
  });
})();

Run this script in your project’s normal Node.js environment, with Puppeteer installed and the application available at http://localhost:3000. When the page-side statement executes, DevTools should pause in the browser context. Replace the URL and callback body with your app and the code path you want to inspect.

To see browser console messages in the terminal running Puppeteer, forward them explicitly:

Check whether DevTools loaded the map

Open More tools > Developer Resources and inspect the source map’s Status and Error columns. This panel shows whether a map loaded and, when it did not, can reveal the reported failure. Chrome’s documentation says DevTools normally attempts to load maps when opened.

  1. Resolve a missing file, invalid URL, or inaccessible map in the build output first.
  2. If Developer Resources reports a cross-origin request problem, try Load through website.
  3. If automatic loading still fails, generate and host the map locally. In Sources, open the processed file, right-click it, choose Add source map, enter the map URL, and confirm the authored file appears in the file tree.

Chrome’s Developer Resources documentation was last updated on 2023-04-26, so a later Chrome release may change exact menu labels. If a label differs, look for the corresponding Developer Resources or source-map controls in your current DevTools version.

Debug the Node.js Puppeteer script separately

For automation code—not code running inside the page—use Node’s inspector. Puppeteer’s documented Chrome/Chromium workflow is:

  1. Set headless: false in the launch options.
  2. Put debugger at the Node-side line you want to inspect.
  3. Start the script with node --inspect-brk path/to/script.js.
  4. Open chrome://inspect/#devices in Chrome or Chromium, select the Node target’s inspect link, then press F8 to resume execution.

The guide identifies itself as Puppeteer 25.12.0. If your installed version differs, check its current debugging documentation for any workflow or compatibility changes.

If a TypeScript program transpiled for Node produces stack traces that name generated JavaScript, that is separate from Chrome DevTools mapping page code. The source-map-support documentation describes installing its handler or preloading source-map-support/register. Verify that approach against your Node.js version, build setup, and package version; Puppeteer’s guide does not require or prescribe that package.

Troubleshoot breakpoints, maps, and stalled calls

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Sources shows only a bundle Maps are disabled, absent, misreferenced, invalid, or inaccessible. Check DevTools source-map settings, the generated map file, the sourceMappingURL, and Developer Resources’ Status and Error columns.
The map request reports a cross-origin problem DevTools could not retrieve the map using its normal request path. Try Load through website; if needed, add a locally hosted map to the processed file manually.
A browser breakpoint does not pause The relevant page code may not have run, or the breakpoint is in the wrong execution context. Confirm the code path executes and use a page-context debugger statement, for example inside page.evaluate().
A Node stack trace names generated JavaScript Browser DevTools mapping does not configure Node stack traces. Use a Node-side source-map approach such as the documented source-map-support handler or preload, after checking compatibility.
An awaited Puppeteer protocol call appears stuck This may be a protocol issue, not a source-map issue. Inspect browser.debugInfo.pendingProtocolErrors for pending protocol errors and stack traces.
Page logs are missing from the terminal Page console output is not automatically forwarded to Node. Register a page.on('console', ...) listener before the page action.

For deeper protocol diagnostics, Puppeteer documents the environment setting NODE_DEBUG="puppeteer:*". Enable it only when necessary: protocol logs may contain sensitive data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Puppeteer need a source-map option?

No. Configure your compiler or bundler to emit a map; Chrome DevTools loads and applies it for browser-side debugging.

Can source maps show TypeScript files for a Puppeteer page?

Yes, if the page’s build emits a valid map and DevTools can retrieve it. Enable JavaScript source maps in DevTools and check Developer Resources if the authored file does not appear.

Why does a browser breakpoint work while a Node breakpoint does not, or vice versa?

They pause different processes: page code runs in the browser, while Puppeteer’s automation script runs in Node.js. Use DevTools for the former and the Node inspector for the latter.
